Force Quit showing apps still open

I've noticed this on a few occasions. Currently, I'm showing iBooks, Pages, & Preview are still open via the Force Quit dialog but I haven't used them since the previous evening. (Screen shot of dialog and dock for comparison).
I have an older Macbook (Aluminum, Late 2008) so I try to run as lean as possible. There are no extra windows open that I can find.  Double clicking them from Force Quit brings them up to then quit from the application proper, however, I would really like the apps to quit when I tell them to.
Has this to do with iCloud integration? (Like Pages wasn't quite done with an iCloud upload before I quit).
Is it a random hang?
Should I try a reinstall of the apps or Mavericks? (I'm not even sure if 'still open app' is consistent).
Thanks in advance.

I've noticed this same problem, but with TextEdit and Preview.  The dock will say all my apps are closed, but when I check in Force Quit, some of them are still open.  Only noticed by accident once when I needed to Force Quit something else and was surprised by what was also listed in there as open.
As far as I can tell there are no negative effects of this happening . . . it's just annoying . . . which means Apple won't be fixing it anytime real soon.
I'm about to upgrade to Yosemite . . . wonder if it also happens there.
BTW, I've only seen it happen with Apple Apps . . . none of my other apps have shown up as "quit, but still open".
I'm on a Mac Mini running 10.9.5

  • IPhoto freezes when i open the app, each time it is open on the same photo and when i try to swap to another photo it freezes until i force quit the app.

I have recently come back from a trip to Venice, i uploaded my photos to iPhoto to view and edit them, half way through the photos from day three of my trip it has frozen on a particular photo. I force quit the app and then re open it and it is still on the same image with the exact same problem. I am now unable to view any photos of my trip as they're all on iPhoto and i cannot access the albums because they are stuck on this one photo. I need to be able to access them by 11th March because i have a project due in about our trip and we need to include the best of our photos and at the moment i am being stopped from even looking at them. PLEASE HELP!

    What version of iPhoto?
    Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

If you got disks with your system then you use software update to update. If you purchased the software from to app store or it came pre installed with no disks the you get updates via the app store under purchased software.

I could not get out of my Yahoo home page in Safari on my Imac. I had to force quit but when i opened back up the little light under the Safari icon was still on and when i tapped icon I was right back to the Yahoo page which would not close. Any ideas???

Quit Safari (by force if necessary.) Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. That will stop the page from reloading automatically.

My Aperture/Photoshop workflow paged out on my MBP even with 8 GB RAM. Personally I recommend simply upgrading to 16 GB RAM immediately. The limited RAM may or may not be the direct cause of your SBBOD but it is very likey that your MBP is paging out, and paging out is very slow which often does cause problematic operation.
If you want to evaluate whether or not you currently have adequate RAM on board:
Look at the Page Outs number under System Memory on the Activity Monitor app before starting a typical Aperture work session and write the number down. Recheck the Page Outs count after working and write the number down again. If the page outs change (manual calculation of ending page outs number minus starting page outs number) is not zero your workflow is RAM-starved.
Ignore the pie charts and other info in Activity Monitor because they are often misleading regarding RAM usage. For RAM analysis, manually count page outs.
If your test showed that page outs increased during operation you can
    • add RAM, very strongly recommended
    • and/or simply try to run Aperture by itself after restarting, a workaround
    • Restart before Aperture work sessions to clear possible memory leaks
Personally IMO maxxing out RAM to 16 GB from OWC or Crucial is a no-brainer at today's prices. More and more, app and OS designers are (rightfully) designing to take advantage of lots of RAM.
At 60% full your HDD is not overfilled but HDDs slow as they fill so IMO you should replace it with a larger drive SSD/HDD when it gets ~70% full. Also you may want to consider moving to a Referenced-Masters workflow with the Masters on external drives to keep your internal drive from overfilling.

  • How to force quit an app in IOS 7.0.4 on iPad 3 ?

I have searched on this topic, and see repeated references to the double click HOME button, then hold the particular app card, and swipe "up and away".
This does NOT work on my device.
I can double-click the HOME button, and see the app switcher row at the bottom, showing the running (or suspended) apps.  Holding a given card turns it gray, but then nothing else happens.  If I move as to swipe, the card simply un-grays -- there is no movement or any other action.  It will allow me to swipe left and right, but not up.
I have no other issues with the iPad and this release, that I know of.
    Thank you.

Microsoft Office 2004 (Word) unable to save files
I have been running Office 2004 on my Intel iMac with Snow Leopard for some time and all of a sudden I cannot save a document. Word just stopped responding and I have to force quit. I can open Word and create a new document but I cannot save it. I reinstalled Word but that didn’t help. Then went to the Internet and found at least one other Mac user having the same problem which it suggests is caused by a recent Mac Security Update:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2004-macword/word-2004-wil l-not-open-or-save-documents/b04eb870-9b0d-4f3b-bb47-b122301e36f6
So I check for a new Mac Security Update and sure enough there was one. I downloaded it and now Word seems to be working, as it should. I can both open and save files. The only problem remaining is that when I open Word I get the following error message “An unexpected error occurred while trying to load the Microsoft Framework library”. I contacted Apple but they were unable to help.
How can I get rid of this error message?

Look, I realize you might have to get your machine working, so this is how you revert back.
    Restore proceedure to pre-Security Update 2012-001 v 1.0 & v 1.1
#1 Backup your personal data off the machine.
Backup files off the computer (not to TimeMachine). If you don't have a external drive, get one and connect to the USB/Firewire port and simply drag and drop copy your User folder to the external drive, it will copy all your files. It's best to have two backups of your data off the machine when trying to restore.
Disconnect all drives now to prevent any mistakes from occuring.
    #2 Reinstall OS X 10.6 from disk
Get out your 10.6 install disk and make sure it's clean and polished (very soft cloth and a bit of rubbing alcohol, no scratches) If your disk is borked, you'll have to order a new one from Apple with your serial number.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk (wired keyboard, internal optical drive), use Disk Utility First Aid to >Repair Disk  of your internal drive  (do not format or erase!!), Quit DU and simply re-install 10.6.
Note: Simply reinstalling 10.6 version from disk (without erasing the drive) only replaces 10.6.8 with 10.6.x and bundled Apple programs, won't touch your files (backup anyway)  or most programs, unless they installed a kext file into OS X itself. (only a few on average do this)
    #3 Update to 10.6.8 without Security Update 2012-001 v1.0 or v1.1
Reboot and log in, update to 10.6.8 via Software Update, but EXCLUDE THE Security Update 2012-001 by checkinig the details and unchecking the blue check box.
#4 Reinstall any non-working third party programs
When you reboot, make sure to reinstall any programs that require kext files installed into OS X, you'll know, they won't work when you launch them or hang for some reason as they are missing the part they installed into OS X.
If for some freakish reason you get gray screen at any time when booting (possible it might occur when you reinstall older programs), hold the shift key down while booting (Safe Mode, disables kext files) and update your installed third party software so it's compatible with 10.6.8.

Make a temporary, backup copy if you don't have a backup copy of the library (select the library and type Command+D) and  apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #1, followed by #3 and then #4
    Launch iPhoto and try again.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Does Force Quitting The App have Any Harmful Effects?

    I have an iPod 3G.
To force quit an app, I heard that for newer models like mine, you have to hold down the hold button, and when the iPod asks you if you want to shut down, you press the home button for five seconds until the iPod returns to the springboard.
I heard that force quitting an app is good because it stops it from running in the background.
Is using this method harmful to your iPod in anyway at all?

iPod touch and iPhone run apps in what is known as a "sandbox". That is, each app is a separate process and starting, stopping, or force quitting has no effect on the OS or other apps.
As far as background apps go, the only one I can think of is Music. Everything else is the only app running at the time. The only time you should have to force-quit is if the app hangs up.
BTW, I think you are getting how the iPhone software operates confused with Android - which does keep a number of apps running in the background.

  • I can no longer open firefox. I get a message that it is already open but when I try to force quit the app it is not there.

I am running IMacs with an OS10.6x operating system. This problem has occurred on several of my machines now. I can still open firefox from alternate profiles on the same machine, but the student profile will give me the message that it is already open and can only have one instance running at a time.

Make sure that the profile that Firefox wants to use and that is specified in profiles.ini still exists. If that profile isn't found then you get that same error message.

  • Always have to force quit mail app

A few weeks ago, I starting having problems with my mail app on my imac. I have 2 mail accounts set up in the app, one is my mobile me and the other is through AOL. Before I updated my computer to snow leopard, this app worked fine. It seem to work fine for a few weeks after I did the update, but now once I open the mail app, in order to get new mail to show up in the inbox, I have to force quit out of the app and open it back up. I cannot just go to 'mail' and 'quit mail' the app freezes. I have tried clicking the 'get mail' button and nothing happens when clicking on it. I have also searched the support forums and have tried to delete the 'com.apple.mail.plist' file and nothing changes.
I am frustrated because I have this exact same set up on my macbook pro and things seem to work just fine. I have checked all the settings and they all match.
Any ideas? I am sick of force quitting and reopening mail when I want to see if I have new emails....
Anyway to just get rid of the mail app and reinstall this application. I dont want to have to re-install the entire snow leopard program and have to go through all the tedious work of putting all my stuff back on the computer.... (the first time I did the upgrade, for some reason my computer crashed, and I lost everything, had to call apple support and they had to talk me through the reinstall-- luckily I had everything backed up on disks)

Finder won't show you invisible Files (filenames beginning with a period). That's what makes fixing Mail such a hassle.
In Applications/Utilities you'll find a program called Terminal.app. It lets you access the command-line interface where you're free to do absolutely anything. Be careful there.
Open a Terminal window and paste this in:
    find ~/Library/Mail -name .\*
A list of invisible files files will be displayed. If it's just caches and index states, as I mentioned in the earlier posting, run the command again with the delete flag:
    find ~/Library/Mail -name .\* -delete
Don't run this if the first listing looks like it's showing e-mails. I also recommend checking that you have a backup first.
