Force Quit / Restart problem

An odd little problem just occurred. I have a HP Scanjet 7400c scanner, and the latest HP scanning software. It’s not great, but it works; I’ve had no problems with it before (not on this particular G5, anyway). Today I noticed that the little black arrow in the Dock that indicates the app is open was sat next to the scanner software icon. I was working in Photoshop cs2, but I hadn’t opened the scanning software!
I saved and closed all other apps and tried quit the HP software. Nothing, so tried to force quit the app. Nothing. Couldn’t restart the Finder, couldn’t restart. In the end I was forced to shut down by holding down the power button, after which I repaired permissions in Disk Utility, ran Cocktail and did a swift session on Diskwarrior to make sure everything was OK. No problems found.
I’m not au fait with everything my G5 does, but I want to keep it healthy. Anybody got any idea what this was – and should I worry?

My HP 3970c starts up without my prompting either. Although it, if I click it in the Dock lets me quit it directly from the Dock. Check your Apple menu -> System Preferences -> accounts -> select the login account that you use, and click on Login items. You'll see whether or not it is set to automatically start up there.

  • Mac Mail won't open after waking computer up. Have to force quit & restart

    Hi there,
My mail won't open 85% of the time unless I force quit and restart my computer. Then, after my computer goes to sleep, I click on the stamp on my dock, and nothing happens. My computer says its still open. I've tried quitting mail and reopening from my Applications folder. I've deleted the icon on the dock and tried to access from Applications, but still, nothing happens, and I have to force quit my computer and restart over and over again to use the mail.
Any one have an idea for me? I have my gmail and another personal email set up as IMAP. Could there be a glitch in the way I set that up? Mail seems to come and go fine, when it's active.
Thanks in advance for your time and any help

Has anyone found a solution to this? I'm having the exact same problem and it really just started a couple days ago.

  • Can't force quit applications problem during Time Machine backups

I've run into a frustrating problem with Time Machine. I'm using an external 750gb USB hard drive as a backup disk with my Mac Mini; the connection is visa the Firewire 400 port.
When I'm doing anything that's CPU-intensive while a Time Machine is backing up, it is a 50-50 chance that one or more applications will crash. It is impossible to Force Quit them, which means that it is impossible to log out or shut down. The user is faced with a choice: Kill the whole system, and risk corrupting the system hard drive, or yank out the Time Machine disk's connector, and risk corrupting the Time Machine backup. Of course the latter is preferred, and that's what I've done. Thus far, I haven't seen any corruption on the Time Machine drive, fortunately, but in order to work with my system, I have had to disable Time Machine backups while I am working. (I reconnect the Time Machine drive overnight.)
I know from some Google searching that others are experiencing this problem. My question is, has anyone figured out why this is happening, or developed a workaround?
    Regards,
    Bryan

In the process of restoring my MacBookPro from an external TM drive as we speak. I can say with almost 100% certainty that force restarting (holding the power-button down until the book shuts off) will corrupt your start up disk to some extent.
My problem is that I was away from my network when TM tried to do an update. I'm not sure if TM was actually able to connect to my server but none the less I was on a verizon wireless card and so even a minor backup would have been slow.
I needed to shut the computer down and leave. I have had TM hang when trying to shut down and tried to tell it to stop the back-up (which it tries to do for hours on end and have had to force quit before... had to run disk first aid that time) So this time I figured Id leave the computer on (though unplugged) while I drove home.
I did not close the case until the screen went dark. Unfortunately, it had just gone to sleep (a half hour later) instead of shutting off but I did not know that at the time so I shut the case then.
When I plugged it in in the AM it was dark but not black... I could just see the screen and could see it was frozen. Force restart completely screwed my startup disk. Luckily I have a BU from the night before.
Maybe TM should also be linked to the location, and or connection you are using. So, if I am away from my LAN it will automatically turn off. I also wish I could set it to back up every x hours instead of every hour.
Good idea... just needs some work on the routines. (only an hour left on my restore now)

  • Apps Don't Force Quit + Restarts Hang on $6500 new Mac Pro...  Unhappy

My new 8-core Mac Pro arrived 2 weeks ago. Since then I have had to Force it to Shut Down over 19 times.
Applications will often freeze and after force quitting them, they hang around in the Dock, still active, until I eventually restart the machine. Then restarting hangs on the spacey leopard background.
This is very frustrating. Especially after sinking my savings into this machine.
I have noticed that it may have something to do with the 2 G drives I have plugged into the machine. Often when one of the drives is hooked up, I get the spinning beach ball while trying to access files off of it. And when I must restart due to a frozen app in the dock, if I turn off the drives before I hit restart, the restarts will not hang.
Any thoughts on this dilemma? They would be much appreciated...

Hard to say with this little information, but I'd assume something was wrong with the machine out of the box. The two options are: hardware problem and software problem.
As a start, I would be inclined to erase the hard drive completely by restarting from the Mac OS X install disk, choosing Utilities -> Disk Utility and using that to erase. (Of course, you'll want to make sure you have a backup of all your documents first.) Then reinstall the system from scratch. Don't copy any settings over from the backup of your old system, since settings files could be corrupt.
Once you've got a squeaky clean system, if the problems persist, it could still be a problem with a specific app, but that starts to get harder to diagnose.
You could also try running Apple Hardware Test to diagnose some hardware problems:

  • Force quite & restart - now lost mail, ICal,Iphoto, bookmarks

    Hi,
Hoping someone can help me - an amateur but keen to learn Mac user.
Did a force quite on mail and then shutdown Mac (may have also logged out - not exactly sure though).
Computer powered up and it is as if I am using it for the 1st time - Mail blank(asking for new account info), Ical data gone, Iphoto data gone , firefox bookmarks gone.
After much panic, did a bit of searching and found the following:
1/System log shows that at time of 'force quit/shutdown' >> Setting hostname to 'my-name-computer.local'
2/ Managed to find my files under :Home file/my name/public/library/mail or calanders etc....where as currently it is pulling or storing data from :Home File /my name/library/mail or calanders etc.....
I suspect I have changed some setting and the public file has something to do with it but not sure what or how to fix it so I can restore everything back to normal.
Any ideas would be really appreciated.
    Thanks
    AJ

The symptoms you describe to appear to pertain to the original user
account having a significant flaw or corruption; so the result bears
out the idea since you are prompted to enter information as though
you had never used those items before.
Since the issue appears to be a damaged Directory, where the user
account is still there but not being seen correctly due to shutdown or
other corruption errors, one of the tools that may help restore the Mac
could be the use of *Disk Warrior*; it can built a new directory or fix one.
The booted Disk Utility in your OS X install disc won't fix a Directory.
So, that is something worth checking into further: using Disk Warrior.
Outside of that, there are other causes or initial paths to a similar failure
of the directory; some are caused by attempts to 'archive & install' and
not save the user's existing folder info over into the new system. In that
case, the info would be in the 'previous system' but not the new one.
I'm not sure (now) how to 'Recover Your Mac OS X Home Folder' &
or restore it; I've read of some who did that in more than one way, to
include moving the user info bits into another account given Admin
access, then after, delete the defective account entirely. You should
not have to do that level; and it involves more than I dare mention...
because, although I did read about it, I have promptly forgotten!
I'm glad they've named this area "Discussions."
    You may have to read up on a few topic areas that probably overlap;
one of them covers the general topic of recovering a (lost?) home folder.
This first one covers several topics and before going into it as though it
were really the correct answer, presume it is not. You are asked to use
the "root" user in do some tasks, straight-on; but later in the article, is
a less invasive thing to check into (read more about, search for, etc) in
the last section: Recover a user’s account or files.
{The main problem may be, that the items you may want to save into a
    new replacement Admin user account, could be damaged or really lost.}
    • How to Recover Your Mac OS X Home Folder:
    http://www.pctipsbox.com/how-to-recover-your-mac-os-x-home-folder/
    • Mac OS X: How to recover a home folder (directory)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2258
In the immediate above article, the action to create a new/replacement
user account named the same as the failed one, and a general way to
reclaim the old similar-named user preferences and info, is outlined.
    • Recovering Lost Users - Mac OS X Tips
    http://www.macosxtips.co.uk/index_files/recovering-lost-users.html
This page tells of two main ways the user account appears missing
and some methodology of how to restore some sense of it again.
If you had a pre-problem clone of your entire computer's contents,
the easy answer would be to re-clone the incredible backup to the
Mac after wiping the computer's drive completely. Or try Disk Warrior.
Hopefully some of this makes sense.
Some days, nothing does to me.
    Good luck & happy computing!

    Hi,
Check the logs (using the Console application) for a "GPU Debug Info Start" message followed by a long memory dump. If you find it then you might have been the victim of a very buggy video driver. Lots of people are having this issue but Apple doesn't seem to care.

  • Safari keeps freezing and crashing on my macbook. Won't let me 'force quit', re-start or shut down. HELP!

Sometimes when I am surfing the internet each website gets slower and slower to load, and eventually the little loading rainbow icon just keeps going round and round and it has frozen and crashed. What concerns me also is the fact that when this happens it won't even let me 'force quit Safari'. Although I can still bring other applications up (other than the internet), it won't let me shut down or restart either. The only way to get the internet working again is to press the power button which I know I shouldn't do, but what choice do I have when it won't let me force quit, restart or shut down?
I am up to date with all the software updates. Because I was having this crashing problem I downloaded both iBoostUp (off app store) and MacKeeper off the internet to scan for hidden viruses etc, but it still hasn't eradiated the problem.

Tell us what Extensions you put there; if no extension, what other apps you installed BEFORE this began to occur.
You must fall under one of these situations.

  • Batch Rename Malfunction, Force Quit to fix.

    Hey guys.
    I use Bridge quite often to manage assets at my studio, and I'm very happy with it's performance to date.  I have one issue that I only learned about yesterday and was wondering if anyone else has encountered the same thing;
I had about 1200 assets I was partially renaming with the string substitution command in the batch rename.  (Just replacing number codes with the color that corresponded to it)
I was working with subfolders, 2 folders deep, and had the view options set to hide folders and show all subfolders. (So I had all assets lined up)
I selected all and then opened the batch rename dialogue.  I did a string subsitution, ok'ed it and it worked like a charm.
This is where I ran into problems.  Doing this process again, but changing the string sub variables, hit rename..... nothing.
The strangest part is that Bridge would still function, except for the batch changes, and the quit command.  I had to force quit, restart, and highlight, batch rename a bunch of times to get what i needed done.
Anyone experience anything similar to this?
    Cheers,
    Eric

Did try a string substitution on 100 files and after it had finished changed it back again with a new substitution without problems.
1200 is a large number, did you wait for Bridge to finish the job completely? because if not it might be that this caused your problem. And maybe resetting prefs may help you also ( restart Bridge holding down option key and choose reset prefs. This resets all prefs to factory default including File type associations. Normally not a big deal but you need to reset your custom settings again after this).
