Forgot administrator password

I put in an Administrator password but my iMac says that I have the wrong one (I left myself a hint, but it still says the password is incorrect).  I can't upgrade to Mavericks or do any other upgrade.  How do I re-set my Adminsitrator's password?

Old IMAC with 10.5.6 OSX. Forgot Administrator password (which I had already changed.) Followed instructions as per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274
Started up from the original OSX install disc 1 and selected "Password reset" from "utilies" in Installer. But HD icon doesn't show up. (Only install disc and admin root available:no good as the support website underscores: Important: Do not select "System Administrator (root)". This is actually the root user. You should not confuse it with a normal administrator account.).
    What can I do?
    Thanks for your suggestions. Antonio

Not familiar with that version of OS X but try using Terminal and type in resetpassword. If that brings up a password reset screen is your original username shown?

    hi,
Presently i am working in CE 7.1 -trial version. I started my SAPMMC today. I forgot my administrator's password so i was unable to login into the portal. Then i activated the Emergency user. Logged into portal as SAP* and changed the administrator password. Then i logged off. De-activated the Emergency user from the Configtool and set the administrator password from the secure store. Then i restarted the SAPMMC. However after this jstart.exe would try to start but it would stop after certain no. of seconds. Hence i am unable to open SAPMMC and since i still dont know administrator password i cannot unistall.
    Please help........

1.If you get the message like:
"jstart.exe has caused an unhandled exception and needs to terminate"
Then have a look at this SAP Notes: 1114284.
You need to update the Kernal to Patch Level 83.

Mac OS X 10.6- If you forget your administrator password
    For Lion/Mountain Lion
        Boot to the Recovery HD:

Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.          OS X Lion- Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
If you are unable to boot from an installer DVD:
(these will only work on Leopard or earlier)
      1. Boot to Safe Mode by restarting and after the chime press and hold down
the COMMAND-S keys until a black screen with white type appears.
      2. At the prompt, type the following commands pressing return after each
          command line:
         /sbin/fsck -yf
If you do not receive a "Filesystem OK" message then repeat this command
until you do.  If after seven tries you still do not receive a "Filesystem OK"
message, then the system is corrupted and needs to be reinstalled.
         mount -uw /
         cd /private/var/db/netinfo
         mv local.nidb local.old
         rm ../.AppleSetupDone
         shutdown -r now
The second-to-last command above will cause OS X to think that the operating system is newly installed, and when the new owner starts up the computer it will send him/her to the startup wizard where he/she can start a new user without reinstalling.
This last method does not actually change a password. It simply removes the user accounts and lets you create an initial admin account as if the computer were new out of the box.
Reset Admin Password Using The Terminal
You can reset the password by printing out (or writing down) and carefully following these steps.
First, find the short name of the admin user on the machine. The easiest way of doing this is by looking at what the directory is called in the Users folder.
Now, start in Single-user Mode. It should boot into a command line.
Enter these exact lines. Press RETURN after each.
    mount -uw /
    ifconfig lo0 up
    cd /var/db/netinfo
    netinfod -s local
Now you'll need that short name. Enter "passwd", a space, and the short name of the admin. For example, if the admin was rather prosaically called "imadmin", you would enter "passwd imadmin".
The computer will now prompt you to change the password for "lmadmin" (or whatever the short name was). Go ahead and enter a new password.
    Now, enter:
    sync
    reboot
and the machine will reboot. The admin password should now be changed.

  • Forgot Administrator Password, Can't find installaton disc.. please help

Is there anything else I can do to reset my administrator password without having the disc? I misplaced it when I moved. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I don't know what "address" you are talking about, maybe you mean "command". You must actually type the commands in the window, you can't "choose" anything in single-user mode. I don't think that "info" should be there. possibly the hard disk is damaged and that is an error report. It sounds like you did an "Archive and Install", if so, you must have had an installer disk.
OK, I see you are not the original poster. You should always start a new discussion for your problem, never join an existing one.
I suggest you boot from the installer disk. Don't run the installer but open Terminal. Type the command:
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    then
    reboot
Create a new uniquely named user when you register.
