Force quit mail
Mail won't quit. I must "force quit" mail and reopen in order to get new mail. Also must force quit mail to shut down.
Consider yoiu have corrupt preference file, corrupt mail index, possibly the disk directory.
Try safe boot.
Try repairing the drive from another partition. Lion Recovery or OS X DVD.

I have to force quit mail every time I want to shut down my macbook
I know there are several other posts asking the same question but I've been through all of them and I can't find which is the application that is blocking my mail from closing. Here is the diagnostics test I ran.

Have to force-quit Mail - Update did not fix
The update seemed to fix all of the issues I had with SL, except for the spinning wheels in Mail, and that Mail will not quit without a force-quit. It will even cancel a restart. Am I the only one left with this issue?
Problem
Here is what is happening. Btw I am using a Dutch version so my apologies if I translate menu-options wrong.
Mail is opened at startup. When I want to quit (CMD-Q) mail, nothing happens and the program gets in a sort of wait state. The system doesn't say that mail is not responding anymore. When I open the Mail-menu several options are greyed-out, including the CMD-Q as if the program is waiting for something. After waiting 15 minutes still the same and the only way to end mail is by using the force quit option.
If Mail is opened and I use the red X to close the window it isn't possible to open it anymore. Stopping the normal way isn't possible either and I am in the same situation as above and need to force-quit Mail.
If I leave Mail open and want to shutdown the computer I have to force quit Mail, because otherwise I cannot shutdown anymore.
*Solutions I've tried*
Using the Rebuild menu-option doesn't help.
I have downloaded the complete 10.6.2 dmg-file and re-installed it. This seemed to fix the problem, at least for a little while. But unfortunately after a day the same problem came back
How can this be possible?
Is there anyone out there who has the same problem and knows how to fix this? Would it help to re-install the mailprogram? How do I do this?
This is happening on the new computer of my father. I have convinced him to make the switch from Windows, but this situation is making me feel a bit embarrassed -
Have to Force quit Mail & cannot delete certain messages
I know some folks have already posted about this, but I've yet to find a solution. My mail continues to download the same, previously deleted messages each time I open it. I also have to force quit mail to leave it. It will download new mail from my .mac account while in this condition but will not access my other sympatico mail account. In order to get new mail I have to force quit and reopen the app. I've considered the 'rebuild mailbox' option but all of these annoying messages are in my inbox and there appears to be no 'rebuild' function for the inbox. I've also tried going into my library and manually moving these files to the trash and restarting mail. They appear again. Can someone please offer me a solution to this problem. All I can think of doing now is getting rid of Leopard to go back to Tiger mail.
ThanksHold the phone. This, apparently, may be a Bell Sympatico server issue after all. I've tried to get in contact with their support people and the message says that they've been having problems. Also, my wife, who only uses .mac mail recieved the same email (that keeps popping up in my inbox) and has had no issues. I retrieved my mail using my newer imac as well and the same problem occured there. Hence, it is probably not an app issue, but a server issue.
Thanks all for your help. Hopefully I can resolve this with Sympatico. -

"Enter Password" prompt won't go away without Force Quitting Mail
Hi, I've been having this problem for a few weeks now. I have Mail at work set to always ask me for my password for a POP account (the only account setup in Mail). The problem is that if I don't type in the password correctly the first time, then I'm stuck with the "Enter Password for Account..." dialog box. Entering the correct password and pressing 'OK' or clicking 'Cancel' or pressing the Esc key doesn't work. The dialog box just stays open. The only way for me to get rid of it is Force Quit Mail and make sure I type it correctly the first time.
We have a million different accounts at work and they're all set to expire the password very often (without letting me re-use old passwords) so the chances of me typing an incorrect password are always pretty high...
I'm on a new Intel iMac, 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, with Leopard up-to-date. I've tried deleting the account entirely and re-creating it, but the problem happened again.
Message was edited by: Bart S.Any thoughts? I've tried repairing permissions and also deleting my mail preferences file, but the problem still pops up.

Force quitting mail when nothing else works
Running OSX 10.9.3 and while downloading software updates mail opened. Update started and than stopped due to mail be open.
Cannot shut down. PLEASE how do I force QUIT mail?
Thanks!Choose Force Quit from the Apple menu, select that application, and press the Force Quit button. If that doesn't work, save and close everything you can and use the Activity Monitor in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to force quit the loginwindow process.

Wondering if anyone can help? mail 4.0 under snow leopard will only quit if I just open and close it, If I ck for mail, send an email or delete emails, etc, It will not quit, I have to force quit it, Ive tried to quit up top under mail, and also in the dock where when you click on mail it now shows a quit option, neither quits mail for me, I realize that this is minor compared to what some people are experiencing, bur any help -advice would be appreciated Thanks

I can tell you what worked for me. The Activity window in Mail(window menu) showed that Mail was trying to sync with something-"...Registering syncing preferences". I went to home/library/Application Support and moved the SyncServices folder to the trash. Restarted and everything seems to be working fine. Mail quits normally. -
Cannot force quit Mail application or turn off computer
My Mail application has been quite buggy the past few days -- today, it's been at it's worst, and will not allow me to close the application or force shut down on my computer. It very randomly decided to start saving one of my failed messages into my "Recovered Mail" folder multiple times, and now it shows next to my Inbox messages that they were last viewed on "January 1, 1970"
I've tried to force quit Mail and it simply won't close. I need to restart my computer, and even holding down power does nothing... it keeps telling me Mail needs to close first.
I've ran two virus scans and it says nothing is wrong but I'm baffled. Any help or ideas? Thank youHi eulojoy,
Some questions about your mail application:
1.) How many email accounts are you checking?
2.) Are they POP, IMAP and/or Exchange?
3.) How many messages do you have in each of those accounts? Hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands?
Did you recently run any OS X updates, such as the one from 10.6.3 to 10.6.4? Has anything changed on your system since the last time Mail worked properly? Do you run any 3rd party plugins for Mail? -
I want to disable my mac.com mail, I know how to delete it but I cannot get into mail to do this, whenever I click on mail, or mail in system preferences to open it I get the spinning wheel and have to force quit. I am running a Macbook 10.7.5
Thanks,
Edward. You can't merge Apple IDs. You also can't cancel (delete) and existing ID, you can only choose to stop using it.
If your old ID was compromised and you can no longer access it, you'll have to contact Apple for assistance. Go to https://expresslane.apple.com ; click 'See all products and services' at the bottom of the page. In the next page click 'More Products and Services, then 'Apple ID'. In the next page select 'Other Apple ID Topics' then then 'Apple ID account Security’. -
I have a Mac Air. I use the mail application al the time. THe red, yellow, and green buttons disappeard. i have to force-quit now to close mail.. How do i get the buttons back? thanks.
Mail window may be in the Full Screen mode.
Move the mouse pointer to the top right corner of the Mail window and hold it there.
Menu bar should drop down and click the blue double arrow icon.
Full Screen toggle shortcut: control + command + F -

Must force quit Mail application
I am most used to using Entourage as my mail application but have been trying to use Mail but it constantly freezes and then I must Force Quit to start over. Keep going back to Entourage but of course I need Mail, for example, if I want to mail contents of webpage in Safari. What's the deal with Mail. Are there known problems?
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Leave checked (enabled) only the port configuration needed to connect to Internet and Built-in Ethernet (in that order if not the same), uncheck (disable) the rest of network port configurations, and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
Do you have any Mail plug-ins? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
/Library/InputManagers/
/Library/Mail/Bundles/
~/Library/InputManagers/
~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
To make accurately reporting this information easier, you may open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you can just copy it here and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>. You can then copy the output of that command from Terminal and paste it in your reply to this post:
ls -1 /Library/InputManagers /Library/Mail/Bundles ~/Library/InputManagers ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there. -
I have massive problems with Mail.
I use mail at work and have 3 accounts running
1. Mac. mail account
2. Gmail mail account
3. Exchange Server
I have quite a few folders in my accounts where I have to archive my emails to.
Often very often or lets say annoyingly too often mail stops working.
- stops receiving emails
- emails I have put away in folders disapear in my inbox again
- if I try to quite Mail it won't I have to force it and then when I open it again all my emails I was working on open again even so I have sent them already. Also all the emails I have folded away are back in my inbox WHAT A WAIST OF TIME!!
I AM VERY UNHAPPY ABOUT MAILS PERFORMANCE AT THE MOMENT! IT SIMPLY DOESN'T WORK!
Does anyone have the same problems and more importantly does anyone has a solution to this problem other then switching to Outlook???
Thank you!
OliverI have the "stops receiving mail" problem with Exchange. Sometimes I can open up the Activty window in Mail and stop the stuck processes. Other times I have to close then reopen Mail. I usually do the latter. A fix would be nice.
I wonder if your other problems are related to this. The actual process of relocating your messages is maybe queued up behind one of the stuck processes. Just guessing. I have not had that problem. -
Must force quit mail - registering syncing suspected
On an iMac running 10.5.8, Mail has to be force quit repeatedly. When looking at the Activity viewer, the process that appears to be hanging is "registering syncing preferences," and "syncing."
Any idea what's going on here? I've deleted all mail data and rebuilt it and consistently have the same issue. I suspect it's related to MobileMe syncing, but am not sure. Any ideas?Having many issues with mail. Must click message viewer to actually see my emails. Then must force quit to get out of mail. I finally left entourage(super slow with exchange server) to find mail not to be any better.
