Forced to leave Captivate, grudgingly...

fyi. Our company unfortuantely has to stop using Captivate 5 because it's not compatible with ARticulate Presenter 9.  Our company has migrated everyone to Win7 and will not allow us to run Captivate 4 on our laptops, (don't ask). Thus no choice but to throw away our Captivate 5 versions and no longer use.  It's sad because we liked Captivate's ability to record simulations...  Please consider publishing in AS2 for Captivate 5 movies.  Customers demand a "fix" or are left with no choice but to find an alternative to Captivate 5.  Please send this up your chain to executives that care...

Hi there
Sorry to see you go, but I do understand.
You might take a moment to complete the Wish Form/Bug Report to alert the development team to the desire for AS2 ability. (Link is in my sig)
Cheers... Rick

  • ESS Leave

    Hi All,
I have a requirements where, for certain leave types, an attachment is required from the user before they can submit their leave for approval.
The way it is currently set up is that the user can submit their leave request for that leave type even though they have not added the attachment. In the user's universal worklist an email will appear stating that before this leave can be approved an attachment needs to be added. The problem with this way is that the user's manager can see the leave request in their universal worklist and approve it without the attachment.
My question is that is there a way to force the leave request to error if there is no attachment? So it will not be able to be sent but rather force the user to add the attachment as opposed to sending him a mail in his worklist to say he must do this?
    Thanks

    Hi,
There is nothign to do with the workflow template, and nothing has to be modified or enhaced in the existing workflow. The soultion for your issue would be handled from the badi PT_GEN_REQ badi's implementation(CL_DEF_IM_PT_GEN_REQ) class under the method START_WORKFLOW.
As per your description, What I think is if there is not attachment included while applying leave then you do not want to start the workflow and popup and error message to the end user right?
So if you want to start workflow along with the attachment then you need to first send the attchement to the workflow container while starting the workflow. So do the respective manipulation to get the attachment into the method START_WORKFLOW and then validate whether the attcachment existis or not, if not then simply skip the step of starting workflow and populate the error message.

  • Adobe Presenter 7 and Captivate - WHY?

In the ongoing Adobe product confusion where product names
and features overlap and where product families are supposed to
complement each other we now have Adobe Presenter 7.
It looks just like captivate with two important differences
    in Presenter 7:
You lose the Captivate screen recording
You gain a slide progress pane in the presentation (not a
progress bar, it shows the slide titles vertically)
This Presenter 7 tool is billed as an import facility to
Flash enable and quiz enable PowerPoint slides.
Sounds just like Captivate and looks just like captivate with
the exception of the above items
So why bother to make another product? All they needed to do
was leave Captivate alon and then add the slide progress pane and
you have the same product with the ability to do screen recording.
Seems odd to add another product with another name to the already
bloated Adobe family of product. More unusual is the complete
overlap of features seen here. Presenter 7 seems to have some
features that might show up in the next release of Captivate, but
Presenter appears to add only the progress of the slides as a side
pane? Why bother to have two products?
It looks like the Adobe Connect Pro package includes
Presenter 7 and that makes sense, but why not just include
Captivate with Connect Pro and then add the navigation progress
pane found in Presenter. Way too much overlap of product here and
it woul dbe nice if captivate would include this one new feature
    from Presenter.
Look at it this way, Captivate is Like "Presenter Pro" and
all they need to do is add one simple navigation progress pane,
convert to the enhanced sound editing screen and presto...
But why would anyone spend the additional $500.00 for a copy
of Presenter when it is basically Captivate with one minor addition
and no screen recording? Strange product plan, very strange indeed.
    Joe C.

My goodness I logged on just to ask why Adobe had Presenter
in addition to Captivate and I found this posting that says EXACTLY
    what was on my mind.
When you consider the amount of overlap between the two
programs, it's bewildering. Anyone here from Adobe with some idea
of the reason behind making Presenter? From Adobe's presentation of
the product, Presenter basically publishes presentations, pools and
    quizzes in flash or pdf.

  • GPU 0 Die Temp Sensor ERROR on a MacBook Pro. Can anybody help?

    Hello.
My wife has a 15-inch, 2.4GHz MacBook Pro model 3.1 laptop.
All of sudden the screen started to flicker, and after that,  it could no longer be booted. Applelogo visible but the timewheel stops and nothing happens.
I managed to get hold of a copy of ASD (Apple Service Diagnostic) for her computer, and I found out what was wrong:
There is a test called "Temp Sensor - GPU 0 Die Temp" that fails. I get the following message:
"Temp sensor GPU 0 Die Temp test 1 - Sensor Reads Within Operating Range
    - Check to ensure that sensor reads within operating range.
ERROR - Unable to read sensor
    - TEST FAILED -
Temp sensor GPU 0 Die Temp test 8 - Sensor Noise Test
    - Checks that sensor Noise is within spec.
ERROR - Unable to read sensor
    - TEST FAILED -"
If I look in the "Hardware Profile" under "sensor" I find the following:
    "Sensor
    type:            Temperature
    location:            TG0D
    low-limit:            15
    high-limit:        85
    reading:            1.0
    description:        GPU 0 Heatsink Temp
    noise-tolerance:    1.0"
The thing is that the problem seems to be intermittent. It comes and goes. All of a sudden the test passes and I can boot the computer. Some days the computer can  work for a whole day, so it doesn´t  seem to be related to temperature.
What do you guys and girls think? Is this fixable by myself? Does anybody know where this sensor is located? Maybe it´s just a bad connection, since it´s intermittent?
I feel I have come a little bit on the way to be able to solve this issue, and it would feel like a failure to be forced to leave the computer at an Apple Service Center, if it´s even worth it to do that. There is a risk that the computer is not worth a repair.
Could someone please chime in here for a clever advice?
    Thanks.
    Bo Reimer.

    Welcome Bo!
It may be related to a known problem with MBPs 3,1 and 4,1. Some had a bad Nvidea Geforce 8600M GT video chipset that could fail under high heat cpnditions. There is an Apple Repair Extension Program (REP) that will fix the defect at no charge for up to four years from date of purchase:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
You'll need to have an Apple retail store or an authorized service provider check the computer with a special test gadget for positive ID of the problem to qualify. If it does, you get a new logic board. Reported turnaround for the fix is from same day to three days.
If their test does not turn up the Nvideo curse, you still have an affordable repair option if you live in North America (It would he helpful if you fill in the "Geographic Information" field in your profile--at this point I'm having to assume you're in N. America)).
The option is a depot repair. Apple sends your computer to their central refurbishment facility and bascially fixes anything outside of cosmetic damage for a flat fee of about US$315--much cheaper that a new computer. Taxes and shipping may apply.
People who have used this option are reporting excellent results and a turnaround of about one business week.

  • Recent MCI to Verizon Residential Service conversion - Terrible

    Hi Folks,
It is my understanding that Verizon staff members do review the posting here. I hope that this is the case as I would like to share many issues that I have experienced to help improve the process and services offered by Verizon.
First, ALL of the folks that I spoke with were very pleasant on the phone including someone in India! This is about all the good news that I can offer.
Background - Happily using MCI residential services over a number of years with two accounts. MCI worked great and performed all services in a clean and efficient manner.
Forced to leave MCI services and advised via letter that Verizon would pick up in the foot steps of MCI - I also understood that I could select other phone service providers other then Verizon if I choose to. Now I wish I had!!!!!
Typical MCI services that I had:
    Caller ID
    Call Waiting Caller ID
    Three party Conference Call
    Caller announce
    Speed Dial
    Voice Mail
Call Waiting, No Answer Transfer to multiple locations with Caller announce (managed by me the user)
Email Caller ID info (Sent to places I managed i.e. Black Berry - pop mail etc)
Internet Voice Mail pickup & Play - Store
Fast Access to Voice Mail from local phone (Dial 00)
Fast Access to Voice Mail from cell phone
Easily talk to live person for any variety of issues - Trouble - Billing - Competitive discounts - Promotions
Initial conversion to MCI (ALL service available and ready the day of conversion!!!!!!!!
Now the Verizon story and Oh what a story they weave.
Contacted the conversion Team as per the conversion letter TWICE two accounts.
Discussed all of the features that I had with MCI and Verizon's features & price (Did this twice - Two accounts)
Told by Verizon conversion department that 99% of the services are the same - NOT TRUE! Further the services were included in the discounted package (NOT TRUE!)
No date provided for the conversion
Call Waiting Caller ID was not provisioned
Speed Dial is not part of the package - More dollars and wait to have this added after service was turned up
Speed Dial is crippled and not very useful - No pause control so I can not program access number pause pause pause then account code or access number or pin number etc. Most Verizon folks I talked to have no clue as to what pause is in a speed dial string (this concept has been around for over 20 years - What is with Verizon?
Three party Conf call is NOT included in package Additional cost and wait to have this added after service was turned up
Call Waiting, No Answer Transfer to multiple locations (managed by me the user) is not available
Caller announce not part of package
Told that Email Caller ID info (Sent to places I managed i.e. Black Berry - pop mail etc) is not available - Found out from friends that have Verizon service that it is available via Verizon Call Assist
Contacted Verizon one day after orders placed to insure that I would have Verizon Call Assistant - Still waiting a week later - placed over 40 calls to numbers provided by Verizon (pass me on to someone or something else i.e. automated talking systems and 12 hours of on the phone over three days!!!! Most people that I spoke to have no clue what Verizon Call Assistant is, much less getting info or placing order for it - Even though it is FREE and part of service if you like.
Verizon services turned up randomly over the past week - What happened to Your are now on Verizon and your service are ALL available!
Additional note - After holding for almost an hour to connect with a live person in the Verizon Call Assist group - I was advised that the email they offer for Voice Mail deposits Only Indicates that you have a voice mail and does not include any Caller ID info - Since this service is still not turned up I am expressing what I was told. This means I am back to the drawing board - I really need to know who called remotly (IE Black Berry etc) whether they left a VM or not. Time to start looking for a new phone company....
I'm sure I left out a few things here and there.
My frustration level is beyond belief and it's hard to put into words that are acceptable for a forum. @#$%#$%&$^#%^
I use Verizon Wireless and have for many years - They have been top notch so I thought the incumbent wireline provider (Verizon) would have its act together. Boy was I wrong.
I invite any and all responses especially any Verizon folks that really want to do something about these issues - I would be happy to discuss in detail any and all issues presented.
    Ren

Just a thought about Speed Dial -   even if there were some way to program in a pause I do not see how this would help you in dialing account numbers or pin numbers because the Speed Dial service does not actually produce call tones but simply enables the user to dial a stored phone number by pressing 1 or 2 digits instead of 10.

  • Slot-loading DV Display/HardDrive seize up

I am posting a conversation I have been having with a discussion board user, as I think it will be useful for others
On Fri, Feb 18, 2011 at 4:46 PM, <**@**.com> wrote:
    Hi Richard:
I've just been reading an exchange you had with someone named Graham in the UK about his iMac going black and becoming unresponsive. After a series of exchanges, you finished up (I think) with:
That can be a possibility. If it was the CPU temp that's causing this the entire logic board would have to have come loose or perhaps the conductive paste has dried out/failed, unlikely.
So upshot. In my experience the part that fails in these G3 iMacs is the PAV (The board you see when you look down from the top it's under the CRT and drives the monitor section. The logic board derives power from the PAV via down converter).
The shutting down is a classic symptom and the most irritating.
Others: No start - power light blinks or turns amber, video gets wonky - color shifts or size variations, sparks arcing sound, native screen is dark but external monitor works fine (not on option on your 350, no external spigot). This is why I've got 7 or so iMac G3s in my basement. Mostly 350s since I was given around 20 of them and I repaired and donated most into the inner city. The ones left have PAV problems.
    Wacky upgrade options:
I'm especially interested because here you mentioned the other main symptom I've noticed in my own version of the same problem: the "arcing sound" which I've been hearing almost from the start of my issues. Everything else almost mirrors his, except the time for the symptoms to kick in has reduced to less than 10 minutes.
I thought it might be the drive, so I've tried 2 different hd's, and it happens with both, and I tried running the iMac (400jhz slot loading) just off of CD, and it shut down then too!
Obviously, I've been inside the machine to replace the drives, with my teenage daughter's help (my eyes aren't so hot). I'm going to check for this OS X temperature software and see what it tells me. I did run a RAM checker, and it said it was all fine, so at least I know it's not that. I tried to get a version of Apple Hardware Checker for it (or whatever it's called) but it said the iMac DV would not run the software.
Do you still have those . . . PVA's? This machine is a perfect print server and backup hd and work stereo, and we have enjoyed tinkering with her in the past. If it wasn't TOO complex, I'd like to give it a try. I showed my daughter how to solder a battery cable onto a tester circuit board, so if that's the kind of thing we'd need to do, I'm game.
Let me know, and I'm looking for a temperature checker right now. Oh yea, and Tricia Helfer DOES look pretty hot.

    Hi Cary,

That arcing sound is almost always the flyback transformer. That is on the PAV board which is basically the entire upper half of the computer. Here's a site in England where you can download the Service Manual for your machine.
    http://www.macmanuals.co.uk/
So since you have a 400 MHz machine it's one of the more desirable machines since it has firewire. 400 to 700 had them. As I mentioned in my post I would pull the logic board and transfer it to a working 350. If you look in the manual swapping the board is simple. Then again around Chicago these G3 iMacs are sold for $25 or less. Don't know the situation where you are.
I used to repair these but they've become so cheap that the board swap is now my chosen path.

I guess this shhould've been on the discussion board so others could see it, but I'll just ask one more thing before looking into the manual:
Remember, I've swapped a harddrive and memory, but board changing is something I've never tried before:
So, are you saying that the PAv that might be creating these issues, being such a large part of the computer, should just be abandoned, and the logic board swapped into a 350 because of it's simplicity? Does the logic board contain the 400 mhz processor and firewire hookup, or would those be left behind on the 400 iMac's PAV board?
I'm looking at the manual, and you're right, pulling the logic board does look pretty simple, but I haven't found the answer to the above question yet, so I'll send it to you.
I emailed this to you because the original post a over a year old, and I wasn't sure you'd still be watching the discussion boards. Next time, I'll just 'trust to the boards', though I've only received 2/5 answers through it over the years.
    Thanks again.

    Carey,
So look at the pic I enclose. It's from the service manual.
So you've had the machine apart to this point, from here it's just the removal of the 10 screws to remove the logic board and down converter. They plug into the upper part via a couple of connectors. There could be a few plastic rivets that tie the board to the divider panel.
Does the logic board contain the 400 mhz processor and firewire hookup, or would those be left behind on the 400 iMac's PAV board?
That's all on the logic board.
Basically the iMac is a CRT display and speakers with a logic board underneath with the optical drive and the hard drive.
The board on top is called the PAV board ( power analog video) i. e. video power supply for a computer monitor. Power comes from that board and comes down to the "down converter" which changes it to logic board power, basically 12V and 5.5V DC. (These boards have been run "headless" but now not worth the trouble)
So your path from here will be determined by what kind of donor iMac you find. It must be a slot loader and the chances are it will be as fast or faster as your current machine.

Well, despite your own circumstances with blueberries and strawberries falling from the computer sky, I've gone on 4 different user forums and several different 'used things for sale' websites, and so far the closest I can come to getting a used imac is having one shipped from the next province (about 500 miles) for about 50-60 bucks, or possibly one in the city which the poster said they wanted 200 bucks for. I've had no reply to my email to them, yet.
Would you be willing to sell me one of those PAV boards, if they're still kicking around? I would think the shipping would be much less than the whole darned computer.
If you don't still have them in piles around you, I may just have to turf the iMac entirely for budgetary reasons.
I guess with the much smaller population, the proliferation of iMacs is similarly reduced. There's only about 3 million people in Alberta, which is where I am.
    Let me know.
Greatly appreciate the information connections you've made for me.

    Hey Carey,
Well I was forced to leave all of my iMac G3 parts with a recycler in Chicago when I moved.
I actually found one here in Pocatello (town of 60K) for $25 so maybe you can find the same thing. I don't have a PAV board and they are very hard to swap out, don't think I ever did it.
So, thinking a bit more about your situation, since you're using it as a server, when it fails does it absolutely freeze up? On the 400 you can attach a VGA monitor to the spigot under the perferated oval grill under the bottom rear. The monitors can fail in these and still produce power to run the logic board. Around here you can get a cheap LCD 15" monitor for around $25. A CRT type you can probably get for free. So if you're lucky it can still work that way.
There were people who ran a logic board headless, but most of these are out of date:
    Here's a few:

    http://www.cryogenius.com/hardware/imac/
a translation of the classic French mod:
    http://www.hardmac.com/articles/39/page1
Soo hopefully yours will fail and just the CRT will be involved.
    Here's hoping...

Perhaps one of your RAM modules has gone belly up. To test this, remove both RAM modules and start up. If the RAM is the cause of the problem, the computer will respond with a complaining chime, and of course go no further. But that will indicate the RAM is cause, and you can go to the next step; try to start up with just one of the RAM modules installed - either one. If that gets you nowhere, try the other one.
If the problem is not bad RAM, it is beyond my expertise to help. Sorry.

  • Plugging in iPod causes it to freeze (EVERY time)

I'm at my wit's end with this iPod.
I have a 60gig 5th Gen iPod Video, which worked absolutely fine and synced with my PC with no problems. Then a few months ago, I plugged my iPod into the PC and it loaded up the 'Do no disconnect' screen, then just froze. iTunes wouldn't recognise it, and no matter what I did (rebooted computer, unplugged iPod, etc etc) it just remained frozen on that screen. Rebooting by pressing the 'play' and 'center' buttons (which I'm quite used to doing, as it's often required me to do that just to turn it on ever since I bought it) does not work.
With any other product, there'd be a little 'reset' button you jab with the end of a pencil; but the iPod appears only to reset via the 'push and hold the play button and another button' method which - when it freezes like mine does - doesn't work. In order to reset it I am therefore forced to leave it on {I've no way of turning it off anyway} and leaving it until the battery drains. Once it's drained I plug it in and it seems ok, but the NEXT time I plug my iPod in it freezes and does the exact same thing again!
    Points to note:
    * A friend charged their iPod on my computer with my cable, and had no problems
    * If I plug the iPod in before opening iTunes, iTunes refuses to open.
    * I formatted my entire PC, and not even reinstalling Windows fixed this
    * When it's connected/disconnected, Windows makes that 'something's connected' noise.
    * When I've 'rebooted' by letting the battery drain, and temporarily got it syncing with iTunes successfully, I've done the "restore original settings" thing. But the problem still remains. I managed to make it do an 'iPod Diagnostics' thing, the results of which are as follows.
If anyone can offer ANY help at all, please please please do. I've just plugged it in for the umpteenth time just now and, yet again, it's frozen and iTunes is refusing to open.

i know exactly what you mean. I seem to be having the same problem with my 30gb iPod. Mine has the exact same symptoms too, Freezes when you plug it in, restoring to factory settings does not fix the problme, and I've also taken it in to an Apple Store to see if they could help and all they told me to do was to make a note of what programs are running when it happens and the manual reset (hold the center button and menu at the same time), however tonight I've had to reset it at least 3 times which is really telling me theres some sort of problem going on with it.
Do you get a message saying: Delayed Write Failed.....F:\iPodcontrolArtworkF10291.ithmb
because thats the message i get every time it freezes. Let me know if soomeone finds a solution to this problem. In the mean time, i'm just thankful my iPod's still under the limited 1 year warranty.

  • Cp4 Crashing on Startup

I went to launch Captivate today and it froze at the startup screen and the "send report to Microsoft?" message came up.  If I click Send Error Report or Don't Send, the message continues to pop up in an infinite loop.  The only way out is to end the Captivate process in Task Manager.
Captivate was working fine last week, I could create and publish to Adobe Connect with no issues.  I haven't changed anything since Friday.  When it gets stuck, the info on the startup screen shows it is copying First Run Files...
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I've got deadlines and am without my critical tool!

    Hi there
I suppose I would try this.  (Least invasive to most invasive)
(Least invasive) Locate and delete the Captivate settings file.
For Captivate 2, the file is named captivate_v20.dat
For Captivate 3, the file is named captivate_v30.dat
For Captivate 4, the file is named captivate_v40.dat
Here on my Windows XP PC mine are found in the following location:
    ?:\Documents and Settings\??\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Captivate
? = the drive letter (Mine is on D, but yours may be C
?? = your logged in user name
Just delete or rename the dat file and restart Captivate. When Captivate attempts to start, assuming all goes well, it will bake up a fresh one on the spot and may clear the issue.
(Most invasive) If the above fails, you may be forced to reinstall Captivate.
    Cheers... Rick

I wanted to take this opportunity to detail my experiences and frustrations with the Q10 and why I have decided to return to the Bold 9900.  I'd like to stress that these opinions are my own.  I recognize that the industry has a whole has embraced the touch screen concept.  But I believe this change isn't right for everyone as I hope to demonstrate below.
I am a very stanch supporter of the traditional Blackberry.  I work in IT for a nearly 2,000 user organization.  We have 36 IT people on staff and I am the only one still using a Blackberry.  I choose to remain with my Bold 9900 for the sole reason that it is the most efficient device I have ever used.  Every operation I'd ever want to perform with the device is only 2 or three physical clicks away and perhaps just as importantly, thanks to having physical buttons, those actions are performed in exactly the same way every time. It becomes muscle memory and can be performed regardless of the current state of the device.  When the Q10 was announced, you'd be hard pressed to find someone more excited then me.  I very much wanted this phone to succeed.
I have now been using the Q10 for a few days now and have encountered a number of what I personally consider show stopper functionality issues.  These are issues that I believe are not simply related to my lack of familiarity with touch screens but an issue innate to the touchscreen concept itself.  Some issues could be resolved through software updates while others simply cannot.
I have detailed a few of the more pressing frustrations I have below.
    - First and foremost, I use an application on the 9900 called "ShortcutMe" by Fonware.  This application allows you to write custom macros and assign them to any key on the keyboard.  This provides a massively increased efficiency.  From any application I'm in, I can press the same 3 physical buttons to have the phone launch anything I want (End Key to get to the main menu, space bar to activate shortcut me, the letter that matches up to the macro).  For example, I have macros to quickly launch the flashlight as well as more complex macros to automatically toggle between enabling and disabling Caller ID.  I decided to swtich devices when I discovered that Shortcutme now exists for OS10.  Immediately after purchasing it however I received an email from Fonware stating that Blackberry currently doesn't allow access to any of the API's required for the macro functionality to work.  They apologized.  Because of these closed APIs, I can no longer map all of the functions I use the phone to physical keys which completely negates one of the biggest benefits there are to having an always present physical keyboard
    - In messages, if you want to select "mark prior read" you can't because due to the nature of a touch screen, there is no concept of highlighting an object. A compromise exists where you click and hold on the date and then select "mark as read" from a popup menu that appears. However, this only appears to work for the start of each day. If you want to select all messages before a message in the middle of the day, you cannot. Additionally, the compromise forces you to select messages one at a time by tapping on them. I often receive bursts of automated alert messages that could be 30 or more messages in a row. With a track pad, I was able to quickly select just those messages mark them as read. I see no way of completing the same task as quickly with a touch screen
    - A purely touchscreen interface demands restraint on behalf of the developers when building UI elements to provide a consistent experience. For example when you hold the phone in your hand, your thumb naturally rests on the keyboard and is within reach of all the keys, and where the trackpad and physical keys were. It would also be within reach of the bottom right of the screen where the back button often -- but not always -- is. For example, if you scroll through your messages and select one to read, the back button is at the bottom of the screen in easy reach. However, if you now try to reply to a message, the cancel button (which performs the same operation as back) is now at the physical top of the screen which requires you to completely shift how you're holding the phone to reach.
    - Like all touchscreens, if your finger is slightly touching some other portion of the screen and you try to select an option, the phone doesn't respond until shift the phone in your hand so that you're so that you're only touching the button you intended.  This results in unintended actions that simply cannot occur with a non-touch screen device.
    - You can no longer access internal memory as a USB mass storage device. I wanted to copy a traditional telephone ring tone to the phone (because one is no longer included) but could not simply copy the file to the device through Windows Explorer. I had to insert my microSD card before this was possible.
    - Blackberry is not allowing apps to run in the background which means my two must have apps (Shortcutme and Bebuzz) don't work as intended. In the case of Bebuzz, you're forced to leave an active frame opened with it to function.
    - The applications shortcuts functionality no longer exists. For example, I can no longer press L to get to the calendar or hold K to lock the device.  Instead it searches the device.  On OS7, I could get to the same functionality by first pressing s.  However, it was much more common that I wanted to jump between applications so why this is not a toggleable option is beyond me.  (Admittedly, I do know why.  OS10 is a completely different code base which means all of the subtle optimizations made to the legacy code base no longer exist and they are starting from scratch.)
    - Memopad was replaced by Remember.  Memopad was by design a simple application that served only one purpose -- quickly make notes about something quickly.  Memopad was instant.  Blackberry Remember admittedly has many more features but those features come at a cost of efficiency and usability.  If these features were desired, they could have been made available in a separate app.  There is a reason that notepad exists on Windows despite almost all systems also shipping with Word or similar.  Also, when you do finally use the Remember application to enter text, you only get a tiny portion of the middle of the screen to actually see your entry.  On the Bold 9900, you can see 12 lines of text. In remember, that is reduced to just 5.
    - It is possible to use every function of the Bold 9900 with one hand thanks to the trackpad.  This is far more difficult with the Q10.  For example, try selecting and copying text that exists at the top of the screen on the Q10 with one hand.
    - Playing solitaire and other card games on the Bold 9900 is simple enough to do and can be done with one hand and with little physical motion.  Trying to play Solitaire on the Q10 is more cumbersome as it requires two hands in order to comfortably reach both sides of the screen.  You also end up blocking the card you are trying to select with your finger.  This may seem like a more esoteric example but its representative of the kinds of issues you have when trying to use a touch only interface
I could go on but I think it's clear where my frustrations lie.  Blackberry has decided to abandon their most distinguishing competitive edge (the keyboard) and instead embrace the touch screen concept just like everyone else.  And that is a shame.
If anyone shares any of these frustrations, please reply to this message and share your experiences.  I'm curious if I am as unique in my opinions as it sometimes feels like.
    Thanks
    - Robert Vance

    Hi Robert,
I have a similar background and thought process as yourself. I have been a die hard Blackberry guy. I have had
    (2) 8250's (with the side roller)
    (2) 8330 Curve
    8900 Torch
    (3) Playbook's
    My kids (2) 9360 Curve
    9900 Bold
Tried the Z10 and now the Q10.
I am normally very patient with technology. My rule is that I do not use the device until I have read the ENTIRE manual before I use it for the first time.
After using the Z10 for 2 weeks and the Q10 for a week, I will be going to a Samsung Galaxy S4. I am incredbily frustrated and not even sure that the S4 is the right solution.
Nothing can beat the track pad for efficency. My 9900 is simply bogging under the pressure of my use (over 5000 contacts and hundreds of pages of notes). I even deleted everything I can off the 9900 to make it last as long as I could.
The Q10 simply lacks the refinement we were promised. At it's core, it is not effecient and I cannot see how they will make it better. Calendar additions used to be 2 clicks, now it is 5 and I have to wait for things to load. On top of that, my bridge does not work properly (no contacts, no email, no calendar, no notes).....what is the point?
Here is what I cannot do well or at all
    Select specific text
back out of certain areas without closing the app and going back in
Easily tell what email address I am sending from (I have 5 address for various reasons)
Shorcuts (that might just be me not doing enough research)
Easy notes (although I did find an app, but it will not hook up with my Outlook)
    Google Maps
    Enter Calendar events quickly
Mark multiple messages read or unread
Turn my phone off and have the alarm go off in the morning (Bedside mode is the new "OFF")
Entering Bedside mode is not easy (That I have found)
While I am on the subject of the Playbook, it has become very slow and almost unusable. Even something as simple as bringing up the keyboard or turning down the volume has a huge delay.
I have even developed and built a company on using the Playbook, but am now thinking of abandoning the entire platform....I live near Waterloo (the home of Blackberry).
I am VERY frustrated and do not know what to do. I feel like I cannot go back to the 9900 due to the slow downs and lock ups that I was experiencing. I WILL NOT go to iPhone (my kids have had several iDevices), my only choice seems to be the S4......

  • "CoreServicesUIAgent.app" would like to access your calendar. What do I do with THAT?

This morning I see a pop-up that says, "CoreServicesUIAgent.app" would like to access your calendar" with choices of "Don't Allow" or "OK." I have no idea how to choose since I don't know what that is and where it came from. Now I feel forced to leave it on my screen until I find out, since I can't find the solution in any forum discussions search here. If it's really from Apple, then they should probably at LEAST give us a hint as to the meaning and validity of this obscure thing in their  software. Not intuitive at all.

Thanks, I'd done that before coming to Apple and didn't receive any additional information about whether it's safe to choose "Don't Allow" or "OK". I don't know what I'm in for if I choose either one. Can't afford to lose that calendar. I depend on it too much.

  • How to get clips to appear in good quality when editing?

I worked with PE over a decade ago when I had a PC.  In 2008 I migrated to Apple -- specifcally desktop Intel duo-processor Mac, OS X Snow Lion 10.6.8.  So regretably I was forced to leave PE behind and begin using Final Cut Express 4.0.1.   Recently I bought a new HD camera so I thought it was a good time to return to PE 11 since the program is now being made for Macs too.  (I had missed the Organizer tremendously!)  Before working with my new camera however, I could not resist importing some old standard definition clips into a timeline to play around with.  Well they look horrible in the viewer -- all pixelated and poor quality!  I selected the clips, pressed render and nothing happened.  I am used to automatic rendering when editing in FCE so that what you see in the viewer is what you get, of course unless you run into compression issues later on.  But I need to see what I'm editing and can't do that with this poor quality.  So what is the problem?   The clips are all in .mp4 or .mov format.  The .mp4 clips were shot with a Panasonic SDR-H85P in that format and the .mov clip was converted from DV footage on a tape recorded with a Canon ZR900.
Also, I am used to seeing and working on a minutia level -- sometimes frame by frame with a "blade" tool in FCE.  I switched to expert view but still can't tell where 1 frame ends and another begins.  Is there an easy way to do that?
    Thanks!

Thank you for your helpful answer.   Regarding frame view, I found the  options you indicated.  However, I think my issue has more to do with  "timeline view" if you will.   For example, in Final Cut, you could  press "option +" several times to "lengthen" the timeline which in turn  would "stretch" out each frame to an extent necessary to make really  precise edits on a minutia scale.  Then in order to "compress" it so you  could see the entire timeline on the computer screen, pressing "option  -" several times would bring it back down to that size which was handy  for seeing exactly where all your other effects on other timelines were  arranged.  Does that make sense?  Is there a way to do that in PE 11?    It's zooming in and  out of the timeline essentially in order to see  more of the detail while editing.
Regarding  the poor quality of playback, I was able to correct the problem by  setting the playback settings to "highest."  That was a relief.   Also  the clip properties did match the project properties, but if I had  wanted to change project properties, I don't think I could have because  so many of the options remained blanked out or unavailable -- all light  in color not allowing me to access them.  Don't know what the term for  that is but you probably know what I mean.  So does that mean that  project properties are always automatically determined or must they be  preset somehow?  Any direction on that issue would be helpfui because I  also work with infrared clips a lot from a Bushnell camcorder and often  combine those with regular video clips.  What is going to happen then?   Again, thanks so much for your help!

I subscribe to my video podcasts but some of them either has a small red E next to them and won't download new content or some just doesn't download new content. I have been watching the Rachael Maddow video podcast for at least a month with no problems. Now suddenly it won't download the last nights show. I have read and followed all troubleshoot and cannot find a solution. I have unsubscribed and re-subscribed to no avail. Can someone help me with this problem?

And now that my contract has expired, I have some options.  Last weekend, I called Verizon again threatening to leave.  The representative offered the same $75 rebate that was offered to me 6 months earlier.  I even offered up one of my device upgrades in place of a network extender, but that deal was knocked down.  And so now I’m left with the option to make a public spectacle out of this scenario and hope Verizon takes notice.  Failing that, I’ll be forced to leave Verizon behind.
I don't understand. If having service in your home IS important to you and you already know Verizon's policy, why have you not instead started to search for carriers which cover your home? It seems a pretty easy decision to me, at least.

  • 990fxa-gd80 resume issue

Hello, i hope someone among you good guys can help me with a very annoying issue i am experiencing in my system, that is driving me mad and that i could not solve in a month of tries. I own an HTPC based on the following configuration:
AMD Phenom II X4 945 CPU
    MSI 990FXA-GD80 M/B
    8Gb Corsair XMS3 DDR (2x4Gb)
    Corsair AX-650 PSU
Samsung 256Gb 830 SATA SSD (2 partitions, system + data), AHCI SATA mode
Seagate 3Tb Barracuda SATA HDD with GPT table
ATI HD 5750 video card (2 displays attached)
    Terratec Cinergy DVB-S2 card
    Hauppauge HVR-2200 DVB-T card
Silverstone LC-16m case with Imon VFD + Imon Pad remote and USB card reader
Internal serial port, 1394 and eSATA ports enabled
Logitech USB Webcam, USB speakers and USB G110 illuminated keyboard
    Toshiba laser mouse
Windows 7 x64 sp1, windows Media Center + DVBLink TV source, MST and various other programs.
    Hibernation disabled
    No overclok
I used this HTPC with much satisfaction from nearly 1 year, never experiencing an issue: i used to keep it in S3 mode 24/7 and it always got out from S3 state to record TV programs without any problem.
I installed the second drive, the 3Tb Seagate Barracuda, the first week of september. Then a day between the firsts of october i installed Mediaportal to give it a try; fearing system modifications by that software, i saved a backup image in my second drive. After a pair of days (or maybe at that time i noticed it for the first time), the issue has started.
The issue consists in a strange system freeze when the HTPC tries to wake up from S3: when the HTPC tries to exit S3 state the case led gets on, the HDD led blinks once or twice and then fans start running loudly and the HTPC freezes BEFORE the display can show any image (it remains black and goes to power saving mode) - power led on and HDD led off. No blue screen (the display is off). No memory dump. Keyboard's leds off. No manual crash dump possible. All i can do is keep power switch pressed until system complete shutdown.
But the really strange thing is that it happens ONLY once or twice a day, in the rest of the times the HTPC gets to wake up from S3 normally without any issue: it usually wakes up from S3 a number of times per day (7/8 minimum), but only 1/2 times the freeze issue happens (more often early in the morning or around twilight, seldom in other time slots)... Also, when on, the HTPC runs flawlessly as ever.
Thinking MP was guilty in some way, i restored the backup image but unfortunately the issue didn't disappear! So MP was no to blame... something different had happened to my PC...
I think you can understand that such an issue is really serious for an HTPC, because it makes it really untrustable for scheduled recording work: often recordings fail because of the HTPC freezing when it tries to resume... my wife is really sad about it...
Trying to solve the issue, i made the following:
running memtest and video card memory test - no error found
change nearly every MST options - no effect
reading carefully W7's event viewer logs after and between freezes - nothing found that could clarify the issue
changing all ACPI and power related BIOS options (C3 support, EUR 2013, CPU phases, DDR phases, shadowing, etc...) - no effect
updating BIOS and all drivers - no effect
    disabling cool'n'quiet - no effect
unplugging Segate 3Tb HDD - no effect
unplugging all external and internal USB devices (except mouse) - no effect
uninstalling ATI video card and running with legacy drivers - no effect
disabling embedded Ethernet adapter - no effect
unplugging the second display (an HDTV) - no effect
tried to get a manual crash dump - not possible as when the issue happens the HTPC is freezed
Those tries took very long to be made, because every time i have to wait all day long for the issue to happen: it NEVER takes place if i wake up the HTPC after a few seconds sleep, seems like it needs at least a few hours of S3 state to take place.
Now, many particulars of the issue seem to lead to a compatibility problem between PSU and motherboard: i read about other users experiencing similar problems using high-end PSUs (min load related?), problems they solved by finding older or cheaper PSUs compatible with their MB (that's a blind try thing, luck was needed)... but in all cases PSU functioning was not bad, so no RMA was possible. Anyway, it is obvious that changing MB solved the issue as well... so Corsair support states it is not a PSU issue but a MB related one.
This seems to be a frequent problem for intel z68 based MBs, but i suspect my 990fxa MB can show the same compatibility issue with Corsair AX PSU, assuming some power related modification has happened in the last month in PSU or MB circuitry.
So i would like to know if someone else is/is not experiencing the same issue using same MB and PSU; more, i would like to know what 80+ PSU is SURELY working flawlessly with my MB, in case i should have to solve the issue by replacing the Corsair PSU (that is manufactured by Seasonic); finally, i would like to ask MSI technicians to verify the issue and possibly working around it with a BIOS update (maybe raising resume initial load, if PSU min load is to blame).
    Thanks in advance.

Even with AMD power reduction, consumption while on is nearly ten times than in standby... it happens me to leave my PC in S3 for 3/4 days, so power consumption would be too much (i write from Italy and here AC current is much expensive!).
Anyway, i took a more accurate look around about PSU/MB incompatibility and i'm now sure enough that this is the problem. It seems certain MBs in power saving modes (like S3) require a too low power from PSU, so that PSU min load is not achieved, that makes it malfunction. This happens to new, energy efficient PSUs, that eliminate minimum load resistors to achieve maximum efficiency...
    Look at this: http://www.silentpcreview.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=58802.
So this issues happen because MB is too efficient (it requires too low power from PSU) and PSU is too efficient itself (it eliminates power used to remain above min load in power saving). Is this true? It seems ridicolous to me!!!!!!! To save a couple of watts we are forced to leave PC on so wasting dozens of watts? Are PC engineers really dummies?
BUT it looks like this can easily be solved by a BIOS adjustment, isn't it?

  • Safari 5 crashes on and on (snow l. 10.6.6)

    Hi friends,
Safari crashes for months now on and on.
Rest of my machine and other applications are very stable.
It is always Safari that crashes. Not after booting, ALWAYS after some time of usage.
    Details in following crash log.
I installed my system twice now. And the problem comes back again. Even system updates didn't help!!!
I deleted cache and preferences several times. Problem began shortly after update from the original installation 10.6.2 (?)
    What happens before the crash:
One of my habits is to collect a larger number of tabs.
Crashes happen often (not always) when I want to save tabs or want to go to another tab.
Then the spinning ball tends to come and - after a long while/not immediately - Safari crashes and disappears.
Crash log contains ALWAYS within the crashed Thread these details:

    Hello Carolyn and other helpful,
unfortunately update & removal of foreign code didn't solve the problem:
Safari crashes again and again I find a "dispatch que"-problem
No ideas what "MDQuery ... MDUpdate" does or mean?
In ALL my crashes I find these hints/abreviations in the Crashed Thread.
I regret not to be a programmer, but I wonder about these part which is ALWAYS logged in my crash reports.
As you'll remark I updated all relevant parts of my system and removed all enhancers, - as far as I recognize.
    Any help/solution???
Otherwise I'm forced to leave Safari now...
Is there another browser, which supports Quicklook ???
By the time: the rest of my system is very stable, really.
    The full log:

  • Master Slide - Likert - Error shown in picture

I'm currently, creating a new master slide. I'm changing the positions of quiz slide elements in all 3 views. I used the blank theme as the base and then started making changes to the master slide. All quiz slides are working perfectly except one. Problem is with likert slide in the master slides. When working in the primary view, there isn't any problem. Moment i switch to tablet view, the following happens.
I have tried to remove the multiple items but there seems to be no way for it. Also, it heavily slows captivate and I'm forced to restart captivate. But the multiple entries still persist. Again when I try to do changes the likert master slide, captivate slows down.
Possible solution I have tried already: I have already deleted this slide and copy pasted a new likert slide from a new project with blank theme. Again, everything works as long as I stick with the primary view. Moment, I click on the tablet view, the multiple entries appear and the same cycle again.
Has anyone got any clue as to why this is happening only with likert slide? How can I avoid it? Thanks in advance for your time.

RodWard, I think maybe I should have provided more context and also I think the picture isnt too clear.
I did not add extra questions at all. The only ones I want are the 2 default items which appear in larger font.
The remaining are all the exact same phrase of item one which is "Type item 1 here" in mobile view font type. This is repeated again and again and there seems to be no way to remove it.
Let me add the exact look I have in primary here before I switch to the tablet view.
Now when I click on the tablet view, the following happens.
Again if I go to primary view, the following happens.
Next when I click on mobile view.
Now at this point, the software gets sluggish. So I restart and go to master slide view and select the Likert Slide again. This is what is see.
Obviously, this view isnt looking good. So If i start editing and if I go between the views, its the whole story all over again. Sorry for the elaborate steps but I just wanted to make it clear.
