Forced Win 8.1 Upgrade - Display Dimmed (10%) on Lenovo Z500 Laptop

As you know - Microsoft forced the 8.1 upgrade on 8.0 users. The Lenovo Z500 laptop has a display problem (dim lit monitor) once 8.1 installed. There appears to be no firmware / software fix - so what is the solution ? In the event there is a hardware swap
or another alternative, please let your customers know. Do not compromise your Goodwill, maybe your legal staff should have a talk with Microsoft. Microsoft compromised Lenovo Customers by forcing the 8.1 Upgrade. As others, one day it downloaded and installed
on its own without user intervention. Now I have a laptop that is so dim, it is no longer functional for me. Trade-In Options ?
Or Microsoft Operating System Fix ?

Look at britishdez link, it says:

  • Can You Upgrade the Processor in a Lenovo B570 Laptop?

I've gotten all sorts of mixed answers, so I'm going to ask directly here at Lenovo: Can I upgrade my B570 from a Pentium B950 2.10GHz Dual core? And if so, what processors are compatible with my motherboard?

I did it! I didn't think it was possible! I sucessfully upgraded my B570 from an intel core i3 2350m to a core i7 2720m. Even though one is 35 watt and the other is 45 watt, it still worked. The i7 is running hotter but nothing horribly bad.  50C to near 70 C.  I followed a take apart youtube video. It's sort of complex because the CPU is on the upper side of the motherboard. I only had 1 screw left over!! YAY!  Everything appears to be working fine. My WIFI wasn't working at first but I went back in and reset the bios to default settings and reset comptuer and bam now it's working.  The speed increase wasn't at all what I had expected.  I just upgraded my ram from 4 GB to 8 GB a few days back and that actually provided the biggest speed boost of all.
So it CAN be DONE as long as you get a core i3, i5, i7 series that starts with a 2*** (sandy bridge). I also used the long parts manual provided by lenovo in order to find a chip compatable with my b570 system. They list a number of chips. I bought the next to the most fastest they had listed because the price ot the BEST one just wasn't worth the cost.
    AGAIN...it does WORK!

  • T530 Win 8 64 w Intel HD Graphics 4000 display 'dims'

I have a problem that is similar to others listed in the forums but the listed solutions either don't apply or don't work for me.
    Configuration:
    T530 2394CTO
    Windows 8 64 bit
    Bios G4ET96ww (2.56)
    Issue:
When the screen is largely dark, the display 'dims'. I have a dark desktop image so, for instance, if I minimize active windows, the display dims. The brightness setting is not changing so on the brightness setting it still shows full brightness. When I then switch to a mostly white window it then takes maybe 4 or 5 seconds for the white to change from off-white to bright white. As long as there is significant portion of the built-in screen that is light colored it stays that way. As soon as the majority of the screen is 'dark' it dims again.
It is not the Intel HD Graphics Drivers as suggested here.
If I check the drivers with Lenovo System Update they show as up to date. There is a more recent version on the Intel site but if I try to install it it says my computer does not meet the requirements.
It is not the adaptive brightness settings as suggested here and here.
On my version this setting does not show up in the Intel Graphics and Media control panel but there is a setting in the advanced power plan settings and I have disabled the adaptive brightness there.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Dali99GRT,
I see you have several questions today. I will do my best to help you with them.
The difference between an Integrated and a Dedicated Graphics card are as follows: (information from Top Ten Reviews)
    Integrated
An integrated graphics processing unit (GPU) doesn't use its own RAM; it utilizes the system's memory instead. So, if you have a computer with 4GB of RAM, the video card can use anywhere between one and five percent of the available memory for graphics processing. Of course, this percentage varies depending on the size of the task, especially if you're multitasking or playing a game.
    Dedicated
A dedicated, or discrete, GPU has its own independent source of video memory, leaving the RAM your system uses untouched. If you have a GeForce GTX 680M video card with 2GB of video memory, for example, that memory is completely separate from your computer's 8GB of system memory. Dedicated cards are perfect if you are into serious gaming or are a professional graphic designer.
As for the Approx. Total Memory this is the video memory of your graphics card. Your Intel Graphics card, is an integrated graphics card, that is most likely shared memory. This means some of the video memory is taken from your RAM or system memory. That being said, Windows 8.1 may not use as much of the video Graphics to run as Windows 7 does.
And the detailed information for the External VGA card, I am at a loss. Your best bet is to check out some websites like Amazon or CNET for this. I did find this information on How good are USB video cards? that may help you with your decision making.
I hope this information helps, please let me know.
Thank you and I hope you have a great day!

  • Display Dims before boot and after shutdown are complete

This is probably a stupid question but a while back I clicked on an option to have my display dim during the shutdown process and stay dim until it was completely booted.
I would like to turn this off but I can't find where the option was.  I've checked the device manager, BIOS, standard and advanced display settings the Windows and lenovo power settings with no luck.
I have a thinkpad W500 running Windows 7 Pro 4gb of ram with a recent upgrade in hard drive to a 750 gb WD black series drive.  I am also running IE9 which I see has some compatibility issues so I hope I can post this.

  • Win 8.1 Upgrade Disabled Twist Touch Screen Fixed

After a Win 8.1 Upgrade, I had no touch screen function. Calls to Lenovo led nowhere Same with searching Microsoft boards. I fixed the issue on Sunday 6/1- No help from Lenovo or Microsoft.
For me it was finding two "Unknown Devices" in the HID section of Device Manager which did not have drivers installed. After researching and determining that Win 8.1 will not allow unsigned device drivers, and also seeing the "Update Driver" option failing because the drivers on the laptop that fit the problem were getting an 'INF unsigned driver error', I went through the steps to allow unsigned drivers... Charm Bar>Settings>Change PC Settings>Update and Recovery>Recovery>Advanced Startup>-Restart> Troubleshoot>Advanced Options>Startup Settings> Restart and then Chose #7>Allow Unsigned Device Drivers and Restart again... then Updating the two Unknown Devices with the drivers already on the Twist.... and voila- the errors disappeared and the touchscreen returned to full function.
I don't know if this happened to many people, but Lenovo had no idea what to do. They wanted me to ship them the laptop and allow them to roll it back to Windows 8. Posting here to distribute it to a larger audience. Maybe someone at Microsoft should call Lenovo too or Lenovo should call Microsoft. The Twist is a great laptop with Win 8.1 when everything works the way it should.

    Hi Cvj17,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per your query we understood that you are looking driver for Unknown device. In some system after installing all the drivers also the unknown device will show in Lenovo Solution Center, hence confirm it once in device manage is there any Unknown adapter is showing in that.
Please install Lenovo System Update application and run it to verify the driver automatically.
    Unknown Device issue.
    Hope this helps.

  • Cannot get to dual-boot screen after Win 8.1 upgrade

    Hello,
I have an iMac with Mavericks. Recently installed Win 8 to dual-boot. Instrux then were to hold OPT button during startup to be presented with options for OS with which to boot.
Since Win 8.1 upgrade there is no way to get to that prompt. MS/Win help topics not useful (unsurprisingly). I have the original install disk but would far prefer to save my current config of Mav. Thoughts for workaround?
    Cheers,
    Michael C

holding down option key at bootup not giving you the bootmenu have nothing to do with win8.1
even if one never installed anything in terms bootcamp at all then holding down the option key should give the option between osx and the restore to last clean osx version
if you don't get the option then I'd say the cause is not windows as the menu is handled by the bootloader which is before windows takes over

  • ThinkVantage Active Protection System Dissapeared after Win 8.1 Upgrade

The ThinkVantage Active Protection System dissapeared from my ThinkPads after upgrading to Win 8.1.
I was going to reinstall it from the Lenovo ThinkVantage page but the Win 8 64bit version is not available for download.
Oddly enough, the 32bit version is available.
Is this a temporary situation?  Will there be a Win 8.1 version?
Can someone from Lenovo explain what to expect?

  • Display dims with no reasonlem occuring, then for no reason I can thihnk of

I have a 21" G5 imac. the problem is my display dims for no reason. This is an intermitant problem. I can go for long periods with out the problem then for no reason it will do it again.
It now dims after about 3 minutes starting up the computer. It does not go blank, just dims somewhat, but because I use the computer to edit photos in Photoshop it makes it unusable for photo work.
I got the computer in the Summer of 2005 and it was doing it while under warranty but since it was very infrequent I did not report the problem to Apple care. Of course it is now out of warranty.
Any ideas of what is causing the problem, and what to do?
    Thanks in advance.

I have a similar problem. The screen will intermittently just go dim. I also decided not to give the machine up for warranty service because it comes and goes. The screen setting always says it is at full brightness. I installed a temperature monitor program, and it seems to be heat related. If I leave the computer sit for a while and the screen to turn off, when I come back it is back to normal. I found that if I put the iMac to sleep, it would re-brighten immediately on waking up. But now the machine usually turns off if I put it to sleep, so I have quit doing that....

  • X230T display dims after BIOS start

MY X230T was originally supplied with Windows 7 Pro. Apparently as a result of twiddling with the power management options on that platform, the display dims significantly between starting the BIOS and logging in to Windows. Specifically: 1. The BIOS screens are displayed at normal brightness 2. The screen then dims to a very low level while Windows loads. The hotkeys are not active at this time. 3. Under Windows 7, the login screen would remain dim until I pressed a key, or clicked on the screen with the mouse. Under Windows 8, the "lock screen" is already displayed at full brightness. This would not be a big deal, except that when booting another OS from a CD (e.g. Clonezilla Live), the display can remain dim, which makes the SW very difficult to use. Needless to say, the hotkeys also do not work under such foreign OSs. I have moved on to Windows 8 as a result of problems with VSS and can no longer find any such power options, either in the BIOS settings, the Windows Power Options or the Power Management settings in the Lenovo Settings metro app. How can I get the display brightness to remain constant during startup?
    X320T running Windows 8 Pro x64

Hey, I have same or similar problems with graphic card on same notebook (P200D 12O PSPBQE):
Some times, hard to define, probably when computer is connected to the electricity and used for some hours, a strange effect occurs: the background, strangely without the active window looks like it has reduced number of colors to like 16. Maybe 'without active window' means that only certain ranges of colors are affected and mainly white active window is not because of it's white color, just a theory for now.
The problem is solved either by restarting or by unplugging the power cable. Unplugging the power cable from the computer causes serious not-very-healthy-looking flickering of the screen which after few seconds becomes black and then recovers back to normal. After such recovery, the Vista says something like: the dispaly driver or hardware recovered from serious error. And then the colors are ok again.
I suspect that in my case the problem is caused by electricity disturbance, probably caused by the older refrigerator, because every time I notice this problem, the refrigerator is on. Or precisely true: I have never seen the problem when refrigerator was not working, at least ofr now. I plugged the computer on other end of appartment, electricaly farther away from refrigerator and on another fuse, but the problem still occurs, but less frequently, I think. I will try to take picture of the problem.
Quite strange problem, probably hard to present to the people who sold me the computer. Maybe the pictures of the problem will help.

  • New macbook pro display dims in and out

I just got my new macbook pro a few weeks ago. The display dims in and out at times, why does this happen? What can I do to fix it? I really don't wanna replace it already or what not.

    Welcome to the Forums!
Most likely the ambient light sensor - the system is set to automatically adjust brightness based on changing light conditions. You can test this out - put your hands over both speakers and your display should dim quite a bit. To turn this feature off, go to System Preferences > Displays > Display tab and UNcheck the box for Automatically adjust brightness.

  • Changing display dim

    Hi guys.
I have arch running on my laptop with gnome3.
The display is dimmed after few seconds that I'm not active. Very often, I'm reading text or staring my code on my machine and this is annoying. Power management doesn't have any option to cancel this.
    How can I manipulate this?

Check out Settings -> Screen and uncheck dimming.
Although it didnt work for me :
I personnally chose tu use laptop-mode-tools (see wiki) on my T420 to control the brightness. It works nicely BUT and here is the thing: Gnome keeps dimming my brightness anyway even if I unchecked this. In dconf-editor under org.gnome.powermanager there is no option.
I do remember Gnome 3.0 having options in dconf-editor to deactivate display dimming and leave it to hardware.
Sorry for not being able to help. I actually wanted to post a thread about this but I saw yours and it seemed related.

  • MBP display dims slightly off while reading article....???

    Hi all,
I have done a lot of research in this discussion, but couldn't find the resolution. The MBP display always dims slightly off while not in use for 1 minute. If I check off the setting in the Energy Saver/Option/"Automatically reduce the brightness.....", then display dims off completely (dark...)!! It's very annoying since ever time when I read an article without moving mouse for 1 minute, then the display dims off slightly. I have to keep moving the mouse so it doesn't dim off.
Does anyone have the same issue? Does anyone find any resolution?? I talked to the Genius guy and they said they don't know what to do about it....
    Thanks in advance.

Okay okay, I see what you're saying... I thought you were saying it goes off and doesn't come back on or something.
Anyways, this is normal behavior but it can be prevented. Go to energy saver preference panel. For both battery and adaptor, slide the "put displays to sleep after" slider all the way to the right, which is never. Make sure also under the options tab, that you uncheck the "reduce brightness..." box.

  • Display dimming buttons don't function on wireless keyboard.

Display dimming buttons do not function on the wireless keyboard, but do function on the MacBook Pro's keyboard. That is, I cannot control brightness of the MacBook Pro's display from the wireless keyboard, but can do so with the MacBook Pro's built in keyboard. Neither of the keyboards seem to have any control over the external monitor. The wireless keyboard is a brand new Apple aluminum keyboard. How can I gain control of the wireless keyboard's brightness control buttons?

    Hello roytel:
Welcome to HP's forum. Sorry your keyboard has become corrupted. Unfortunately there is no way to excess the keyboard. They are manufacturered preinstalled software as a set. That is Bllue Tooth Device, Mouse and Keyboard. The only solution is to replace the set. I am on my third Keyboard, Mouse and Blue Tooth Device set. Please check and compare the prices at HP's store and HP's part store. HP's parts store was cheeper when I bought my last set. I have on hand a cheep USB Keyboard as spare. • T400 - lost Win 7 64 upgrade disks

    Hi everyone
Unfortunately I have lost my Lenovo Win 7 64 upgrade disks (the infamous one delivered by Mentor Media from Singapore). Does anyone have experience of reordering them?
I've sent an email to them (in answer to their original It's shipping mail) but don't hold high hopes.
Any tip would be gratefully received.
    Miguel
    Madrid, Spain

I do not think there is anyway you can get a replacement discs because these are upgrade discs that were send during 2007 window 7 launched. Each set has the window 7 serial number and these are non-replaceable. Neither Mentor or lenovo is liable for item lost.
However, if you are talking about recovery discs, then maybe lenovo itself may entertain a replacement set. Do note that mentor is just a CDROM maker who at that time was contracted to do the window 7 upgrading process.
In your situation and if the win7 is installed on a working lenovo, I would suggest you google and download a software like ABR which can scan and extract the serial number and sometimes the activated profile. You can then download the digital official window 7 x64 bit (google it) and burn discs, then write the serial number on it. Note that since the win 7 has been activated, you cannot resell or reinstall the serial on another machine.
