Force quit - Application unexpectedly quit
When an application freezes and I hit Option/Command and esc, I get a box saying the program has unexpectedly quit and do I want to report or ignore. Why? It was not unexpected, I caused it to quit.
Is this just the way it works now?
Thanks
The short answer is yes. The rationale I guess is that you want the opportunity to respond when having to force quit in the first place.

Applications quitting unexpectedly and Force Quit doesn't work
Hi there -
Hoping someone can help me out because this is driving me crazy! For the last week or so, probably 75% of the time that I save my work on word, excel or numbers the application stops responding. Force Quit either doesn't work or takes an extraordinarily long time to work and I end up restarting the computer. A few times during these episodes, Finder also stops responding, in which case I can't even restart appropriately. I'm wondering if an upgrade to 10.6 would fix this issue or if I should be doing something else instead to avoid total hard drive failure! Thanks for any help you can offer.Ok, so day 2 of getting updated software (my office for mac was way out of date and so the mac genius proposed that i try that and see if it solved the issue) installed and then updated and i'm still having the same issues. Happened in Mail today for the first time - went to attach something and mail stopped responding, wouldn't force quit. Mac Genius also told me to try a different account on the computer to see if that account has problems, so I logged out of the account I normally use, and the computer wouldn't log out - just showed my desktop photo and no other options for the longest time. Eventually just shut down the machine, logged in as a different user and seems that everything works fine when I do this.
Thoughts on how to start fixing what seems to be communication (maybe indexing problems) on the account I normally use?
Thanks! -
For the past week, every time I try to open Safari I've been receiving the message saying that Safari has quit unexpectedly.
A dialog box comes up giving me the option to ignore, report or reopen.
When I try to reopen the same box just keeps coming up.
I've reported it and another box comes up with a '?' . I've checked this and it gives suggestions for how to rectify the issue. I've looked at all options but none answer my problem. One suggested that I force quit in the system preferences. However I can't get the safari icon to stay on the top bar long enough for me to click on it in order to force the quit.
I wonder if anyone else has been having this problem and can suggest a way to solve it.
Thank you very much,

Element's 6.0's Bridge doesn't open anymore - says application "unexpectedly quit"
Hello. I purchased my MacBook Pro in late September, and purchased and installed Elements 6.0 for Mac.
Elements and Bridge were both working fine until late October, when one evening its Bridge CS3 application suddenly froze, so I had to force-quit it, and now every time I try to open Bridge I instead get this message:
"The application Bridge CS3 has unexpectedly quit."
I posted this question in the Elements forum, where I was advised to launch the updater from PSE Help Menu -> Updates, which I did, getting the message that there were "no updates available."
I was also advised to reset my Adobe Bridge preference files (by pressing and holding in the Option key as I launched Bridge), which I did but that didn't work either. I still get the same error message whenever I try to open Bridge, which I have been unable to open since October.
I was further advised to ask in this forum, to see if anyone could help me trying to solve this problem.
I will appreciate some advice on this. Thanks.
Rob
Arlington, VAAs I'm not familiar with Bridge version for elements it might have the same
places were it stores cache and plist file.
First try to delete the Bridge list file (user/library/preference) and in
here find adobeBridge plist file and drag this to the trash. (it will renew
itself with a fresh new file after restarting Bridge).
Restart Bridge holding down option and try again.
If not then close ridge again and in same user library but now cache folder
find the cache folder for Bridge (can be a very large file when having used
much files). (user/library/caches/Adobe/BridgeCS3 and inhere place the
cachefile outside the library (or drag it to the trash)
With this action you will need to recache all your previous cached files but
together with plist file and refresh prefs you have an almost new install
for Bridge.
Bridge CS3 is not the best version for bridge to say the least, I often used
this method (once every 5 or 6 weeks) because it had very much issues which
I solved with those actions. CS4 is more stable and faster, but you need to
upgrade and that is not for free...
I was further advised to ask in this forum, to see if anyone could help me
trying to solve this problem.
I will appreciate some advice on this. Thanks. -
Good Morning All,
Is there documentation anywhere on force quitting applications and why it should be done as a last resort? I have a user who ALWAYSEssentially these are the side effects of force quit:
1. Documents aren't saved. Of course a File menu -> Save document will save the document's latest changes.
2. Open documents find themselves corrupted.
3. Open backup cache documents may get corrupted, making an application unexpectedly quit the next time it is opened, or the document next time it is opened unexpectedly quit.
If force quit is being done because the application can't close, it is probably due to #3 having been done at an inopportune time in the past.
Sometimes a force quit is impossible to stop because a 4 language screen comes up telling someone they must restart. This is known as a kernel panic. Find out from them if they have seen any kernel panics. Also find out if they ever spent more than half an hour unable to quit the application because the beachball cursor comes up and nothing functions.
Is the data on the machine backed up? We could discover why a spinning beachball may be happening, or kernel panics may be happening only if the data is backed up. -
Permissions errors, applications not force-quitting
hi All
hoping someone might shed some light on this problem for me...
for the past few weeks, at random, but usually with apple software, my system hangs. A force quit of the app (usually safari, mail, or itunes... but has been firefox a few times too?) apparently 'quits' the program, but it is still visible in my Command + TAB list, as well as having the small blue dot on its icon on the dock.
trying to relaunch the program gives me an "error -600"
I have run Yasu, MacJanitor, and DiscUtility to clean preferences and reset permissions (not all at once, at separate times!) however, it continues to be a pain.
This machine USED to run for weeks without issue, now it requires a Hard Reset at least once a day...
I have just run Disc Utility in Safe Mode, and attached the junk it spat out. it had errors, but no idea what they mean, or how to fix them...
any help is always appreciated! thanks!!

Permissions repair completeOK. First, never waste your time verifying permissions or the hard drive. Just repair them. Verify does not repair anything.
Second, your hard drive appears OK. The permissions messages are innocuous as they occur for everyone who installed a Front Row update and/or Java update. Simply put OS X replaced certain folder locations then replaced the original location with alias links to the new location. DU hasn't been fixed to reflect the change so it produces an error message related to these new links. Just ignore it.
Third, most likely your problem is unrelated to disk or permissions repairs. What you should try is removing cache files. I can make two suggestions here:
1. Download and install AppleJack - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate. Read the documentation carefully then follow the instructions.
2. Download a utility such as Leopard Cache Cleaner and use it to remove system, user, and font caches. An immediate restart is then required during which the caches are rebuilt.
3. Locate and delete the respective preference files for any applications that continue to quit unexpectedly.
4. See the following for additional assistance:

I am having problems with the Preview application. When I try to use it to open a pdf document it gets hung-up and I have to select force quit to close it. Any ideas on how to resolve this problem? Thanks for any help
Can you open the Preview program without loading a file, like by itself?
If it doesn't load then I suspect a corrupt Preview preference file.
Deleting the System Preference or other .plist file
Can you open other files with Preview, like jpg's and images?
How about other PDFs? or is it just that one you have downloaded?

My hard drive has 70.93 GB available, yet when i have more than one internet tab open, i have to force quit google chrome because 'there is no more available application memory'. How can I solve this? I have a 2009 macbook pro running on 10.6.8. I have tried updating to mavericks through the mac app store but after it downloading for a day i got an error message saying there was a problem with the download. The same thing happens if i try to update itunes or the mac app store. After research, i have also tried repairing disk permissions, but every time they do get repaired the 'repair' button still appears, i'm not sure if it's because it was unable to repair the initial problems or if it just keeps detecting new ones.
2 GBs is a minimum in which you can do many things, but not concurrently. Be very careful to not install third-party add-ons, limit the number of applications you choose to enter in Login Items, run as few applications concurrently as you demand.
I would consider adding more RAM to your computer. Your model supports 8 GBs, so I would install that. -
Disk Utility: Application Fails To Open / Must Force Quit
Hi-
My Disk Utility application opens but hangs on the "Gathering Disk Information" screen and I get the spinning wheel of doom. I let it spin for minutes/hours and it doesn't seem to matter. I have to Force Quit to get out of it.
I searced for a preference file to try trashing it and creating a new one but no luck in my search by name.
Any help would be great. Thanks! It sounds like it's hanging on the disk check.

Application Runs, Won't Quit Or Force Quit... Ideas?
Issue: My computer has been running slow and now I have been having issues with the applications. I will launch an application (such as Firefox or Mail) and it runs fine. I then try to quit the application and the window will close. The application does not completely quit. I can still see it active in the Dock and it appears when I try to Force Quit it. The application will not Force Quit and the wheel begins to spin. If I hold down the power button on the front, turn it off and fire it up again, the application can launch again. The same thing happens again and again.
I have been trying to figure this one out for a week now. I Repaired Permissions, ran Disk Warrior & Tech Tools, booted off the install disk and ran Disk Utilities. I am still having the problem. I haven't installed any new software or hardware. Disk Warrior and Tech Tools did not find any problems. I have two drives mirrored with Soft Raid. I also have an external drive that I use Time Machine to back up my files. I have disconnected all external drives while troubleshooting, but have not achieved success yet. I read through some posts here, but didn't find exactly what my situation was. Any ideas?Delete these guys:
/Library/Caches
/System/Library/Caches
no harm.
If you do a full backup with SD, why not restore it then to another location? test the water so to speak.
Yes, if you have a mirror you would have to redo. SoftRAID is easy to deal with, and you can have 2 or even 3 drive mirror (with stripped reads). I rebuild RAIDs frequently, anytime there is a major change to OS (10.4.4 was just such a change, too, along with 10.5.0, .2, not just major point numbers)
Restore with SuperDuper should be identical to how things were configured.
Always keep two backup sets.
Have a TEST system for sure.
SD runs as sudo administrator so every user's account should backup and restore properly. Double check your settings. This is not reinstall.
Practice trial run. Never do a "live test" if you don't want to face the music. -
My Bridge CC opens in a locked mode - I cannot make any changes (dump cache) - it says "other instances of Adobe Application Manager are running, which must be closed." I have to force quit Bridge to get out of it. I tried to uninstall Bridge and re-install it but it did the same thing. Any ideas where to go next?
The fact that I uninstalled Bridge and reloaded it has me concerned as to what to do next.?You need to force quit all other (real or fake) instances of the Application Manager. Instructions differ between Mac or Win.
A lot more information about your hardware and software is needed.

i currently use a iMac OS X 10.6.8 and I cannot open iPhoto. Every time I click on iPhoto the coloured wheel comes up and lets me go no further, leaving me with no other option but to force quit the application.
it is showing all my existing photos but will not let me click on any of them, nor will it allow me to import any new photos into iPhoto.
I am really worried that I cannot access all of my photos and even more worried as I need to back them up!!
HELP!!Try repair the Library:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

OS X freezes whenever I cannot force quit an application
About twice a week I have an application that will hang. Usually when I close my MacBook Pro while the app is running.
The app will not quit or force quit, if I try to restart the OS, it hangs and I have to hold the power button down to shut it off.
I think I am on my 20th powerdown this way and it drives me nuts.
This is my first Mac and it has been like this the entire time.
Support has no answer form me other than reinstall everything. (BTW they wont support me since I reported the problem too late, how was I supposed to know this was unusual, I was using XP before and this was normal)
I also have Boot Camp with Vista 64 installed and it is perfect. The only time I reboot Vista is to boot OS X, which is soon to be never if I cannot get this fixed.
The machine is awesome but only Vista works correctly. Why is OS X the sucky one on Apple hardware? There are 3rd-party wired keyboards which work well with Macs, and which can generate the standard suite of Mac shortcuts. This can be critical if you ever need to invoke certain commands at startup.
These are usually less expensive than the Apple-brand choices. Look for ones which state expilictly that they are Mac-compatible. Macally offers several models which are compatible with all Mac keyboard commands, including the startup set. -
Hi
Using Compressor 4 / Apple QuarterMaster admin etc, I have set up a Cluster and it works well to Share > Export Using Compressor Settings. That took some doing, and I'm happy that it works.
If I do all my processing in the foreground, or alternatively in the background on my FCPX computer, ie without running or using any cluster in the background, it all goes well. Quick, error free.
If I activate the cluster and only put my local machine's compressor services into it, and then send my compressor batch to the cluster, it works perfectly well. But that defeats the point of having a cluster. I want the remote machine to do all the work so my local machine doesn't slow down.
Unfortunately, if I add the remote machine's services into the cluster, the encoding always fails with 'Media Server application unexpectedly quit' in the error log. I know that the cluster is distributing segments of the file to the remote machine - this can be seen in the Share Monitor, but they never get processed and sit there waiting until I get the error message.
The remote machine is a modern 4G core 2 duo MacBook. It's never been used for this before. It has Compressor 4 and the Pro Apps Update installed and both appear to work. Both machines are running 10.6.8. The remote machine has Compressor services initialised in Apple QMaster sharing. The QMasterAdmin sees these services. They are accessible over Bonjour and appear in the Cluster. Compressor services from both the local and the remote machine are configured exactly the same way. The same QT codecs exist on both machines. I've restarted, shift-restarted, etc etc.
So I am at a loss here. The remote machine just won't compress anything it is sent.
Any ideas? Must both have FCPX installed?
Anyone actually got a remote machine in a cluster to work with Compressor 4? I can't figure it out.
Chris.OK... finally sorted it out.
It's a bug, as far as I can tell.
Any job entered directly into Compressor 4 in the normal Compressor manner will be successfully rendered by any working cluster from any machine that can access the cluster. That's good. It means that the underlying distributed processing model works well.
HOWEVER - any job forwarded to a Compressor 4 cluster that includes non-local compressor services (ie compressor services not resident on the same machine), using Share > Export Using Compressor Settings direct from FCPX will fail.
To confirm this bug, I made a cluster on a remote machine. It was a dual core machine, so I enabled 2 compressor services on that machine, and that's all the cluster was. Simple.
I then manually entered a video file (ProRess 422 720p) into Compressor on the remote machine. I did this by physically setting up new job using the compressor user interface. A bog standard ProRes422 720p file rendered fine this way on the remote machine. As did anything else I gave it. Good.
Then on my main machine, I opened Compressor and made a job based on the same file and settings, and sent it to the remote machine's cluster. No problem at all! Great!
So now I know that both Compressor versions, and the clustering model, are working fine. In fact I can send all sorts of files to the cluster, from any other version of compressor, and have them processed on the remote machine, and get the result back on my desktop later on. Excellent.
But, if I try put this same file into a FMPX timeline, and go Share > Export Using Compressor Settings.... and select a cluster with remote (non-local) compressor services, it does not work. Rendering the video segments on the remote machine times out and fails, every time. It doesn't matter what file format I use, it just fails.
So it's a bug.
From what I can tell, Final Cut Pro X somehow messes up the Share > Export Using Compressor settings where the cluster includes non-local compressor services, causing all jobs to fail. The same Share > Export Using Compressor Settings will work quite happily if all the services on the cluster are on the same machine as FCPX, or if the job is sent to This Computer in the background. But any attempt to send files to a cluster using any remote services will fail.
I hope this saves some people from wasting as much time as I have!
One workaround is to export to ProRes then put this file manually into Compressor, sending the job to the remote cluster. This is a two step process with a large intermediary ProRes file. If one goes Export as QuickTime movie, generating the intermediary file prevents further FCPX work being done.
To get the intermediary in the background one could use Share > Export Using Compressor Settings via either This Computer, or to a cluster using only local services. Then once complete, manually add it to a compressor job.
So this is a FCPX bug as far as I can tell.
Chris.
