Force quit

I am getting too many Force Quit/SBOD responses for too long. Why?
What can I do to fix it? I have been through trash cache, repair permissions, verify disk and trash Safari cache. Can I avoid reinstall system?

Hello Arthur,
It would help readers to assist you, if you would post some additional information.
For example,
What size is your Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
As Jeff Kelleher asked, which applications are affected?
Here are some additional help resources.

    Hey sunnyday7!
Here is an article that can help you address this issue:
OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3411
    Additional Information
OS X automatically relaunches the Finder when it is quit. If the Finder is unresponsive, use Force Quit to relaunch it. Select Finder in the Force Quit Window or Dock, then click Relaunch.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities. Have a good one!

  • Hi, I was trying to copy and paste a lot of  info for one day on my calendar to another day and an error message popped up saying that the system responded with an error. Msg won't go away I force quit ical

Need help for trying to unfreeze a message on my ical.  I was trying to copy and paste some appointment info from one day to another on my ical and a message popped up saying the system responded with an error.  All of my info was below the message.  I can't get that message to go away or work on the ical now at all.  I try to force quit ical and have shut down the computer and it still comes up.  Any suggestions?

    K,
Try removing the com.apple.iCal.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder. To find that Library folder, if you are using Lion, use Finder>Go Menu>Depress the "Option" key>Library. Drag the .plist file to your desktop, and log out/in or restart.
Next, make sure that you are not connected to the internet. Then to to your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Calendars Folder and remove any files with "Cache" as a part of the file name. Use the same method as listed above to get to the correct Library Folder. Log out/in, or restart and check iCal for functionality.

  • Safari will not open.  Just bounces in the dock and then I force quit it.

This is the report I got after force quitting it.  Note that I have received a different one on a prior force quit. Not sure if that is common.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software -- potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are four lines of text in monospaced type, which are actually shell commands -- little programs. They’re harmless, but they must be used exactly as given in order to work.
First and most important, don’t run these commands until you have verified that they’re legitimate. Never execute shell commands from an untrusted source without knowing what they do, or at least that they don’t do anything harmful. I’ve posted these same commands, with minor variations, many times on this site. You should be able to find other discussions in which they were used without ill effects. Do that before proceeding.
Some of the commands will probably line-wrap in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
To begin, launch the Terminal application; e.g., by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search.
    Step 1
Copy or drag -- do not type -- the line below into the Terminal window, then press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
    Step 4
    ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Sta}* 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address will appear in the output of the above command. Change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Force Quit Won't Work/Epic Lock Ups

So I just recently started having trouble with my Macbook Pro involving applications locking up, and then not being able to force quit. Oh, they pretend to force quit. In fact they show dialogues saying they've quit, and their windows disapear, however in the force quit box, the cmd+tab window, and the dock the apps are all still there.
If I try and do a force quit again from the dock, the finder locks up.
The only fix is to force my computer to reboot, which cannot be healthy doing so much.
Other weird bugs is that once I do this forced shutdown/reboot my external drives will be missing files I previously moved to them (say I moved from drive a to b, after this forced reboot they'll be back on a and not on b)
The only thing I can think that's causing it is I have an external drive that's been acting up and I didn't start having this problem until the drive starting acting up... but I wouldn't think they're related!
Any ideas? I don't want to destroy my computer!

    True.

Why not? That's the first place I'd look! It's likely your Mac is going nutso (pardon the technical term) trying to talk to a disk that isn't behaving. Eject that drive and see if the problems stop. If they do, back it up immediately if you can. Then try repairing the disk and permissions.
You might also look in your logs. Note the time of an incident, then use the Console app (Applications/Utilities). Click Show Log List in the toolbar, then select Console Messages in the sidebar and navigate to the date & time of the incident.
Most of the messages there are gibberish to us mere mortals, but some may provide a clue or two. Copy a representative sample and post here, if you wish.

  • ITunes 10.7 crashes all apps on Mountain Lion including Force Quit. First system wide prob with an apple computer since OSX introduced. Any ideas?

updated to iTunes 10.7  from app Store last night. After the update, iTunes opens then stalls with the "spinning pizza wheel". Force Quit is unresponsive and will not shut it down. If I then open other applications say Safari for example, the problem migrates over to Safari and it similarly stalls and becomes unresponsive. The only way to solve the problem is to manually shut the computer down. This is the most significant problem I have experienced on an apple computer since OSX was introduced because it impacts on Force Quit which means that you have to shut the whole deal down. There are obvious problems for use of Apple TV and apple store etc. ! I am running mountain lion 10.8.1 on a 27" iMac with 2T Time Capsule connected wirelessly. How do I downgrade iTunes back to 10.6? I had no problems with Mountain Lion or iTunes up to that point.

this is the exact same problem i've been dealing with for the past 2 days. after i installed itunes 10.7 for my iphone5 it would crash my mbp's lion system wide. i tried every solution i could find on google and i've actually had to reinstall lion & time machine my backups because of it. right now i'm too scared to redownload itunes 10.7. i actually feel like waiting for the "new itunes" that comes out in october.

  • Upgraded to Firefox 4.0.1 for Mac, constantly freezes and crashes, have to force quit, bad bugs. Switching to Safari.

I upgraded to Firefox 4.0.1, and it now constantly freezes, won't respond at all, and has to be force quit and restarted. Within less than 5 minutes of use, over and over and over... I'm assuming it is a bug in the Mac version.... Am switching to Safari as I can't waste this much time constantly quitting and restarting and getting my tabs all back up. Any suggestions on ways to let Firefox know about the bug would be greatly appreciated. It worked fine until I upgraded :( Am running Mac OS X 10.6.7

  • Force quit Safari

    hello everyone,
I have a curious problem with Safari. It has worked beautifully for me in Snow Leopard, so much so that I almost never launch Chrome or Firefox anymore. But, in the last 24 hours or so it's become erratic and unusable. I can't imagine anything I might have done to contribute to this problem. I often run Safari with three or four windows open, and a number of tabs on each window. Never been a problem until now. I believe the following to be the correct sequence of events since yesterday afternoon when I first noticed the problem.
I always have Safari running along with Mail, Prevue, TextEdit and a couple of other programs. Yesterday I was mailing a few parcels. I purchase postage electronically using a program called Endicia which tabulates the correct amount, validates the address etc. I have a Zebra 2844 thermal printer for this application. Two or three times in the last year while printing labels I have switched back and forth to another application (using the command+tab function) and have found myself with the dreaded screen freeze. Years ago we just pulled the plug when that happened but now with my laptop I usually just hold down the on/off button until the screen goes black and the computer turns off.
I had such a screen freeze yesterday. I turned the machine off and back on, and re-launched the programs I was using, including Safari. When launching Safari I immediately clicked on the history tab and opened all the windows from the last session. That's when the problem started. While navigating to a new page, either with a mouse click or using the command+L function and typing an address the program would respond and a few seconds later I had a spinning beach ball on my screen. I'd wait for a couple of seconds and then look up the force quit window to see if Safari had stopped responding, and it always had. I'd force quit the program and try again. After four tries I gave up and launched Firefox. I tried Safari again this morning, albeit without shutting down, and I encountered the same problem again. It worked for a minute or two and then it would stop responding.
An aside. I noticed yesterday after re-booting my machine that bluetooth was not functioning properly. At my office I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and neither would respond to a pairing request. I turned bluetooth on and off three or four times, as well as the devices, and finally something clicked and they began working again. This may having nothing whatever to do with the Safari problem, but I've learned in the last 15 years or so (I started with OS 6) to provide as much detail as you can when describing problems. I should also add I'm lazy about clearing the history or cookie caches (hope I'm saying that correctly).
Hope you all have a great weekend, and thanks for reading... If anyone has any suggestions about this issue I'd love to hear them.
    Best wishes,
    Tim

There is something wrong with your safari brower, I would make sure that you are running 6.0, or whatever you current version is, and then if you still have the problem I would hold down command+option+esc and force quit safari. I hope you solve your problem. I am a newbie so please say that I solved your question. Thanks a ton

  • Acrobat Pro Freezes completely so I need to Force Quit

I hope I am posting in the right place.  Please let me know if I should move this.  I am so desperate-- I have tried everything I can think of and I hope someone has another idea I can try.
I am using Acrobat Pro.  When the problem started I was using Pro X.  I tried upgrading to the trial Acrobat XI to see if that fixed the problem, but it didn't.  I don't care which I use as long as it works.
The program starts up, but I can't click on any of the choices on the "splash screen" (where you can choose Open a Recent File or Select a Task).  When I roll over the choices I see the rollover highlight, but nothing happens when I click.  I can open a file from the FILE menu, but when I do I can't do anything with it.  None of the tools on the window tool bar work.  Then the whole thing freezes and I have to Force Quit to close the program.
I am on a Mac running Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5 with a 3.2 GHz Intel Cose i3 processor and 12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory.  When the problem started I was using Lion 10.7.5, so I tried upgrading to Mountain Lion, but it didn't fix the problem.
Here is what I have tried:
    > Uninstalling and reinstalling Acrobat Pro X numerous times
    > Installing, uninstalling, reinstalling Acrobat Pro XI
    > Installing in Safe Mode
    > Uninstalling every other Adobe product I had (After Effects Trial, inDesign 5, Adobe Reader)
I also tried various things I found in the Forums-- so many that I can't remember now.  One had to do with moving certain preference files and opening the program again, one was the fix for a CS6 conflict problem.
When the problem first started I discovered that my Time Machine backup was not working because my backup disc was full and Time Machine wasn't deleting the old backups.  I didn't have a recent backup so I didn't want to do a system restore to before the problem.  I got a new 4TB external drive for Time Machine, and got a 3TB external drive to clear a bunch of large documents off my main hard drive.
I am willing to try anything.  Please help!!!
    Katie

Well, after two weeks of pulling my hair out I finally figured it out last night!  The problem was a bad mouse driver.  I use an Evoluent mouse (which I LOVE) but it is an older model and I suppose the update from OX 10.7.4 to 10.7.5 just kicked the driver into incompatiblity.  I had tested the mouse a week or so ago and my Mac wireless mouse worked but didn't solve the problem because when I did the test I didn't actually unplug the Evoluent mouse.  Once I did that last night, and used only the Mac wireless mouse, Acrobat went back to working properly.
I just ordered the newest Evoluent mouse which is compatible with OS X.  I can't wait for it to arrive tomorrow!!
Thank you to everyone who viewed this question and tried to think of a solution.

  • Firefox/Safari were constantly crashing- now have to force-quit all other apps on MBP..

I really hope someone can help me. I've been having an issue with apps on my MBP crashing for like 9 months and it's getting worse and I'm losing my mind! It started with Firefox. Everything will be going along fine, and then suddenly I'll try to scroll down on a web page or click a link or really do anything and there will be a rainbow scrolly wheel delay that can last anywhere from 5-20 seconds.  I'll tolerate it for a little while, but eventually I can't take it anymore and try to shut down Firefox, which I can only do with a force quit.  Sometimes the delay is accompanied by a crazy increase in CPU which triggers the fans, but sometimes it's not.  It usually happens when I have multiple tabs open.  A while back I tried removing all my Firefox add-ons and plug-ins and whatnots (including Flash and Java), to no avail.  So I broke down and started using Safari...and the same thing happened. Went back to FF and keep upgrading to the newest versions, but the problem hasn't gone away.
Then, a couple of months ago, a few of my other "big" apps (i.e. iTunes and Adobe Reader) started experiencing similar delay issues.  No scrolly wheel appears on these, but everything  just takes forever and the only way to close these apps is to force quit.  Over the past month or so, the issue has  spread to my MS Office apps.  For these, the delay is largely contained to opening and closing new docs/presentations, but I have to force quit to close them too.
In February, I decided to move to Lion, but changed my mind when I read that people were still having issues with decreased speed and spotty internet connectivity.  I was afraid to do anything that might make things worse.
My MBP is turning 5 this month. I wouldn't be entirely surprised to hear that she's just experiencing the effects of old-age (after all, 5 years is  2X longer than my old PC lasted), but I've been unemployed for well over 2 years and am not exactly itching to get a new computer right now if I don't have to.  I did upgrade the hard drive about a year ago, but things were fine for the first few months after that.  Maybe that wouldn't create problems right away, though. I don't know.  Anyway, I'm running OS 10.6.8, Firefox 13, iTunes 10.6.1, Adobe Reader 10.1.3 and Office 2008.
I would be most grateful to anyone who can offer a potential home-repair solution (one which does not require mad IT skills), knows what the problem might be and/or how much it might cost to have it professionally diagnosed/repaired.  Depending on what it could cost to diagnose/fix it, it might not even pay to bother.
    Thank you!!!

    Mark,
Have you checked the Fonts folder found in Home/Library/Fonts folder if you have any fonts in there, try moving them to the trash but do not empty the bin.
Read Kurt Lang's ~ Font Management in Mac OS X
on required fonts, for apple applications.
This app is a goodie Font Finagler helps find & remove corrupt fonts.
Have you tried a test account so you can narrow done if this is isolated to your username account, or if it is system wide.
Disabling "troublemakers" doesn't always work, uninstalling can be more telling & what are they anyway the troublemakers you speak of?
What have you tried to troubleshoot?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25392
Do you use any internet cleaning apps to clean internet clutter?
    OnyX Niel'sClearing caches with OnyX
Cache cleaning does help, but beyond empty the cache under Safari.
Checked the console.log & system.log for any clues?
Lastly are you very committed to running 10.4.7? (If your spex are correct)
if you decide to update see Macmaps , yes this hanging of apps. should be tended
    first.

  • Since upgrading to Firefox 8.0.1, it is hanging when I try to open it. Deleting profiles etc. doesn't help. I suspect the problem has to do with caching or history, since when I first quit after upgrading I had to force-quit as it was hanging.

'''bold text'''MacOS 10.5.8 is my operating system.
There is no actual crash, thus no crash ID--it just hangs forever and eventually I force-quit.
    Restarting the computer hasn't helped
Downgrading to previous versions didn't help.
Deleting profiles and preferences doesn't seem to make any difference.
    Apparently clean re-installs hasn't helped.
If option-opening is really safe mode on a Mac, then that isn't helping, either. It's the same hanging.
No problems are being noted with any other software.
    I'm totally stumped--what else can I take off for a cleaner re-install?

Firefox hangs the same way in safe mode.
There is no such thing as a Firefox program folder on a Mac, nor is there an "uninstall" to do, so these directions are not relevant to a Mac user.
    The problem remains.

  • Finder won´t work. It doesn´t open any of my files, and when I try to force quit, it flahses, so i can´t click it. Help!!

I have a Macbook Pro. I´ve just installed Lion version 10.7.3.
Basically, one day I turned on my computer, and all my desktop folders and pictures were missing. And the finder just kept flashing with screen that said "finder quit while trying to restore all it´s windows" And you had the option between clicking To re-open the windows or not. Thing is, doesn´t matter what you clicked, because the thing kept flashing, so you couldn´t click it.
I ended up using the "killall finder" Code in terminal to close it.
But when that ended, turns out i can´t accsess any of my files. I can search them in spotlight, and if they are images, i can see them, but I´m uncapable of using my folders because they won´t open. Also, if you click the "Finder" app, it just opens the "All my files" Tab, for a split second before closing. I can´t force quit it, because when i open the force quit tab, the finder keeps flashing, so I can´t click it. Finder is killing me.

Lightroom doesn't use the Camera Raw plug-in. All of the Camera Raw technology is part of the Lightroom program. You will either have to upgrade to Lightroom 5 or use the DNG converter to create digital negative copies that can be used with Lightroom 4.
