Forcing a disk to format.

I have a Flip video camera, and I have contacted support about this many times, however have not received a satisfactory answer as of yet.
I plug it in, and it takes forever to mount, over 5 minutes sometimes, I then get this message once it has mounted.
"The disk "FLIPVIDEO" was not repairable by this computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible"
I can move my videos to and from the drive then fine, but sometimes it mounts and sometimes it doesn't.
I decided to format the drive, and then reinstall the software, however when I try to partition or erase the disk i get an error such as "Input/output error" or "the mediakit............"
Is there any way you can force a drive to format? It appears on the desktop as a read only drive, so I don't know.
Thanks in advance.

It is apparently in FAT16? Weird.
Not necessarily. It's a very inexpensive camera and the camera OS is probably DOS or some very early OS that is in public domain.
I get an error about setting permissions when the camera finally mounts and I have the Flip software open.
Permissions? Remember that Leopard may try to tag the drive with an invisible file.
It takes around 5 minutes or so to mount, where as I have seen others mount in a few seconds, I am fairly sure that the thing needs to be formatted back to its original state, but being read only can't be done.
You are spending valuable time trying to make up for a PC thing.
Actually, the Flip people give a how-to on reformatting the camera, however I get this error as i said.
The camera is very basic, and has no menus, just a delete button for deleting the videos.
It's really made for a PC. I suggest upgrading to better camera and then using your time for better things than formatting.

  • Looking for a way to force failed disk to mount ??

I have approx. 450GB of files saved to the disk of my 2TB Time Capsule which suddenly failed and will not mount the internal TC disk.
** I am not talking about Time Machine backups in anyway — I am talking about files + folders of all kinds which I manually saved to the disk. I have no backup for these files. **
I do have an empty 500GB external drive I can archive the files to — however, because I can not get the TC to mount — I cannot archive or copy the files.
I'm looking for any suggestions/workarounds that you may have to help me access these files + force this disk to mount.
Disk Utility / Tech Tool etc. obviously don't work because the disk is not even listed there.
    Terminal command ?
Manually remove the disk from the TC hardware + mount another way ?
How would a company like *Drive Savers* do this?

If the drive does not appear in DU, then it is not accessible. You could try using recovery software that may be able to access the drive:
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
If the drive's motor has failed (You can't hear or feel any motor vibration directly from the drive) they it's definitely not recoverable. You would have to use a data recovery service in this case.

  • If i upgrade my macbook pro in maverick os , my hard disk is format or not ?

if i upgrade my macbook pro in maverick os , my hard disk would format or not ?

I'm not sure what you're asking.
Do you mean you're upgrading the MacBook Pro hardware and Mavericks is the current OS or do you mean you're upgrading the OS to Mavericks from, (what?), and asking if the HD needs formatting or something?

  • How can I force the Disk Cache on with Apple Raid Card?

I have an apple raid card in my mac pro that has now had it's battery fail twice. I don't really want to keep putting money into this and would rather just force the disk cache on and hope my UPS works, I don't use this box for real work anymore anyway and it's all backed up.
There used to be a force on button next to the Write Cahce Status section, but that seems to have gone away. Does anyone know how to force the cache on? Permanently if possible.

OK, Command Line fun, use at your own risk:
    sudo raidutil modify controller -E

OK, the videoformat may be changed (PAL, NTSC) by plugin a specified cable to be connected the iPhone to the TV, but how can  I force to have PAL-format instead of NTSC to be send to iMovie via the USB-cable? Al this transcoding afterwards takes a lot to much time. Is there a solution before sending the clips?

Well, thanks a lot.  iMovie '11 is similar, but not identical and unfortunately I don't seem to find any "Frame Rate Pop-Up menu" when I generate a new Project. Do not find an "Aspect Ratio Pop-Up" either. Also the help does not speak of this options.  I just have to choose a Theme and that's it. Also the "Settings" Menu for the Film does not help.
I also checked the general settings for iMovie:
So I would dare say, there is actually no possibility anymore, to set the output format. And also when I create the output file, there is nothing more than a short list of resolutions.
I do not understand why all options were taken away. I admit, I am a little disappointed.

  • How to save SOME time machine Mac backups from the TM disk to other disk WITHOUT formatting the destination disk?

    Hi,
How to save SOME time machine Mac backups from the TM disk to other disk WITHOUT formatting the destination disk?
I have a Time Machine disk (A) including the backups of several different Macs (B, C, D & E) generated with an old Mac OS X 10.5.8 (iMac PowerPC) over the years.
I have transferred the old Mac contents to a new Mac with OS X 10.8.3 using Migration Assitant. All OK.
Now, I want to erase such TM disk A to use if for other purposes, but first, I would like to RECOVER the backups of some Macs inside it (D and E). Is that possible WITHOUT formatting the destination disk and selecting only some Macs from the TM disk and not the fulll TM disk? How?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I do not think that is messy, anway. I simply used the same external disk as Time Machine disk for different Macs. And that worked OK all the time for years.
The ExternalTimeMachineDisk contains the folder Backups.backupdb
which contains the following folders (each one corresponding to the Time Machine backup made from each Mac):
    Mac1
    Mac2
    MacBook1
    MacBook2
In relation to my message above, is it possible to select specific files, folders or full Mac backups from such Time Machine disk and save them to other disk? How?
    Thanks.

  • My mac pro does not start up because then hard disk is formatted

My mac pro does not start up because then hard disk is formatted, How can install the operating system.
    regards,
    Tassew

Did you erase the hard drive yourself? If not, what exactly are you seeing, and what happened immediately prior to you starting to see it?
Your profile indicates that you are/were running Lion (Mac OS X 10.7.4) on a retina MacBook Pro, so you should be able to hold down command-R at startup to enter recovery mode, and you can reinstall the system from there. But whether or not you need to do something else first depends on your answers to the questions above.

  • What will happen to my key if my hard disk is formatted, will the key work after my hard disk is formatted ?

I want to know that, will my synchronized computer key will work if I format my hard disk because when hard disk is formatted then the key code will be erased , though I have saved my key will it work after formatting hard disk . let me know .
let me also know that what will happen if I lose the key I had saved then how will I access my synchronized computer .

    Hi!
Can you point to the information where it says that the information is backed up in our servers? If that's mentioned anywhere we need to clarify it.
The only reference I found is here: [[What is Firefox Sync?]] and it specifically says that the information is synched across devices through our servers. If that's misleading, let me know so we can rephrase it.
Regarding storing the key in your pen-drive or any other back up system: This is the best solution and it will work smoothly after you format your computer. The key doesn't change when you format your computer so you will have no issues after all.

  • Mac disk accidently formatted for windows...

I pulled a mac hard disk from a friends broken Powerbook G4 - formatted with OS 10.x - with the intention of pulling all the info off the drive so my friend could save his files.  After putting the drive in a USB2 enclosure, I could see the files fine, and was about to transfer them to my HD, when my braniac son who builds PCs for fun asked what I was doing.  I expalined that my friend had purchased a windows PC and would not likely be able to view the files on his PC, so I was going to transfer them to my machine, reformat the disk to work with windows, and transfer the files back. Maybe there was an easier way, but I am not aware what it would be.
My son said "no problem dad- windows can read that disk".  BEing the eternal pessimist, I said "OK, show me".  He plugged the disk into his machine and viola- nothing happened.  He was surprised, and started typing furiously- and before I could ask what he was doing I guess he put a windows partition on the drive with windows 7 drivers -  I think it is NTSF. But he still could not see the files.
I stopped him ASAP, and took the disk back to my Mac.  I opened disk utility, and I saw 2 partitions- one 250MB with the windows format.  The other -I think- was "unformatted".   I downloaded Data Rescue 3, and scanned the disk.  That application can see the files I need, but I am thinking there has got to be another way without spending $100.  When I use Disk Utility now,  the drive shows it is "unformated".
What I want to do is somehow mount this on my Mac, possibly rebuild a directory and offload the files.
    Thoughts?

Have your son cough up the $100. You broke it. You fix it!
    Try:
"TestDisk is a free data recovery utility. It was primarily designed to help recover lost data storage partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally erasing a partition table)."
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TestDisk
The more you mess with the disk, the greater the chance of trashing the disk.  I'd say TestDisk is too risky.
    Mess with a virtual hd.
Use disk utility to create. Not shown in the example.
I think if you rename the created file to .dmg, it will just work.
    Do a  bit-by-bit copy
In Mac OS 10.4, you can use the following command to display all the partitions:
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    # This is a little deep.
#It is  best to do the pdisk command before you eject the external hard drive. Now, eject the external hard drive.  Do another pdisk command to see what drive name has disappeared.  The disappearing name is the name of your external hard drive.
    sudo pdisk -l
    #for details...
    man pdisk
#The syntax is different for Mac OS 10.2. I do not know about 10.3.
    # Do a  bit-by-bit copy.
    #eject the partition
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    dd if=/dev/disk0s10 bs=4096 | gzip | dd of=~/disk0-s10 bs=4096
#this can take awhile. Open another window and do ls -l ~/disk0-s10
    # Here is  how to restore the partition.
    dd if=~/disk0-s10 bs=4096 | gunzip | dd of=/dev/disk0s10 bs=4096
Remember to erase the large zero data file before backing up.

  • Disk Utility - Format

    Hi All,
A rather dumb question, but for the purpose of peace of mind for backups, here goes.
I have a few external HD's, which I have formatted using disk utility. The data on there must be deleted in an unrecoverable sense so I used the 7 - Pass Erase.
My question: When plugging in an External HD, after opening disk utility, in the left window is show:
    465.8 GB Seagate FreeAgent
    XXX Files
where "XXX" = My real name.
Which one do I select to format or does it not really matter. The reason I asked is because I did a format and selected the first option i.e. 465.8 GB..., but after format completion the "XXX File's" still remained there. I just left the disk name as Untitled during the format option selection.
I hope the above makes sense.
    Thank for any feedback
    Ciao

Select 465.8 GB Seagate FreeAgent (It is the upper icon and represents the entire drive. The xxx lower icon is only the volume.

  • Disk Utility - Format Time for 500GB (Zero Out Data)

    Hello.
Is there one length of time for formatting a hard drive with one pass of Zero Out Data? For instance, does the length of time change depending if you format with zeros using USB2, FW400, FW800, or eSATA?
    *My Format Setup*
    LaCie Rugged 500GB All-Terrain (USB2 & FW400/800)
    FW800 Cable
    GUID Partition Table
    Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Zero Out Data (One Pass)
I'm formatting with a FW800 connection. Disk Utility has said it will take 1.5 hours for about 3.5 hours now. The blue bar has progressed even though the time remaining is incorrect. At this rate, it will take seven hours to format 500GB.
I'm going to be formatting multiple 500GB and 1TB drives, and I'm wondering if the time I'm experiencing is normal. Therefore, it should take a day to format 1TB with one pass of zeros. Is this correct?
Thank you for your help! =)
    Message was edited by: Revearti

It takes a long time to zero out data on a 500GB drive. The larger the drive, the longer it takes. I don't think the connection makes a difference, since each of your listed options are high speed. Never tried it on an external with USB 1.1, so can't give you any real time experience there. But it will take well over an hour to write zeros on every block of a 500GB drive.

  • How 10.6.2 Disk Utility format "HFS" CD image for System-8?

    Hi,
I've spent 2 days trying to learn how to create a CD-ROM that a System 8.0 Mac can read. The problem is that System 8.0 cannot read HFS+. I'm try to create a CD-ROM with the System 8.1 Update will correct. But I can't get 10.6.2 to create a HFS formatted CD-ROM. Disk Utility allows me to specify a CD/DVD Master image, but the format choices are only HFS Extended, MS-DOS, and NTFS. I held down the Option key, but additional format types do not appear.
    Can someone please help?
    Thank you,
    Don

I donated a ProCenter 210 (System 8.0), Mac 7200 PowerPC (System 7.6.3), LaserWriterPlus, and an Apple Color StyleWriter, plus some other stuff.
The equipment is at the Easter Seals Jolliet school. I have 2 System 8.0 install images and 1 System 8.1 Update install image on my MacPro 10.6.2. CD-ROMs are the only way I can bring the system software to the school. But the older systems cannot read HFS+. I'll try FAT again, but haven't been successful.
I don't know why Apple still charges for System 8.0 given that it's no longer supported and rarely used. It's not like using System 9 which I would prefer.
    Thank you,
    Don
