Forgotten Master Password

Hi all,
I think I could be going slowly mad. My G4 doesn't seem to regonise any of my passwords including my Master Password. So at the moment I'm locked out of the computer all together. I can't get past the admin password screen as it's not reading my password and when I'm prompted to enter the master password it's not regonising this.
I've tried booting of the install disks and I still can't get past the sign in screen. I want to to a fresh install and start a fresh as the computer is quite new and doesn't have a lot of data on it. Can any one help?

Hi Nikw1
First, can you confirm whether you're running OS X 10.4 (Tiger) as mentioned in your profile, or 10.3 (Panther) or earlier (which this specific forum is for)? Each version has different features which may be pertinent to your issue.
Next, let's clarify exactly which password you're stuck on, since there are several possibilities.
"Master password" is actually a specific term for FileVault usage - when you set up FileVault, your login password for each account unlocks your specific account files, and a Master Password can be set on the computer to unlock any of the accounts if you forget their passwords. If you've forgotten both your account password and the master password, there's no way to get access to your files.
Now, if you're not using FileVault (or, if your specific account is not locked with FileVault), you can change your regular account password from the install disks - insert the first disk, reboot holding down C until you see the Apple logo and spinning gear, and then use the Installers (under 10.3) or Utilities (under 10.4) menu and choose Reset Password to reset your account password. As I said above, this will not work for a FileVault-protected account.
A third possibility is an Open Firmware password, which again, you have to make a conscious decision to set up, and exists outside of the operating system - it prevents you from starting up from any other system drive, or the installation disks, without entering the password. So if you hold down C to reboot to the installation disk, you would see this password prompt as soon as the computer restarted. There are ways around it, but let us know if that's the case.
To summarise:
- If you don't have FileVault set on your account, or an Open Firmware password set, you can reset your password from the install disks, with the Reset Password menu;
- If you have FileVault set, but you don't have Open Firmware Password set, you can reinstall the system from the installation disks
- If you have Open Firmware Password set, post back.
Or, if any of the above helps, but you need more details, please post back!
Matt

  • Forgotten master password (but also have file-vault enabled)

Ok to clarify this is not me but my lovely dozy girlfriend and her Macbook...
I did read about deleted some library files somewhere but since she had filevault enabled i hear that method might not work.
To add insult to injury she also didn't make a back up.. So i ask everyone here, is it at all possible to fix this problem and retrieve the data without doing a re-install of Mac OS??
She will bake a cake for anyone who can solve this problem.

If i had any idea how to do that i would certainly try
@Cathy, sorry my typo... delete not deleted. It was reference to a fix where a user on another forum suggested deleting 2 specific files located somewhere in the library folder. Apparently it removes the master password, however it does not work once filevault has been enabled.
@JSD2: Will ask her to try her login password when she gets home.
Thank you all for the speedy responses.

  • Having trouble changing master password as i have forgotten it and can not get it to reset please help

I have tried to remember what the first pass word was and can not get it done. i can not send out emails on both of my email accounts [email protected] or [email protected] as both request password. when i have tried to reset master password it will not except any thing that i am doing. i need to send out emails for my work and having trouble doing the change. Please help

The master password protects saved passwords in Thunderbird and has nothing to do with connecting to your providers server. You need to work with your email provider if you have forgotten your email password. Go to their email help site and look for a link to reset your password.

  • Forgot Master Password, no acct File Vault: How to get rid of Mst Password?

    Hi -
I am embarrassed, mortified, and humbled about having to post this because it's not about 'someone I know' but about something careless that I did.
This morning, I set up a second account with File Vault on my MBA (Late 2010) to keep sensitive files in it. While setting it up, I set a Master Password which I hadn't enabled before this morning. I used the password generator and used one that I dutifully copied on the clipboard with the intention of IMMEDIATELY copying it into my 1Password app. Then I set up the second account with File Vault.
Well, of course, something distracted me, I habitually copied something else on the clipboard, and I lost the Master Password from my clipboard. (I know, I've been kicking myself ever since...)
Here's my question: The Master Password is not protecting any content in File Vault and I would like to disable the forgotten Master Password and set up one that I really will remember (at least, that's the plan!). How can I do this?
I deleted the new account and I have only one other which is the primary administrator account that is not protected by File Vault. Thanks in advance for any help on this!

As explained there, and for obvious security reasons, a new master password created in this fashion way will not unlock any pre-existing FileVault accounts. So resetting the master password is only useful after you have turned off FileVault in all existing accounts, as is true in your case.

  • What do you do if you've forgotten the master password for reset and you've thrown out the gift reciept? HELP??????????

How do you reset the iPad if you've forgotten the master password and threw out the gift reciept?

Contact the person that gave it to you.  See if they have a receipt.
Apple doesn't use the term master password.
There are two different locking mechanisms:  passcode, prevents access to your data,  and activation lock, prevents use of device if stolen.  You do not want the students setting the activation lock.
If the passcode is set & forgotten , you can reload from backup or wipe ( first typed whip ) the device.
iPhone or iPad locked from incorrect passcode.
If you enter the wrong passcode six or more times, you'll see a message that says Ipad is disabled.
See how to restore from backup.  No back up on your computer, click on the triangle before "If you have never synced your device with iTunes, or you do not have access to a computer"

The problem arises when someone sets the activation lock which is set by logging onto your apple id then setting the appropriate option.   DEP is the preferred preventative.  It established your organization as the owner.  The student cannot set an activation log.

If the usual method does not work, you can also do this manually.
    # Open your profile folder, for details of how to find it see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles
    # Close Firefox
    # In the profile folder delete key3.db, signons.sqlite, and if they exist signons.txt, signons2.txt and signons3.txt
That will delete all passwords and remove the master password.

  • I have forgotten my Master password , help !

I have forgotten my Master password , what should I do , please be precise as I am barely computer literate .

Please clarify if you are talking about the Master Password associated with FileVault, or your standard everyday login password.
If you're talking about FileVault's Master Password it is possible to reset the it, but it still requires all users with FileVault-protected accounts to know their passwords. If a user has forgotten his or her login password, and you have forgotten the master password, there is no way to recover the user's data.
If you forget the master password, you can reset it, but you must know the passwords for any accounts with FileVault enabled:
    1.
As an administrator user, delete the master password keychain file (/Library/Keychains/FileVaultMaster.keychain). When the master password keychain is deleted, Mac OS X assumes that no master password is set yet.
    2.
In Security preferences, set a new master password.
    3.
Log in to each account that has FileVault turned on, and use Accounts preferences to reset the password for each account.

  • Reset Forgotten File Vault Master Password

Is there any way to reset the file vault master password?
I must have set it about 5 years ago, and the migration tool has moved it to my new machine. I have completely forgotten, and the hint I left myself has me even more baffled.
I remember all the user/admin accounts, just not the file vault one.
    Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks

The FileVault Master Password is stored in the
FileVault Master keychain. This keychain is located
in /Library/Keychains next to the FileVault
Master X.509 certificate and System Keychain.
You don't have to delete these files to reset the
FileVault Master Password, just move the FileVault
Master Keychain and companion FileVault Master
certificate to another folder. When you open System
Preferences, it will behave as though you never set a
FileVault Master Password, and will allow you to set
    a new one.
My daughter set me up as a user on her computer that I bought for her when she was 18 with limited access to use only the internet. She has got married and moved to New York in March 2007. She says she can't remember her master password and I am unable to use the MAC to its full without her administrator master password. I have no access to system prefernces when I click on File either.

Mac OS 9.1 - forgot password - reset
Here's how to reset your password with Apple Article to reset the password for OS X 10.6.8 and earlier, and 10.7 and later.
Note: Macs can't boot an operating system older than shipped with them, or a different Mac model or different version of the same Mac model's installer disc.  They can use newer retail discs as long as they meet specs.   Lastly no discs were included for Mac OS X 10.7 or later.

How to reset master password for an OLD emac.

Thanks. I wish I had that info earlier. Unfortunately I got a set of OS emac installation disks and tried to install and start over  which basically erased everything. There were 16 disks and when I got to disk twelve it "failed" and asked to try again. I went through the whole process again and same message again.
Now I am stuck with the installer which wants me to install disc 2 to continue installation. It won't let me do anything else.
I know there must be a way to erase and start over but I'm not sure where to start.  Any ideas?

  • Startup disk/master password dilemma....

    Hi there,
I hope someone can help me here,I`ve already looked in the relevant forums for an answer but nothing really helps. I was trying to find out why my father`s pc printer (lexmark) wouldn`t work on my G4.And I was instructed that maybe I didn`t install panther 10.3 correctly. So I tried re-installing it when it asked about the startup disk I selected macintosh HD.Next thing it`s asking me for the master password and apparently I`ve forgotten it,even after the hint becomes visible,I still have no luck,is there any way I can delete it.I`ve already changed the user passsword, but it`s the master that I can`t get passed.

The proper way to reset the pmu is outlined here.

If you did not enable FileVault then it should not be there. It is not the default installation. You, or someone else, has to go the preferences, open Security, put in a password and enable file vault.
It encrypts everything on your hard drive using your password as a "key" for the encryption. Without the key, all the info is hopelessly scrambled.
Once, years ago, I had a similar problem in that I could not get the password reset and the computer would not accept what had been my password for a year. Obviously a file was corrupted that kept my password. I could not use the password reset by the install disk either. Fortunately I had cloned my hard drive and could boot off of the clone and copy files that were not up to date since the last clone.
At this point I'd say you are going to have to do the same. Use or purchase another hard drive, install X to it, copy your user files and re install your applications.
As an alternative, you could try posting to the Unix forum on Apple Discussions and see if anyone there can help you use command line to get a new password.
