Force Quitting active Application

When holding down Shift & clicking the Apple menu whilst having an Application active, "Force Quit..." becomes "Force Quit xxx" whereby xxx is the current Application.
I'm having trouble using the keyboard shortcut for this command, Option + Shift + Apple + Esc (as listed next to the item) don't work.
Must I enable something to allow the use of this?

Nah mate, not that.
I can open the Force Quit window just fine.
I'd like to use the Force Quit <active application> keyboard command you are given when holding Shift & viewing the Apple menu.
"Click the Apple menu, keep your eyes fixed on the "Force Quit..." command, and press Shift. You'll see "Force Quit..." change into "Force Quit Safari" (or whatever app you have selected).
You'll also notice the key command beside it adds a Shift, although pressing the given key combination doesn't work as it should. "

See what I mean?
"Keyboard shortcut is commandoptionesc. You've been adding the shift key which doesn't do anything. "
That's the point, adding Shift SHOULD do something.

i currently use a iMac OS X 10.6.8 and I cannot open iPhoto. Every time I click on iPhoto the coloured wheel comes up and lets me go no further, leaving me with no other option but to force quit the application.
it is showing all my existing photos but will not let me click on any of them, nor will it allow me to import any new photos into iPhoto.
I am really worried that I cannot access all of my photos and even more worried as I need to back them up!!
    HELP!!

    Try repair the Library:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • How do you force quit an application

my mail is frozen and now so is safari what's going on and how do i force quit the apps

COMMAND-OPTION-ESC will bring up a Task Manager. Select the item and click on the Force Quit button.
CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the application's Dock icon and select Force Quit from the contextual menu.
Open Activity Monitor in your Utilities folder. Locate the application in the list, select it, click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Then click on the Force Quit button.

  • OS X freezes whenever I cannot force quit an application

About twice a week I have an application that will hang. Usually when I close my MacBook Pro while the app is running.
The app will not quit or force quit, if I try to restart the OS, it hangs and I have to hold the power button down to shut it off.
I think I am on my 20th powerdown this way and it drives me nuts.
This is my first Mac and it has been like this the entire time.
Support has no answer form me other than reinstall everything. (BTW they wont support me since I reported the problem too late, how was I supposed to know this was unusual, I was using XP before and this was normal)
I also have Boot Camp with Vista 64 installed and it is perfect. The only time I reboot Vista is to boot OS X, which is soon to be never if I cannot get this fixed.
The machine is awesome but only Vista works correctly. Why is OS X the sucky one on Apple hardware?

There are 3rd-party wired keyboards which work well with Macs, and which can generate the standard suite of Mac shortcuts. This can be critical if you ever need to invoke certain commands at startup.
These are usually less expensive than the Apple-brand choices. Look for ones which state expilictly that they are Mac-compatible. Macally offers several models which are compatible with all Mac keyboard commands, including the startup set.

  • Must force quit Mail application

I am most used to using Entourage as my mail application but have been trying to use Mail but it constantly freezes and then I must Force Quit to start over. Keep going back to Entourage but of course I need Mail, for example, if I want to mail contents of webpage in Safari. What's the deal with Mail. Are there known problems?

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Leave checked (enabled) only the port configuration needed to connect to Internet and Built-in Ethernet (in that order if not the same), uncheck (disable) the rest of network port configurations, and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
Do you have any Mail plug-ins? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/Mail/Bundles/
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
To make accurately reporting this information easier, you may open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you can just copy it here and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>. You can then copy the output of that command from Terminal and paste it in your reply to this post:
    ls -1 /Library/InputManagers /Library/Mail/Bundles ~/Library/InputManagers ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Force-quitting an application

I was wandering whether it could harm an application to be force-quit, or if one can only use unsaved preferences and files being worked on with that application.
I - for instance - force-quit "Software Update" while it was scanning my system for updates, because it took too long. Could this do something to the program "Software Update" itself? What exactly does "force-quit" do?
    I'm just curious...

It depends on what the application is doing at the time. If it is writing a file, you will end up with a corrupt file. Force Quitting Software Update while it is scanning should be safe, but if you do it while it is actually doing an update, you could have serious troubles.
Force Quit tells an application to STOP RIGHT NOW, so a lot of safety features (Do you want to save this file before quitting) don't work.

  • Cannot force quit Mail application or turn off computer

My Mail application has been quite buggy the past few days -- today, it's been at it's worst, and will not allow me to close the application or force shut down on my computer. It very randomly decided to start saving one of my failed messages into my "Recovered Mail" folder multiple times, and now it shows next to my Inbox messages that they were last viewed on "January 1, 1970"
I've tried to force quit Mail and it simply won't close. I need to restart my computer, and even holding down power does nothing... it keeps telling me Mail needs to close first.
I've ran two virus scans and it says nothing is wrong but I'm baffled. Any help or ideas? Thank you

    Hi eulojoy,
Some questions about your mail application:
1.) How many email accounts are you checking?
2.) Are they POP, IMAP and/or Exchange?
3.) How many messages do you have in each of those accounts? Hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands?
Did you recently run any OS X updates, such as the one from 10.6.3 to 10.6.4? Has anything changed on your system since the last time Mail worked properly? Do you run any 3rd party plugins for Mail?

  • Print Alert appeared on the main screen and I cant restart/shut down the computer or quit/force quit the application!!!

I was trying to print a recipe, then the print alert window appeared saying something about changes cant be made during print.
I didn't try to do any editing after I clicked print, however, there was an option on the website if I wanted to print with images or not, I clicked on no images. The print setup window appeared, I clicked on print, then the alert window appeared!!!

Hold on now we may still have a few trick up our sleeves...
1st - If you are having trouble with the drive and can not boot... the try to boot int safeboot (safemod): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 Safemode will automatically run disk verification and I believe try to fix any errors. So try to boot into safemode and if it is successful then reboot and see if that helped.
2nd - If safeboot does not work then you can try to boot into single user mode: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492 Once you are in the Single user mode type the following:
    fsck -fy <then press enter>
If this command returns with an error or reports that is found an error but fixed it then run the command again and repeat until the drive checks good.
Once you are done with the repair or feel satisfied, type 'reboot' and press enter.

  • I got a Force Quit error box telling me to quit two applications because my startup disk was out of memory to run applications. What is this?

I have a MacBook (mid-2007) with 2gb ram (max allowed) and recently upgraded to a 750 GB hard drive. And I have over 590 GB free Tonight I got a popup box requiring me to force quit my applications because I had run out of room on my startup disk. I was only running the finder, I-clean memory, Safari and mail at the time. I have been running that combination of programs forever and have never encountered this message. What is going on?

  • Why do I have to Force Quit applications?

Pages 09, safari and iCal won't shut down. I have to force quit the application every time. I have reinstalled OS X (tiger that came with the iMac G5) and upgraded it through Software update. It is very annoying. I have also used disk utility and vertified the HD, which seems to be fine. Also ran OnyX. Also tells me everything's fine. Anyone know what might be causing this behaviour? Thank you.

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode, (do those APPs Quit OK?)...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot and not in Safe Mode, then it is likely some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Also see what is in System Preferences>Other Row.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...
    /private/var/run/StartupItems
    /Library/StartupItems
    /System/Library/StartupItems

  • My dock would not appear. No change after a restart. After force quitting applications in order to log out all I have now is my account desktop picture and a cursur that moves okay but no icons.

My dock would not appear. Checked preferences, they seemed to be locked. No change after a restart. Tried logging out of account, had to force quit several applications. Now all I have is the account desktop picture and a cusur that works okay. nothing else is on the desktop now. How do I restore?

All I had to do was complain.  I synced my iPhone to the Windows machine, checked the other account at iTunes prompting (where no apps had shown up previously), reconnected the iPad, and 140 apps downloaded including the App Store.  I have no idea why.

  • When I try to quit Firefox, the open page closes, but the application does not. Must Force Quit to close the application.

I am using a Macbook running 10.6.8 with Firefox version 9.0.1. Recently, when trying to close the Firefox application, the open page disappears, but the application stays open, but is unresponsive. I must force Quit the application at this point. If I try to work in the Menu Bar I get the spinning beach ball until I do the Force Quit. This isn't right and is making me nervous about the reliability of this browser.

    Hi swf13245-
Is Firefox working ok up until it freezes when you try to close it? I found an article on how to troubleshoot Firefox when it hangs- but this typically is for users who have trouble while using the application as opposed to just when shutting it down:
    [[Firefox hangs]]
    Hope that helps.

  • Application crashes on Force quitting the app

I am Force quitting the application while it is running correctly.
During quit process, application exited with crash.
    My questions are:
    1. When Application is force quit, Application does not have any control over the flow of events?
    2. After force quit application behaviour can not be controlled?
    3. Force Quit is an abnormal termination and it could be any thing which cannot be controlled by the application as the application is flushed out by Mac OS X itself whitout giving any event to  the application?
    4. Abort call send by OS can be handled by application or its a OS related call? Can application handle such scenarios itself?
    Thanks

  • Force Quit has no effect

    hi guys,
I had a rather "funny" problem (once). I had my macbook in sleep mode and I opened it to use it (as usual). This time, however, iTunes was frozen (spinning wheel of death!) and I tried force quitting the application. After a while it showed me the dialog "iTunes quit blablabla" and I clicked ignore (there was no restart application button this time). The white symbol under iTunes however didn't go away. I could still right click on it and try to "force quit" it. I think it might've had something to do with my iPod that was plugged in (all the time, even during sleep). However, here's the "funny" part:
When I wanted to quit the iTunes process in Activity Monitor the Activity Monitor didn't start and I had to Force Quit it too! The dialog box showed up but the blue circle in the dock stayed.
I couldn't restart the application (error -400?) and the console didn't give any smart messages. Terminal wouldn't find the ("top") processes and and I couldn't find a way to get the programs working again. I tried all kind's of things with the "Force Quit" and my iPod but nothing helped. Any other Application worked fine! I only had that problem once though... A restart helped and so far I haven't had this problem again. Did anyone of you encounter this too??
P.S.: I am a switcher who thought Leopard would be great... and, it is! But not as great as expected...
Maybe apple knows that Leopard was released too early which is why they are building new seeds for 10.5.3 so aggresively. However, I am very glad to have switched to mac

uh! that sounds bad! My macbook is just a couple of months old... got it for christmas...
I don't think it's the hard drive... but... hmmm... wasn't there this article on the internet that some harddrives used in macbook were assembled wrong? I checked though, my harddrive does not belong to that group... well, anyway. a backup is always good
