Force editing document locally by link

Hello Community,
Hopefully it is the right forum for this problem.
I'm working with the Enterprise Portal and need a solution for the following problem.
I have some documents, stored in folder. One is like a central document with hints and links to the other documents. When I'm opening a document via link in this document, the target document opens and I have the possibility to change it.
Is it possible to have this functionality in a collaboration room, with check in and check out of the document I want to edit when clicking on a link in this "central" document? In other words, is it possible to force local editing via hyperlink?
Thanks for every hint or solution!

Thanks for this hint, this works. It is a nice workaround. But now I have the problem, that a new Browser opens and I have to log in again. But this is maybe another "not Enterprise Portal"-problem. Another one is a maximum length of 255 chars for a hyperlink in MSExcel and this is just a MSOffice problem.
Maybe I have to find another solution for the whole problem.

Frank

    Nithya

    Hello Nithya,
We have had the same problems .We have a lock down desktop concept which means that the some .dll files(for activex to work) required for editing are not always registered/allowed to run.
You could refer to note 755581
I have the same problem wherein employees are not allowed to change the settings there are two solutions to it.Iam speaking to my network guys to get this sorted we have tested this on a remote client and it works after registering two .dll files.
1)Use applet version.(But needs JRE installed on all client machines).
2)Speak to your network administrator and get this two .dll files registered.
or you can check with browser settings and make those changes. You can use some scripts which registers when they login.
I would like to add that when i use domain adminstrator user account i get a pop up to install the activex.
I am thank full to the sdn community who helped me to narrow down on this front.
Should you need any details please feel free to post back.

    Hi Mayank,
check ActiveX is there in local pc or not?
    Configuring Local Editing
In the KM standard configuration, ActiveX is used for local editing, but you can
use a Java applet instead by modifying the configuration for local editing. There
are two parameters that can be configured, which can be found by choosing System
Administration u2192 System Configuration u2192 Knowledge Management u2192 Content
Management u2192 Utilities u2192 Editing u2192 Local Editing.
The Active Component parameter specifies the component used for local editing,
that is, a Java applet or ActiveX. The Java applet requires the installation of a Java
plug-in and Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.4 on the client PC. This component
can be used for Internet Explorer and Mozilla. The ActiveX component requires
    Internet Explorer.
Note: There is no need for additional installation, but certain settings need
to be made to the users’ browsers. The necessary settings are listed in
the SAP NetWeaver ’04 Online Documentation under SAP NetWeaver u2192
Information Integration u2192 Knowledge Managementu2192 Content Management
Configuration u2192 Utilities u2192 Online & Local Editing.
If the Java applet option is used, the Java Runtime Version parameter needs to be
configured to specify the version; if HTTPS is required, version 1.4 is recommended.

  • Editing documents ( URL / web linked documents )

    Hi,
I'm trying to edit documents (uploaded files and urls) through the portal using the EDK.
For uploaded files I have created a Portlet that uploads the replacement file and replaces the exisitng one in the filesystem on the server where portal is running before continuing to the properties screens where the user can update the document properties. This is working fine and documents are replaced.
I want to provide a similar replace mechanism for URLs (webLinkedDocuments) and was wondering if there is a way for me to get actual url out of Plumtree for displaying in a form and is there a way of replacing it... without having to access/update this information directly in database tables?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    All the best,
    Richard

Yes, I realize that, but previously all my Camino Internet location files opened in Camino, Firefox's in Firefox, etc.
Like I say, it's not a big deal, but it does seem a little Microsoft-esque in the way it monopolizes the URL documents from OTHER browsers. They even have the other browser's icons, yet Safari claims them now.

Before when I clicked on a hyperlink in a Pages document Pages immediately opened the link.  Now Pages ask if I want to "Edit or Open" the link.  Is this an option that I can turn or off or is this just a change with the latest update?  This only started in the last six months or so.

Use Pages '09 which should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.

  • Error when trying to open, edit & save the document from email link

    Hi,
The error occurs when user tries to open the document from the email link (after the document is "shared" with them.
The recipient has been given edit rights.  When the document is opened it is opened in read only.  The recipient will click "Edit Document" and then they receive an error
"The file or folder name http://servername/sites/documents/Shared Documents/IT/Test/TESTfile.xlsx?NoRedirect=true' contains characters that are not permitted. Enter a different name."
    Any suggestions please.
    Thanks.

    Hi Inderjeet,
Thank you very much for you reply.
I tried with the LAN options, it didn't help.
    I see that in the
http://blog.ray1.net/2007/12/file-or-folder-name-contains-characters.html it's written as the error occurs while "Creating a new site based on a custom site definition, you get the above error", which is not my case.
Mine happens when I click on the link from the email body. An exact thread I found :
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/systemcenter/en-US/d724a882-66cf-4515-a088-afd7d088b103/email-link-to-share-documents?forum=sharepointgeneral&prof=required
But no solution is mentioned there as well.
I think this is an issue with SharePoint 2013. Do you agree? I would like to invite more experts for their opinion on this please.

  • Edit Locale Settings Link

I was wondering if anyone knows what API calls I must make to get the 'Edit Locale Settings' Link for a given user which exists on the 'My Account' page.
    Thanks,
    Mike
P.S. This is for version 5.x

I can tell you right now, building your own activity space to cut the steps and do what you want is about the only way to go.
What I would like to know is:
    1) Did I miss a simple way of bypassing the MyAccount page to go straight to the Edit Locale Settings page?
    - you could just hack the page, create a hyperlink and copy the edit local setting page url... that would work.
    - however, you can never get it to redirect back to the current page the user was on, b/c that's now what this edit local setting page does.
    2) Is the activity space the simplest and best way of accomplishing what I need?
    - yes, b/c the locale setting needs to take place and a refresh of content needs to take place. Basically, you still need to mimick what the edit locale page did to get this to change instantaneously for the user as well as do the rest of the actions you described.
    3) If not, would it be possible to create a custom tag to replace the PT:MyAccount tag so that the custom tag goes straight to the locale page?
    - you could do it this way. But why not do #1 instead?
The short of it... going to the editor page is the simliest and easiest way about it. But the editor page points back to the my account page. If you want to change this behavior, you will have to hack it somehow... which is not possible really unless you build your own activity space.

    Hi Nazih,
First I would like you to ask you two things:
    1. Make use of the search here on SDN to find a solution to your problem. A similar question was actually asked yesterday!
    2. Please be more generous to the ones that answer your question. Looking through your old threads I barely see the use of any stars.
Now to you question. As mentioned before I just summarized yesterday a list of notes that should help find a solution to problems with local editing, and now I just added this list to the Wiki for others to make additions:
    https://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/KMC/HowtotroubleshootproblemswithLocalEditing
Hope it will be helpful for you,

  • Unable to edit document using "Edit with Word" option

    Hi All,
i am having an issue with Office web apps. i am using SharePoint 2013 and Office web apps 2013. all the configurations have been done successfully. but i have a different kind of issue.
i am able to open documents in browser
i am able to edit document using " edit with word/excel web" option
but i am unable to edit document using "edit with word/excel" option
i have Office 2010 installed on my local machine.
do we need to have MS office of 2013 version? or is there anything missing from configuration part.
    Please help me.
    Thank You,
    Bhaskar.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you could not use the "edit with word/excel" option.
I had tested the issue with the Office 2010, the option worked well.
You don’t need to install the Office 2013 to use this option.
What did you mean “but i am unable to edit document using "edit with word/excel" option
Did you mean the option gray out? Did the issue occur in other browsers?
You can use compatibility mode to check whether it works.
    Open IE->Tools->Compatibility View Settings
You can also add the site into Trusted sites.
Open the IE->Internet Options->Security->Sites->add the site into the Websites, then check whether it works.
What's more, you can also use other browsers to check whether it works, such as Firefox, Chrome.
    Thanks & Regards,

  • Unable to edit documents in InDesign CS4

    Hello,
A work colleague has recently changed their laptop and installed CS4 - since the getting new computer he has been unable to edit documents (which are fine on my machine). He can select objects and reposition on the screen, but can't edit/delete. He can place the cursor and type new text, but can't edit existing text and is unable to move the cursor with the cursor keys.
The objects are not on the master page or locked.
Our Corporate IT has recently revoked all admin access to our own machines - could this affect InDesign? (No-one else seems to be effected)
We have tried uninstalling/reinstalling and deleting the prefs, but to to avail.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    Hi Peter,
    Thanks for the reply.
My colleague had CS4 installed on his previous machine and had been using it without problem for over a year - its only since receiving his new laptop that the issues have started.
Unfortunately, I don't think setting up a new user account is really an option (it requires assistance from our parent company's IT dept.).
Yes, we did follow the instructions in the link when replacing the prefs files.

    Hi,
unable to edit documents in SP2013.while editing getting the following error. Please guide me on this.
    Thanks In advance

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that only
one user could not edit documents in SP2013 with OWA.
You can use compatibility mode to check whether it works.
    Open IE->Tools->Compatibility View Settings
You can also add the site into Trusted sites.
    Open the
IE->Internet Options->Security->Sites->add the site into the Websites, then check whether it works.
What's more, you can also use other browsers to check whether it works, such as Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer 10.
Check whether the user has permission to the documents.

  • Acrobat X Pro Ctrl E option for Edit Document Text tool

    Hi,
When I use the "Edit Document Text" tool (formerly TouchUp Text) in Adobe X Pro and press Ctrl E, it's saying "Properties No current selection".
However, pressing Ctrl E on other tools such as Comments, Link etc, the Properties toolbar is showing properly.  And when I switch back into using the  "Edit Document Text" tool, the Properties toolbar will show as grayed out.
I tried using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro and it's doing the same thing.
Is the Ctrl E Properties toolbar is not really available for "Edit Document Text" tool?  Do I really have to right click on the area and choose Properties?

    Hi gracet41265898,
Please refer the page associated with this Link (Unable to access Acrobat's Tool properties toolbar (greyed out, or "no current selection") ).
Please let me know if this resolves your issue or in case your problem persists.
