Force Quitting Applications

Good Morning All,
Is there documentation anywhere on force quitting applications and why it should be done as a last resort? I have a user who ALWAYS

Essentially these are the side effects of force quit:
1. Documents aren't saved. Of course a File menu -> Save document will save the document's latest changes.
2. Open documents find themselves corrupted.
3. Open backup cache documents may get corrupted, making an application unexpectedly quit the next time it is opened, or the document next time it is opened unexpectedly quit.
If force quit is being done because the application can't close, it is probably due to #3 having been done at an inopportune time in the past.
Sometimes a force quit is impossible to stop because a 4 language screen comes up telling someone they must restart. This is known as a kernel panic. Find out from them if they have seen any kernel panics. Also find out if they ever spent more than half an hour unable to quit the application because the beachball cursor comes up and nothing functions.
Is the data on the machine backed up? We could discover why a spinning beachball may be happening, or kernel panics may be happening only if the data is backed up.

I keep getting told that I have no more application memory and have to force quit applications. Why does this happen and how do I fix it? This issue has only started since I started using Mavericks 10.9.2.

  • Application Not listed In Force Quit Applications Window

I running an application that is not displaying in the Force Quit Applications window.
When Adobe Lightroom 3 is running it is not listed.
I have quit the application and relaunched it and it still is not appearing in the list of Applications that are running.
What may have happened? How can I remedy this issue?
    Thank you.

Why do you need to invoke the force quit? Are you experiencing hangups, freezes, or ?
When you have the Help section pop up window of an application open, the app itself stays "hidden" until you close the help window - you have to get used to closing that first.

  • Why do i have to keep Force quitting applications ever since i upgraded to Mountain lion. It is very annoying when applications cannot be existed normally

Why do i have to keep Force quitting applications ever since i upgraded to Mountain lion. It is very annoying when applications cannot be existed normally.

Does your system meet these Mountain Lion System Requirements?:
    General Requirements
    OS X v10.6.8 or later
    2GB of memory
    8GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
    Supported
    Models
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
And as user macsonrisanoted above, 4 GB of RAM is the practical minimum amount of RAM that Mountain Lion really needs since the OS itself uses at least that much often by itself.

  • HT1338 force quit applications

force quit applications keeps popping up.how do i fix this?

It should only happen if you have command-option-escape depressed.  Try hooking a different keyboard.  If you have speakable items turned on, it may have a shortcut to force quit that is activated by another shortcut.  Check your speakable item shortcuts.  There is a menu for force quit in the Apple menu which may be selected by some shortcut program.

  • Have to force quit applications

I'm finding that I'll be working and have 4-5 programs up at a time (Outlook, itunes, Safari, Photoshop & Illustrator) and I'm constantly watching my Activity Monitor because I don't want files to freeze (spinny rainbow wheel). Even then I end up having to force quit a lot of the time. Why can't I work on multiple programs at once.
Also, I'll be in a program and go to open a file and won't be able to see all my folders. Any suggestions?

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for action in Safe Mode, (do those APPs Quit OK?)...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot and not in Safe Mode, then it is likely some 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Also see what is in System Preferences>Other Row.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Error 'Force Quit Applications'

what does it mean when an error for force quit comes up and it says "Your Mac OS X startup disk how no more space available for application memory"?

The error essentially means your computer is out of memory.

  • Automatically force quit applications in a networked lab

I am trying to maintain a new lab of 20 iMacs running OS 10.6.8 and a security application called Deep Freeze. Using Energy Saver in the System Preferences, I have scheduled the computers to wake at 5:55 AM, then shut down at 6:00 AM. The shut down activates Deep Freeze, which restores the machines to a default set-up, undoing any changes -- malicious or accidental -- made by students the day before. The problem is that these students tend to get up once class is over and leave applications open, which in turn, will sometimes prevent the scheduled shut-down. Is there a way that I can automatically schedule a force-quit of all opened applications in the middle of the night so that I can then run my other scheduled tasks?
    Thanks

Yes, plenty of Hard Drive space...only using about 25% of the drive.

  • Force quitting applications only makes things worse...

iTunes has never presented me with so many problems:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1426749&tstart=0
Adium and Transmission also having this problem where the application freezes (at the most random times), then force quitting (which used to be the only way out) and then the computer won't start any applications just spinning that beach ball taunting me. I know no one has any idea, but just thought I should post it. Anyone else?
Note: The same thing happens with iTunes, which being a first-party product with the OS makes me think twice before hitting Force Quit on any app.

  • Force quitting applications isn't working

    Hi there,
I have some applications that aren't working properly and when I force quit them the curser just spins and spins but doesn't shut down the application. How do you shut app's down when the force quit function doesn't do it? Thanks!

Try force quitting them in your Activity Monitor.

  • How come a force quit application would NOT quit?

    Hi,
I have now had two instances when an application which I needed to force quit, would not quit.
Both instances were with _*Elgato EyeTV version 2.5(3011)*_. OK the application would look as if it quits and disappear form the screen, but when checking in the DOCK the little triangle is there there. There was an error message "-600".
I tried to repeat force quit to no avail. Douple clicking to restart the programme fully would not work either. Restarting would however resolve the problem.
I suppose I should have tried to kill the application in TERMINAL.
    Any other explanations?
Has anybody else come across resilient applications like that?
    Regards

    Thanks,
I agree - force quit works better when first activating the Finder. If that gives you the rolling ball, trying the Activity Monitor is a good option.
But the two events I am referring to are clearly different: ok, I used the Blue Apple Force Quit option, but the application would only sort of 'half quit'. There would be an error message: - 600. Also the Activity triangle in the dock would still be there. It would again be listed as an active application in the Blue Apple 'Force Quit' window. Force quitting in this window, would again remove it from that list, but the triangle would remain unchanged.
Also starting the application again would not work. - OK, I did not try killing it in TERMINAL then,
as I was about to switch off anyway. I used the Blue Apple option for that. No problems with it.
Restarting later was without problems either.
It just looks as if this particular application Elgato EyeTV +*would get stuck 'half way' after force quitting*+... Odd!
Have you observed anything like that with any application?
    Regards

  • Can't force quit applications problem during Time Machine backups

I've run into a frustrating problem with Time Machine. I'm using an external 750gb USB hard drive as a backup disk with my Mac Mini; the connection is visa the Firewire 400 port.
When I'm doing anything that's CPU-intensive while a Time Machine is backing up, it is a 50-50 chance that one or more applications will crash. It is impossible to Force Quit them, which means that it is impossible to log out or shut down. The user is faced with a choice: Kill the whole system, and risk corrupting the system hard drive, or yank out the Time Machine disk's connector, and risk corrupting the Time Machine backup. Of course the latter is preferred, and that's what I've done. Thus far, I haven't seen any corruption on the Time Machine drive, fortunately, but in order to work with my system, I have had to disable Time Machine backups while I am working. (I reconnect the Time Machine drive overnight.)
I know from some Google searching that others are experiencing this problem. My question is, has anyone figured out why this is happening, or developed a workaround?
    Regards,
    Bryan

In the process of restoring my MacBookPro from an external TM drive as we speak. I can say with almost 100% certainty that force restarting (holding the power-button down until the book shuts off) will corrupt your start up disk to some extent.
My problem is that I was away from my network when TM tried to do an update. I'm not sure if TM was actually able to connect to my server but none the less I was on a verizon wireless card and so even a minor backup would have been slow.
I needed to shut the computer down and leave. I have had TM hang when trying to shut down and tried to tell it to stop the back-up (which it tries to do for hours on end and have had to force quit before... had to run disk first aid that time) So this time I figured Id leave the computer on (though unplugged) while I drove home.
I did not close the case until the screen went dark. Unfortunately, it had just gone to sleep (a half hour later) instead of shutting off but I did not know that at the time so I shut the case then.
When I plugged it in in the AM it was dark but not black... I could just see the screen and could see it was frozen. Force restart completely screwed my startup disk. Luckily I have a BU from the night before.
Maybe TM should also be linked to the location, and or connection you are using. So, if I am away from my LAN it will automatically turn off. I also wish I could set it to back up every x hours instead of every hour.
Good idea... just needs some work on the routines. (only an hour left on my restore now)

  • Why do I have to Force Quit applications?

Pages 09, safari and iCal won't shut down. I have to force quit the application every time. I have reinstalled OS X (tiger that came with the iMac G5) and upgraded it through Software update. It is very annoying. I have also used disk utility and vertified the HD, which seems to be fine. Also ran OnyX. Also tells me everything's fine. Anyone know what might be causing this behaviour? Thank you.
