Forced quit Finder,, Now everythings gone!!!

I forced quit the finder when i got the spinning rainbow wheel, and it reset evrything to as if I had nothing on the computer at all, all my home documents are gone, all my itunes music, photos as if I were a brand new user of the computer. How do i get it back to the ways it was before i did this and restore my files and programs back?
Please help!

Did you check in your Users folder to see if the directory is there? Did you attempt to rename your Home folder?

  • Force quit Finder - now Finder won't restart!

    Hi there,
Last night I was converting a bunch of video files in Quicktime and copying them to a samba server on the LAN (so I could play them on my Linux-based media machine) when the Finder stopped responding and I got the spinning beachball of death.
The beachball appeared when I clicked on one of the files in Finder and it tried to generate a preview in column-view. The media files were fairly big ones (1 gig) and .mkv format (which seem particularly processor-intensive to decode) and I'm pretty sure the file in question was on the Samba server.
So all in all everything seemed to be against the Finder creating this preview and I figured it was going to take a long time to do so, so I'd just force-relaunch the Finder and go back and open the folder in a different view in order to copy it wherever it needed to be.
After doing so, though, Finder fails to restart - I've got no icons on my desktop and I can't navigate to a folder of files to click on the one I want to view.
Often in the past when I've experienced this, typing `open /path/to/folder` in terminal has had the effect of forcing Finder to restart, however on this occasion I get this error message "2008-05-23 18:11:07.383 open[7567] LSOpenFromURLSpec() returned -600 for application (null) urls file://localhost/Applications/."
If I look for the process using `ps` I see the process name in brackets:
$ ps -wwwwwx | grep Finder
    5958 ?? E 0:00.00 (Finder)
    $
Apparently the "E" in the above line indicates that the process is trying to exit. I can't get any further using `kill -9 5958` or anything else I've tried so far.
The Finder icon is still showing in the Dock and if I right-click on it I see "Application not responding" (greyed out), "Hide" and "Relaunch". Choosing "Relaunch" has no effect. Finder does not seem to appear in Activity Monitor (showing "All Processes") . If I open the "Force Quit Applications" dialogue again the Finder is still shown and highlighting it changes the button from "Force Quit" to "Relaunch", but clicking that has no effect (except that Finder disappears from the lit of programs; it reappears if I close the "Force Quit" window and reopen it from the Apple menu).
*+Obviously I could sort this by rebooting my computer, but I really don't want to do that right now.+* Can anyone suggest a way of properly killing this process so that Finder can restart?
Many thanks in advance for any suggestions,
    Stroller.

Sometimes after Force quitting it a few times, it'll work... about 5% of the time.
Thanks - I'll give that a few more goes. Not that I haven't already!!
Might try to open Activity Monitor to see what else is hung, my guess is System UIServer or Window Server.
How would they show as hung?
WindowServer shows 1% - 2% activity, and the real & virtual memory values are updated every second or so, so I assume that's fine.
I was about to say that SystemUIServer does indeed show no activity, but it just blipped up to 0.2%.
I'm not familiar with SystemUIServer, but if I recall correctly killing or restarting WindowServer will close all my active windows, which is exactly what I'd like to avoid (I might as well reboot the machine as do that).
    $ ps -wwwwwvvxa | grep -e WindowServer -e SystemUI

Furthermore, I think your HD/OS needs some maintenance.
I wouldn't debate that - I installed OS 10.4 on this machine when 10.4 was released, IIRC, so it's well overdue for a reinstall. I want to upgrade this system to 10.5, but have a load of procrastinating to do first.
But I would debate your evidence for saying it - doesn't everyone have a hung Finder occasionally? I don't think I've ever had a Mac which I didn't sometimes have to reboot. I would guess I've had pretty much this problem half a dozen times since this G5 was new - I reboot it and everything works fine and I forget about it. No worries. But right now that's not terribly convenient.
Typically I sleep my Macs when not in use, and `uptime` typically shows a month or two. But I do believe that Macs are prone to "inexplicable grouchiness" in this condition.

Those are just shortcuts to open the application. Go to your Applications folder and open Mail from there. You can drag the Mail application from the applications folder back down to your dock.

  • After force quitting iTunes, now my phone is "in use" by another user

OK, here's what just happened to me tonight. I had the "beach ball of death" in iTunes, so I used a force quit. Now when I plug in my week old iPhone 4, I'm getting the message that this phone is already in use by another user on this computer. Huh?!? For one thing, I am the ONLY user although I do have a "guest" account, but I'm logged in on my regular account.
I've tried restarting iTunes, same message. Every time I plug in the phone it's doing it now. So, how am I supposed to sync my phone now?
Has anyone else had this problem after force quitting iTunes? Any ideas?

Nope, tried that, didn't work. 3 complete reboots didn't worked either. However, on the 4th complete computer reboot, it worked!! I don't know why, but I'm happy that I can sync again.
I guess it just reinforces the old, "if at first you don't succeed...."

  • Is it OK to force quit finder?

Is it OK to force quit finder.  I cannot turn off my computer because finder is running empty trash, and has been for over 30 hours.

    Hey jamesfromlakeway,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you want to know if you can Force Quit the Finder.
OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3411
If the Finder is unresponsive, use Force Quit to relaunch it. Select Finder in the Force Quit Window or Dock, then click Relaunch.
    Have a nice day,

I updated my ipod touch, now everythings gone. Why & is there a way to get everything back without having to pay the hundreds of dollars i did?

If for some reason you failed to transfer any purchases to your computer before updating and you failed to make sure that everything was on your computer, then you can redownload some itunes purcahsed content:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

I have an iMac G5 stuck on the gray screen with spinning gear.  I woke up to it being stuck on a blue screen, then force quit and now it's stuck on gray with spinning gear.  Please advise.

If you have a G5 then it's a PPC (Power PC) based iMac, this is an Intel iMac forum. Try the Gray screen appears during startup link for troubleshooting steps. I suspect the HD has crashed.

The computer (top / back of monitor) gets really hot within minutes.

    How old is the iMac?
With no backup, you have probably lost all your data.
Sounds like serious hardware problem for which you are going to have to take it to Apple for an estimate of repairs.

  • I imported vacation photos, got the color wheel and did a force quit. Now I can't find any of those photos, and of course I deleted them from the SD card when I imported them. Where can I find those photos?

I imported vacation photos from my cameras SD card and deleted them when the import was complete. Then I moved them from Events into an Album. When trying to move 2 photos as once to another album I got the color wheel and locked up. I did a force quit but when I go back into iPhoto none of the recently imported photos appear - not in Events, the album, trash, etc. Where can I find those photos?

backup the iPhoto Library and launch iPhoto while depressing and holding the option and command keys until the first aid window appears - rebid your iPhoto library

  • Force quite & restart - now lost mail, ICal,Iphoto, bookmarks

    Hi,
Hoping someone can help me - an amateur but keen to learn Mac user.
Did a force quite on mail and then shutdown Mac (may have also logged out - not exactly sure though).
Computer powered up and it is as if I am using it for the 1st time - Mail blank(asking for new account info), Ical data gone, Iphoto data gone , firefox bookmarks gone.
After much panic, did a bit of searching and found the following:
1/System log shows that at time of 'force quit/shutdown' >> Setting hostname to 'my-name-computer.local'
2/ Managed to find my files under :Home file/my name/public/library/mail or calanders etc....where as currently it is pulling or storing data from :Home File /my name/library/mail or calanders etc.....
I suspect I have changed some setting and the public file has something to do with it but not sure what or how to fix it so I can restore everything back to normal.
Any ideas would be really appreciated.
    Thanks
    AJ

The symptoms you describe to appear to pertain to the original user
account having a significant flaw or corruption; so the result bears
out the idea since you are prompted to enter information as though
you had never used those items before.
Since the issue appears to be a damaged Directory, where the user
account is still there but not being seen correctly due to shutdown or
other corruption errors, one of the tools that may help restore the Mac
could be the use of *Disk Warrior*; it can built a new directory or fix one.
The booted Disk Utility in your OS X install disc won't fix a Directory.
So, that is something worth checking into further: using Disk Warrior.
Outside of that, there are other causes or initial paths to a similar failure
of the directory; some are caused by attempts to 'archive & install' and
not save the user's existing folder info over into the new system. In that
case, the info would be in the 'previous system' but not the new one.
I'm not sure (now) how to 'Recover Your Mac OS X Home Folder' &
or restore it; I've read of some who did that in more than one way, to
include moving the user info bits into another account given Admin
access, then after, delete the defective account entirely. You should
not have to do that level; and it involves more than I dare mention...
because, although I did read about it, I have promptly forgotten!
I'm glad they've named this area "Discussions."
    You may have to read up on a few topic areas that probably overlap;
one of them covers the general topic of recovering a (lost?) home folder.
This first one covers several topics and before going into it as though it
were really the correct answer, presume it is not. You are asked to use
the "root" user in do some tasks, straight-on; but later in the article, is
a less invasive thing to check into (read more about, search for, etc) in
the last section: Recover a user’s account or files.
{The main problem may be, that the items you may want to save into a
    new replacement Admin user account, could be damaged or really lost.}

    • Mac OS X: How to recover a home folder (directory)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2258
In the immediate above article, the action to create a new/replacement
user account named the same as the failed one, and a general way to
reclaim the old similar-named user preferences and info, is outlined.
    • Recovering Lost Users - Mac OS X Tips
    http://www.macosxtips.co.uk/index_files/recovering-lost-users.html
This page tells of two main ways the user account appears missing
and some methodology of how to restore some sense of it again.
If you had a pre-problem clone of your entire computer's contents,
the easy answer would be to re-clone the incredible backup to the
Mac after wiping the computer's drive completely. Or try Disk Warrior.
Hopefully some of this makes sense.
Some days, nothing does to me.
    Good luck & happy computing!

I'm running the latest version of iMovie on the latest version of Mavericks with a mid-2010 MBP.  Any ideas regarding what the problem might be and how I can get iMovie running again?

After a couple of days it finally decided to open. Previously it was showing that it was open in the Dock, but no window would appear, the message I posted would show up in the Console, and I'd have to Force Quit.  Hopefully I don't run into any more hitches. Thanks for your response.

  • Force Quit iWeb now website cannot be found in browser

I force quit iWeb after it taking 10 minutes to publish a photo page. I was playing around with slide shows and dragged and dropped an event onto the page. The event actually had a video clip along with the other pictures and I have a feeling this large file is what was taking so long to publish. I relaunched iWeb and published and now the site cannot be found. What have I done??? :o(

have you tried republishing? also check to see if your logged in to your idisk/mobileme idisk with the account that you want to publish with, to check go to system preferences>mobile me, then sign in.

  • Desktop - files not showing - have to force quit finder

One little thing that annoys me about using the Mac is that files don't always show up on the desktop when an application, for example wiretap saves an audio file. I've also noticed they don't always show up on the desktop automatically when transfering a file to the desktop of another mac. The only way i've found to solve this is to force quit the finder, when they show themselves at last.
This seems a bit of a glitch in the perfection of OS X to me. Is it a recognised fault because it's a bit annoying to have to force quit the finder to use the files. I'm using 10.4.8. Thanks.

    Hi Jerry,
I haven't let the ball spin for longer than 5 minutes so i'll let it run for longer and see if anything happens. I've tried both starting pages and opening a document independently and both cause it to freeze. This isn't happening with any other application.
