Foreign language attachment titles messed up

I often get files with Japanese titles attached to emails. In Mail on both my 4-year-old iMac and 1-year-old MBP, both running 10.8.2, these titles often get all goofy-charactered. Funny thing is, if I go to view my iCloud mail in Safari, the titles are fine. What's up?

Boxes often means support for the language has not been enabled. These pages describe how to do this:

    Just like the title implied, i can only see English characters despite having a Japanese ime installed and also having fonts. I can type in the languge and my ipod displays it fine but itunes cant.

    Just doublechecking ... Do you have supplemental language support enabled, as per the following document?

  • Foreign-language song titles

    Hey all,
    I own a lot of Japanese CDs and was wondering if there is a way to pull up the Japanese-language names for the songs from Gracenote. Right now all I'm getting is a bunch of weird boxes for the titles; I think I need a language pack from MS Windows Update but I'm not sure. Thanks for your help.

    (1) My iBooks Author help resources are in a foreign language. How do I change it to English? (2) Is there an iBooks Author pdf manual I can download?

    There is no PDF available. I sent a link  to a page full of links and info not much different from the help files.
    There are many Free books in the iBooks store which will take you through the basics of iBA.
    I  like "Create your first Interactive book using iBooks Author"   its created by iBook-Widgets.com - who also  supply widgets at a price.. but the book is very free and very good.. search the iBooks store for their title.
    You cannot use iBA on an iPad, however, I also use the iPad app --  "Book Creater"   ( redjumper.net ) its very low priced around $3 or so. The people who  create it are helpful and friendly. You can distribut your books to friends and family  using  Dropbox or other cloud storage. If you want to creaet an ePub file and then upload to the iBooks store, its not difficult.  You create the book on your iPad. It is no where near as good as iBA for functionality.. but it spossible to  make really good eBooks.
    I think Applecare shoud come into effect with the language problems if it can be  found to be a glitch on the computer.  Applecare is product based and does not apply to software.
    Take it stage by stage,   visit your Apple store and   ask if they can solve the help files in langauges first, then  react to the answer, it could be they can solve the issue which leave you a clear path with iBA.
    Also you can  gather more indormation about how to use it with the help files.
    Try the info I have  included and   see how it develpops... any problems get back here and we can look for alternatives.
    try this... https://itunes.apple.com/app/id661166101?mt=8&&referrer=click%3Da63089e4-e3d4-49 e9-896a-58e0cfd50acf
    its the free version... if you like upgrade later.
    Happy New Year... hope its a good one....

  • ResourceBundle in foreign languages

    Hi!
    I'm using a resource bundle file. Works great in many different languages.
    However when I try to use russian letters (Cyrillic) it appears in my web page as ??????? - ?????.
    Question- do resource bundle files freak out at foreign character sets ?
    Do I need to do a meta-equiv to charset ISO-8859-5 ?
    Help please!

    I don't know about the encoding mapping stuff... but you shouldn't need to do that string getBytes translation at all. That would only be if your strings were read in as one format when they really should have been read as the other. This happens with Tomcat (and maybe others) because it always by default, uses ISO8895-1 as the encoding. Since that's an 8-bit format, it doesn't really corrupt the bytes, but if a UTF-8 string having several multi-byte characters was read, it would look like more characters (usually jibberish) then it should.
    If the page's specifed charset is UTF-8, then what the browser submits will be UTF-8 bytes. So you want the charset defined in the @page declaration cuz it'll be set in the response header that way. The meta tag is usually used for completeness, but probably isn't really needed. The setCharacterEncoding() tells the server to use that encoding instead of ISO8895-1 for reading request data. This page is something I had written to test Chinese (you should be able to see that on Win2K or XP, I think). Just copy/paste the text in the page to the form, I see no reason Russian or others won't work.
    // _lang.jsp
    <%@ page language="java" contentType="text/html; charset=UTF-8" %>
    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">
    <html>

         <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" />
    </head>
    <body bgcolor="#ffffff" background="" text="#000000" link="#ff0000" vlink="#800000" alink="#ff00ff">
    <%
    request.setCharacterEncoding("UTF-8");
    String str = "\u7528\u6237\u540d";
    String name = request.getParameter("name");
    // OR instead of setCharacterEncoding...
    //if(name != null) {
    //     name = new String(name.getBytes("ISO8859_1"), "UTF8");
    System.out.println(application.getRealPath("/"));
    System.out.println(application.getRealPath("/src"));
    %>
    req enc: <%= request.getCharacterEncoding() %><br />
    rsp enc: <%= response.getCharacterEncoding() %><br />
    str: <%= str %><br />
    name: <%= name %><br />
    <form method="POST" action="_lang.jsp">
    Name: <input type="text" name="name" value="" >
    <input type="submit" name="submit" value="Submit POST" />
    </form>
    <br />
    <form method="GET" action="_lang.jsp">
    Name: <input type="text" name="name" value="" >
    <input type="submit" name="submit" value="Submit GET" />
    </form>
    </body>
    </html>Using get or post should both work fine.
    As for the resource bundles... The contents have to be ASCII text. Non-ASCII need to be converted to Unicode escapes (\uXXXX). So you can write the file in Russian (or whatever) text encoding, then use the native2ascii tool to convert the file to the proper escapes. Then it'll be read as Unicode, and there is no translation needed at all, just write the strings out to the JSP page.

  • Why does 'Guest User' appear in a foreign language when logged in as guest?

    Why does 'Guest User' appear in a foreign language when logged in as guest? It's not a major problem but it would be nice to be able to fix it, and to understand how it happened.
    Everything else is in English (or set to English) as far as I can see, and my Macbook is only a couple of weeks old. All system updates have been performed and permissions have been repaired.
    It displays it in Finnish (Suomi) as 'Vierastilin käyttäjä' only when logged in, in the System Preferencess user list and apple menu (where you would normally select 'Log Out Guest User'). I cant find anyone else with the same problem online. I am in the UK, purchased the Macbook on the UK Apple Store online, and I have never been to Finland or selected anything to do with Finland or its language. Everything else is in English.
    I should add that 'Vierastilin' showed up instead of 'Guest User' on the OSX login screen on the first day I had the Macbook, but this seemed to fix itself somehow soon after.
    A couple of photos to illustrate the problem that still exists are attached.

    Thanks for the reply. I only have English - Primary but I guess I could add Finland and then delete it...
    Okay, tried that, lots of variations including deleting all other languages and only using Finnish, and then using only British English etc - when guest is in Finnish the whole lot becomes Finnish/Suomi (see attached photos to compare with the ones above) - then when you delete Finnish and go back to English, everything is Englisg apart from 'Vierastilin käyttäjä' as above.
    Any other ideas where it stores that info - is there a dodgy preference file somewhere which needs zapping?

  • Unwanted foreign language that won't go away!!!

    Hey
    I recently had to reformat my hard drive and rebuild all the software on my laptop. Upon reinstalling itunes I notice that all the playlist titles are in a foreign language that I dont recognise.
    Also in th preferences my library is entitled *Käyttäjän David kirjasto*
    I uninstalled itunes and reinstalled and it is exactly the same. I'm at a bit of a loss. Does anyone have any ideas why this is and how to get rid of it?

    Hey there,
    Have you tried this?
    To change your language settings on a Windows PC:
    Open iTunes.
    From the Edit menu, choose Preferences.
    Select the General tab.
    On the Language pop-up menu (in the lower section of the window), choose your desired language.
    Click OK.
    Quit and reopen iTunes.
    More information can be found through the link below. Hope this helps\

  • Why have some of my toolbar settings suddenly appeared in a foreign language?

    I tried to post a screen shot, but I can't paste here apparently. The toolbar line that has some of my icons, like Facebook, Skype, and YouTube, also contain items that appear to be written in Arabic or Greek or another foreign language.
    Fore example, first one is: rockholmi.ru followed by a search bar, then a green arrow followed by the words: Hantn (both ns are small capital Ns and the first one has this symbol ~ over it. Next comes a globe with the words: Mehho. The first h is capitalized and the second capital H is attached to the o. When I pull down the menu items next to these words, they are also in these mysterious languages. However, the rest of my toolbar is in English! Help, please!

  • Cleaning out foreign language files

    I installed the latest Micro-Smith Spring Cleaning Ap.
    To save space I've been deleting foreign language files.
    How many of these can be removed?
    I've currently got 5627.
    For example, do I need any Arab files?
    I thought that when I initially installed Leopard I opted for only English, but the Spring Cleaning Language File Folder indicated that I had over six thousand.
    MS Tech Support said, "I don't have the exact number of how many non english files there are. If you want, you can probably contact apple to see if they have an exact number of non-english files. To be honest, I would just leave it alone. Those files don't take up much space, and its not going to do your system any harm."
    The files do take up space. If I don't need them why shouldn't I delete them?

    As per one other respondent, I have used Monolingual with OSX (note:prior to Leopard. I haven't seen anything to confirm it won't mess up Leopard) but I haven't had any problems with it.
    The advice it offers is to leave any file related to your main language - in other words if you use US English, keep International English. I also erred on the side of caution and kept anything that mentioned English. You can easily save about 2Gb of space doing this as it deletes a lot of project and help files related to apps like iDVD.
    I'm no expert but if you opt for English as your installed language it might be the case that OSX installs in English but additional stuff like iLife still installs all the foreign language files.
    It also gives you the option to remove unwanted processor architectures. I was wary of this option but I had no problems, although it didn't save quite as much space.
    Good Luck

  • I downloaded Pimsleur foreign language mp3's and put them on my iPad but now cant find them.  Any advice on how to access these files?!  Thanks

    I downloaded foreign language mp3's to my iPad and iPod nano and cant find either one of them on the device even though they both claim to be there under "other" memory when I plug them into my computer.  Any advice on how to find these files on my iPad/iPod device?

    I put them in iTunes and then dragged them to my devices.  On my iPad it looked like it put it under the 'purchased' tab but I looked in the music app and purchased tab and still cant fine them anywhere.  So I tried to move them over again but it says they are already there do I want to skip or duplicate.  Also, when my iPad is attached to my computer, I cant find them either.....

  • System.getProperty with foreign language

    Hello All,
    I've developed a program that uses System.getProperty("user.home"), in order to transfer files to that location.
    Everything's going well as long as I'm using English version.
    When one of my customers ran this using a foreign language (Turkish, but it seems to have the same effect on other languages), instead of c:\documents and settings\administrator, he got a wrong fonetic path, i.e. C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTÝNGS\ADMÝNÝSTRATOR (check the I's, they're not the same), although he has the English path in his computer.
    You can see this also when you change the regional settings in an English based Windows to Turkish.
    How can I make the System property look at the correct path (again, this happens in other languages as well)?
    Thanks,
    Barak

    Hmmm.... I didn't think I used toUpperCase in my code. When all else fails, my advice is to read the API...
    [http://java.sun.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/lang/String.html#toUpperCase()]
    <quote>
    Note: This method is locale sensitive, and may produce unexpected results if used for strings that are intended to be interpreted locale independently. Examples are programming language identifiers, protocol keys, and HTML tags. For instance, "title".toUpperCase() in a Turkish locale returns "T?TLE", where '?' is the LATIN CAPITAL LETTER I WITH DOT ABOVE character. To obtain correct results for locale insensitive strings, use toUpperCase(Locale.ENGLISH).

  • Catalog id is not getting displayed properly in Foreign Language (French)

    Hi All,
    I have created a web service id for the external catalog and I have assigned the same to one of the user. The name of the web service id is getting displayed properly in the shopping cart creation screen when the language is English. But when we are changing the user language to Foreign language (French), the name is not getting displayed properly.
    Could you please advise me if there any settings needs to be done in the parameters of the specific web service id. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hi,
    Go to External Web Services and the select the web service ID. Then click on GOTO >Translation and select the language and enter the description of the web service as to be disaplyed while users log in French against the language.
