Force finder to render thumbnails for layered tiff files

Since updating to to Mavericks I've noticed that the Finder no longer renders thumbnails for large layered TIFF files(1 to 2 Gb). This was never the case with prevoius versions of OS X. Is there some way to force Finder to render them again?

exactly the same problem here, solutions?

  • Transfer of layered Tiff Files

Hi guys, just try to find my way in working with Aperture and using Photoshop as external editor.
I was exporting versions of a master from Aperture and opening them in Photoshop (Not using the External Editor w/in Aperture which will be my next and probably more convenient option), applying some adjustment layers on it, saving the file than as tiff, and re-importing it into Aperture.
I noticed with some of my PS edited files that they appear in the viewer less sharp than I saw them before after the sharpening in PS, often completely unsharp, even less sharp than the unsharpened original version. When I go to Full-View they appear to be mostly correct. Is there any explanation for that?
Has it something to do that I was NOT using the External Editor command? Because, after re-opening those files in PS I realized that all layers are merged. Why are my layered Tiff files not preserved when transferring them in the said way?
One more question. Can anybody tell me whether there is ANY advantage or disadvantage in using Tiff files instead of PSD files, since both formats seems to me having similar file sizes?
Thanks a lot for any guidance

Yes, using the External Editor is far easier!
Yes, there is an explanation! When you're not zoomed in with Aperture, the quality of what you see depends on the preview quality setting in your preferences. Increasing the quality number in your preferences will cause the image to stay more true to the RAW data, but performance probably won't be as good (things might be more likely to get choppy when you're making adjustments).
From what I've heard, only Adobe software is compatible with multi-layer TIFFs and all the other software will flatten those files. You wouldn't have a problem if you used PSDs instead of TIFFs.
Since non-Adobe software flattens multi-layer TIFF files, using PSDs will prevent unintended flattening by non-Adobe software and help us keep track of which file was used for print and which file contains layers.
    Hope this helps!

  • Aperture saving layered TIFF files incorrectly from CS5

    Hello All--
I've had a problem for some time now.
The short and no so sweet:
I open a RAW file as a TIFF file in CS5 directly from Aperture. I work on the file in CS5, incorporating layer masks, etc. and then save the final version back to aperture as a layered TIFF file. This is where the problem occurs. Aperture corrupts the file upon saving. When I try and view the file in Aperture, it only displays a portion of the image (or one of the masks) and that's it.
Right now, it seems to happen at random. Super frustrating as I never really know when it will or won't occur. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I found an old post here that seemed to note the same issue on a much older version of Aperture (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3343863). I'm currently running the latest version of Aperture.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

First of all, Aperture does not save files. It may not properly display the file that CS5 saved, but it didn't save it.
When you say you've exported the files and they appear corrupt, do you mean export version or export master. The later will export exactly what CS5 saved.
If you have extra channels- other than R, G, B and the RGB composite channel- in Photoshop including saved selections (but not including layer masks which only appear in the Channels Panel when the layer is active) it will not display properly in Aperture.
This goes back to version 1.0. If you need to save a channel, save it as a disabled layer mask. You can easily test to see if this is the problem: Open two images in Photoshop and save a channel in one of them but not the other. See how Aperture handles them.

  • How do I change the thumbnail for a video file?

Can I change the thumbnail for a video file (ex. .mov) in Bridge CS4?

Can I change the thumbnail for a video file (ex. .mov) in Bridge CS4?
Not to my knowledge. It seems it takes a snapshot from about the 10th second of the movie and creates a thumbnail for it. On a Mac the finder thumbnail shows the first frame of a movie, both don't seem to be able in getting customized.
It will be down to a good naming convention I'm afraid. Not having CS4 installed anymore but on Bridge CS6 .mov files play on an reasonable sized scale in good quality in the preview window, maybe that will help you?

  • Edits to a JPG Smart Object  in a layered TIFF file:  DOES NOT Save to the originally placed file?

When placing a JPG as a Smart Object (and even multiples) into a layered TIFF file:  If I open each layered Smart Object JPG, make changes as a JPG and SAVE the file, I expect the ORIGINAL SOURCE JPG file that was placed to also be saved- I thought that is the file I was editing!
This SUCKS!  To capture my edits to the original individual files:  I now have to open each layed TIF file, Edit each smart object JPG and SAVE AS to overwrite the original and capture my changes?  Is this the way its always been- I don't think it has.  How can I edit a Smart Object file in a layered document and ALSO update the SOURCE file?

You should edit the original jpg, and then replace the smart object. There is a utility that makes this easier, if you do many of these. Looks liek this

    Hi
Is there a way to make Windows Explorer create thumbnails for QuickTime MOV files? I'm really desperate to get a solution. Any help will be appreciated.

    Hi,
You should have known this would be caused by some registry entries were modified incorrectly by some software, especially third party codec pack.
I would suggest you import the a good known copy from a good display windows 7 computer, just import such this content:

  • Changing File path for different TIFF files in a For loop

    Hi dear users:
I am using "IMAQ write TIFF File.vi" that basically writes a TIFF file to a specified file path. However, I would like to CHANGE the file path for each TIFF file i save in a for loop. The reason for this is that the File path has to include the file name and I do not want to write over the same file name all the time in a for loop. What I would like to have are sequential TIFF images. So if the file name would be "Image", I would like the result to be Image0, Image1, Image2 and so forth when I run my For loop. Can anyone help me with this?
    Thanks

  • HELP - no luck opening large layered Tiff files

I have a large, layered Tiff file which I am trying to open in Photoshop CS5 but every time I attempt to open it I get an error "unexpected end of file" it is HUGE, over 400MB I also can't flatten it as I need to be able to access the layers - any ideas?

It sounds like the file may be damaged. If you have another copy from closer to its origin, try that instead.
It is also possible the drive on which it is stored needs a pass of Disk Utility "Repair Disk"

  • Bridge to PS CC 2014:  Error "Windows Cannot Find Photoshop CC" for PSD & TIFF files

Since installing PS CC 2014, I have been unable to open PSD & TIFF files from within Bridge.  If I do- I get the error above.   Once Photoshop CC 2014 was installed, I removed the older version of PS CC.
Sounds like a registry issue created when PS CC 2014 installed alongside PS CC; confusing Bridge of where to send Photoshop files.

Looks like bridge is still trying to run the old version.  Did you uninstall Photoshop CC after installing Photoshop CC 2014?
Have you made sure and fully closed Bridge and reopened it?  Logging off and back on would ensure that.
Failing the above, people have reported success with using the Creative Cloud Cleaner tool followed by a reinstall of Photoshop CC 2014...

  • Warning Window on opening Numbers for missing tiff files

Every time I open a file with Numbers I get the following six Document Warnings:
    Missing File thumbs/proto-thumbnail-Sums.tiff
    Missing File thumbs/proto-thumbnail-Checklist.tiff
    Missing File thumbs/proto-thumbnail-Sums Checklist.tiff
    Missing File thumbs/proto-thumbnail-Basic.tiff
    Missing File thumbs/proto-thumbnail-Headers.tiff
    Missing File thumbs/proto-thumbnail-Plain.tiff
What is the problem? How can it be solved?
    (this is annoying)

It's what is written in the User Guide but the app doesn't behave this way.
    Look at this screenshot :
I started from the template named « Dinner Party.nmbtemplate ».
You see the files embedded in the document's package.
And now you see the template contents :
As you may check, the fact that I checked the checkbox forced the app to copy the application's picture files.
Compare the contents of Napoléon.numbers saved with the box checked :
the thumbs are referenced as stored in the document itself.
and the contents of Bonaparte.numbers saved with the box unchecked.
the thumbs are referenced as stored in the application's Templates/Shared folder
From my point of view it's odd but maybe it's deliberate.
I'm not sure that Numbers '09 embed every picture/thumbs files used in Numbers '08 templates.
I'm not sure that Pages '09 embed every picture/thumbs files used in Pages '05, '06, '08 templates.
At least bug of feature, now you know why your document embedded the pictures/thumbs files.

  • Photoshop Elements Organizer 11 crashes due to deadlock in the thread wait chain when creating thumbnails for *.mts (AVCHD) files

    Hi,
the Elements Organizer 11 creates a deadlock in the wait chain when generating thumbnails for more than a handful of MTS (AVCHD) files.
After importing AVCHD files from my Canon video camera, the organizer using default settings always crashes. I was able to narrow down the problem to be caused by thumbnail generating.
After deactivating the automatic generation of thumbnails, the organizer does not crash any more upon launching .
Of course, working without thumbnails is not very practical. The next resort is manual trigger of thumbnail generation by selecting "update thumbnail".
If I manually trigger updating of thumbnails for files one by one, then it works for quite many files before crashing again.
Selecting thumbnail update for multiple files at once has a much higher likelihood to crash.
This does not seem to be related to particular file contents: a file that leads to crashing once may be flawlessly get a thumbnail created at the next attempt.
The Windows event report looks as follows (German language Windows):
Name der fehlerhaften Anwendung: PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe, Version: 11.0.0.0, Zeitstempel: 0x505e9f67
Name des fehlerhaften Moduls: msvcrt.dll, Version: 7.0.9600.16384, Zeitstempel: 0x52158ff5

    My questions:
    - has anyone experienced the same problem?
    - is this a known issue with Organizer 11?
    - is the issue solved with Organizer 12?
I have Premiere Elements 11, Photoshop Elements 11 installed and not experienced any other issues with these applications.
Playback of said AVCHD (*.mts) files works flawlessly, i.e. I do not have any codec or performance issue on my PC.
Deactivation of anti-virus software has no significant effect. I have excluded video directories from scanning anyways.
Have deactivated face recognition, visual search and smart tagging in the organizer.
Have also disabled hyperthreading in the BIOS.
Using Windows XP compatibility settings for PSE somewhat improved the stability, but did not completely eliminate crashes.
Additionally, it signnificantly slows down thumbnail generation and a progress indication window becomes visible during thumbnail generation, which is barely noticable in native Win 8.1 mode.
Officially, Elements 11 is compatible with Windows 8.1.
There is a knowledgebase article related to Elements 6, which recommends to disable multi-threading and to enforce execution of Organizer on more than one core.
This reduces the problem a little bit, but thumbnailing more than a handful of files still leads to crashing.
By means of the task manager, I analyzed the wait chain of the process PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe:
Every time the fault occurs, it is caused by a deadlock in the wait chain.
    For example:
    PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe (PID:6440) Thread: 6540
    -- PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe (PID:6440) Thread: 5932
    ---- PhotoshopElementsOrganizer.exe (PID:6440) Thread: 6540

  • Imovie is not generating thumbnails for MPG video files

    Hi everyone,
I have what I hope is a quick question with an easy solution.  I'm using iMovie '09 8.0.6 to make a movie for my parents of their granddaughter.  Imovie has generated thumbnails for all my video in iPhoto (most of which is .mov format), but two short clips (about a minute in length each) were apparently taken with a different camera and are in .mpg format.  For some reason, imovie is not generating thumbnails for these .mpg videos, though in the past I have never experienced a problem here.  What is wrong? What can I do to get these clips into iMovie or have iMovie generate these thumbnails?
    Thanks.

No, the orientation is not the issue, The first set of 4 imported videos were from a GoPro 3 camera, and the one that was lost doing an "update thumbnail" operation was also a GoPro3 fie.
Just now I did another experiment, I chose to update thumbnail from a video file created with my Pentax WG-3 and it worked.
I updated thumbnail on a horizontal and verticle video from my Galaxy S3, and now those are also gone with no thumbnail...
So far the only one that actually works for me is the Pentax video, which is a MOV file. , the GoPro 3 and Galaxy are mp4 files, so it's possible that the mp4 format has something to do with it. This is very frustrating losing my thumbnails like this.... Luckily I have not deleted ver11 yet.
I hope they repair this issue soon.
Thanks for the help so far,

  • No thumbnails for Nikon NEF files in finder

After upgrading to Tiger 10.4.2, Nikon NEF files imported through Image Capture no longer show a thumbnail image in the finder. The icon is a generic Preview document with RAW written on it.
I also have an issue when I go to change the default application used to open these files. In the info window I change the "open with" application and then select change all . . . at this point I get the confirmation window, click continue, the confirmation box closes and the file reverts back to the original Preview icon. Perhaps these two issues are related?
Anyone have an idea how to remedy these?

I have a Nikon D50 nef on my desktop. Double-clicking on it opens Photoshop, which launches Adobe Camera Raw. If you get that far and can make adjustments in the ACR panel, you are fine. That's what opens first.
Then you click "Open" in ACR and your nef opens in Photoshop and the document tab on top gives the .nef extension. You make your edits there, but if you close Photoshop, you won't save it as nef, it won't be in the Save file list. You save it as psd for example and close Photoshop.
You now have a nef with develop settings on your desktop and the psd you saved out of Photoshop.
All perfectly normal as J.J. said, Photoshop will edit the nef file, but it will be saved in a format other than nef.

  • Finder not displaying thumbnail for Nikon D810 NEF files

    Hi all,
I went out and bought the D810 upon it's release the other day and shot a wedding with it yesterday, however I've come to transfer the files over to my iMac this morning but finder isn't loading up a thumbnail of the shots.
I assume this is an issue with the new NEF file type for the D810 (I had a similar issue with Photoshop CS5.1, so now have to bite the bullet and upgrade to PS CC!), but is there an update to allow Finder to show the files?
I read somewhere that an update when the D800 was released was pushed through the latest version of iPhoto. I appear to have the latest version of iPhoto though, so wouldn't appear to be the same for the D810! (That said, I can view the photos in iPhoto but I prefer using Finder!)
Do you think Apple is likely to release an update for this issue any time soon?
Thanks in advance for any help

Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
The D810 was first supported in Lightroom 5.6 so, if you want to import D810 Raw files into Lightroom, you'll have to pay to upgrade to Lightroom 5, if your computer can run it.
Support for new cameras is never retrospectively added to older versions of Lightroom.
Your other (free) option is to download the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all D810 Raw files to DNG format then import the DNGs into Lightroom 4
