Forced to eject iPod

In a recent attempt to test the battery life of my 30G iPod, I changed iTunes' settings to manual update of my iPod. I knew this would force me to have to eject the iPod when I was done updating. However, now that I'm done with the test, I've changed the setting back to automatically update, but I am still forced to eject the iPod when it is done; it no longer updates and then automatically pops up that it is OK to disconnect.
Other than reinstalling iTunes, does anyone have any ideas?
iTunes 6.0.5.20 on WinXP Pro.

Your welcome,
Not sure what it says in the apple artical about testing the battery (Been awhile since I been there) but in alot of articals they have they don't mention to uncheck this when setting it back to "Auto Update".

  • Keep getting error message when trying to eject iPOD nano

When trying to eject iPOD, getting error message ..."cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application". No other application is open but iTUNES. What does this mean? and are there any tricks to get it to eject?

Usually this is caused when antivirus "Grabs" the drive to scan it in the background, and/or windows itself "Grabs" the drive for indexing and things. It also happens if you play a song off the ipod thru iTUnes, then stop it.
Usually rebooting will force it to let go

  • Trouble ejecting iPod in Win2000

    Hi all,
I have a small issue with an iPod 5th Gen Video in Windows 2000. Each time I try to eject / unmount the iPod, it is ejected, then it re-mounts immediately; so I cannot disconnect the cable because the iPod is always in use.
    Same issue happens when
    - ejecting iPod from iTunes (both eject buttons at the bottom or in the source list);
    - ejecting iPod from USB Device Manager; when I click on "Eject", the iPod unmounts then mounts back immediately;
    - ejecting the iPod in Explorer (Right-clic, then "Eject").
So far to avoid any problem, I just disconnect the iPod after I shut down the computer. But I would like to know if there is a way to fix this.
    More info:
    - no error message at any time. The iPod can be ejected correctly, but it mounts back in Explorer and iTunes immedialtely after it was ejected. On iPod, menu appears for approx. 1 second, then the display goes back to "Do not disconnect"
    - iTunes 7.0.2.16
    - Windows 2000 (5.00.2195) SP4
    - iPod connected at the back USB port of my computer
    - USB 2.0 on motherboard MSI KT4 Ultra (MS-6590)
    - iPod software 1.2.1
    - Model MA003FB - Format: Windows
    Already tried:
    - reinstall iTunes -> same problem
    - reset iPod -> same problem
    - restored iPod -> did not help
    - connected iPod in another admin user -> same problem
    - tried on another USB port -> same issue
What I don't understand : I also have an iPod Mini (2nd Gen), which is working perfectly fine. With this, the eject process is OK.
    Any other idea ?
Thanks in advance for your replies,
    Phil
    MA003FB   Windows 2000

    Additional info :
    1. Same iPod 5th Gen (Model MA003FB - Format: Windows) behave perfectly at eject on a Mac OS X system.
    2. iPod is set for manually sync because library too big for an auto sync.

Hi just wanted to let you know I solved most of my XP problems with my new IPOD. It won't recognise the IPOD or driver and froze and locked up and then the battery died. After hours of trying different things here is what I did. I completly closed computer down. Waited 15 minutes turned on and reloaded everything. I put the usb cable in but not hooked up to IPOD. I turned off Mcaffee (all of it). After my computer came on. I then went and closed everything I didn't need in the bottom toolbar. (taskbar). I then reloaded the software and waited. Took forever to reload and I don't know why but whatever it worked but I DID NOT HOOK UP THE IPOD LIKE IT SAID! I instead shut down the computer after loading the software and waited 5 minutes and turned it back on. I again waited and shut of mcaffee. It loaded everything fine this time and said new hard ware and drivers detected. I plugged my IPOD in and YES I WAS UP AND RUNNING (THIS IS AFTER 6 HOURS OF PLAYING WITH OTHER THINGS!) I am able to load and play, burn, watch movies, see pictures and everything your suppose too! The only thing I see different than the instructions is I left my usb cable plugged in and when it said to eject the disk I didn't. I also didn't plug in the IPOD (5th Gen) and then I shut down waited and then restarted the computer. I hope this helps others because I know the feeling of wanting to return something you paid dearly for and worked hard at saving money to buy one and it doesn't work. My only thing I dislike about apple is they didn't supply a ac adapter for the IPOD and the instructions say to plug it up when trying to charge battery. DUHHHHHH, ya can't do that if ya don't have one and stores are closed and won' open until Monday! But at least I am up and running. I just hate having to plug up IPOD to computer daily to charge the battery which only last a half a day1

  • Need to eject iPod while connected to PC without iTunes software

OK. I messed up. I'm traveling and my iPod's battery ran down. I thought I could connect it to my business laptop (which doesn't have iTunes software). It worked. My battery is charged, but now it's telling me to eject before disconnecting. How can I eject without the iTunes software, and if I download it and then eject, will I lose all my music (at least until I resync after I get back home)?
    Thanks!

    Hello dwayneham,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are alternative ways to safely and properly eject your iPod outside of iTunes. For more help, check out this Apple support document, specifically the section on *Additional ways to eject iPod*. No need to download or install iTunes, unless you wish to do so. It wouldn't actually delete anything unless you restored it via iTunes or chose to "Erase and Sync" the iPod with the iTunes library on your laptop.
    Hope this helps.

  • Ejecting iPod

I've just gotten a the latest U2 iPod and have successfully loading all of my songs and videos onto it. But, it is now fully charged and even though the screen says "iPod update is complete" I try using the eject iPod button but the program keeps telling me "cannot disconnect. Files are being used in another program". I have no other programs on my computer running....what's going on?

when it does that try 2 restsrt ur computer and then when ur computer is back, it will clear and now u can eject it, if this continues u will need 2 try the 5r's. the 5R's are five steps 2 well being of an ipod. it is found at apple.com.on de left side of de page.good luck.

  • Ejecting iPod won't work

(trying again here as 1st time I got no answer):
Is there a setting I can change on my iPod or PC that will allow me to click the little "eject iPod" button and have it actually eject? The computer says my iPod "cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application."
I'm automatically updating podcasts but manually controlling music. And I've checked the box that says "enable disk use" as when I uncheck it iTunes wants to totally redo all the music that's on the iPod.
    Thanks in advance.

"I'm automatically updating podcasts but manually controlling music."
    How are you doing this?
For the eject issue, try these.
Easy way. Reset the iPod, then disconnect when you see the Apple logo.
Another way. Hold ctr-alt-del to bring up the Windows Task Manager. Go to the Processes tab and look for iTunesHelper.exe and iPodService.exe. Select them and hit the End Process button. Close the Windows Task Manager Window and try ejecting the iPod via the safely remove hardware method.
If you are still having problems you can try one more thing. Right click on the My Computer icon and select Manage from the list of actions. Go to the Services and Applications item and from there the services item. Double click on the services item to bring up the list of services currently installed on your computer. Look for the iPod Service and double click on it. From the new window select Stop. Now try again to eject using the safely remove hardware option.
McAfee ActiveScan security software also can cause a problem, and if you have this you might want to try turning it off and see if the iPod then ejects correctly.
If all else fails shut down the computer and disconnect the iPod.

  • AppleScript to 'eject' iPod after copying is done.  Need a trick!

I'd like my AppleScript to eject my iPod Shuffle after it is done copying podcasts to it. Unfortunately, the 'duplicate' command is "asynchronous", meaning that it returns immediately, without waiting for the copies to complete. More unfortunately, instead of failing, the 'eject' command puts up a stupid dialog asking if it wants the copying to be interrupted, and halts copying until the user replies.
Does anyone know a to work around this?
    Jerry Krinock
Here is the tail end of my podcast-updating script:
set nNewPodcasts to (count of newPodcasts)
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to {"
    if (nNewPodcasts > 0) then
set newPodcastNamesList to newPodcastNames as text
    display dialog "There are " & nNewPodcasts & " new podcasts:" & return & return & newPodcastNames & return & return & "Should copy these to " & iPodName & "?" buttons ["No", "Copy"] default button 2
if button returned of result is "Copy" then
    with timeout of 30 * 60 seconds
    repeat with aTrack in newPodcasts
    try
log "Copying " & name of aTrack
    duplicate aTrack to iPodPlaylist
    end try
    end repeat
    end timeout
    end if
    else
display dialog "There are no new podcasts to copy to " & iPodName
    end if
    -- Eject the iPod
(* Unfortunately, the "duplicate" above is another asynchronous command; i.e. it returns before the job is complete. Therefore, we try and work around this by trying to eject the iPod repeatly every 5 seconds until success. But, instead, it puts up a stupid dialog. *)
    repeat while exists thePod
    log "iPod " & iPodName & " exists"
    try
    eject thePod
    on error
    log "Could not eject iPod"
    end try
    delay 4
    end repeat
say iPodName & " has been ejected"

Use Disk Utility to burn disc images. Select the image to burn, then click on the Burn icon in the DU toolbar. The subsequent dialog has several options you can choose including Eject after burning.

  • Error Message Cannot eject ipod shuffle

Hi. I would appreciate any help possible. I just received an ipod shuffle as a gift. I cannot get it to play anything whatsoever. An error message I receive provides a possible clue to the problem, however. Whenever I try to eject the ipod shuffle, I receive an error message stating the ipod "cannot be ejected because it contains files that are in use by another application." No application, other than iTunes, is running.
    Many thanks.

select ipod from the itunes source menu (on the lefthand side, w/ ipod icon). Click the Eject iPod button in the lower right corner of the iTunes window. when it has been succesfully disconnected you should get a msg that it is ok to disconnect on the itunes screen.
If it still appears, it is ok to disconnect, then simply reset it by turning it off, wait 5 seconds, and back on. This will save anything you may have on it.

  • Here's the exact scenario with it: 1) Ipod connected successfully to iTunes. 2) Drag song from Library(in AAC format) to My Ipod. 3) Song plays successfully in iTunes. BTW: This is one of the songs from my cd. Not bought. 4) Eject Ipod. 5) Find song in

Here's the exact scenario with it:
    1) Ipod connected successfully to iTunes.
    2) Drag song from Library(in AAC format) to My Ipod.
    3) Song plays successfully in iTunes.
BTW: This is one of the songs from my cd. Not bought.
    4) Eject Ipod.
    5) Find song in Ipod and press play.
    6) Display for song and time appear.
    7) About 1/3 of a second of the song plays, then it cuts out and restarts itself. (boots me back to apple logo)

Nope - and it was set to not look for them.
The final clue came when I tried hooking the drive directly to the computer, instead of to the airdisk. iTunes still hung. Then I disconnected the drive and tried to run it, and iTunes came up right away - but with an ! next to each song. Clearly it was trying to find/touch every file in the library on first startup.
I didn't try plugging in the drive and leaving the hanging iTunes running for more than a few minutes, so it's possible that it would have recovered and launched. But after removing the XML file, restoring the library to my pre-7.7 version, I could hear it accessing the directly attached drive (and see it in disk activity in the monitor) for a few minutes (less than I'd left the hanging one trying), before it came up.
    Conclusion:
    1) 7.7 is definitely trying to touch/see all the files in the library on first launch (proved by the ! when they are missing).
    2) Disconnecting/interrupting the touch/see MAY have corrupted something (can't prove it).
    3) Since touching 10,000 files takes a LONG time even at 802.11n speeds (let alone b or g), it's worth the hassle to plug the drive in directly for the first time.
    4) Patience is a virtue

  • ITunes freezes when I'm trying to eject iPod (classic, 160GB)

I JUST got my new MacBook and iPod like 3 days ago and now all of a sudden iTunes freezes when I'm trying to eject iPod.
It's very annoying considering I never had this problem w/my old MacBook or my old iPod and this stuff is brand new!
I know a lot of people have similar problem. Did ANYONE find out what to do with it? Or do I have to drive to Apple Store again?
    Thank you!

Do you have any better luck with that if you update to iTunes 10.6.1.7?
From the notes for the release:
iTunes 10.6.1 provides a number of improvements, including:
    • Fixes several issues that may cause iTunes to unexpectedly quit while playing videos, changing artwork size in Grid view and syncing photos to devices.
    • Addresses an issue where some iTunes interface elements are incorrectly described by VoiceOver and WindowEyes.
    • Fixes a problem where iTunes may become unresponsive while syncing iPod nano or iPod shuffle.
    • Resolves an ordering problem while browsing TV episodes in your iTunes library on Apple TV.

  • Cannot properly eject iPod

Whenever I connect my iPod to update it with new songs it appears that evertying works fine while the iPod is updating. Once the iPod is done updating I see the message in iTunes reading, "iPod finished updating" or something like that, except now the "Do Not Disconnect" warning stays on my iPod even after it is done updating. When I go to eject it through iTunes I get a message reading something like, "Cannot eject iPod because it contains files in use by another program." I did not have this problem before iTunes 7 came out. For the record, I'm disappointed with iTunes 7 because one thing that really bugs me about it is that scrolling through my library is so much slower now. Before iTunes 7 I could scroll up and down the hundreds of songs in my library fast, but now it scrolls slow.

Could it be the gapless function checking your downloaded tracks? I had the same thing - all tracks downloaded, but "warning message stays on ipod. Then I clicked the left arrow (were the message says your ipod is updated & is complete) And found another message saying "it was analyzing the tracks" - so it wasn't finished.Go 7 ??

  • Ejected iPod remounts when a CD is inserted

If using iTunes 7, and you happen to have your ejected iPod still charging through the USB, the iPod will be remounted if you insert a CD. It will then proceed to re-sync. Inconvenient.
Anyone have the link for iTunes feedback?

hopefully a much needed update will remedy this and other iTunes 7 problems.
