Forced to manually manage songs in iTunes

I got a new Macbook a couple days ago and transferred all of my music onto it. I plugged my iPod, which was previously synced up to my old PC, into my new Mac and it comes up in iTunes with the 'Manage songs manually...' option already checked. If I uncheck this it prompts me to restore my iPod and sync the whole library from scratch, which I don't mind, except that I've plugged it in twice now and it's done that both times. I don't mind having to manage my libary manually but I'd really like it if it just did it automatically and didn't do the 'restore/sync entire library' thing every single time. Is there a way to 'pair' my iPod with my new Mac that I'm just not seeing? Any help is appreciated. All software is the latest versions. (Forgive me if this is the wrong forum for this, I wasn't sure if this belonged in the 'iPod' discussion or the 'iTunes' one.)

I also have the same problem.
I have written multiple comments to this post, explaining why I am also having a problem with the new iTunes removing manual control of Contacts and being forced to only use iCloud but apple keeps removing the posts because they don't want to address the issues.

  • IPod Nano appears on my list of iTunes devices. Summary tab shows 928 manually managed songs; music tab however shows nothing. Where did the songs go?

I recently undated software all around, reloaded windows 8 and upgraded to windows 8.1.  My iPod Nano (1.0.4) appears on my list of iTunes (11.1.3) devices. The summary tab for my iPod shows 928 manually managed songs (2 of 8 GBs still empty).  However, when I click on the music tab immediately to the right of the summary tab, iTunes no longer shows my songs, playlists or audio books.  Instead iTunes invites me to "sync" my iPod and kiss my contents goodbye. Why won't the songs appear in iTunes anymore?  My iPod still plays the songs and they appear on the tiny iPod screen.   iTunes however won't show them. iTunes still allows me to drag and drop new music and books into my iPod but iTunes won't let me see the particulars.  I want to delete some audio books I've finished but iTunes won't let me to them.  What gives?

Thanks iPodmaven for showing me how to check the arrow to the right of the device image and convert it into a inverted triangle.  Problem solved!  Thanks

  • Manually manage songs and video (ITUNES)

How can I manually manage songs into my iPhone 4 whitout sync. ? If I check the case, it ask me to sync. overything with the "new" list when I "Apply" ... I don't want to sync. because there's no song on my cumputer , only on my iphone so I don't want to loose anything but I want to put manually songs and videos on it ! I'm using the last version of Itunes, iOS and Windows 7 !

Connect your Device to Computer. Select your iPhone under "Devices" on the left Pane.
On the right Pane, under "Summary" tab, make sure "Manually manage Music and videos" box is checked. Then click the APPLY button on the lower right Window.
Now you can drag songs onto your iphone without using the Sync.

  • Updating and iPod that has preferences set for "manually manage songs..."

I have my iPod set with "manually manage songs and playlists" so that
    (a) it won't try to update every time I connect it; and
    (b) so that I can see all of the songs from my iTunes application, as I don't store my music library on my laptop computer.
But sometimes I do want to do a full sync of the iPod to my music library. I'm not sure how to do that. If I select "update ipod", it says "iPod update complete", but doesn't really do anything.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

Hi, Michael, and thanks for your help.
I realize I can change the options to "automatically update..."
But the whole point of my inquiry was to find out whether there's a way to NOT have that preference set, as I
    (a) don't want the iPod updating every time I plug it in; and
    (b) want to be able to see its songs on other computers when I'm not seeking to update it.
What I want is a command that I can initiate that will say "act as though the automatically-update preferences were on and do a full update just this once".
I suppose I can go in and turn the preference on, do the update, then turn the update off, but it seems like lots of steps. I might have thought that there would be a control+click command that would accomplish this all in one click.

  • What is manually manage songs and playlist?

I had some issues earlier and it seems to be resolved now,but in the process it had me set the IPod to manually manage songs and playlist. I want to close ITunes now and go to bed but I don't know how to exit ITUnes without losig my music. I used to click sync IPod and put a check mark next to the song I wanted loaded to the Ipod and when it was over I would take the check mark off,but now what do I do?

By default the iPod is set to "automatically manage songs and videos", whatever changes you make in iTunes are reflected on the iPod the next time you connect it. In manual mode you can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from your library: Managing content manually on iPod
Something to remember about using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on the desktop and check this link for alternative methods:: Safely Disconnect IPod

I need some help to be able to manage manually my songs without sync first !

a very good explanation given by the great wjosten
By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from her phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you are replacing your GF's computer, her phone will see this computer as a "new" computer. The itunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to her phone or music ripped on her own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from her phone using third party software, before you do anything else, as Apple makes no provision to do so:
    http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:
    1. Disable auto sync when an iPod/iPhone is connected under Preferences>Devices in itunes(under the edit menu if using Windows).
    2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in the supported applications(Address Book, iCal) on your computer. These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
    3. Connect her phone, iTunes running, do not sync at this point.
    4. Store>Authorize this computer.
    5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on her phone will be in her itunes library).
    6. Right click in the device pane & select reset warnings.
    7. Right click again and select backup.
    8. Right click again & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
    9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore her itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding her contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.
You should be good to go.

  • Manually Managing Songs

I've got the previous iPod Shuffle, and whenever I connect it to a different computer, all my songs on my ipod are deleted and replaced with the songs on the computer on which the ipod is connected to. i tried the ipod help, and it says i should select the "manually manage songs and playlists" option in my ipod options. the problem is that i cant seem to find that " " option anywhere! Please help.

You can't load music from multiple computers or iTunes libraries onto an iPod Shuffle like you can with other iPods. The Shuffle doesn't have the full manual option the larger iPods have which allows them to operate on multiple computers iPod Shuffle FAQ

No, I do not mean just the music.  Copying just the media/music files or the media folder creates problems.

  • HT1399 Can I manually select songs from iTunes? If so, how?

Can I manually select songs from Itunes? If so, how?

I have the iPhone 5. When I plug my phone into iTunes to select different songs, as my libraray is too large to keep it all on my phone. The only choices that iTunes gives you now is Artists, Genres, etc. I don't see the ability to just select song for song, like the older version of iTunes. Which in my opinion, was way more user friendly.

No backup? Never a good idea to not maintain a backup of your important data. If you do not have a backup, follow these instructions:
By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. 3. Connect your phone, itunes running, do not sync at this point.
    4. Store>Authorize this computer.
    5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on your phone will be in your itunes library).

    9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore your itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding your contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.
That's as good as it gets without a backup of your itunes library and other important data..

  • Best ways to manually manage songs and other media between iTunes and iPod?

I have a Video iPod (60 GB) and I connect it to two computers, with all my songs being on one of them (my Desktop). Since I connect to two, I have my iPod set to manually manage. My question is, is there any way for me to tell in iTunes what songs I have in iTunes but not on the iPod? If I could see that, it would make manually managing the iPod much easier. If this is available, could someone let me know how? If it is NOT available, are there other strategies people have used to make sure they are aware of what is on the iPod and what is not?
    Thanks in advance,

I appreciate your help but I don't think you've read my message totally because I know that there should be a button where you can set it manually, but I strangely I don't have that kind of button (see: http://www.youruploadservice.be/uploads/iPod.JPG) Is it because I don't have a Mac? Because I'm sure I have the latest version of iTunes. Could you pls help?
