Forcing a 4:3 aspect ratio on large screen TV's

I made a video using a 4:3 aspect ratio, but when it gets played on large screen TV's, the top and bottom of the image get cut off. I'd like it if this could somehow be prevented and I'm assuming that this is probably due to some needed adjustment in the DVD Studio Pro when the disc gets made. Any helpful tips would be appreciated. I'm using the latest update to FC studio #1.

I think is a problem related with the big TV setup, mut be adjusted as 16:9. You cannot control how the final user have their system adjusted.
You cannot get 4:3 pillardboxed in DVDSP. You can edit your 4:3 in a 16:9 timeline to get a pillarboxed version of your movie and include it as optional in your DVD in case people have 16:9 TVs.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

Mac pro aspect ratio of main screen is wrong

Hello,
Done something I had to do ages ago, just upgraded from 10.6 to 10.9.2. All went perfectly well but for two little (hope little) problems
1. The aspect ratio of my main screen is not correct, it sretches over the vertical direction. Impossible to do graphical work like this.
2. If I drag window to another screen the movement is not fluent as it used to be + a window can not be split over two screens which could be done before too.
For the rest all seems to be perfectly nice and clean.
Hope somebody has ideas

With the System preferences > Displays pane open, hold down the Option key for more Resolutions and more Options.
This un-Mac-like hack has been allowed to creep in, and the Mac Human Interface Police have not dealt with the perpetrators ... yet.
10.9 Mavericks changes the way displays are treated, and the new default is that each display is an independent workspace. This can be put back to the "correct" Extended desktop way.
Windows in Mavericks reside in a single space by default, so they usually don't span multiple displays. When a window is dragged between displays, it appears translucent on one of the displays to indicate this. After you are done dragging the window, it snaps to one display.
If you need an app window to span multiple displays, deselect the option "Displays have separate Spaces" in the Mission Control pane of System Preferences.

Aspect ratio on menu screen

Hello folks,
I made a custom menu graphic (jpeg, psd) to put on the menu page and no matter how many ways in reconfigure the size it won't completely fill the space. There's always a pinch on the sides or the top and bottom. Any suggestions?

It sounds like you are talking about TV set ovescan that hides about 5% of each side of an image displayed on a TV set.
BTW, for NTSC your image should be 720x540 pixels.

Adjusting Aspect ratio in Full screen mode

When Firefox is in Full Screen Mode, the text etc. occupy only the middle of the screen and is not displayed as spread over the entire screen.

Slide Size = ? Aspect Ratio

Does anyone have any idea as to what aspect ratio a 1024 X 768 slide in Keynote is? I have a projector that the aspect ratio can be changed. My issue is that I don't know what size screen I need for the projector? They are available in 16:9, 1:1, and 4:1 aspect ratios. My presentation has been created in a 1024 X 768 slide size. I realize I can change that but would rather not as the 1024 X 768 slide size seems to be the best to have the type clean and visible.

You also need to know the lens zoom factor and the position of your projector. This will determine the size of the screen. The aspect ratio of the screen should be the same as the aspect ratio of the projector: Projecto 16:9 - Screen 16:9.
In terms of font size that is easy to read, that largely depends on the distance between the viewer and the screen. Rule of thumb is that the closest person shuold be 0.7 x the height of the screen (9' high screen = 6.3' to the front row of seating) and the furthest should be no more than 7 x the height of the screen (9' high screen = 63' to the last row of seating). This also depends on the content shown. So for slides with fine details (lot of small text, busy slides) maximum distance should be no more then 4 x height of the screen. 6 x for spreadhseet and up to 8 times for video and images.

Need aspect ratio to match still images

I create slideshows from still images using CS6 that are then put on DVD and uploaded to vimeo. The problem I'm having is that I wind up with letterboxing on the sides (not top/bottom) since the aspect ratio isn't correct
I've looked on google and I can't figure out how to create a custom project that has an aspect ratio that matches the still images instead of trying to force them into video aspect ratios.
Is this possible?

The settings of the project don't matter as much as you might think. The settings of the sequence do. It is easy enough to create a sequence from a photograph and the settings will be perfect. Read this: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3804341#3804341

If you are shooting pictures like I do, they are 3:2. That ratio does not exactly work on a DVD. You can make it work by editing in a 3:2 sequence and then when you are finished you can do any number of things. You can nest your sequence into a 4:3 or 16:9 sequence and you will have choices to make. Do you scale the images down until you see everything but you have black bars, or do you scale them down to fit the sides but that means cutting off the top and bottom.
The problem is that there is no way to publish a video on a DVD with a custom shape that I know of. Someone like Jeff Bellune might show up and provide an answer. He is an expert DVD guy.
I don't know how you could get a DVD to play a 3:2 ratio video, but for YouTube it is a simple matter of using the pictures to create the sequence.
Then all you need to do is export using a 3:2 ratio, like 1620X1080, meaning you might have to unlink height and width. I have to tell you that you can upload a 3:2 video to YouTube but YouTube will play it back in a 16:9 frame amd leave black borders on the sides. I just checked.
You see, video is 16:9 or 4:3. Photos are 3:2 or so. Now, my new camera can shoot 16:9 photos, and some people shoot that way to avoid the problem you have right now.

Preserve aspect ratio for Windows Vista 64-bit OS on iMac

Hello, I wanted to know how to preserve aspect ratio on my screen resolution of 4:3 with black borders on left and right of the screen, after I have installed 64 bit Boot Camp drivers on it. I rather to play older Windows games in 4:3 without stretched mode as stretched mode looks so disordered, which is bothered me a lot.

It sounds that the Microsoft Installer does not like the optical drive inside of your Mac.
Do you have access to an external DVD drive?
If yes, try the Windows 7 install with an external DVD drive.
If no, try to install Windows 7 from a USB drive.

If you don't have an external DVD drive or a USB drive that is 8GB or larger, you might want to consider borrowing or buying one.

What is the difference between Aspect Ratios?

Hello. I couldn't find any specific documentation regarding this.
I am working on an iPhoto 09 slideshow project using the scrapbook theme. I am planning to export the slideshow as a movie (it looks like the default export is mpeg 4 but I could also export as a quicktime .mov) and then move to iDVD to burn on a DVD. Ultimately, I need to show it on a projector using a DVD player. I'm not sure what the projector's resolution is but I assume 16:9 will be the best aspect ratio for the highest quality.
In the slideshow settings, there are 4 different aspect ratios:
1) This Screen (16:9)
2) HDTV (16:9)
3) TV (4:3)
4) iPhone (3:2)
What is the difference between This Screen (1) and HDTV (1)? Does it matter? Any other suggestions?

TD is absolutely correct here. The aspect ratio is only the shape of the image, not the quality. Basically, you need to decide if you are designing the show for viewing on a HD tv (16:9 or widescreen) or a SD tv (4:3 or squarish). A couple of years ago this choice was easy since most tv's out there were still 4:3, but today, the opposite is true. The popular choice now would be 16:9.
The biggest problem you will have with the quality of your slideshow is the
fact that you're burning it to DVD.
Your slideshow will be heavily compressed to fit the DVD spec of 640 x 480
pixels and this can lead to soft images or even blurry ones.
I think we're getting "compression" and "resolution" confused here a bit, or at the very least, we're using the wrong terminology.
For everyone's benefit, let me try to explain...
If you show an image that is native 640x480 on a screen that is native 640x480 (standard def tv screen), the image will look just fine. This is resolution and will not effect quality as long as you don't try to view at a higher resolution than the image actually is.
(If you try to view a 640x480 slide show in full screen mode on your computer monitor which is running at 1280x1024, the image will look horrible.)
Trying to view a higher rez image (ie: 3200x2400) on a lower resolution (ie 640x480 or SD tv) screen will reap NO benefit in quality. Remember that a SD TV will only show 640x480 (or 720x480) and no higher, so there is no benefit in trying to cram more pixels into an image than the screen can actually show.
Of course this all changes if you're going to view it on today's HiDef tvs, but even on them, the resolution tops at at 1920x1080. Once again, using a very high def image (ie: 3840x2160) will reap NO benefit since the resolution of the screen it's being viewed on tops out at 1920x1080. The aspect ratio on this type of tv is now 16:9 so the images shape will be wider than a normal tv (4:3).
Compression is the scheme used to compress an image to reduce it's file size, thus reducing it's quality. JPEG is a common form of image compression, and the amount of compression can be adjusted..the more compression, the more degradation of quality. This has nothing to do with resolution.
Depending on how you're going to process (iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD), the program will reduce the resolution of the original image to the resolution of you output. In other words, don't worry about doing any kind of resolution change prior to creating the dvd, as the program you choose to use will simply lower the resolution (this is not compression) to fit the output you choose.

1. Is there a way to get the aspect ratio of the screen?
2. Is there a way from within Java to take over the entire screen and set the screen resolution without using DirectX?

Aspect ratio of displayed pictures wrong?

My PC display has an aspect ratio of 5:4 (1280 x 1024). LR uses the full display area but doesn't ensure that the pictures are displayed at their correct aspect ratio. A 3:2 picture actually displays as ~4:3. This is true for all displays of a picture including the slideshow.
Maybe there is a setting somewhere to fix this, but I wouldn't expect so because dealing with the aspect ratio of a screen within a program is really elementary.
(maybe it's just my PC or my ruler that measures differently vertically than it does horizontally)

If you've got Photoshop CS - CS4, you can change the pixel aspect ratio of your photos to .9 DV.
Otherwise, you can right-click on one of the pictures on the timeline and select Open Properties. Then open the Motion settings and uncheck Constrain Proportions for Scale and set the scale for the horizontal to 90%. That should make that picture perfect.
Then right-click on that picture on your timeline and select Copy, then lasso or shift-click to select all the other photos on your timeline, right-click and select Paste Attributes.

CS4 changing aspect ratio, resizing video

I've been working on a project at school for some time and am just now getting to the editing factor. My issue is about half way through editing it seems that its changed the aspect ratio from wide screen to a more standard ratio. I have it set to scale to the frame size. Just to clear a few things up they were all captured the same, all the original quicktime files are the same it's just once I import them into premiere that I start having issues. I really appreciate it, thanks

After uploading it to youtube the size gets so small you can hardly see it. My main goal with this thread is to get the video to actually scale to the frame.

Different aspect ratios

So how do you treat your different aspect ratios now we have iphone 4, 5 and 6 all different sizes?
Do you build for 4 and then have extra space and backgrounds for 5 and 6, or do you adjust your app based on the different resoltuons by detecting the res and auto adjusting and moving things?

The answer is it's up to you. What you're asking about is a design principle called 'Fluid Layout' or 'Responsive Layout'. The idea is to design your UI so it responds to the different resolutions and/or aspect ratios of the screen it's on.
Fluid layout is the term when the app continuously adjusts itself as the window is resize ( this is more of a desktop approach since mobile is on a fixed screen size ).
Responsive layout is when the UI jumps to a specific state when dimensional threshholds are reached. So you could have 4 different layouts ( Mobile, Tablet, Desktop, Extended Desktop ) that the app can switch among depending on the screen size dimensions. In your case you may want to take the mobile layout and break it up into aspect ratios.
Responsive layout is more easy to program and recommended for people new to the principle since it's easier to think of set states instead of constant flow. But Fluid Layout is the best solution if your an advanced developer because you never have to go back in and create a new state to support new devices. The layout is always perfect no matter the screen.
How it works programmatically you usually have a listener, very high up in the program, that watches for the stage resizing and then calls a function that tells the UI to realign itself and go through all the children so they know to realign themselves. In your case you could just run that on launch because your screen size should never adjust. In some cases you should update the children first then the parents.

Force front row to play video on 16:9 aspect ratio

Hello, I would like to know if there is a way to force front row to play a 3:4 video in 16:9 aspect ratio.
As you can imagine, I have a 16:9 TV and I would like to see it, better in 16:9.
This can be done very well by Quicktime, I don't know why it seems not to be possible to do on Front Row.

No, Front Row just plays them as they are flagged.
Even if you could, the video would be stretched and people would be short and fat!

Can you 'force" change aspect ratio for DVD player 4.0?

I have burnt a dvd-r from my pioneer hdd/dvd recorder (630H). The program is in 16:9 ratio but plays at 4:3 on my powerbook dvd player 4. (All other dvd-r burnt via other burners appear OK however - so I guess this is something peculiar to the Pioneer) Why is this?. Question is: is there any way to "force" the apple dvd player to change aspect ratios? Thanks for any assistance.

I've got about 20 video tracks and one audio track all laid out and I've decided I'd like to insert something before the audio track so if I move the audio track everything else will be off. Is there a way to shift all the video tracks and the audio track over to the right to make room for the inserted video?
