Force network browser to default to AFP rather than SMB?

Hi,
I'm having an intermittent problem with the network browser. When I open it, I see a list of all the computers on my network (Mac and PC). But sometimes when I connect to other macs on the network, the protocol defaults to SMB.
What I want to happen is this:
- When I connect to a PC, I want to use Samba
- When I connect to another Mac, I want to use AFP
The network browser just shows a list of aliases to all the computers on the network and presumably picks the appropriate protocol itself when you try to connect to one of them. The trouble is, sometimes I'll be trying to connect to another Mac and it will ask me to authenticate for SMB. At first I thought the problem was confined only to my mac, but some of the others on the network are experiencing the same thing.
So really, I want the Network browser to connect using AFP by default and if a particular computer doesn't use AFP, then use Samba instead. Right now, I am connecting manually using command K in Finder and typing in the IP address - which is a bit of a pain.
Any help you guys could offer would be very much appreciated
All the best
Iain

Except occasionally when the status of computers on the network change and the browser hasn't updated, you usually can expect a reliable pattern for how to connect to other computers.
The Network browser in a Finder window will group computers according to Windows workgroups, Appletalk zones and AFP Bonjour. If all AppleTalk advertisements are in the default zone, they get grouped with Bonjour AFP advertisements in the "My Network" category. Selecting a computer in "My Network" should always result in an AFP-over-TCP/IP connection (from Tiger).
Alternately, to force the issue, you can use the "Go to server..." command (CMD-K) and enter the address of the computer. If you prefix the address with "smb://" it will use SMB, if you prefix it with "afp://" it will use AFP. With no prefix, it will use AFP (it will not fail-over to SMB or any other protocol).
This is all explained in Finder help and in various documents on Apple's support site.

  • When I am prompted to choose a folder to save downloaded files to, why does 7.0 start the download browser in a random folder rather than the last folder saved to?

When prompted to choose a destination folder for files that I am saving, I have found that 7.0 doesn't always open the file browser with the last folder I saved to. In previous versions, if I saved a jpg to a specific folder, it would open still directing me to that same folder the next time I was prompted. Now, if I am saving a string of images, there is no telling which folder the browser will be opened to when I am prompted. Very annoying to 1) have to figure out where I am in my filing system and 2) have to work my way through god knows how many folders to get back to where I saved the previous file ten seconds earlier. If this is some kind of smart feature that's making suggestions based on file source history or downloading patterns or whatever, can I turn it off? Here's hoping that you can help, because I really want this to be an easy fix rather than a bad version of your otherwise flawless program or worse yet a deteriorating hard drive.

Firefox 11+ versions have support via <b>browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite</b> pref to disable to disable the feature to remember the download directory based upon the URL.<br />
The browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite pref doesn't exist by default (it is hidden).<br />
Create a new <b>Boolean</b> pref with the name <b>browser.download.lastDir.savePerSite</b> and set the value to false.

  • Force 802.11ac Connection To Time Capsule Rather Than Airport Express

I have a new Time Capsule and a new retina Macbook Pro, both with 802.11ac.
The Time Capsule is in my main room and my rMBP is in my offce.  In between my office is the kitchen which has an Airport Express.  The reason I have the Airport Express in the kitchen is because some devices such as iPads and iPhones have a hard time connecting to the Time Capsule, so the Airport Express extends the network.
The rMBP has no such problems.  However, because the AE is closer, it stays connected to the AE rather than the TC.  This of course means I don't get any 802.11ac advantages.
How can I force the rMBP to connect to the TC and ignore the AE?

LaPastenague had good advice for you. All that you need to do is use AirPort Utility to enable the option to assign a different name to the 5 GHz band on the Time Capsule.
Then, move your MBP close to the Time Capsule and "point" your MBP to that network.  Then, check to insure that you have the MBP configured to connect to the 5 GHz network first in the connection priority list.
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Network
Click on WiFi on the left
Click Advanced at the lower right
Make sure that the 5 GHz network name is at the top of the connection order list. If it's not, drag it there
Make sure that there is a check mark in the box next to "Remember networks this computer has joined"
No other boxes should be checked
    Click OK
    Click Apply
    Close the windows
Note.....As you know, 5 GHz  signals are much weaker than 2.4 GHz signals, so 5 GHz works best when wireless devices are in the same room, close proximity, or have line of sight with each other.  If there are several walls or other obstructions in the signal path between the Time Capsule and MBP, the Mac may not connect at high speeds.

Is there anyway of creatiing a different name for this Folder rather than 2013?
If you are using one of Lightroom's "date-based" folder templates, then the folders are created in accordance with the image capture date, not the date that you happen to import it. If you specifically want to use the import date for your folder names then you probably don't want to use the Lightroom date template, and instead you'll need to setup your folder names manually.
The vast majority of users that use date-based folder naming schemes will use a standard Lightroom template, i.e. based on the much more meaningful image capture date.

  • Make startup manager load by default on startup (rather than option key)

I have a macbook pro 13' (late 2010 version) i am running Lion and i have windows 7 proffesional using boot camp.
When i boot up my mac it loads Lion by default.
I understand that to switch between the two i have to hold the option key on startup, i am then prompted for my password, and after entering it i get to the startup manager which displays the startup disks available.
I would like to know if there is a way of getting my mac to run the startup manager (with password) by default when i boot it, rather than choose one of the installed os.
    Thanks in advance.
    Gaz

No. However, you can install a third-party bootloader if you're willing to try it: rEFIt.
If  you do this then you need to know that Boot Camp Assistant will no longer be able to manage the Windows partition.

  • How can I force Excel hyperlinks to open Acrobat Pro rather than Acrobat Reader?

My Excel (2010) hyperlinks to PDF file always open the Reader...but I want these files to open in Acrobat Pro (X) so I can use all the tools.
    Is this possible?
Can I uninstall the reader? Will that force Pro to be the default file opener?
    Thanks.
    SS

Open Acrobat -> Click to 'Edit' menu -> Preferences -> General (Category)
Now click on "Select Default PDF Handler" button choose Acrobat X from the drop-down and then click apply.
It will reset Acrobat X as a default viewer and your all link will open in Acrobat then.

  • Preview.app - make "Move" the default cursor tool rather than "Text"?

Whenever I open up Preview.app, "Text" is the default cursor tool. How can I change this default to Move?

That's because you're opening text documents, so it thinks you want the text tool. Try a jpg.
While it won't default to move, it won't default to text either. Move is only a ⌘-1.

  • Csv files open rather than download

    Hello,
We've just set up a new Communigate Pro mail server. However, our Safari users are experiencing a bit of a quirk when it comes to accessing their attachments. When clicking on the download link for an attachment of content-type text/csv, the attachment opens as plain text in a new Safari window by default rather than it being downloaded. The user can option-click to force it to download, but I'd rather it download by default, as is the case with Firefox. Is there a preferences setting I can change to make this happen?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Hi Bill,
There's no setting you can set in Safari to make it download a particular file. I don't know anything about Communigate but can you modify it to specify a content-disposition header for the csv files? E.g.
    Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="mydatafile.csv"
The 'Content-Disposition' header will tell the browser to download the file rather than view it inline.

  • Are there settings in Acrobat to enable a PDF file to open in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader by Default rather than open in a Browser

Are there settings in Acrobat to enable a PDF file to open in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader by Default rather than open in a Browser

There is a check box in the preference (under edit). I have not had great success with this setting, but that is what it is supposed to do. Don't expect it to happen in Chrome that has it's own PDF viewer (or the preview function on a MAC). You might also check the settings for your particular browser.

  • Forcing Audition to copy media rather than reference

    Hi all,
How do you force Ausition to copy media locally rather than reference it by default. So that when I drag a sound effect from my networked library on to a multitrack session it copies it, rather than referencing the original. By doing this I am safe to make modifications to the sound file and when playing back files they are playing back locally rather than over the network.
I know i can do this to individual files, but it's a pain. Ideally I want this to the default behaviour.
    Thanks
    R

    Thanks!
Unfortuantely the iterative nature of working in sound design makes this unworkable as I'm constantly adding and tweaking new sounds; I never know when I'm finished adding/swapping out sounds so I'd be constantly having to exprot the session. I guess I'll have to stick with what I'm currently doing which is to 'convert to unique copy' (or whatever it's called) each file that isn't copied over. It's just a bit of a drag to always have to worry about this when a simple check box in the settings would fix this.
    Thanks again!

  • Forcing traffic through load balancer rather than zone to zone

I have several T5140s with 2 LDOMs. Within each LDOM I have multiple zones which contain 2 environments. Each environment comprises the following, an apache instance behind a BigIP load balancer, a JBoss instance, and several misc. The jboss zone has three IP address assigned for multiple applications. Each server is configured identically as far as zone and LDOM layout. We use mod_cluster to cluster our apache and Jboss environment. What I'm trying to accomplish is forcing the apache zone's traffic through the BigIP rather than zone to zone.
Referring to the information below, server2ldom1jboss is one jboss node which needs to connect to both server2ldom1japache and server1ldom1apache. server2ldom1jboss connects to server2ldom1apache via its DNS name which is a NAT address. So webserver2 resolves to 10.10.2.5 which NATs to 10.10.1.5 behind the BigIP. webserver2 responds directly to the jboss zone rather than through the BigIP. Not good. server1ldom1apache works correctly as it's not a local zone.
    Referring to this document, https://blogs.oracle.com/solarium/resource/solaris-container-guide-en-v3.1.pdf
    section 5.2.7.8
"Connection of zones via external routers using the shared IP instance"
    I've created the following routes
    route add 10.10.2.5 10.10.1.5
route add 10.10.0.34 10.10.1.5 -interface -reject
route add 10.10.0.35 10.10.1.5 -interface -reject
route add 10.10.0.87 10.10.1.5 -interface -reject
route add 10.10.1.5 10.10.0.87 -interface -reject
route add 10.10.1.5 10.10.0.34 -interface -reject
route add 10.10.1.5 10.10.0.35 -interface -reject
This does prevent the zone to zone traffic, but it also preventing any response. I've tried other options as well, but have not been successful yet. What concerns me is this "These interfaces must not be used elsewhere in the global zone." The 5140 has 4 ethernet ports, which are configured into two port channels. vnet0 and vnet1. The apache instances use vnet1. The remaining zones use vnet0, including the global zone (server2ldom1 10.10.0.21). I think this may be the issue, but do not see an easy resolution without breaking my port channels and losing redundancy and fail-over.
If there is anything I'm missing or a better/different way to do this, I would greatly appreciate any input on this matter.
    Thank you.
    webserver2 10.10.2.5 NATs to 10.10.1.5
    jboss apps 10.10.0.34, 10.10.0.35, 10.10.0.87
    10.10.0.0/24 is the lan
10.10.1.0/24 is the network behind the BigIP

After further research, I think the best course of action will be to create a VLAN for the zone behind the BigIP and then create the corresponding interface in the vlan and zone. Using this links as my references in case anyone is interested. I'll post what I come up with.

  • Windows 8.1 Group Policy to Force Domain Logon as Default?

I recently purchased a new Windows 8.1 computer for use in our organization.  The default logon option for the device is for a Microsoft Account (the default username field prompt is for an e-mail address, rather than for a username.)  However,
I would prefer that the default logon option be for a Windows domain account logon, so that users don't have to click the "Sign-in options" link and select "Local or domain account password" each time they need to log onto the computer.
I have learned that setting the "Interactive logon:  Do not display last user name"
policy (located under Computer Configuration / Policies / Windows Settings / Security Settings / Local Policies / Security Options) to
Disabled allows the domain logon option to be retained across sessions.  However, I would prefer to keep this option set to Enabled so that the previous user name is not displayed.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how the default logon option can be forced to a domain logon, while still suppressing the display of the last username?

    Hi Arowitv,
According to your description, we can use the following policy to check the result.
    Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options:
    Accounts: Block Microsoft accounts
Click this option, and select" Users can't add or log on with Microsoft account"
Note: Selecting this option might make it impossible for an existing administrator on this computer to log on and manage the system.
Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon :Assign default domain for logon
Set the option to Enabled, and add the Default Logon domain.
    Hope this helps.

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.
