Force MBP to connect to 5gHz on new Extreme?

Just picked up a new Airport Extreme, and set up a seperate network name for the 5GHz band.  However, my iOS devices and MBP keep defaulting to the regular 2.4GHZ whenever they wake from sleep or reconnect to my Extreme.  Is there anyway to force them to only use the 5GHz band?

You have to set up another separate connection on all devices that tell the device to connect to the 5 Ghz band.
The easiest way to do this is delete the current connection on each wireless devices and then set up a new connection to the 5 GHz network.
Remember that 5 GHz signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so they will not pass through walls or other obstructions nearly as well as 2.4 GHz signals.
For that reason, 5 GHz is pretty much a "line-of-sight" deal, or close to it if you want good performance with 5 GHz.
If the signal must pass through several walls to reach the wireless device, the 2.4 GHz signal will be stronger and likely faster than the 5 GHz connection, so you might want to give some thought about this before changing things around.

  • Why do both of my MBP's connect different to my AirPort Extreme?

I have two mid 2010 MacBook Pros. A 13" and a 15" (both support a/b/g/n), both connecting to my AirPort Extreme (latest model). I do not have the 5GHz network enabled on it. The 13" connects to it on channel 149 using a/n while the 15" connects to it using channel 6 using b/g/n. The 13" transmit is much greater than the 15" MBP. Here are my questions:
    1) Why is the 15" connecting using b/g/n instead of the a/n like the 13"?
    2) How is the 13" connecting to my Extreme on channel 149? Isn't that a 5GHz channel? If it's not enabled then how is this possible?
    3) Is there any way to force my 15" to use the a/n instead of b/g/n?

Problem resolved. Please disregard. Thank you.

  • Setting up New Extreme

MacPro 2008, latest OS, latest Airport Util (6.3); when I replaced my old unit (Extreme Ver 5.0) with new (A1521), the new Airport Extreme would not connect to the Network, nor did iy see my Airport Express that I am using to extend the network. I have multiple networks--including a 5Hz and a Gust Network. I was trying to create a Network settings file which I could use to recreate the old networks on my new Extreme. When I open Network settings and select a particular Network and then access the scroll ladder (next to the +/- box at bottom of list)--the Export Configurations line is grayed out. Is there any better way to save your old saettings to use when you get a new Extreme?anyway to simplfy the new connections. Additionally, the new Extreme would not connect to the Internet yet modem ok and green lights on the back of the Extreme showing connections active; nor would it see the Airport Express extender I set up. Thanks in advance for asny suggestions

ufbrad24, Welcome to the discussion area!
FiOS does not require a modem. The Actiontec device is a router only.
You could replace the Actiontec completely with the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). Many have discovered that this can be done by a quick call to Verizon.

  • Force MBP to 5GHz?

Is there any way to force a MBP (early 2009/Expresscard) to use only the 11n 5GHz mode. My AP is a TC running 7.4.2 (MBP is 10.5.6).
Would like to partition wireless access so that the MBP uses the fastest radio and legacy devices (printer, XBOX, PS3) use the G radio.
I've set "802.11n only (5 GHz) - 802.11b/g/n" under the "Radio Mode" option in the Airport Utility but the MBP still always connects to the b/g/n (2.4 GHz) radio. And worse, if I use "802.11n only (5 GHz) - 802.11b/g", the MBP always connects to only b/g. Why ?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the discussions, leeferna!
Your MBP is looking for the best wireless signal available. Depending on where you have the MBP located in relation to your AirPort Extreme, it may well be receiving a better signal at 2.4 GHz than 5 GHz.
The reason for this is the higher frequencies on the 5 GHz band are absorbed by walls and any obstructions much more quickly than 2.4 GHz signals.
If you want to force your computer to connect to the 5 GHz band anyway, here is what I would suggest.
Make sure that you have separate names for your 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz networks
Click the Airport icon at the top of your screen and log onto the 5 GHz network
Open System Preferences, click on Network and click the Airport connection on the left to highlight it.
Click Advanced at the lower right of the window
Look at your list of connections and drag the 5 GHz network to the top of the list
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Remember any networks this computer has joined"

  • Force 5ghz when extending extreme with express

Is there a way to force a 5ghz connection between the new AirPort Extreme and new airport express. When it connects at 5ghz I Get twice the performance with a solid connection. The power went out and now it only connects between the two at 2.4ghz. Please help

If you give a different name to each band, you can try forcing the connection.. but the other problem is apple will mess up what happens at the other end.
    Let me explain.
I am running two apple routers.. older models but that doesn't matter.
I name the wireless in the wired router Time Capsule.. TC24ghz and TC5ghz.
I can then select which band I will extend in the upstairs Airport Extreme.
The strange side effect of this, is that upstairs will also create a second band with name TC5ghz but working on 2.4ghz.

  • Never connect to 5GHz network

Hi, I bought a dual-band TM last year (just out of warranty by a week) which I recently moved to a more central part of the house and close to where cable comes in. Since doing so, 2.4GHz coverage of the house has improved but nothing now connects to the 5GHz network. Before, the iMac was in the same room as theTM so I never noticed this issue but now, using the MBP and AirRadar, signal strength for the 5GHz network is clearly below the 2.4 network all the time. I am aware of 5GHz signal drop-off but literally, in order to connect to the 5GHz network the MBP has to be about 8 feet from the TM. Even then signal strength is only in the50s compared to the 2.4 network which is in the 80's from that distance. I've tried manually setting channels, turning on and off interference robustness, turning on and off wide-channnels to no avail. I turned on the 5GHz name option and forced the MBP to connect to it and the speed was dreadful. The whole point of me getting the dual band was so all my n-devices could be on their own, superfast network. Clearly that is not happening. Any suggestions on what I can do to fix that? Thanks!

"Signal Strength (sometimes known as RSSI), displayed in AirRadar as a percentage, is how strong the connection to the wireless network is. "
Although signal strength (RSSI) is routinely displayed in units of dBm (in which a larger negative number represents a weaker signal), it apparently isn't strictly tied to that unit of measure:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSSI
I installed AirRadar and I see that it's showing the strength as a percentage. In that case I have to wonder what a value of 100% would mean.
I also find it odd that AirRadar only shows a value for noise in the "Details" tab of "Graph". I think it would be useful to show the noise level in the other panels.
If it is in fact better to have a lower signal strength, why then is the 5GHz virtually MIA when more than 10 feet from the TC?
My earlier comments were based on the expectation that the values you were seeing were given in dBm, in which a lower absolute value indicates a stronger signal.
I can't explain why you're seeing tha 5 GHz behavior, unless it's related to that other thread.

  • Touch screen stopped working. Is there anyway to force a full backup of the iPhone without typing in my passcode lock or is there anyway to force it to connect to a WiFi network so the phone can backup to iCloud??

Hello all, I could use some help with my iPhone 4, I hope this is the best place to ask!
    The Problem:
I want to do a full backup of my iphone to either itunes or to icloud. Unfortunately the iphone got wet and isn’t working properly. The phone turns on and still works, but the touch screen no longer works. I have a passcode lock on the phone so iTunes will not allow me to backup it up until I type in the passcode (which I cannot physically do). WiFi had been turned off before it got wet so it won’t connect to any known WiFi networks either to backup automatically to iCloud.
    What happened:
I had been travelling for 6 months and went tubing on a river with my iphone in a dry bag. Unfortunately the dry bag failed and filled with water ruining my iphone.
    What I’d like to do:
It’s an old phone and I was planning on buying a new iPhone anyway. I would love to do a full backup to either iCloud or to my computer so when I get a new iPhone I don’t lose anything. I’ve already connected it to my PC and downloaded all the photos and videos off the phone so at least I haven’t lost that, but I would like to be able to recover all the text messages, WhatsApp messages and notes I had created during my 6 months of travel.
The last time it was backed up to my pc or to icloud was in April, so there are 6 months worth of very meaningful data I would love to keep to remind me of my travels!
Is there anyway to force a full backup of the iPhone without typing in my passcode lock or is there anyway to force it to connect to a WiFi network so the phone can backup to iCloud??
iTunes recognizes the phone just now and I tried upgrading the phone to iOS7 in the hopes that it would first backup and then upgrade. Unfortunately all that happened is the phone upgraded to iOS7, but it didn’t backup to iTunes. Now the phone is stuck at the iOS7 welcome screen and I can’t do anything else with it.
Any ideas or tips would be welcome!
NOTE: This is NOT a jailbroken iPhone.

If there is no other way around this, is there anyway to completely wipe the phone then??
The Apple store agreed to give me a new iPhone 4 as a warranty replacement for $150 (I travel a lot and I have a factory unlocked phone, so this is still worth it for me).  But before I trade it in, I would like to make sure all my data is backed up on the device first.
When I try and restore the phone now on iTunes, it says I have to turn off Find My iPhone on the phone first before I can restore it.  Now since I can't use the screen I can't really do that.
So how do I completely wipe the iPhone???
    Thanks!

My mailprogram in OS 10.6.7 frequently gives on old content/mail connected to an actual / new sender.

This sounds like an indexing problem.  Force a reindexing by deleting the Envelope Index. With IMAP or Exchange account, forcing reindexing requires removing the account folder. See:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/4.0/en/14019.html
Ask any questions needed to get comfortable with doing this.  Do you have any third party plugins or Mail enhancement apps that might be moving stuff around?  This would not be good for the index.  Rebuild on an IMAP account, where local copies of messages are kept may not be as clean as it would for POP and On My Mac mailboxes.

  • Force RDP to connect in full screen mode

    Hello there,
I have about 60 servers that I manage remotely using RDP from the office and from home.
At the office I have a 19" screen with max resolution of 1280X1024 and at home I have 20" wide screen with max resolution of 1650X1050.
When I work from the office, I have no issues. When I work from home, I first VPN into my machine at the office and then RDP to the different servers. After working from home and going back to the office, RDP opens in a 640X480 resolution and that produces
horizontal and vertical scoll bars and I need to adjust it multiple times until it holds for all servers. If I work from home this happens again.
is there a registry setting that I can force RDP to always start in full screen regardless of resolution used? I've been googling it for a little while and came up with nothing.
I am using Windows Vista Business 32bit with RDP v6.0 at the office and Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit with the original RDP client at home, if that makes any difference.
    Thank you,

I have exactly the same problem. If RDP detects that the monitor you are currently connecting with is a smaller size than that you last connected with it scraps the Full Screen setting and goes with the small screen size and puts it in a window which is
completely useless because the windows key does not work as it does in full screen mode and also who wants to use scroll bars with an RDP connection to let you click on the start button??? really not user-friendly and i have to close then connection
start a new RDP connection and check the screen settings every single time which is really not productive.
What I would like to see is that if you select Full screen it will always be full screen and will NOT remove the full screen option to give windowed mode.
Also it would be great if I can force full screen as default for all new RDP connections.
I feel for you arie01 having 60 servers. It is not that bad for me because I only have about 10 to deal with!

  • 2504 GUI not showing clients connecting at 5Ghz

    Hi all
Recently upgraded our infrastructure to v8.0.100.0, on the 'new' landing page, the GUI is showing no clients connecting on 5Ghz, only on 2.4Ghz.
If I check from the CLI, there are clients connected on 5Ghz.
    Is anybody else seeing this?
Is it just a 'bug' (does anyone know)?
    Please see attached.

  • Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro connecting to 5ghz dual band wifi?

I just found something strange. Under Windows, my lenovo yoga 2 pro does not see my 5ghz wifi connection (from my dual band router). But I just booted under Linux Mint, and was able to connect to the 5ghz connection without issues. Any idea why this would be?

Dual Band: 2.4GHz and 5GHz at the same time:
Your MBP can connect to both.
If the Bands each have a different Name, you can choose by hand, if not it connects to the strongest signal.
Click the wireless icon and you see the name of the network you are connected to, If you see the other band name you can choose that.
Click the wireless icon in the menubar while hoding the Alt(option) key: it gives the specififcs of the band you are connected to.

  • How can I delete my old Laptop from my iPhone (iTunes Wifi Sync) and connect it to my new Laptop

    HI;
I have an iPhone 4S Factory Unlocked, up to date (iOS 6.0.1). I connect it to my Laptop named "The Love" via USB and opend iTunes and checked Sync over Wifi to enable this feature. Everything works great.
After a couple months I sold my Laptop and bought a new Laptop named "Raid", I did the smae steeps, connect it to my new Laptop via USB and opend iTunes and I checked Syn over Wifi to enable this feature and hit Apply, also I did the sync via USB cable and it works fine.
Now I want to sync via wifi, so I went to General --> iTunes Wi-Fi Sync --> here my iPhone still showing "Sync will resume when "The Love-PC" is available", Okay I sold it!! What I will do! I stock! does this mean I will need to find my old Laptop and buy it back????!!!!
I tried to do those steeps over and over, same result, my iPhone stock with the my old Laptop, It seems my iPhone liked my "The Love" Laptop
    My question is:
How do I delete this setting? and connect it to my new Laptop?
    All the best;

Well " even if I plugged it via usb" I meant that I did all the spteps, connect my iPhone via USB, Open iTunes, Check on Sync this device via WiFi, click on Sync, Unplug the iPhone.
Again I DO NOT HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THE USB OR SYNC MY IPHONE THROUGH ITUNES VIA USB
I HAVE AN ISSUE TO SYNC MY IPHONE VIA WIFI (WIRELESSLY), THAT IS MEAN SYNC MY IPHONE WITH ITUNES WITHOUT USING USB CABLE.

Is there a way to get Firefox to 'Force all Links to be opened in New Tabs, like Maxthon browser does ? I really like this Maxthon feature but hate Maxthon as it has always has and continues to lock up all the time (what a pain!!)
Hoping Firefox can do this. By the way I know if you right click a link and ask for it to open in a new tab it will. I want it to be automatic.
    Thank you

    Question already asked and answered.
I gave an AppleScript and an other helper described a scheme relying upon standard features.
