Forgotten Admin password

I created a new Admin Password for my Son's Mini and promtly forgot it. I have tried inserting the Install Disk and holding down the C key at startup but it never takes me to a utilities screen. I have the system automatically logging in as my Son and am afraid that is why it is not letting me reset the password. Any suggestions?

I am not sure what - exactly - is happening. You should be able to start fro your install DVD and proceed from there.

  • HT202280 resetting admin password

I need help resetting my admin password. I have 4 computer logins  on one computer I merged them on one big imac. When I set what I thought was the admin password, that password is for the other 3. The admin I forgot what it is. Trying to keep others from being able to access one. Well that did not work! Help!
I understand there is a way to do it using my apple ID How?

Your AppleID and your administrator passwords have nothing to do with one another. If you cannot remember your Administrator's password then reset it by following the instructions in:

  • Can anyone help.  For security reasons I reset my admin password on my Macbook Pro a few days ago and didn't write it down.  Now I've forgotten it.  I didnt receive an installation disc when I purchased my Macbook Pro online - it didn't come with one-help

Please see question above, but also note, I have the Applecare Protection Plan but am unable to get through to anyone on a weekend and I desperately need to use my laptop this weekend.  I can't log in at all now as I've forgotten my admin password.  A few weeks ago I also changed the password on my husband's new MacBook Pro and again forgot the password.  I spoke to someone at Apple and they helped me to reset it within minutes, by restarting the computer holding Command+something else (I can't remember what it was). A black screen with writing came up and I had to type in something like "password" (not sure exactly).  Anyway, this was a very quick and efficient process but I didn't write it down unfortunately.  Does anyone out there know what to do?  Thanks in anticipation

  • I've forgotten my admin password!!

I bought my MacBook about a year ago, and set up the account and everything, only now I have forgotten the administrator password. I need it to set up another account for my daughter. Everything I've looked at tells me t insert my Mac OS X Install Disc and I will be able to reset it, but I don't have this disc. What do I do?

There are ways of resetting the admin password without the disk.
This method will create a new admin account. Once done log into this admin account and reset the other admin accounts password. Once you have full use of your regular admin account you can delete the one created here.
Startup by holding down the apple and S keys, when the white text on black background has fully loaded type the following pressing enter at the end of each line.
    /sbin/mount -uaw
    rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
    reboot

  • HT1752 I have forgotten my admin password and need to create another user

I have forgotten my admin password and need to create another user. Have no disks to boot from!!

You need an installer disc in order to reset an admin password. I don't know if the following will work on your system, but give it a try:
You can also reset the password by printing out (or writing down) and carefully following these steps.
First, find the short name of the admin user on the machine. The easiest way of doing this is by looking at what their directory is called in the Users folder.
Now, start up the computer while holding down Cmd-S. It should boot into a command line. (If it doesn't, you may need to reset the firmware password, which is detailed elsewhere.)
    Type these exact lines:
    mount -uw /
    ifconfig lo0 up
    cd /var/db/netinfo
    netinfod -s local
Now you'll need that short name. (You did write it down, didn't you?) Type "passwd", a space, and the short name of the admin. For example, if the admin was - rather prosaically - called "admin", you'd type "passwd admin".
The computer will now prompt you to change the password for "admin" (or whatever the short name was). Go ahead and type a new password.
    Now, type:
    sync
    reboot
and the machine will reboot. The admin password should now be changed.
