Forced SafeSleep (Hibernate in windows world)

Dear all, I am new to Mac, and I have just invested on a MBP 2.0GHz with 2GB RAM, hoping this will replace my aged Windows based computer.
What I discovered with MBP is that there is no such things as hibernate, only sleep. As I only use the MBP during the night, and i would like it to sleep but without draining any battery at all. I understand that in sleep mode, MBP drains the battery slightly, but if i don't use it daily, then after a few days, the battery could have drained a lot ...
Can someone please help me with this problem ?
Thanks

There's a much simpler way to activate Safe Sleep / Deep Sleep. It's a Dashboard widget call Deep Sleep that you can download from Apple's 3rd-party software distribution site:

  • Import of MPEG2 Files out of Windows world??

    Hello everybody,
I'm brand new to the forum and I'm a switcher from the windows world. As I have a lot of experience on the windows world with video-edititng I was surprised how complicated and time consuming it is with the standard tools. Therefore I'm thinking of a different maybe easier solution. Final Cut express HD.
My question might be easy but for me essential:
Is it possible to import a windows mpeg2 file into final cut express hd without converting it to a dv file and how fast will the import be because in Imovie the import of a 2 hr movie takes 1 hrs to convert plus 10 hrs to import it to imove and now I'm doing the export to QT MG4 which takes about 1500 min.
Any information and help as well as hints are welcome.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    H Tom,
as you might see I'm brand new - what would FCE mean is it the format of the hard drive? I guess so. Whould this resume with the problem that I'm not able to write anything to my windows harddrives?
My problem so far and still is that it takes hours to import a movie which is 3 hrs long (only 1000 mins) and it is currently locking 60 % off my harddrive. The settings so far are only to convert to a DV (PAL) which is acceptable fast and then import to Imovie or FC express ?

    Hi,
according to the official documentation of Microsoft, Hyper-V does not block Sleep and Hibernate on Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2.

    personally... I'd just...
That's what I'm zeroing in on. I'm sure that whatever you and Mark do in your environments makes perfect sense in those environments. But, those are two environments out of millions. For my "personally", I'd like to do whatever I can to prevent these forums
from becoming a place where someone doing things differently is intimidated out of posting further, by telling them things like "that's not what you want" without really knowing what it is they want. I know of at least one popular tech forum like that, and
it's now dominated by halfmins who are revered for their post count, not because they know anything. I'm not trying to say that's what either of you are trying to do or that you're not both perfectly capable experts. It's just that there are certain behaviors
I think we should all rise above on these forums.
I maintain that the real issue here is that, as the OP points it, it's advertised to work, therefore it should work. Workarounds and alternate solutions are nice, and I don't think anyone is complaining about them just being presented, but ultimately they're
    not the point.
I understand your position about just shutting it down and I'm sure that's valid in the situations you encounter. What happens to me is that I'm hammering on some code for CoreFig in my Win7 box while testing on a Hyper-V Server in the background. The phone
rings, I get distracted, and six days later, I still have a Hyper-V Server running full-bore that I'm doing absolutely nothing with. It has to be on a physical machine because I can load Hyper-V Server in a VM, but I can't put active VMs on it. It has to be
on Hyper-V Server and not Client Hyper-V because A) it's meant for Server and uses features only found on Server and B) I tell end users that it was tested on Server and being truthful is sort of my thing. So, I think I have a valid use case for sleep. I have
to assume there are any number of others out there.

    Please Help me
    Thanks

    Hi,
you cannot use hibernation if booting from VHD also you will need hardware that support the required standards (modern hardware does) and have up-to-date drivers
you could force hibernation to on by setting key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentCongtrolSet\Control\Power\HibernateEnabled to 1

  • CoExistence in a Windows World - OSX SL Not Seeing Windows Network

This will be a challenging post, I suspect.
OSX Snow Leopard 10.6.3: Finder is unable to see the windows network to which it is attached. Conversely, the windows network sees my iMAC and it's little sister (my wife's Mac Book Pro) just fine and dandy.
The Windows workstations have no trouble connecting to the MACs, and the MACs have no problem connecting to the PCs (SMB://ipaddress or machine name)
So why then can I simply not use Finder>Go>Network and see all the PCs and MACs on my network? Applecare couldn't help with this either, except to recommend a reinstall of OSX. Seems silly, because the iMAC is three days old, so nothing has been added! (Yet...)
    Here's the setup:
Home Network, all rooms homerun with cat5e wired to structured media closet in basement housing nice cisco gig-e switch uplinked to Motorola Router to cable provider.
5 Windows PCs + Server (3 kids w/win7, Laptop w/win7, server w/linux, and Mediahub) and 2 new MACs.
Both MACs have same problem, can't see windows network, but can attach to shares and can be browsed from PCs Network (Neighborhood).
MACs - Firewall off, Shares On (File, Screen, DVD), DHCP Leases from Server, WINS and DNS entries correct, Workgroup Membership correct)
    Me... STUMPED...

Is this helpful: Set Up Your Home Network, Windows 7 Edition - PC World? The following is for Leopard, but you may find it applies reasonably well to SL:
Simple guide to Leopard/Windows Home Networking
Written by Intercepter121 and originally posted on the Apple Discussions here.
If your network complies to the minimum requirements described below you should be able to share resources without any need to enter commands in the terminal to modify configuration files in your mac.
    Requirements
    1. A decent router
    2. Mac Os x 10.5.1 installed on your macs
    3. Windows XP or Vista
    4. Number of network devices <10
    5. Some network printers or drives (NAS)
    6. A decent ISP offering a good DNS service
    General Settings
If your router offers DHCP and any of the device has power saving features there is a risk that the IP addresses are renewed. This can be problematic as the devices keep changing IP addresses. As this is your network is strongly recommended to reserve IP addresses to the MAC (Machine Address Code) of the various devices so that they can power on and off and still keep the same IP.This simple suggestion will greatly improve the browsing of the local network.
Accessing Windows Resources from Leopard with no authentication
    Windows
    1. Check the settings of the PC and ensure the IP addresses on the local LAN are trusted
    2. Activate sharing on the desired devices ensuring the shares are read and write. If you use Vista ensure password protected sharing is disabled.
    3. Try to access the windows share from another windows computer if available to confirm no authentication is required
    MAC
    1. Go into system preferences->security-Firewall check that the setting is not on allow only essential services. Recommended settings is allow access to specific
    2. Go back into system preferences network. On the tab location click edit locations. Duplicate Automatic and call the new location Home. Now select the Home location and go into Advanced-WINS. In the workgroup field enter the same value that is on the other windows computers for example HOME. Now press enter then go back to the main screen. Select Edit locations and delete the location automatic. Now edit your location Home and rename it Automatic. This workaround is a leopard bug described here.
    3. Give 5 minutes to allow all the other machines to broadcast their IP address and the other computers should appear on the left side of your finder window. You can now select the shares you want to connect. As no authentication is active if you are prompted with a user name just press OK.
The procedure to access a NAS is the same as above, just ensure permissions are set to files are read/write for anyone to avoid confusion.
NOTE: There is no need to activate SMB sharing if you don't want to allow the PC to read folders on your MAC
    Troubleshooting
After you have followed all the steps you don't see any windows PC.
Identify the IP address of the machine you want to connect. In finder select Option+K and enter SMB://IPADDRESS. If you can connect you have a name resolution problem. Go into your router configuration and ensure that the option DNS assigned by ISP is selected and you don't have services like Open DNS in use and fixed IP addresses in that field. Apply the changes and reboot the router. You should start seeing windows PC in finder shortly after.
Your ISP DNS service is poor and you must use Open DNS or similar
If you are forced to use services like open dns you have the risk that the router propagates the DNS servers to your machines. As the implementation of SAMBA in Leopard effectively blocks the MAC to be a master browser for performance reasons you end in a situation in which tiger machines connect and leopard ones don't see a single share. Let's fix it.
    1. Go into System Preferences->Network then advanced DNS if you see here the IP addresses of the open dns servers this is the case. Unfortunately you will be forced to change the hosts file.
2.Ensure you have reserved IP addresses to all your machines so that they always get the same IP.
    3. Now login into your mac as administrator and go into utilities=>terminal.
    4. Issue the following command sudo pico /etc/hosts
    5. Now scroll down and enter all the IP addresses and computer names of any device you want to browse
    6. Reboot your MAC
The windows devices will now appear in finder and you will be able to connect with Option+K.
You cannot access shares even entering the IP address
You have not reserved IP addresses to each machine. Go into your router LAN set up and make sure that is the case.
    Accessing Leopard resources from Windows
    1. Go into system preferences->security-Firewall check that the setting is not on allow only essential services. Recommended settings is allow access to specific
    2. Go into System preferences->accounts and click on Guest flag the option Enable guest account to access shared folders
    3. Now into System preferences->sharing select file sharing and then options here flag SMB and select the user that has to be logged into the computer when the share has to be accessed. Ensure that the folder you want to share has read/write or whatever permissions you like it to have set for Everyone
You should now be able to see your MAC in the windows network resources and access the shared folder with a double click without any password request.
    Troubleshooting
You don't see any MACs from Windows
Check the firewall settings at the start of this post. Then go back to the Network configuration hit advanced and then TCPIP check is using DHCP and not a fixed address. Then check the sharing is set as above with SMB clicked. If SMB is not set you won't even see your mac from windows.
You see the MAC and the shared folders but you can't read or write on it
Ensure you have set the guest account to access shared folders. Then check on the sharing preferences that there is at least one folder with read permission for everyone. The classic case here is Dropbox that leopard sets as read and write for the user of the MAC but no access for other users. You try to click on drop box and receive an error but when you actually try to write a file you can do it. Check the permissions on the subfolders of the share as those permissions will prevail on the home shared folders
    FAQ
You may want to do more complicated things, but first ensure you can actually share files without security in place so you can identify the root cause of your possible problems
I want to password protect my windows shares: once you have done the relative set up in windows vista and ensured you can connect from another windows machine you will need to use user name and password of the Vista user to connect.
I want to password protect my MAC shared folders: Go into user account and disable guest access to shared folders is no shared folder has to be accessed without password otherwise leave it checked. Create a new user for sharing (better than giving away your password) so that this user only accesses the folders you want to share. In System preferences network select file sharing SMB and flag only the new user you have defined. Then go back to the folder section and set the permissions you like on the folder you want to share for this newly defined user.
    Good Luck
Last suggestion: Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "windows." There are numerous help articles. You can find the same articles at support.apple.com and searching for "windows network." Then narrow the product to Mac OS 10.6.

  • Is there a way to force applications to use window opening (and closing) animations?

I'm not a big fan of the fact that most of the time, when windows open, they don't display any sort of animation, and pretty much nothing has a closing animation.
Is there any way to force all apps to use some sort of animations, and also, is there a way to enable window closing animations?
It just kind of bothers me, probably because of that fact that I just abandoned Windows 8 for OS X.

Hack using spell checker's smart quote feature:
If the document doesn't use double quotes...
    Edit > Find/Change:
    Change all ( to "
    Change all ) to "
    Those are straight quotes.
    Edit > Spell Check:
On all instances with "string", click [Correct]
On all instances with "string, type in (string) and click [Correct].
    Edit > Find/Change:
    Change all \` to (
    Change all \' to )
Those are left and right double curly quotes.
Yes, you have to hit each instance, but it will be click-to-continue except on mismatch.

  • Howto force firefox to open windows in same place

Is there a way to force firefox to open ANY new window in a fixed spot or even on a monitor in multimonitor setups and NOT offset from the last window closed? Its anoying to have to hunt around to find where the window popped up...
Example: i have a browserwindow on the second monitor that just now sowing a fullscreen movie(or somting) and another on the main monitor.. i need a new window..ctrl+n... hmmm no window... presses ctrl+n again... still no... oh wait... minimizes movie... Hey presto there they are open on the second monitor, as it was there i closed the last browser window...and ff remember this position... AND OPEN NEW WINDOWS THERE.... argh!
    /rant off

Firefox does not have a built-in setting to open all links in a new window. Normally, you would need to hold down the Shift key when clicking the link (Shift+click) or use right-click > Open Link in New Window.
You may be able to find an add-on that adds this feature. I know there are various add-ons to open links in a ''new tab'', but I don't know about a new window.
If the problem is particular to Google search results, there is a setting in Google itself to switch the links from same window to new window. That can be found on the search preferences page:
    https://www.google.com/preferences#nwc
This preference is saved in a cookie, so if you clear cookies often, then you would need to revisit that page often.

  • Brute force on admin account - Windows Domain

    Hello,
I have seen a rise of attempts to brute force our Administrator account on a awindows domain. I have in place, a Cisco ASA5505 w/ IPS sensor. I'd like to use the IPS sensor to automatically block IP's that brute force after x failed login attempts.
Question is, is there a signature present (we auto update and are current) which will detect this and, what do we need to do to enable / configure this to kill the connection and deny further attempts.
THIS is what I need to stop: We are getting a few hundred a day.

To my knowledge there is no such signature, you need to create a custom signature to achive this.
If you have Cisco MARS; you can pull these events directly in MARS and create a regex rule for the same. Add email notification to this rule as usual to ensure alerting as desired.  Windows events can either be pulled  by MARS or can be pushed using the Snare agent.

  • Wired Dot1x and forcing machine auth on windows

I've got wired dot1x authentication working ok. the ACS server backs off to a windows domain so machine level authentication works fine. However I can't see a way of forcing windows to only ever do machine authentication. Has anyone else looked at this? I could enable the option on the ACS server to require a previous machine auth before it accepts a user auth but it can only cache this for a limited amount of time. The only way to get a machine auth is for there not to be a user logged on at the time. If we accept user auth then any user can bring their own machine onto the network but we this is what we want to stop and only allow bank standard (i.e. domain members) machines on the network.
    cheers
    Mike

Right, you need AuthMode = 2.
If onlky allowing domain memebers onto the network is the primary goal, then you may also want to consider:
    * The Machine Access Restriction feature on ACS (what you referred to before as a cache, but does help for mitigation of this threat).
    * Denying dial-in permisssions on user accounts (but this may break other things you may be using for remote access).
Example: If someone brought in there PC from home with virtually any supplicant on it, they're on the network as long as their NT credentials check out (whether machine-auth fails or not, b/c remember they can configure their own supplicant).

  • Client machine force reboot after apply window patch updated

I found all of client machines will force reboot after window patching updated via SCCM 2012. Have any options in SCCM 2012 can let users to choose reboot their machine after patching ? likely WSUS, users can suspend the reboot request. Pls advice.

The notification will happen automatically if ConfigMgr installs updates that require a reboot but a reboot is not initiated so there's nothing additional you need to do.
Note however that allowing users to choose this instead of forcing it is generally bad practice because the updates aren't truly installed until the reboot happens and there have been a couple of updates of the years that cause flakiness until the system
    is rebooted also.
Why not allow the users to install the updates when they want up until a deadline and then force the reboot at the deadline (if one hasn't already been performed)? This gives the user the control over the process but also forces it to happen if the user
    neglects performing it.

Ouch 21 crashes in a week.  These were related to your video driver (igdkmd64.sys) causing DirectX to fail.  There is a known problem with the March 2014 drivers (yours) and the July 2014 drivers.  As a first step I would remove the current
driver and revert back to a driver that is at least 6 months older at least until they release a less buggy driver.  This is one of those times when a newer driver isnt better.

  • Forcing Mathscript/Matlab figure window display position

I know in most cases I can always output the values of my mathscript/Matlab variables through the "add output and an indicator".
But in some cases I just want the output plot to be generated from Mathscript/Matlab. especially since some MATLAB plot command cannot be output in Labvies
I have attached two pic files for the block diagram and the plot figure generated. When the plot figure popped up, it is usually at the center of the screen. Is there a way to force the window to pop up say at the uppermost left corner?

  • How do I force Safari to use Windows Media Player as my default WMV player.

I am subscribed to a educational program called "the Epson Online Experience", and the entire program is in Windows Media Player videos. I was using Safari and Mac OS 10.3.9 with no problem what so ever, until Quick Time updated itself. Now I can't get WMP to play at all in Safari, or in Camino or IE either. The browsers just keep trying to play the link in Quick Time.
I did download Flip4Mac, but with no luck. The links now appear to open, appear to be downloading the buffer, but will stay on that screen for hours if I allow it.
Does anyone know how to make Windows Media Player the default media player in Safari? or for that matter, in Camino (or if I MUST, I guess I would be willing to try it in IE too if I could make it work.
    Thanks for the help!
    Jodan

Welcome to Apple Discussions. Your post seems to have been lost in a sea of Safari problems.
Usually items triggering media players create a file, which is downloaded into your system. Check your download folder for the file. If you can't find it, access the same file again via Safari.
Once you locate the file on your HD, click on it. Then, command key + I will bring up the info panel for the file (or simply select "more info" in the preview panel if you're in the finder's column mode). Go to the bottom where you'll see "open with". There, you see "quicktime" listed as the app. for opening the file. Click on the drop down menu and find the Windows player and select it.
Back to the info. panel - select "change all". This will revert all files of this type on your HD, plus future files to the Windows Media Player. Double click on the file to activate the video. Future selections in Safari will automatically open the correct media player. One other note, for the player to open automatically, you must check "open safe files after downloading" in your Safari Preferences>General panel.
    Post back with results.

  • Living in a windows world

    Ok the skinny...
Mac guy, window environment. I have gotten all networked in can see everyone share files etc...
On my windbloz machine I have internet access we do have to go through a Webmarshal application I believe.
When I hook my macbook pro up as I mentioned everything but I can't get to the internet?!
Any thoughts. I don't want to pressure the IT dept too much for I working towards intergration with my mac. So you know the "Windows" folks very keep it tight to the vest.
    Help if you can...

WebMarshal is a monitoring proxy server. Apparently all of your company's internet access goes through it (and may be logged or blocked)
You need to either talk to your network admin, or go through ALL of the network settings on your PC and figure out the Mac equivalents.
If your company uses Active Directory you may be stuck unless IT is willing to help.
