Force Yosemite to forget wireless credentials?

I manage a few dozen MacBooks for a university, which are shared among faculty. They are checked out for a maximum of a week at a time, and some are delivered on a per-class basis as well.
I need to be able to force Yosemite to forget the credentials they use to sign in to our wireless network every time they disconnect, turn off the wireless radio, or shut the computer down. If the credentials are saved, this creates a situation where one user may turn on the computer, be connected automatically under a previous users credentials, and then download something illicit or worse, introduce a virus to the network.
I have tried leaving the "remember networks" box unchecked, but for whatever reason this does not prevent OSX from creating a keychain store for the first user name and password that is used to sign in to the network. Is there any way to make sure that OSX asks for a user name and password every time someone connects to our wireless network?

Thanks Slyder.
That seems to have worked. When the ATV started up again, the preferred network was selected. Thanks.
What I didn't think of until later was this:
The Remote HD application (iOS client, ATV host) enables you to run applications on the ATV, including System Preferences. It also provides a trackpad and keyboard interface for the ATV. I ran Network Preferences and deleted the unwanted network. Now I'm sure it will start with the right one!
BTW - Remote HD <http://www.remotehd.com/AppleTV/Overview> is a great app for remote access to your Mac and your ATV.

  • How do I get Windows XP to forget wireless settings

I've had a perfectly good wireless network for several years using a WRT54GS router wired to my dektop machine. My laptop has connected wirelessly with no problems. I was using WEP security.
Recently I added a Logitech Squeezebox Duet to the network along with a WRE54G Range Expander. This combination required that I change the security to WPA-TKIP. In order to do this, I ended up giving the network a totally new name and setting it up manually in XP on my desktop using the Windows Wireless Network Setup Wizard. This works for a while, but then at seemingly random times Windows reverts the network back to WEP security. I'd like to go into XP and wipe out all the past wireless network info, but I can't find any way to do it. The Help says there should be a Wireless tab in the Network connections window, but I don't have one. I'm not sure if this is because I have a wired connectioni to the router or because the Linksys router isn't supported or what?
Any ideas how to clean out all the Windows information, or any other thoughts on getting Windows to forget WEP?

I'm afraid I may have confused things by jumping to conclusions about where my problem was, so let me start over:
    1. I have a Desktop machine that has a wired connection to my WRT54GS Router/Access Point. The internet connection is through the Router and there is also a wired Network Printer on the network. All of this is working properly in all cases.
    2. I have a Laptop machine that has a wireless connection through the Router. This machine can see and use both the internet and the Network Printer whether my wireless security is set up as WEP or as WPA.
    3. When I set up my wireless security as WEP I can connect from my Laptop to my Desktop and access the Desktop files. I just reverted my security to WEP this morning and confirmed that this is working.
    4. However, when I set my wireless security as WPA, I can not access the Desktop machine even though the internet and Network Printer access is working properly (which must mean the wireless network itself is properly configured).
I have been assuming that I must set up wireless network access on the Desktop machine in order for my laptop to access it. Is this correct? If so, I have been unable to get WPA security set up using the Windows Wireless Network Setup Wizard. It keeps reverting to WEP. And I have no wireless tab in the Network Connections folder. I need WPA security to get my Squeezebox to work, so I'm stuck.

  • Yosemite keeps forgetting my window arrangement

    I'm running OS X Yosemite, 10.10.2 on a:
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014)
Processor 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
I have an extra monitor plugged into the laptop via a thunderbolt adaptor, and I've set the windows arrangement so that the monitor is above the laptop.
Every time I restart or turn off my Macbook, it forgets this setting and places the monitor to the left of the laptop.
Is there any way I can get it to remember this setting?
I've already tried a couple of solutions I found online for OS X Mavericks that involved clearing or deleting the window settings plist file under
Finder -> Go -> Library -> Preferences -> ByHost, but to no avail.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • Yosemite 10.10 Wireless Diagnostics WiFi Scan not working

I just upgraded to Yosemite 10.10 and I can't use the WiFi Scan function in Wireless Diagnostics app anymore (my router is a last generation airport extreme).
When I perform a WiFi Scan, Wireless Diagnostics either crashes and quits or the wheel keeps running forever.
Is this a Yosemite known bug?

It used to have a wifi scanner in Mavericks, like this http://letstalk-tech.com/access-wifi-scanner-mac-os-x-mavericks/
But seems like "Utilities" no longer available in Yosemite, anyone knows about why?

  • IPad forgets wireless network

We have a wireless network setup where the SSID is not visible and we use WPA-PSK for security.  It's a very long key, but once it's entered, you have access.  If I leave the office and connect at a place like a hotel or coffee shop, when I get back to the office the previous wireless network has to be setup again.  Am I missing something in the setup to get it to retain the information?

To access the wifi in the school, each person must login with their own login and password. Each teacher and student has their own login and password.
No matter what school I go to in the region, the iPad will recognize the wireless and automatically login me in.
We are introducing 15 iPads into my classroom to be used by 5 different classes over the course of the day. When the first student get his iPad, he will log in to the wireless with his unique login and password.
At the end of the period, is there an easy way to take the iPad off the wifi network and 'forget' the login/password of the first student so that the second student can then login with their unique password?
Otherwise, there will be 75 students all surfing the 'net under my identity.
    Thanks for the help.

  • Macs forget wireless login password

I installed a Time Capsule last night for some friends. They have an iMac, 3 Macbooks, and a Canon wireless printer. They previously had an old Netgear router, so I pulled the Netgear and gave the Time Capsule the same SSID and WPA password. Everything seemed to work, their computers could back up, and even the printer worked. I was proud that I'd replaced their router without having to do anything to any of their other hardware.
Today, I got a frantic call saying that the network was down. Their DSL modem was alive, and the light on the Time Machine was green, but they had no wireless connection on 2 of their computers (the other two weren't home). They could see their network in the Airport drop-down menu, but when they tried to select it, they'd get "Connection timed out."
I suggested that they unplug the Time Capsule and let it reboot. After it came up, their Macs stil didn't connect automatically. However, if they clicked on their network, they were prompted for their network password, and they could successfully connect.
They've been using their old Netgear router for a couple of years without this problem. I don't think that the Canon printer had a problem reconnecting (at least they didn't mention it). They're still running Leopard. One of the two machines is fully patched, and the other isn't, but I did install the latest Airport update on it when I connected it to the Time Capsule yesterday.
This one has me scratching my head. I have an Airport Extreme myself, and have never had a problem with it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

so I pulled the Netgear and gave the Time Capsule the same SSID and WPA password.
This is likely confusing the computers as they already had this information stored to connect to the Netgear router. When the computers tried to connect, they were looking for the Netgear network which was no longer there.
Suggest that you change the SSID at least, to setup new connections on the Macs, not in conflict with other older settings.
You'll also need to set the new SSID as the first connection that each Mac will look for first when searching for a wireless network. Post back if you are not sure on how to do this.

  • OS 10.6.8 forgets wireless keyboard but don't Magic Mouse

Everytime I reboot Wireless keyboard (2007) disappears on Bluetooth preference pane. However MagicMouse is always connected.
Any idea about why I have to sync my keyboard everytime I boot?
    Thanks in advance.-

    Hello:
Direct answer to your question - no.
    However, try this:
    Reset the PRAM and SMC.

  • OS X 10.5.5 always forgets Wireless network after bootcamp reboot

I have my network preferences set to "remember network", but every time I reboot from bootcamp to go back to "Mac Mode", I have to re-enter my SSID, security type and passphrase.
The wireless router does not broadcast the SSID. Is that why network restart says it's not there? Since it supposedly "remembered" my preferred network, why doesn't it just try to connect anyway? When I reboot to Windows mode, I have no such problem, it's only returning to Mac OS X.
It's a PITA, and then I always have to adjust my system time because it's off by the UTC-offset amount.

After reading some other threads, I removed "System Preferences" from the dock and now it works!
I read that some other people moved System Preferences from Applications to Utilities, and undoing that solved the problem. I did not move System Preferences, but I did not put it on the dock. Removing it from the dock seems to have solved it. Go figure.
Now, problem number two... the time doesn't get set properly until I select "Open Date & Time..." then it corrects, just by opening that.. I don't have to do anything else.

  • Yosemite has killed wireless printing

I updated my wife’s MacBook Air, 13”, Mid 2012 to Yosemite last evening and now it will not print on our local network. I have tried a few things I found here in the forums to no avail.
Neither an HP Officejet Pro 8100 nor a Samsung ML-2010 lazer will work on the network but work fine on my iMac via USB.
Curiously, when I open the Printers & Scanners pref and click on + I get this: HP Officejet Pro 8100 @ Tom Gould’s iMac Intel i5 (2).
Do not recall ever seeing the (2) before. See pics.
When I go to /Library/Printers, there are no files there.
I am stumped. Sounds Like I have to start fresh, but I don’t know what that is.
    Can someone help?

I have tried diligently to make the printers work on my wife’s MBA.
I deleted all files and re-installed the latest printer software.
I was finally able to get the printers re-installed, by manually entering the IPA.
However, and this may be a clue, with no printers installed, when I clicked on the + to add one, I selected the HP printer. A small window opened with a thermometer, saying it was installing the printer.
Then it stopped and an Alert appeared:
“The software for the printer is currently unavailable. Please contact the printers’ manufacturer for the latest software.”
    Hmmmmmm.

  • Force specific 802.11 wireless mode?

I am trying to force an 802.11a connection to an SSID that supports a/b/g. It seems like I ought to be able to force a specific 802.11 mode with ifconfig, but I have not been able to determine how.
    Any ideas?
    I tried
    #>ifconfig en1 mode 11a
    did not work
    Thanks

    Thanks for the replies.
In this particular case, restricting the SSID to a is not an option, b/g on the client side is far more common and I need to leave that available for maximum compatibility.
There needs to be an option to force a over b/g. Failing that, I think the adapter should default to a over g, as the 5Ghz spectrum is a lot less crowded.

  • How to force SMS in Yosemite?

How can you force Yosemite to send a SMS message instead of an iMessage? Especially since I have some of my contacts, that don't have data, switch between sending iMessages and SMS messages. I know I can do that with my phone by touching and holding the message till the option appears and I was wondering if there was something similar for Yosemite.

    Hi,
    No.
Messages still thinks it is an iMessages. It is the paring with the iPhone that makes it an SMS message.

    Hello,
Looks like I have a memory leak somewhere.  I'm unable to pin it down.  My kernel_task is taking too much memory and it force yosemite to kill window manager, not a good thing
Can you help me out?  I'm really considering a roll back to maverick, but before doing this maybe there's hope to fix this for good..
I also removed cleanmymac as I was requested in other thread of people having same issue.

Hello greg, I uninstalled cleanmymac and forticlient( even if I need it).   Nosleep is very useful to prevent my mac to drop all my rdp connections.  Here's a new etrecheck output to confirm my clean up:

  • Wireless trackpad: misses clicks, tracks poorly right to left

Using Yosemite, iMac 5K, wireless keyboard and magic trackpad
The trackpad sometimes misses a click and sometimes doubles the click. I know that the "click" is registered by the little buttons on the bottom of the trackpad. It is on a tidy hard surface and I know the buttons are getting moved. It feels like maybe it misses if I hold the button down longer than it wants me to. But then sometimes it just plain doesn't respond. (Yes, the battery is still good, showing 81% but this phenomenon has been happening since the pad and batteries were new.) Oh, I see more now while I'm typing. If the cursor shows as a little pointy arrow, the click doesn't register. If it shows as a double-ended vertical input cursor, it does register. This perhaps means that even though the pointer has actually moved, the computer hasn't seen it.
But then sometimes one click registers as two. For example, I try to position the mouse and end up with a word (or, worse, the name of a file in the finder) selected instead. I have changed settings in accessibility to make the double click speed slightly slower, which I think might have improved the behavior a bit. On the other hand, with the previously mentioned issue when the click doesn't seem to register. When I then do another click to make it actually see the move, that is when a double or triple click will happen. This is for moves of multiple inches with more than a split second in between.
I also find that the trackpad doesn't register movement reliably especially when I am trying to move it by pushing right to left across the pad. I can position it so that multiple light strokes on the pad don't move the cursor at all. Again, this happens when the cursor is not "expecting" typing. For example, in this support communities entry box with the arrow showing instead of the vertical input thingie.
It isn't really predictable when the problem is going to appear. As you can imagine, this makes "mouse ahead" input pretty dangerous - renaming files, deleting bodies of text with the Undo not being available anymore because of going too fast.
I already returned one of these trackpads as defective. Now I'm thinking that this is actually just the design behavior of the thing. Perhaps a pad from some other mfgr would work more reliably?
[p.s. I wish if it is going to show me the time of last autosave that it would use the local system display time, not the current time in California.]

I hope they can fix it. When my macbook came back from apple after having another issue fixed, the button was pivoting around the middle, meaning you could only click in the middle, not the edge. Too it back, they replaced the top case and it came back with the same problem. It now in again having the top case replaced again.
They're now telling me that it's "normal". It wasn't like that when I bought it!

  • HP LaserJet P1102w - Flashing Wireless Light

My printer kept changing IP addresses thus I kept having to add a new printer to my wireless laptop. I wanted to stop this, so I went to the web interface of the printer (looked up the IP address of the printer it was finding on the network and typed that in my browser). I then went to the page that listed the IP configuration and switched it from automatic ip to manual ip and under manual ip address, typed in the ip address I wanted it to be (which was showing under my already installed printer but listed as offline). Once I did this, I could no longer see the printer on my network. The wireless light is flashing blue and I have no idea how to get back into the interface to change it back to automatic ip (I tried typing in the ip address I changed it to, but that didn't work). I went through the hp wireless configuration wizard that was installed on the computer the printer is usb connected to, and it sees my network, but at the end, it says "the printer was able to successfully connect to the wireless networking using the wireless credentials, but this computer is unable to communicate with the printer". I went into my router's (Motorola) web browser to see if I could see it under the DHCP section, but those ip addresses listed didn't bring up an hp web interface

Wireless light flashing, you are not connected to your routers SSID.  Reset the printer back to Factory Defaults and try again.  But try the following.
    1. Set a static IP in the printer (click here) outside the DHCP range of the router (check your manual).
This is for Linksys routers but can be used for all routers. Verify your DHCP range and change this
first if needed. More Wireless Printing help is here.
    2. Verify in the printer that 'Auto Off' is disabled.  Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) by going to the
printers IP address in your browsers address bar, click Settings Tab/Auto Off. Or use the Printer
       Assistant, Printer Home Page (EWS).
    3. If the printer supports and has IPv6 enabled, turn off IPv6 in the printer.
In the router: (Refer to your router manual for information)
    5. Use a fixed wireless channel like 1, 6 or 11, never 'auto', try channel 1 first then the rest.
    6. Set router to 20Mhz only, or 145Mbps depending on router.
    7. Always use WPA2-AES (Personal) encryption, but you can try ‘mixed’ mode.
    8. Disable WPS and never use it and disable UPnP for the routers security. Nobody can hack your
system now and helps with wireless connectivity (if you want to know why, search the web).
    9. If you have a dual band router (2.4Ghz and 5.0Ghz bands), make sure the SSID’s are NOT the same,
they must be different for all bands, even for any Guest networks.
    10. SSID broadcast must be enabled.
    11. Save all settings. Power off both, wait 2 mins.  Power on router wait 2 mins.
    12. Power on printer and verify it reconnects to router.
Say thanks by clicking the Kudos Thumbs Up to the right in the post.
