Force HD TV show to SD in Front Row

I previously purchased an HD TV show from iTunes for my older MacBook Pro HTPC. I get horrible choppiness when watching in HD, but not for SD in iTunes. In iTunes, I can set a preference for watching the show in HD or SD (right-click on the episode and choose the SD version).
How do I force Front Row to do the same?
TIA

I'm replying to my own thread, but the only way I can think of doing this (and I've been successful), is to physically move the HD files out of the TV Shows/title directory somewhere else. Then, Front Row can only play the SD files.
Seems to work...

  • IPhoto Slide Shows are Choppy in Front Row

Hi all, thanks in advance for any advice you may have.
I can view slideshows smoothly when played directly from iphoto (08). However, when I view the same slideshow from within Front Row, there is a slow down when transitioning from one image to the next. This means the show gets out of sync with the music. I use the slideshows for my business, so this is unacceptable.
I'm fairly certain that this started happening with I upgraded to from Leopard to Snow Leopard.
Any ideas on what I could try to fix this would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Andrew

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Have you also inquired over in the Front Row forum? Your situation hasn't been discussed before here as far as I can tell.
Try clearing out iPhoto's cache folder, User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto, and rebuild the library's database, backup and launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed to rebuild the library. Select the last three options.
See if that makes any difference.
If the slideshows are critical you might want to consider creating them as QT movies so the music stays in sync and playing the movies in Front Row.

  • Will watching shows already loaded on front row cost me money?

i just recently got a MacBook Pro, and while i was playing around i came across "Front Row" what I need to know is if the Itunes top movies and tv shows cost money to watch, their already there but before i get myself into debt over some show that i can watch online for free, i want to make sure

so all of the shows like the ABC Family shows that are there are free me to watch as i please?

  • How do I get music videos that I have to show up on the Front Row Screen

I have a bunch of music videos and tv show that I have obtianed that are .avi files that Itunes wont recognize. With out converting the formats in all of them, is there any way that I can get Itunes to recognize them or change the folder that "Music Videos" and "TV Shows" is linked to so that I can see these files from Front Row??

You might want to try installing 3ivx and Divx. They certainly seem to have sorted out my avi-related problems. VLC also plays back most video formats (why can't Apple make Quicktime as good?).
If you're still having difficulty, using a program such as iSquint to convert the files is always an option.
Once you have the right CODECs installed, if the files are in your iTunes library, you should be able to play them in Front Row. Although as I recall, only TV shows purchased through iTunes will show up in the "TV Shows" menu.

  • Front Row TV Shows in Movie folder!!??

Why are my TV shows showing up in my Movies folder when I use Front row, they are in the TV show Folder when i am in iTunes??
This started with the last itunes update, never had the problem before.
    Thanks, Mark

    *As fireflip suggested*,
+For 10.5.8 and iTunes 9 at least, select the show(s) and change the media kind to "Podcast" by getting info then going to "Options". Quit iTunes and restart then change media kind back to TV Show and restart again. They will now show up correctly in Front Row...+

I just did this and now i cannot change them back to TV shows, it will not process them. I can change them to Music and then back to Podcast but not back to TV shows or Movies.
Would approach this tip with caution
Everything fireflip suggested is correct Except that *+each file must be changed indivdually+*, no batch-editing here. I tried that and had to trash them all, then re-import them from my external HD. Also, I don't remember if I needed to close iTunes and reopen it before changing back to TV shows (I think all I had to do is close out the info dialog box, then reopen it to change back to TV). You may want to try it both ways.

  • Front Row showing inexistent movie files

I've had some movie file in the Movies folder that showed up in the Front Row list in Movies, under the line underneath Theatrical Trailers and Movies Folder.
I have deleted the files from the folder and secure emptied the trash but they're still on the list in Front Row.
How is that possible and how can I make them disappear from there ?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
No, Front Row should search in both locations. Music videos, movies and TV shows that appear in those categories in iTunes and are saved in your iTunes library should appear in Front Row under the "Videos" option. Also, any individual movie files (that can be played with the QuickTime Player application) that live inside your <Macintosh HD>/Users/<your user name>/Movies/ should also appear in Front Row, but they won't be categorized as "TV shows" or "Music Videos" like they are in iTunes.
Can you play your videos in your "Movies" folder with the QuickTime Player application by double-clicking on them? If not, then they won't appear to Front Row.

  • Does the new Front row features the same Podcasts blue markers on TV show?

Does the new Front row features the same Podcasts blue markers on TV show? As I'm using Tiger right now with Front-Row V1 that only show the blue markers on the Podcasts.
Not only that, but it also doesn't update the TV Shows counters when using front-row.
Another thing I wonder, its about Apple TV 2 (or whatever the name is) I'm using my Mini-MAC to watch iTunes Podcasts, TV Shows, Movies and DVD movies on my living room. Should I just get an Apple TV instead? Or with Leopard I can make it work just like Apple TV but with less restrictions? Right now I'm using an external 400 gig HD.
    Thanks for any advice.

    Bump.

  • Front row crashing

For some reason front row just started crashing, it only crashes when i choose 'movies' from the video section. I checked the crash log but it doesnt really give me something that points me to why FR is crashing.
    Any ideas?

I have this problem consistently. Front Row running in the background taking up ~%96 of the processor capacity. I can see this through the system monitor widget. However, Front Row does not show up under the Apple --> Force Quit menu. It's like a hidden process? (I didn't know mac's hid their processes). Sometimes I can get back into Front Row and use the "apple-Q" force quit command, and that will bring me back to desktop and everything works fine and the processor capacity is released. I can then even get back into Front Row and it will work just fine until the next unexpected front-row crash.
Unfortunately, sometimes when I am at the desktop and, having noticed that Front Row is crashing in the background, *I cannot get back into Front Row* either by apple remote or "Apple-Esc". And as I said, Front Row does not show up under Apple->ForceQuit. So I am forced to restart the computer.
Note: Front Row crashes at LEAST everyday, about every 3rd time I use it. I haven't confirmed this, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter what type of media has been played under Front Row to cause a crash. I'm kind'a hoping it's a bug that's secretly fixed in the next OS update

  • Front Row Crashing Computer

This has been an ongoing problem ever since the two Front Row updates ago, which, as you may guess, was a LONG time ago. The problem, as obscure as it may sound, is that whenever Front Row has to scroll the name of the song because it's too long to fit on screen, it freezes upon the flipping animation that happens every 30 seconds. Is there anyway to fix this?

  • How to Delete Item from Front Row?

Someone sent me a short imovie project and it was automatically downloaded to my "Download" folder. When I opened Front Row, the project name it's right under "Movies" along with "iTunes Top Movies", "Theatrical Trailers" and "Movie Folder".
I then moved the project file from "Download" to another folder created under my "Movie" folder. When I went to Front Row again, the original project was still under the list in Movies, now it's also in "Movies Folder". So basically it's showing up twice in Front Row in different places.
I see that once I play the movie from my Movies folder directly from the folder, it's automatically set to Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Movies. So it's showing up in Front Row via iTunes, and it's also showing in Front Row via my Movies Folder.
I just want to organize Front Row so that I don't have a long list of projects immediately under "Movies" in Front Row. I want these projects to neatly go in one personal movie folder only.
Is there a way to reorganize the items list in Front Row?
How do I delete the item that's originally placed under "Movies" in Front Row?

Assets are organized in various apps - primarily iTunes for most of us.

  • Photo albums in front row help

    Hi,
I am having trouble getting my photo albums to play via front row. I have numerous albums but when i go into them in front row, it just shows up random photos from the album and roll they came from, with none of the album pages showing. The photo roll and the name of the albums is the same ie: roll called sweden, album called sweden, would that be causing a problem, ie: iphoto unsure of which photos to show? They play fine in iphoto, with all of the album pages showing, but not in front row.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am getting a little frusterated!!
    Thanks,

    Heya Brendt,
Is the video within iTunes or just in your movies folder?
If it is not iTunes then ignore the "itunes" portion below.
Remove the following files to the trash (do not empty until you test for function):
    ~/library/caches
    ~/library/preferences/com.apple.itunes.plist
    ~/library/preferences/com.apple.frontrow.plist
    - Repair your permissions - > http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh17.html
    - Restart your computer again
    - Test and see how its working
    Hope that helps!

Can you launch the Editor separately then use:
    File >> Open
How did you install? From download or disk?
Have you activated the software? This has changed with PSE12 and requires you to sign-in with your Adobe ID (email address and password)

  • IPhoto Slideshow music settings/Front Row

I recently purchase a Mac Mini to use as a media center PC. I have imported photo's into iPhoto and configured slide shows with appropriate music ... in iPhoto all these settings work fine. When I access these photo's via Front Row
however, each of the slide shows plays with Minuet in G and my iPhoto music settings are ignored. any thoughts would be most welcome on how to have my iPhoto slide show music recognized with Front Row.
    Thanks,
    Paul

Well I may have found my answer ... If I run slideshows in Front Row from
Photos/Events I have the Minuet in G problem ... if I create albums in iPhoto and run the Event from within an album, the music selected in this album slideshow holds in Front Row ... at any rate it works for me!

Yes, Front Row handles DVDs fine. If Front Row is already open, a new section called DVDs appears after the Mac reads and mounts the disc. If you insert the DVD and let it be read and mounted first the new DVD section will be there when you open Front Row.

  • Mini, Front Row, and HDMI...

Picked up a new Mini to merge our server (iTunes, iPhoto, et al were being served off my laptop, which was fine only when I was at home) with our Apple TV. Mostly a positive thing... moving iTunes and iPhoto onto the Mini went smoothly, the Mini plugged right into the power cable and HDMI cable that were there for the Apple TV, so that went wonderfully. Outputting to a 42" Samsung LED-backlit LCD in our family room.
Our only big downside right now: if we leave Front Row running, and turn off the TV, when we turn it back on later we're greeted with a solid blue screen that doesn't respond to the remote, the keyboard or mouse... we've had to reboot twice in the two days we've been set up like this. For now, we just have to remember to turn off Front Row... if we're on the normal Finder, it doesn't seem to have this problem.
Is this a known HDMI/Mini/Front Row issue, where it gets into a bad state if the TV is turned off, or something particular to my set up? I was kinda hoping this would be our entertainment system moving forward, it's certainly happier in other ways (gives our family a nice central place to plug in iPods, iPhones, iPads, expands easily, etc, etc)...
    Thanks in advance!!!
PS: Our other minor gripe, for those who care, is just Front Row feeling like a step back from the Apple TV interface (which used to look like Front Row when we first got it, but got better)... I'd switch us to Plex, but it doesn't play our TV shows and movies off iTunes, so I'm hoping Apple will update Front Row someday to be something happier.

So far so good on the Mini... the down side (other than the hanging blue evil screen) is just how clunky Front Row is. The Apple TV interface wasn't perfect, but it was much cleaner than the Front Row interface.
We were watching Netflix streaming through Plex last night... Plex is awesome, I'd absolutely use it full-time and forget Front Row except we own a lot of movies and TV shows we've purchased through iTunes, and Plex can't play DRM'ed video. Because of that, right now we're using Plex for things like Netflix, Daily Show, Hulu, etc, and Front Row for our purchased media.
We copied our libraries over onto the Mini, consolidating them along the way.
With our previous setup, we had movies and TV shows on an external drive that was connected to my laptop, streaming to the Apple TV... which worked fine except when I needed to take my laptop somewhere, then the family was stuck watching whatever was actually living on the Apple TV.
Music, a lot of it was on my iTunes, but my wife and daughters had stuff on their iTunes on their machines... and with a plethora of iPhones, iPods, and iPads in the house now, we found we weren't using our laptops as media devices as much.
We started talking about collecting all our material (music, TV, movies, photos, etc) and putting it all on one device... then the Mini came out, and it looked perfect to just replace the Apple TV and be our central hub for everything!
So far, it's great... full 1080p, fast little box, moving the material over was painless, everything's syncing there now... just want a Front Row replacement that'll play iTunes video, and want to be able to leave that thing up all the time and expect it to be there when I turn the TV on.
