Terribly sorry Joseph Kriz. I had absolutley no intention of annoying anyone. This was the first time I have been communicating in a discussion group, and as I wrote my comments I had no idea how my typing would reflect and where my question would be going. Hope my unintentional typing will be forgiven and causes no further agitation. The only additional comment I can make on your response is that "I do not use capital letters or CAPS LOCK while I try to enter my administrator password". Thank you for guiding me

  • Forgot start up password on MacBook pro

What needs to be done to retrieve or reset the start up password to my
macbook pro?  When I turn on my computer I am prompted with a little grey box that says "To access this computer, you need to enter your password".  After three
incorrect attempts, my computer shuts down.

The simple answer is remember your password, but which password is it, the user login or the firmware?

  • How do i find com.apple.smig keychain password on MacBook Pro

In order to finish transferring old MacBook Pro stuff to my new iMac, I need a com.apple.smig keychain password.  What is it and where do I find it?  I looked in applications/utilities/keychain access/password, but I don't see com.apple.smig.  Is it under something else? thanx

Sorry, it doesn't work to look in Keychain.
Since both machines are fully occupied by the transfer process, you can't get into Keychain.
I checked on another machine and there was no com.apple.smig in Keychain. It was a macine I had just transferred everything from to a new machine and had gotten the same messge. It is hard to believe this is an issue for so many people and there are no ansers to be found.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
As you have OS X Mountain Lion, try resetting the password from Recovery > http://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4101
It looks like OS X was reinstalled. After resetting the password, you will be able to log in and use your MacBook Pro

  • How to reset user and password on MacBook Pro without CD

I recently bought a MacBook Pro, 15" with Lion on Ebay.
There are times when I am asked for a password. I have asked the person who I bpught it from, but he does not remember.
I do not have the original disk, so I need a method to reset the user and password.
    Thanks

    Thank you for your input.
I received an e-mail from a computer tech that thought the following would work; please let me know what you think:
ResetLion password with Single User mode
Anyone running Mac OS X Lion cantake advantage of this method:
Shut down your Mac and turn it back on while holding     down the Command and S keys at the same time until your see     a black screen with white text. This is known as Single User mode.
You can skip this step, but it’s recommended that you     don’t because it will check the consistency of your hard drive. At the     prompt, type fsck -fy and press Enter.
Once the disk check is complete and the prompt returns,     type mount -uw / and press Enter.
Type launchctl load     /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist and press     Enter.
Type ls /Users and press Enter. All of the     usernames on the computer will be listed, which is helpful if you don’t     know or remember what these are.
Type dscl . passwd /Users/username password     while replacing username with one of the users displayed in     the previous step and replacing password with the new password     of your choice. Press Enter. You will likely get an error message about a     file or directory not being found – it’s safe to ignore this.
    Type reboot and press Enter.

  • Firmware Password on MacBook Pro 2011 (10.6.8 Intel)

    Hello,
Please read this entire post before commenting below.
I am requiring access of the boot selector menu on my MacBook Pro.
Whenever I try and get to the menu, the firmware password box shows up. I am trying to change / remove said password.
My MacBook was bought under a bulk deal with  300 others, and each one contains the same firmware password.
I do not know the firmware password, and I am unable to open up my computer and add / remove any RAM.
I do not have access to the boot CD either.
Please do help me out on this issue.
I am entirely certain that removing / replacing the firmware password is possible without opening the computer / using the boot CD, as I have seen a colleague gain access to the menu without doing either.
    Regards,
    Rowan Crothers

    Clinton,
That does not really help, whatsoever.
The only suggestion it states that I can do is to use the Boot CD's utility.
Which, as stated earlier, I do not have access to.
    Regards,
    Rowan Crothers
New Mac's do not come with a RE-Install DVD of any kind. They use a Recovery HD partition on the internal drive to Re-Install Lion over the internet. But that will not do you any good as to get to that Recovery HD system you must know the Firmware password.
But why are you wanting to change or remove this password. To my knowledge you, the user, has no access to the Boot Sector and if it really did have a EFI firmware password you would not be able to load the OS without first typing in that password.
Have you tried leaving that password request blank?
