Forced Shutdown Required to reboot MacBook Pro

I have a MBP running 10.4.11. I recently changed my bluetooth mouse from the Mighty Mouse to the Kensington Pilotmouse Mini Bluetooth. I installed their Mouseworks 3.0r1 software. One big issue; if I do not shutdown bluetooth and then use the trackpad to shutdown the computer, the computer will not shutdown unless I use the power button to do so. The desktop icons disappear but the cursor icon remains active. This never happened with the Mighty Mouse. Is there another way to shut down the computer?

  • Brother MFC9840CDW lost when reboot MacBook Pro OS 10.7.4

I have a Brother MFC9840CDW printer and I'm running Mac OS X 10.7.4  Everytime I shutdown and reboot the Macbook Pro loses the wireless printer. (It stills shows the MFC9840CDW as an option, just doesn't stay put as the default printer.) If I plug in a USB wire to the mac and the brother printer, the printer connection is not lost, so it has something to do with the wireless connection.
Anyone else experiencing this problem or have a solution?
I have talked to Brother support with no solution other than to say wire the Mac to the printer.  Apple wants me to bring the printer into the genius bar, but the printer is enomorous and heavy, so that won't be happening.  Every time I fire up my Mac, I have to readd the Brother printer....which is getting really old.

    I have similar problem.
My Brother DCP-J315W will only start printing when I restart my MacBook Pro.
I have to restart for every single thing I want to print.
The only solution I found is sending the document/image to my iPod Touch with iCloud, and printing it using the Brother print and scan app.
This is also the only way I can scan something without directly printing it (also known as copying).

  • Corsair Force 3 180GB SS in MacBook Pro 8,2 very slow!!

    Dear Apple,
Last week I bought the Corsair Force 3 180GB SSD for my MacBook Pro I purchased just a few weeks ago. It is the basic 15" configuration with the only things changed are the screen, which is high-res glare and changed the keyboard layout from Dutch (I live in The Netherlands) to English International.
The SSD I bought for my MBP began showing failure, as soon as I installed Lion on it and it were to load the desktop and dock icons, it took a long time to do so. It was slower than the traditional HDD, it even showed the colored lolly mouse sign to show me it is being very busy. I thought it'd be once in a installation and that it needed time to get accustomed. Well... every half hour or so it began to hang and showed the same exact lolly mouse icon busy thing whereas I couldn't do a thing.
Luckily I had already bought a Force 3 180GB SSD before for my Asus laptop. I took it out the Asus laptop and swapped the new SSD (that seemingly is broken) with the 'old' SSD from the Asus laptop and began installing OS X Lion on it. First I erased the partitions with the Disk Utility from the Lion recovery disk and then I began installing Lion on it.
It seemed much better and it didn't hang anymore, so I was happy.
Then I began checking for the rated speed with 'Blackmagic Disk Speed Test' and XBench.
    ( http://imgur.com/nbEic and http://imgur.com/vyuIn for proof )
The speed is very poor!! It is even very close to a tradional hard disk drive..
The weird thing is that the SSD I also used in the asus laptop with Windows 7 x64 (specs are i7 2630QM 2.0ghz, 8GB DDR3 1333mhz RAM, nvidia GT540M/Intel HD3000 and the Force 3 180GB) it did reach 550/520MB as read and write.
Why won't it get those speeds in OS X Lion? I am very sure the MBP 8,2 has SATA3 for the hard drive SATA connector, and it is connected on that SATA connector.
The firmware of the drive had been updated to 1.3.3 but didn't improve my speeds on OS X Lion. So.. how are we gonna solve this?
I am going to return the faulty 'new' SSD back to the store I bought it and going for a RMA, but the SSD I am using now seems to be working well, but it isn't reaching its speeds, which is very weird because it did so in a Windows 7 x64 Laptop.
    Best regards,
    Rick van Dijk

I have the same problem but mine Corsair Force 3 SSD is upgraded in mid 2011 iMac.
    Here is my issue.
Here is my way what I've been through:
    • Apple authorized service: Before I went to service I wanted to test my SSD. It has an amaizing 550MB/s speed on PC (SATA3 port). After I get back my SSD upgraded iMac, I ran some dick benchmark on win7 bootcamp and OSX Lion 10.7.3. Both came back with dissapointing 180-230MB/s speed result. I have the latest EFI 1.9 firmware, and SSD 1.3.3. firmware. I called the service and asked for help. They have no idea what is wrong or what to do...
    • Apple express lane: After a 1 hour phone call I got an advice to take back to service where my SSD was built in even if they do not know what to do with it...
    • Corsair support: They said: "if speed was good on PC it should be good on mid 2011 iMac, because my firmware is supporting the 6GB/s link speed. Also remmended to go back to service..
I read that PRAM could solve problem, but it did not work for me. I will completely erase my drive and reinstall the osx without mirroring it or something like that. If this will solve my problem I will let you know. If not: SERVICE! I'M COMING!

  • After updating iTunes and rebooting MacBook Pro does not reboot.

So after installing the update of the new iTunes the system needed to reboot. Screen remains black, battery is full and even with connection to the power network. When pressing the power button you hear the system starts working but stops after unpressing the power button. Also no sound of any HDD or other lights start working (apart from the green power light on the battery at the back / power network) Also the small white light next to the screen opener just goes on for 3 seconds or something. My MacBook Pro is from October 2008 and had further all available updates and 4GB of RAM. Anyone a solution?
    Thanks in advance

  • 10.5.2 update on external HD hangs on reboot -  MacBook Pro

I am attempting to replace the 100G internal of my 15" MacBook Pro with a 200G Seagate 7200rpm drive - thought I'd install Leopard and 10.5.2 upgrade before replacing the internal drive. I'm using an Ultra USB 2.0/SATA adaptor and power supply to temporarily attach the new drive as an external USB. Installing Leopard from the install CD on this new blank drive went without a hitch and drive boots fine. However, two attempts at installing the 10.5.2 upgrade result in a disk that permananently hangs at the startup screen with the spinning icon (even in attempted "safe" mode). First attempt was using the "Software Update" menu option. The second was with the downloaded combo upgrade, and I did get a confirmation of a successful update, but my MacBook will absolutely not reboot from this drive, so I keep reverting to the internal which has 10.4.11. Why is this happening? Running Disk Utility off my Tiger disk on the external indicates no problems. I'm certainly not going to swap out my old drive until I can get 10.5.2 to work on the new one, and I'm petrified to even consider trying to put 10.5.2 on the soon to be replaced internal. There is no other software on the new drive other than 10.5.2. What is it about the 10.5.2 update that is causing so much trouble on my MacBook Pro? I was able to install Leopard and the 10.5.2 update on its own internal drive in my G4 tower without a hitch but the laptop install has me stumped. I've had to learn perhaps more than I wanted to know over the past couple of days about this issue, but it's apparently not yet enough to fix it.

I suggest wiping the HD and starting over. BTW, you didn't mention if you migrated your Tiger stuff on initial boot. That's the smart thing to do.
Instead of installing any updates via Software Update, just run it to see what's needed, and manually download them. Install them in the order listed under SU, one at a time, checking SU after each one, to ensure that the sequence hasn't changed.

  • Reboot MacBook Pro 15 " early 2011

    Hi guys
Probably a question that has been answered already thousands of times... Sorry
How do I reboot (completely reinstall my MacBook Pro, like it was when I bought it.
What are the things to pay attention to before I do this
    How can I do it?
How much time does it take?
    How difficult is it?
    Many thanks!
    Bob

In computer context, rebooting signifies having the preexisting operating system power up again. What you want is to reinstall the O.S. Yes, a frequent question. Since you're using Lion, I would start by getting a blank USB flash drive of 1GB or more and concocting a standalone Lion Recovery Disk. See here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433 and here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848. Also indispensable is a speedy Internet link or $70 bucks to blow, if you want to finish reasonably soon. The fullblown Lion installer weights in at around 4GB, give or take a few MB, and once you start the process, the Mac won't work again until you are done. The seventy bucks gets you Lion on a Stick, the official installer on a USB flash drive (so you won't need the other drive mentioned earlier): http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD256Z/A?fnode=MTY1NDAzOA. You decide which way to go.
With that dealt with, if you're going the El Cheapo route, stick your Recovery Disk in, restart and hold down the Option key before the chime. Pick the USB Recovery disk from the list, click on the arrow to boot there. Get past the languages screen, use Disk Utility to Erase the Macintosh HD volume, then quit to return to the picker window and select Install Mac OS X. When the installer starts and valdates your eligibility to a free Lion re-install, pick the Macintosh HD volume you just erased, let'er rip and go have fun elsewhere. Last time I did it at home with a 2Mbps link, took 7 hours to finish downloading. After concluding, it will reboot and the Mac will be running the Setup Assistant like when first turned on. **Note: if you don't want to go thru the LONG wait, stop the thing before it restarts and you'll be able to save the installer and construct your model-specific Lion on a Stick. See here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3786371?tstart=0 Just note that once the thing restarts, the installer is gone.
If you're Daddy Warbucks and bought the Official Lion USB Installer, just stick it in, boot from there as explained above, and follow instructions.

  • Can you recover lost data after reboot macbook pro?

my step-daughter rebooted her macbook pro  and it restored to it's original state
lost all her data/document's /photo's etc ... data was not backed up on a external hard drive.
is there a way to recover?

If she was installing a new OS and erased the whole disk, you will not be able to recover everything. You can try "Data Rescue". As long as you don't install anything new on the drive, you can link it to another mac and try to rescue partial files...

  • Random shutdown on a 15" macbook pro

Hello, my macbook pro has started to randomly shutdown. The battery does not seem to charge much beyond 0% either. Here is the battery information from System Profiler -- is it likely just a battery issue?
    Model Information:
    Serial Number: Sony-ASMB012-356a-75f4
    Manufacturer: Sony
    Device name: ASMB012
    Pack Lot Code: 0003
    PCB Lot Code: 0000
    Firmware Version: 102a
    Hardware Revision: 0400
    Cell Revision: 0303
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 0
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 1674
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 309
    Condition: Good
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 1945
    Voltage (mV): 11875

It's picking a particularly bad way of telling you - your MBP should never just shut down - bug given your charge capacity seems significantly down from what you should be able to achieve I'd say yes, it looks to be a battery issue.
    How old is your Mac?
Your battery should retain about 80% of its charge capacity after 300 cycles, and since you only have 309 cycles, your battery seems to be much below that.
If you've an Apple Store nearby and you're under warranty or AppleCare you may want to ask about it - they might replace your battery at no charge, depending upon a wide variety of factors.

  • Cords Required to Watch Macbook Pro on TV

I have the a Macbook Pro that I purchased in August of 2009. I purchased the 13 inch model, but with the 15 inch tech specs. I have an Emerson 32 inch LCD tv and I was wondering what cords I would need to watch movies on the TV via my Macbook Pro. The tv does not have a headphone jack port for audio so I need help getting the proper audio and video cords.

"Standard audio visual ports" doesn't tell us anything useful. That's why no one is responding.
If the TV set has built-in stereo speakers, it probably has red and white RCA female audio inputs for analog audio. If that's the case, you can use an audio cable with a stereo mini phone plug to connect to your MBP's headphone port and dual RCA male plugs on the other end to connect to the TV. Such cables are available at Radio Shack, Best Buy, etc. If the TV also has a digital (optical) audio input, you can use a mini-TOSlink-to-TOSLink cable for digital sound. This will give cleaner sound than an analog connection, though for many purposes the difference won't be apparent.
For the video but not the audio (because your MBP model doesn't output audio through the mini-displayport), you can use a mini-displayport-to-HDMI adapter and a standard HDMI male-to-male cable of the appropriate length. Or you can use a mini-displayport-to-VGA adapter and a VGA male-to-male cable is the TV has a VGA input port (sometimes labeled PC or Computer). Or you can use a mini-displayport-to-DVI adapter and a DVI male-to-male cable if the TV has a DVI input port. If the TV has S-Video, Component Video or Composite Video inputs, use DVI, HDMI or VGA instead of any of those: you'll get a better picture.

  • I cant reboot macbook pro with snow leopard

I just shut down my computer and I can not start it again On the display a folder with a question mark is blinking. When I plug a time machine backup it opens Utilities. I repaired permissions and the disc (main drive), and I still can't restart it. Please help!
    Jerzy

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Reboot macbook pro

please could someone describe me step byy step how to reboot my mac?

Your Mac doesn't have a virus. If you have a problem with iTunes it's best to post in the iTune forum here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/itunes
where the iTunes experts are. Going through a restore is generally unnecessary and time consuming. If your English isn't very good post in your native language in as much as there are Google translators available.

my macbook pro started acting strange after a safari reset.
the mouse no longer: animates the dock, activates hot corners or selects pages from safari 'top sites' (without a hassle). attempts to reset dock and hot corners from preferences has been fruitless
the mouse also gets 'stuck' in logic precipitating force quits.
i run osX 10.6.8 on a 2007 macbook pro that has had 2 motherboards replaced autumn 2010.
my troubleshooting has been: restart, pRam and safe boot, also checking a 'test' account to find the same issues extant.
pRam restart caused airport to quit and say there is no airport card, and wouldn't respond untill another reboot.
macbook pro 15" 2.4 GHz intel core duo.2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
i have treated this book with care, yet run logic pro studio to the limit of this book's abilities.
    what shoud i do?

You don't say which year you have, however...
...there are known problems with the mid-2010 models (see http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US) as well as early and late 15" 2011 models (see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0).
Apple has taken ownership of the problems with the 2010 model but, unfortunately, the free logic board replacement for that model has probably long expired for you - three years after date of purchase.
One the 2011 models Apple has admitted no defect. You'll just have to skim the articles to get an overview of the problems that people are having (usually showing up as screen glitches at first and then going downhill from there).
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Power input specs for MacBook Pro

Anyone know if Apple have (or are going to) released information on the actual power input requirements for the MacBook Pro ? I specifically mean for the machine, NOT it's AC adapter.
They came tantalisingly close for the 17" PowerBook with this :
    http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2001/qa1266.html
I suspect the answer is going to be NO, if so then I would suggest they reconsider their policy - making up new proprietry connectors and restricting the supply of third party products like this is really having an effect on their image. People DO notice this sort of thing, and suggest they've been taking lessons from Microsoft in how to restrict people/force them to buy more than they intended.
Given that I've a box full of dead Apple supplies for PowerBooks, some of which have already been repaired and given a second life, then I'd rather put off buying a MacBook until I know I can either make, buy, or adapt a third party supply (at a reasonable cost). I'm powering my PowerBoook now off a third party supply that seems better built and was half the price of an Apple supply. Plus I need three, one to live under the desk at home, another to live under the desk at work, and a third to go around in my case - it makes life so much easier. I've no intention of shelling out for three extra Apple supplies (two extras and a spare for WHEN one packs in).

You might want to ask this in the MacBook Pro forums… you're in the MacBook forums.

  • A1212 Macbook Pro Cooling Fan Speed / SMC / Service Battery

    Background:
I've owned my A1212 Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo since launch (Thanksgiving 2006 I believe). For some time now the temperature has been quite warm - more recently my right cooling fan has intermittently sounded like a jet engine and failed to speed beyond 1,500-2,000 rpm intermittently.
    1. I ordered the correct cooling fan for A1212 right and replaced.
    2. When I rebooted Macbook Pro here is what I see for temps in hardware monitor
    AMBIENT TEMP 31C/88F
    CPU A 44C 111F
    CPU CORE 1:36C/97F
    CPU CORE 2:39C/100F
"SMART DISK" — [DOES THIS MEAN THERE IS A SENSOR THAT IS NOT REGISTERING]
The hottest temp recorded is 109F/ CPU A temperature diode
The new cooling fan is majorly cooling the mac much better than prior fan.
    3. I can't find ANY way to stop the mac from running both cooling fans at 6,000rpm
    a) reset SMC (tried holding down power button 20 seconds after disconnecting battery
    b) reboot
    c) remove smcfancontrol
    d) use smcfancontrol
    e) monitor with temp monitor, hardware monitor, istat pro
    f) no runaway processes - not even hot
    4) I notice ( this was also showing up before install of new fan) in my battery icon it indicates "Service Battery" - while I do have a 4 yr old computer there was a recall on batteries so this battery is maybe 3 yrs old and I usually use computer plugged in.
I do not have my snow leopard boot dvd readily available to run hardware test on sensors, however techtool pro does not report any issues. I have not found any terminal commands to force the fan speed down nor any indication I have any apps that are accelerating it.
It appears that my fan speeds are accelerating shortly after power up - before OS X is even loaded completely - and never slow to normal speed except when mac is asleep.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO CONNECT THE FAN INVERTED (THE TWO PINS) MESSING UP ABILITY TO CONTROL FAN SPEED?
IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I INADVERTENTLY BROKE SOME SENSOR "SMART"?
I am thinking more and more that this is hardware related like a sensor. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, while I don't have a Jet engine I have a very noisy mac

    Hi N,
SMART reports on a number of checks on the HD. I don't believe that's any part of the current issue.
I agree with you that my first inclination is toward a sensor issue; by default, if the sensor's are not reporting properly, the fans run full speed/6000RMP.
