Forced Full Duplex changes to Half Duplex (no mismatch errors)

Guys,
I am going through a very weird situation and wondered if any of you had any ideas on how I could troubleshoot this issue.
I am running a 2960 Cisco, which has a single mode fiber cable which is connected to multiple rstp switches designed by a mining technology company.
The fiber port which connects these switches has "duplex full" written into its configuration.  However, after a random amount of time, anywhere from 1 hour to 24 hours, the port is changes to operate in half duplex.  This is found by doing a show interfaces status.
At no time whatsoever is there any duplex mismatch errors.
Once i notice that the port is actually operating in half duplex mode, i log into the port, do a "duplex half"  then "duplex full".. the port goes back into full duplex for another 1-24 hour period.
Any ideas on why this port keeps jumping into half duplex operation?   I really need this port to run in full duplex and cannot understand why the port would go into half duplex operation when the end devices should support full duplex.
Again, i never get any duplex mismatch errors.
I appreciate any troubleshooting tips you can provide.

  • Half duplex on router

    Hi,
I am currntly working on a POC at the customer site and noticed that then WAN egde router has an ethernet 10BasT connection to the WAAS applaince (inline interception). The 10Base T connection is on half duplex and hence the WAAS appliance has negotiated accordingly. From the documentation this may impact the performace of the WAAS solution. I have checked the router and noticed the ethernet interface can not be set to full duplex so do I force the inline interfaces to half duplex or according to the documentaion ensure that the same duplex mode from Client to server ( which may be impossible coz customer may not want to make such changes thru out network)
    Thanks

    Hi Obiora!
Sounds like the router is going to be a bottleneck in your POC. The fact that the connection is 10baseT is bad enough but the half duplex is a deal killer.
What model router are you using for this POC?
You really want at least an ISR series (1800, 2800, 3800) model. The older models are supported but you need to tell the customer that this is not ideal. Additionally, this should be done on lab equipment and not production.
The reason for this was once explained in this forum by I believe Zach Seils:
"The biggest performance hit on legacy routers is not the WCCP process itself, but rather the increased levels of throughput that are generated from the WAE. Due to the compression technologies in WAAS, a T1 worth of compressed traffic can decode into tens or hundreds of Mbps of output. Older routers can't sustain these throughput rates."
You might want to find another router in order to demonstrate the full functionality of the WAAS appliance.
    Hope this helps.
(My apologies if I attributed the quote to the wrong person. From my experience the legacy equipment does not contribute to a very persuasive POC.)

  • Access Points report half duplex in CDP Neighbors

    Hi
We are currently converting our AP's to light AP's - using a 5508 controller. I just noticed that when I check an AP, under Access Point Details, CDP Neighbors, it correctly reports the switch it's connected to, with the right port. But under "Duplex" it says Half Duplex?
It seems to do this for all AP's. I have checked both an 1121, 1131 and 1141. When I check the connected port on the switch it says Full Duplex.
Is this a display issue or something I should examine further?
    Regards,
    Kaj

Leo is correct. There is a bug that causes this. It will also eventually cause the controller to lock up. On a 2106 this happens much more often due to the lower amount of memory and processor power. TAC suggests that you hard code the switch to 100 meg full but I have seen that his has no real effect.

  • NIC Settings: Changing between half and full-duplex

issues connecting to a wireless router..
keep getting 169 (self assigned ip)
the last suggestion i got was to check that the nic was set to 10/100 half-duplex.
i have no idea how to check it or change it.
please.. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
What brand and model of wireless router are you trying to use?

  • Unable to use Auto setting or 100BaseTx in either full or half duplex!

Hi here is the issue, I have a small home network of three desktops, one laptop (wireless) and two game consoles with a WRTP54G router and cable modem. I have noticed that if I try to change the NIC setting on any device to either Auto or 100BaseTx in either full or half duplex the connection drops. The pc will say network unplugged, the minute I change it back to10BaseT in either full or half duplex it comes right back up! Before anyone asks yes my NIC's are 100BaseTx compatable. I have made sure all drivers are up to date. Has anyone had this issue? I would like to use 100Base Tx in Full Duplex! Any help would be appreciated!

hi. the auto sense feature of the router is not working anymore. i dont know if a firmware upgrade will help, but you can give it a shot.

  • 3Com elxl in Solaris 10: Force full duplex?

After being up for a few hours, my Solaris 10 (11/06 release, patched up to date), appears to virtually stop functioning network-wise; throughput goes to single-digits/second. I'm guessing this is a duplex mis-match, but editing /kernel/drv/elxl.conf to force full-duplex kills the NIC altogether, generating a stream of errors.
Searching this forum shows discussions of stuff like this going back to Solaris 8, but most threads are inconclusive.
    Anyone have a final conclusion?

    But when I want
a static ip by putting the ip in hostname.bcme0 it
gives me this in bootup(pasted only the interesting
bits):As the filename hostname.bcme0 already suggests you don't enter an IP adress there but a hostname. The IP adres is then picked up by checking the hostname against /etc/inet/hosts.
You might want to check out http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/816-4554/816-4554#hic for more information on this matter.

  • Half duplex or full duplex configuration for MDS9124 management port?

    Hi All,
Is it possible to set the management port of mds 9124 about half or full duplex configuration?
I want to correct following error:
Jun 13 10:27:20.799 GMT: %CDP-4-DUPLEX_MISMATCH: duplex mismatch discovered on GigabitEthernet4/18 (not half duplex), with mtw1pc02bs0(FOX1450G8QG) mgmt0 (half duplex).
it seems mds 9124 set his port to half duplex.
    Dennis

You may want to check this thread :
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/thread/2059109
    Else try the following :
    switch# config terminal
    switch(config)#
    switch(config)# interface mgmt0
    switch(config-if)# switchport duplex full
    switch(config)# exit
    switch#
    switch# copy running-config startup-config
Also, I would suggest you check what the counterpart of your MDS switch mgmt interface is set to (i.e. is it set to autoneg, then try setting it to fix speed/duplex or the other way around).

  • NIC only works at 10 Mbps/Half Duplex

Ever since I got this MOBO (almost 1 year ago), I have not been able to connect faster than 10 Mbps/Half Duplex with my ADSL modem. Any attempt to change speed will result in Windows indicating tha the cable is unpluged (Auto mode does not work either). I've updated BIOS, NIC drivers, I've installed WinXP (and re-installed) with and without SP1 and SP2. I've also changed cables with no luck.
I got an external NIC from a friend and could connect at 100 Mbps/Full Duplex so the problem is NOT on the modem side.
System info shows the internal NIC shares IRQ 18 with a USB controller wich I uninstalled just to see if it would make a difference. Same results.
I've just installed the latest drivers from INTEL and I'm still getting the same problem.
    Any ideas?
    Help will be greatly appreciated.
    Abraham

Don't know how to fix this but I had the same problem when I was connected directly to my cable modem. I eventually got it to run manually at 10Mbs-full duplex and didn't worry about it further since that's faster than actual transfer speeds from my ISP anyway.
I then configured a wireless network using a Linksys router and noticed that my NIC now automatically connects at 100Mbs-full dupex as it should.
If you feel this limiting your actual transfer speeds(it wasn't in my case) you might consider purchasing an inexpensive router. This will also give you the benefit of having a hardware firewall.

  • GLC-SX-MM auto detecting as half duplex

    I have a 3945 router with a GLC-SX-MM connected to a Canoga 9145 with a 5 meter patch cable going to AT&T as a 100Mb Metro-E
Our performance is poor measuring about 4Mb up and 15Mb down. I have tried various test sites.
A show interface is showing: Half Duplex, 1Gbps, media type is SX
We are seeing a lot of output errors and TCP reassembly queue overflows
If I force the interface to full duplex I stop getting output errors and queue overflows but start getting interface resets. My performance also goes sub 1Mb
The ISP confirms their interface on the Canoga is properly configured. We have also replaced the patch cable.
Does anyone have any thoughts on possible causes?
    Gary
    http://bytesolutions.com

You're using a 1 Gbps interface and your SP is provisioning a 100 Mbps circuit? That doesn't make sense. Depending on your equipment, you should be using something like the GLC-FE-100FX=, a 100 Mbps SFP. (See http://www.cisco.com/en/US/customer/products/hw/modules/ps5455/products_device_support_tables_list.html )
Otherwise where is the buffering and queuing take place - in the Canoga? From its application guide, I believe it is intended to be used with the fiber on the provider side and the subscriber side is copper. Your post seems to describe the reverse setup.

  • Half Duplex/100M problem on 2960 switch with GLC-GE-100FX

We have a 2960-24TC switch with GLC-GE-100FX SFP interface converter. We connected the switch to another switch through fiber, one end was GLC-GE-100FX and the other end was a 100/FULL ATI media converter. Both switches could talk to each other. The problem was the GLC-GE-100FX interface running at 100M/half duplex status and we couldn't change the port configuration. Is there a way to fix this problem? Your help would be much appreciated.

Using show interface command. It shows half duplex. It's a new design on Cisco 2960-24TC switches, the Giga uplink ports are dual purposed. When I plugged GLC-GE-100FX SFP interface converter and connected it to a media converter, it showed half duplex. There's no way I could change the speed and duplex under that configuration.

  • 10 Mb's half duplex on 1840

Router is a Cisco 1840 Series.  Our ISP controls the router,  The router is set to 10 Mb's half duplex.  Is this a common thing for the routers to come from the ISP's configured like this?  If so, is there some reason why they do this?  The half duplex setting really puzzles me.  Why wouldn't it be set at full duplex?
I'm wondering if the reasoning is, well it collapses down to a T1 which is running at 1.5 Mb's, so 10 Mb's is fast enough, why run at 100 Mb's.

    Hi,
Because half duplex will work in just about all situations. If it's set to full duplex and the other device is a hub or a device that doesn't support full duplex then you'd have no connectivity.
So can set full duplex with 100 Mbps at both the end side in coordination with your ISP.

I am having trouble with a Inter-Tel VoIP product. It seems I can't get the phones out of half-duplex mode. Anybody have any thoughts?
