Forced second restart required after every s/w upgrade

As the subject title says...
on one of my two G4 Macs, after every/any software update that REQUIRES a restart, the restart never completes on it's own. I can actually hear the HD NOT having any disk activity. It just hangs when the screen goes from grey to blue with the spinning sprocket thingy.
If I hold the power button in until it forces a restart (iBook) it then reboots fine and the second attempt. Why?Why?Why?
This started maybe 2 years ago and never went away. It's just annoying more than anything else.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD...

I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...

  • External Display Problem - SMC Reset Required After EVERY Restart

I have a mid-2010 macbook pro that I often use in Clamshell mode with an external display (an ASUS VS239H-P 23-Inch Full-HD LED IPS monitor). I connect to my monitor with an Amazon brand HDMi cable via a Monoprice Mini Display Port to HDMI adapter. I'm running OS X 10.8.4.
Here's the problem... whenever I go "mobile" and disconnect my macbook pro from the external display, my macbook seems to work fine at first, but if I ever need to restart my macbook, it thinks it is still in clamshell mode upon reboot.  The built in display stays dark, and if I close the lid, the power indicator lights up and stays lit up; if I open the lid, the light disappears. It doesn't even matter if the power cord is plugged in or not, the computer thinks it is in clamshell mode.  This occurs ANY time I restart my computer, whether I'm booting into bootcamp or OS X.  If I do an SMC reset, I can successfully restart my computer.  But if I ever need restart my computer again, and I haven't reconnected to my external display, the problem happens all over again.  The only other way to fix the problem is if I plug my external display back in, then unplug it, which seems to remind my macbook that the display has been disconected.  Unfortunatley I can't do this if I'm out for business and my display is not near me.
What gives? What can I tweak to fix this? I'd rather not have to wipe the HD and do a fresh install of the OS.

It might be the CMOS battery has failed. That battery supplies power to holds all the firmware data, the system management controller data. So on a restart it is losing all that stored data for the SMC. You need to take the system to apple and have it fixed.

  • Restart required after attempt to upload photo to Facebook

My daughter has a 2007 MacBook 2.16 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo w/1 GB memory and running Mac OS X ver 10.5.8. The computer is running fine except that each time she tries to upload a photo to Facebook she gets a translucent box in the middle of the screen stating "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." A that point the computer is completely locked.
This is the only process that triggers this error. I have run diagnostics several times and everything checks out fine.

  • Restart computer after EVERY crash????

I heard or read somewhere that its BEST to restart the pc after a crash or the problem may just lurk there....this helps most of the time but again is Very frustrating......Here's another question it was said to look at nVidia - I have the GeForce 7500LE - are they any known problems with this one?  It's been 2 months of work on and off to get a 25 minute, 100 photo slide show put together with transitions, music and titles.....on a bad day (lots of crashes) I leave the project alone for a day or so (to rest)  but I had envisioned loading the pictures with automatic cross dissolve and tweaking a few transitions and adding titles and music and expecting it to take but a day or so....would a dedicated pc striped to the bones and even without internet acess do the trick....I'm grabbing at straws.  Remember I'm a novice about pcs so just finding the specs can take me awhile......I thought the PrElements was for someone like me.

    Taxi Mom,
Unfortunately, you've posted to the Tips & Tricks sub-forum. Maybe Steve will move it out to the main forum, where many more people will see your post, and help you.
In the meantime, it sounds like you've possibly got a few issues going on.
For crashes, take a look at this ARTICLE. It might help you gather "clues" as to what is happening, and maybe even point out the problem.
This ARTICLE will give you some tips on getting a computer ready for an editing session.
Last, let's talk about your still images. What size are they? For a DVD Project, the rec. is for no larger than 1000x750 pixels. This ARTICLE will give you tips on resizing, if necessary.
Hope that some of this helps,

  • Connect to iTunes required after every power off of Ipad 64GB wifi

My Ipad 64GB wifi model continually prompts to "connect to iTunes" every time I power off and power back on. This is extremely frustrating and the Apple Customer Care has asked that I return my iPad. I would rather find a solution since I am working Iraq and my Ipad is my e-book reader (in place of a Kindle. Steps taken thus far:
Reset iPad (Erase All Content and Settings)
    Reset Network settings
Reset All Settings (content not erased)
I've read that this problem sometimes occurs with some third-party applications installed (like Jailbird) . I do not have any of those applications installed. If anyone can offer a solution I would greatly appreciate it.
    Danielle

Since you erased all content and reinstalled the OS and this still happens, sounds like a hardware failure. You need to take the iPad back to an Apple store for an exchange.

  • Is a restart required after upgrading to 11.2 InstantClient

    Hello.
I have an environment with a lot of servers running in-house built applications running on Windows 2003 Servers. We are in the process of upgrading from (regular) Client 10.2 to Instant Client 11.2. I have a couple of questions, in case anyone can help me, but first some background info:
    - Our applications are always connected to the database; they use OCI
    - 11.2 Instant Client will be deployed to a new Oracle_Home (the one used by 10.2 client is in use by the running application during the upgrade process)
The question is this: once the 11.2 InstantClient is deployed and the environment variables are set on the servers, do my applications need to be restarted? What about the servers (do the servers need to be rebooted)? What I'm ideally looking for is Oracle's official recommendation, if one is available regarding post-install restart of applications and/or servers.
If I have not provided enough information for you to be able to answer my question, I'll be happy to do so; please do ask.
    Thank you for your time!

You will at probably have to restart your applications.
If your program is linked with oci.dll, the shared library is loaded into memory at program start and will only be unloaded when the process terminates.
If you happen to use dynamic loading, your program (if it was written like that) could unload the library (FreeLibrary) and load it again.
At any rate, there is no way to keep connected to the database.
Moreover, the running process will not notice any changes in the environment (such as putting the new oci.dll into the PATH).
Since this is Windows, once you stop your programs, a reboot will probably not hurt.
    Yours,
    Laurenz Albe

  • [SOLVED] Pointer on second monitor distorted after XOrg 1.9 upgrade

I updated to XOrg1.9 and my mouse pointer becomes distorted into a garbled rectangle of noise whenever I move to the second monitor. It's fine on the first. Using Catalyst drivers.
I can still use it, but its a giant garbled blob... anyone else experiencing this?
It looks fine on the first monitor.
EDIT: I replace my ATI card with an Nvidia one and used the nvidia-beta drivers. Mouse pointer looks fabulous on second monitor now. Only cost me $400 to fix my goddamn mouse pointer!

  • Feh not saving background after second restart

I use feh to manage my background and image viewing. I set my background with the following code.
    sudo feh --bg-fill ~/path/to/image.png
And I add my sh script to ~/.config/openbox/autostart (full autostart posted)
    (sleep 3 && /usr/bin/nm-applet --sm-disable) &
    tint2 &
    volumeicon &
    hsetroot -fill /usr/share/wallpapers/sandbox-background-scenic-dark-images-ocean-158600.jpg &
    #clipit &
    conky &
    sh ~/.fehbg &
    numlockx &
    # Enable as required
    #compton -cCGb &
    #xbacklight -set 100 &
    #/usr/bin/synclient TouchpadOff=1 &
    #xxkb &
    #spacefm -d &
    #setxkbmap gb &
But after every second restart, my background goes back to the default. First restart, it stays the same. Next restart, it shows the default.
If anyone could provide some help, I would greatly appreciate it.

I think you don't need to use sudo, it's user background.
You can add a line with feh in your autostart file and comment hsetroot.
    (sleep 3 && /usr/bin/nm-applet --sm-disable) &
    tint2 &
    volumeicon &
    #hsetroot -fill /usr/share/wallpapers/sandbox-background-scenic-dark-images-ocean-158600.jpg &

    #/usr/bin/synclient TouchpadOff=1 &
    #xxkb &
    #spacefm -d &
    #setxkbmap gb &
I don't know if it'll work but I'll try it.

  • Firefox is locking up VERY frequently after every few seconds unless I minimize the window and maximize it again. But then in a few seconds it locks up again, unable to click anything or DO anything

Firefox is locking up VERY frequently after every few seconds unless I minimize the window and maximize it again. But then in a few seconds it locks up again, I am unable to click anything or DO anything and it is becoming extremely annoying! Ya'll just released a new version that I'd hoped would have fixed this issue, apparently not...and I also can't select an option in a drop down box, I have to use my keyboard to do so...
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

Yeah I'm seeing this as well. A force quit and relaunch seems to solve the problem for a while.
IMHO the app has just gone downhill in the last few years. Useful tools like browser history from the back button are hidden / rendered useless (click and hold doesn't work so well from a track pad), and it's performance just isn't what it used to be.

  • MacBook Pro - After Battery dies I'm not able to type in login window, until forcing a restart

Hi, as mentioned in the header : MacBook Pro - After Battery dies I'm not able to type in login window, until forcing a restart
After the battery drains to 0% the computer switches off.... *Makes sense*
Once I put the charger power chord back in for an extended period of time I hit the power button and then see the login screen.... *Makes sense*
However it won't let me type into the login box therefore having to force a restart and lose any saved data or data open when it died of battery. *WEIRD*
This happens every time my computer runs out of battery. I understand that obviously not letting the laptop die is a good idea, however it seems like there is something wrong as it allows me to login yet won't let me type anything...
Any solutions? Anyone else experience this?
I have an early 2012 MacBook Pro - 15 Inch Screen.

    Hi s4mboy,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I'd start with resetting the SMC and PRAM on the MacBook Pro:

  • Back flush to ECC after every operation required.....  Is it possible?

    Hi,
I am having 10 operations in my Routing , need to consume inventory at operation 2, 4 and 9 (say), My Problem is that can I see  the ECC inventory back flush after every operation?
Component A Inventory is 10 at ECC and SAP ME too it is 10
Example - In operation 2 I consumed one then SAP ME Inventory should be 9 and same time ECC inventory also should be 9 at the same time.
Back flush after work order/SFC is complete is ok but I need Back flush after every operation that is what is required?  Is it possible?
    Regards
    Suhas

    Hi Jay
I would think you could accomplish this by configuring some variables. You would need one variable to store a total of the others. You would configure the other variables to store a zero initially, then a one when clicked. The buttons would trigger an advanced action that would set the variable to one, then check the tally. Perhaps reveal a hidden button after all buttons had been clicked. The buttons would simply jump to different slides. You wouldn't insert buttons on the slides so the user would be forced to view them in full.
I have somewhat of an example up at the link below.
My example forces the user to view four slidelets in any order before allowing the next slide to be reached.
Hopefully this will help you in some way... Rick

  • IPhone 6 plus screen freezes intermittently - forced restart required

I'm on an iPhone 6 plus with 128gb running 8.1.2.
It seems that intermittently (recently mostly in iMessage; which hasn't been behaving since 8 & yosemite) my phone screen freezes.
By freeze, I mean it is visible. It will even paralax on the home screen so some CPU/GPU stuff is working, I can even click and double-click the home button, but touching the screen elicits no response what so ever.
Recently a new version of the problem has only started in iMessage where I am getting some results, but never anywhere close to the target I actually touch.
    Is this a known issue?
Is there a solution, that is known to work?
Is this a hardware problem or software problem?
I have removed all non-apple keyboards because it seemed to always start when I was typing someplace (regardless of keyboard used).
    Suggestions? Help!
    Thanx!
    -- Dave

I've been having similar issues with iOS 8.1.3 on my six plus. It will freeze exactly as you describe--home button works, parallax works, but touching the screen elicits no response. I can also double-press the home button to bring up multi-task view, and I can scroll through the open apps, but I can neither change to another app nor swipe apps up to close them. The freezing occurs most often within the Messages and Email apps, but I've had it happen in Safari, Settings, Calendar, etc. When it happens, its usually a second or two after I open one of the apps in question. Once it freezes, I have to press the lock button and then unlock it, and then everything works fine again for a period. Restarting the phone doesn't really help, as it will randomly freeze again when using one of the aforementioned apps. Apple support recommended I try backing up to iTunes and restoring the phone using the Set up as New option. It seems to have helped a little. Maybe its my imagination, but it doesn't seem to be freezing nearly as often or as long (knocks on wood). But it did not alleviate the problem entirely.
