Force Album Sorting

I have a proble with iTunes since ALL MY LIFE. The point is that when i enter to see the albums of a certain artist they are ordered by track..... I like to have them orderd by Album by release date. So i go to the album column header and click a couple of times until i have the sorting by year activated.
Then everything is fine.. All my artist's albums are sorted by album date, until i close iTunes. When i reopen it, the albums are sorted ONCE AGAIN BY TRACK...
I just want the my albums are sorted by year ALWAYS, and i dont want iTunes to THINK or tell me how to sort my music
Thanks a lot

iTunes is supposed to remember your sort & view prefences from session to session. I can't track down a link right now but if memory serves these preferences are going to be in itunesprefs.xml or, if not, something very much like it. Perpahs this file contains some form of corruption that prevents iTunes reading the preferences from it. Try renaming this file to see if that lets iTunes rebuild it and remember your preferences.

  • How do I print a list albums sorted by artist

    iTunes 12.1.2.27  Windows 7 SP 1 (64 bit)
I would like to generate a list of albums in my library sorted by artist.  This used to work fine before I upgraded to iTunes 12 last fall by using File > Print > Album listing / Theme: List of albums.
Since the iTunes 12 upgrade the list is generated sorted by album title and not by artist.  I have my View options set to Albums - Sort by Artist them by Title.
Even though the theme clearly states sorted by artist, it generated a list sorted by album title.  How do I fix this so that it generates what the theme description states?
Thanks for your help and insight in restoring the old print behavior.

    Hi ed,
I am on iTunes 12.1.2.27 ... but what I get is albums sorted by title in both the preview and the output file.  This behavior has been consistent since I upgraded to iTunes 12 ... with iTunes 11 it did work like what you are seeing.  I do think it is some sort of bug ... iTunes 12 was not the smoothest software upgrade I have see.  I did run into a lot of lock-ups and trashing of album art in the 12,0 releases but this latest release (12.1.2.27) seems to be have taken care of most of those issues.
I might look into doing a complete removal of iTunes and then try a new clean reinstall but I was hoping that maybe there was some setting, or config file parameter, that might fix this..
    Thanks for your response.

  • OS5.1 forced album artwork screen saver on me.  How do I get rid of it?

I just loaded the newest OS for the Apple TV.  I use my own photos for my screen saver.  But the new OS has forced album artwork into my photo rotation.  All I see is album artwork.  I dont want that.  Anyone know how to get rid of it?  There is no on/off with that option in the screen saver menu.

    Tophipherous,
I was confused too because i did not see the "My Computers" option that the jmfindley referenced. Here is how I was able to solve this problem on my Apple TV (5.1.1)
On the main screen go to "Photo Stream"
    Select "Settings"
If any photo streams are currenty signed on (linked to the Apple TV) select "Sign Out"
Then, sign back on using the apple ID associated with Photo Stream you want to see displayed through your Apple TV. It should start building the library slowly on the screen, the number of photos will increment upwards a few at a time.
Finally, double check that your screensaver settings are correct (this happened automatically for me). On the home screen go into "Settings". Under "Screen Saver" check that the Photos option is now set to "My Photo Stream"
    Hope this helps.

  • [iOS][Your Music] Album sort by artist is out of order

After the 3.4.0.684 update for IOS, the album sort by artist is out of order. It looks like the sort is only factoring in the first letter in the sort as seen below. Can the old sort methodology be put back in.

  • Album sort order missing

I want to use 'Recently Added' in album view while hiding all rated albums.
I do not understand why the new 'album' sort order is restricted to only a few fields, while the 'songs' sort order doesn't have the two-level; sorting that the album sort order has. Both of these views have half the functionality I want.

Figured it out. I added "Various Artists" in the Album Artist field for every track and it then sorted them all together.

  • "iPod" album sorting

Has anyone figured out how to sort albums chronologically by "Artist" in an iPod. I tried sorting albums in iTunes which works great, but as soon as you put the artist in your iPod it defaults that artist's albums back to alphabetical. I know that the software in the iPod is not iTunes, but it seems that if the artist sort tag carries over then the album sort tag should as well.

I put the year in brackets at the beginning of the album title and number the songs on all my music - Goes back to when I had a Zen that wouldn't even play the album in order. This keeps everything in chronological order, but kind of screws me when it comes to using things like fetch album art or lyrics.
If chronological is more important to you (like it is to me), you might try this. Besides, I'm also picky about added the correctly sized artwork.

  • [solved] ncmpcpp - album sort?

Have recently set up a headless server for my multimedia needs. Since I control it via ssh I had to install a console music player and have decided on mpd/ncmpcpp. One thing that bugs me is that the Media Library sorts with Artist as the first criteria. Even in the 2-column view where Album takes precedence, it is still Album (sorted by artist), which is kind of silly since I can get that already in the 3 column view. And so it is difficult to access my albums which are compilations of many artists. Is there any way I can have "Album" and see all the songs in that album in the next column?
Or failing which are there any other console players I can use?

Thats what the albumartist tag is for. And ncmpcpp supports this one just fine. just add tag "albumartist = Soundtrack" (for example) on those albums.
to make ncmpcpp sort media library using this tag, hit ` and then A for albumartist.
**edit** also make sure, to add the albumartist tag to the supported ones in mpd.conf

If all my albums are neatly stacked under songs how can I copy that form to "Albums"...... hope you ge my drift?
I dont have the time to check out every album and song to have all same info so that they all "collect" together?

  • Album sorting problem?

I have an iPod nano, believe it's first generation, that I got in June 2006. It's always worked fine, but recently I've been having a problem with album sorting. I prefer not to sort my songs into albums at all, but a few do have albums listed. But now when I look up music by artist, rather than displaying "all" and have the album(s) listed below, it automatically goes to the album.
For example, I had one Taylor Swift song with an album listed, and all her other songs without. When I go to her name, it automatically goes to that one song, and I can't see the others without albums. THe other songs can still be found under "songs" on my ipod. When I delete the album, it's fixed, but I really don't want to do that. Anyone know how to fix this?

Once you add a second album name for that artist even for a single song, ALL the rest of the songs should now show up under that artist, even those without album names.

  • Cover flow and album sort issues

I just got a 80GB iPod classic for Christmas and I have noticed some annoying differences between iTunes cover flow and iPod cover flow:
    1. In iTunes cover flow, when you have songs with "Unknown Album", they clutter up the cover flow for each artist. In iPod cover flow, they are sent to the back of the cover flow in a nice little "Various Artists" cover. I like how this works on the iPod better.
    2. iTunes cover flow sorts by album artist, so you don't see a separate album for each non-album artist song.
For example: If I set my album artist for the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack to "Saturday Night Fever" (don't ask why, this is how i like it sorted) then I will only see one "Saturday Night Fever" rather than one for Bee Gees, one for Kool & the Gang, etc.
iPod cover flow sorts by artist, so you see a separate album for each non-album artist song. I like the way this works in iTunes better.
    3. When sorting by "Album by Year" in iTunes, syncing the iPod doesn't seem to follow the same sorting. Albums are still sorted on the iPod alphabetically. I want them to sort by year on my iPod.
So I would appreciate it if someone could help me with all 3 of these issues. As you can see, sometimes iTunes is better for me, sometimes iPod is better for me.

    3. Playlists should be sorted in the same way as they are in iTunes. The Cover Flow order is fixed.
This is not the case, at least not with iTunes 7.5.0.20 and my 80GB Classic running 1.0.3 on it (current version as of this writing). In iTunes, under LIBRARY, I select Music, and I have my music sorted via *Album by Year*. This works perfectly in iTunes. I'll use my Soundgarden library as an example, as it shows the problem nicely.
    *_iTunes order_:*
    Ultramega OK
    Louder Than Love
    Screaming Life/Fopp
    Badmotorfinger
    Superunknown
    Songs From The Superunknown
    Down on the Upside
    A-Sides
That's ordered by date and is perfect. +Ultramega OK+ was released way back in 1988, while A-Sides was released nearly 10 years later in 1997. In Cover Flow View it works great. However, in the iPod it's sorted alphabetically, which is completely wrong:
    *_iPod Classic_:*
    A-Sides
    Badmotorfinger
    Down on the Upside
    Louder Than Love
    Screaming Life/Fopp
    Songs From The Superunknown
    Superunknown
    Ultramega OK
This is totally wrong. And I haven't yet found a way to force it.
Apple, please, this shouldn't be that difficult.

  • Moving Multiple Albums & Album Sort Order Questions

Hopefully this is a really easy question to answer, but I just can't figure out how to do this.
    1. Can you move multiple albums around in Aperture? I just imported my iPhoto libraries and I'd like to groups a set of the albums that I have into one project. The problem is that I can only move one album at a time.
    2. Can you specify the sort order or manual set the order that albums appear in projects or folders? It seems that Aperture automatically sorts them alphabetically.
    Thanks!

    1. Can you move multiple albums around in Aperture?
unfortuantely, as far as i am aware you can only move one at a time
    2. Can you specify the sort order or manual set the

you are correct, automatically alphabetically only ... i haven't been abble to change this at all ... the only way to force something else is by adding a ~ or other character that is ahead of 0 ...

  • ITunes album sorting issue

    Hi everyone. ( :
I'm currently having a minor yet aggravating issue with iTunes, where—upon album import—it separates albums, or even singles. It's a bit hard to explain, so I've included an image capture of the problem:
    http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/6150/itunesissue.png
I've checked the ID3 tags and pretty much everything, and iTunes still doesn't join the albums, and the fact that I can't figure out why iTunes does this is what's so annoying.
It only happens when I click the arrow to show the artwork in the list view, but it doesn't happen to all my albums and singles, though, just the few, and so far, the only temporary workaround that seems to do the job is going through the ID3's (empty) sorting fields and typing a single space in each box, like so:
    http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/254/itunesissue2.png
It'd be nice to be able to import my music without having to do all that, of course. And since I've never had this problem in any of the previous versions of iTunes, I wonder if my particular problem is a bug or something?
Is anyone else having this problem as well? I've been lurking through the iTunes forum and haven't seen another report of this issue. I'm kind of at a loss as to what I should do about this.

I have had one or two cases of album names appearing identical in every regard except a very slight difference in appearance of one of the characters which suggested it might be derived from a different font or something similar. In that case pasting the information from one file to the other overcame the issue.
The other thing to check is if the artists are all absolutely identical too. Again, it is easy to accidentally introduce a space, or to use one kind of dash instead of another which may be almost indistinguishable to you but forces itunes to think the album is an album with the same name but by a different artist so it isn't really one album but two.

  • Album sort order PSE11 - is it by design ?

When experimenting with the sort order of albums in PSE11, I was surprised to see that in some albums, changing the sort order from 'oldest' to 'newest' did not produce any effect.
The reason of this probably lies in the menu /preferences/general :
If you have only pictures taken the same day, the above setting will still show 'oldest first' even you choose 'newest first' for album order.
I believe that the most used order is 'album order' and that the 'newest first' is very rare.
I can understand the option to browse 'oldest first within each day' when in 'newest first' in thumbnail view.
However, I wonder if that option makes sense to sort an album ?
    Was it by design ?
    If it were me...
I would not use that preference for an album,
    and...
I would add the option to sort by filename and caption.

Figured it out. I added "Various Artists" in the Album Artist field for every track and it then sorted them all together.

  • Is it possible to bypass the Album sorting sequence...

Need to list alphabetically all selections of a given artist without grouping by album...
I.e., 5 albums by a given artist with a combined alpha listing of all selections within the 5...not affected by album name...

Hmmm not sure how you could create a smart playlist that included all artists and then put their songs alphabetically within the artist grouping. You can either alphabetize by artist or by song name, but not really both.
To include all the artists (or anything in a playlist you want to include all of) you can do that by making a negative rule that is true for all of them. For example, if you want all the artists, then simply create a rule like "All Artists that are not AAAAAAAA" which will be all of them (except of course if you actually have an artist called AAAAAAAA").
But I think you can build a playlist of what you want in a normal (not-smart) play list and build it up manually. Create your final playlist first, which starts empty. Now click on the Name column in your library to sort the library by song names. Open the browser and use the search box and type in the first artist you want to put in the playlist. Say U2. Select U2 when the Artist browser list narrows down and you see it. Now all the songs shown below are just U2 songs in song order. Select All and drag and drop those into your playlist. Repeat for the next artist, select all, drag and drop into the playlist.
I don't have iTunes in front of me at the moment, but I think that should load the playlist up the way you want, all songs grouped by artist and the song within the artist subsection in alphabetical order.
