Forgotten password...cannot get around an initial log in screen

Hello everyone, thanks in advance for any help that can be offered. I am posting this for my friend who is not really an Apple user and the Macbook was a present to his daughter 2 years ago. Its using OS X 10.4.9.
Long story short, when the laptop was bought two years ago, another mutual friend set up the computer for him. At the time, a user ID and password was generated. For whatever reason my friend did not write it down and went without any updates for two years (his daughter probably could careless about any updates as long as the computer works since she's about 15 now).
A week ago my friend tried to change the password. From what he described to me, he did the password change (but did not enter an user ID) and then turned off the computer manually. When he turned it on again, instructions on the screen asked him to enter the OS X Install Disc. He did so and the computer seemed to automatically start reinstalling for OS off the disc.
Now every time upon boot up, a screen box ("MAC OS X User's Computer") asks for name and password. Below the name and password fields are options for sleep, restart, shut down, and log in. Entering no name and the password he had changed to only makes the screen box jitter so it looks it's an incorrect password. We tried holding "C" at bootup with the boot disc but the laptop still returns to the same screen.
How can I help him get the computer to work? Please help! Thank you.

BDAqua, thanks for your post. Unfortunately what he remembers as the original name and new password doesn't work. I'm pretty sure his memory failed him so going that route doesnt work.
I have tried to restart the computer while holding the C key a few times, but each time the laptop restarts and goes back to the same screen I described asking for user name and password. I don't have any other options to anything except for entering name and password or sleep, restart, shut down.
Is there another way? Please help. Thank you so much.

    Hello,
I recommend you contact AT&T's dedicated BB Support staff (call their front line, request escalation to BB Support) and have them check to be sure that your account with them is correctly configured for this device. Sometimes when switching devices things don't fully automatically move behind the scenes, and only they (ATT) can validate that.

    Hello there dinadinadina,
It sounds like you have modified the password settings for your Gmail account after changing the password. Thats where I would have started too. Next I would restart the device and test it one more time, and then remove and add the account again in Settings:
Get help with Mail on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
    Restart your iOS device.
Delete the affected email account from your device.
Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    Tap the affected email account.
    Tap Delete Account.
    Add your account again.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • MacBook Pro w/10.6.8 requires me to sign in twice at initial log-in screen before loading

My MacBook Pro w/10.6.8 requires me to sign in twice at initial log-in screen before loading.. In addition, after Safari 5.1.7 has been open for a few hours the browser stops loading pages and then the entire computer  freezes and I have to do a forced reboot with the power button. The first push of the power button brings up the four options screen: "sleep, restart, turn off, logout" but they don't work. I have to force shutdown.
I don't have either of these problems from a safe boot. However a boot from a clean "Test" administrator account still requires me to login twice before the desktop loads.
If I login once as either Test or my User Name then choose the " back" button then switch to the other login option before pressig the return key, I only have to login in once at the new login screen.
This problem began after I partitioned my 500GB HD with a 10.6.8 partition--the problem partition-- and a Lion 10.7.4 partition (to avoid iCloud issues with Snow Leopard). The Lion partition does not require double login. I have not done anything yet with the Lion partition except software updates.
I have also been having LCD problems  (according to recent Genius Bar visit, not related to the NVIDIA 8300 problem). Sometimes (every 2-3 times I start the MBP) the MBP will reboot but the screen will be so dark I can't see the cursor and can barely see the desktop. The brightness is set at max and pressing the buttons up/down don't affect the dark screen. Usually I restart and the screen appears normal. This problem occurs with Safe, Test and User Name boots.
    Thanks for any suggestions

I have the same issue and eventually revirted to logging in web wise to emails and have found that its not so bad- but the moment app wants to access mail it slows down and have had had issues again.
I know that Mac products when accessing emails have a tendancey to semi download images- and was told that this can be the issue by a friend( not sure how rellable this is) but have noticed a coralation between the two factors.
I know that there are issues with hotmail when on certain devices ( had the warning form hotmail's site)- but still have yet to be shown how to remove my email from Mail- if yo have any ideas I might try it.
Please if you have any advice of how to remove main email that would be great and it may be a  option for you.

    Hello Juno2162,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with your iPad.  I recommend following steps in the tutorial below to address an issue like this.  I think the step to reset your iPad may be particularly useful in this scenario:
To reset iPad, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
You can find the full tutorial here:

  • Keyboard doesn't light in the initial log-in screen

Hello, I have a MacBook Pro with retina display (late 2013), and since I installed Yosemite my keyboard when I'm in the log-in screen stays off.
Also pressing the keys to enhance lighting nothing happens ...
anyone can help me to bring back my keyboard light even when the screen log in?
    thanks

    Hello fabrizio888,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help with system issues. You may want to consider a PRAM reset which may address the keyboard lighting issue you've described:
OS X Yosemite: Reset your computer’s PRAM
If your Mac doesn’t seem to be remembering your speaker volume, display resolution, or the disk it should be using during startup, you may need to reset your computer’s PRAM.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
Important:    To print these instructions, click the Share button  in the Help window, then choose Print.
Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Option, Command (⌘), P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on your Mac.
Immediately press and hold the Option-Command-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Continue holding the keys down until your Mac restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting your computer’s PRAM, you may need to update your speaker volume, display resolution, and startup disk preferences. For more information about PRAM, see the Apple Support article About NVRAM and PRAM.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

  • Forgotten Password, Cannot enter DFU

    Hi All,
I let my iPod to my young nephew for a little while and he goes ahead and permanently locks the **** thing, the only message I get is 'iPod is disabled, Connect to iTunes'. However, I do not have the computer I first synced this iPod with, so I cannot access it on my computer or iTunes, it just says enter the password and try again. Sadly, I am fully aware of the DFU Factory restore. HOWEVER, I cannot access DFU Mode as either my power button or my home button is slightly damaged. It is an iPod Touch 2nd Gen. Thanks in advance, I would appreciate help ASAP...

    Forgotten Restrictions Passcode Help
You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.
Also, see iTunes- Restoring iOS software.
Placing your device into recovery (DFU) mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
       1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
       2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
                  * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
      3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
charge, and then start with step 2 again.
      4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
      5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
      6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
    Additional Information:
If you have a problem getting into recovery mode then try: RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode.
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.

    5. How to Recover Forgotten iPhone Restrictions Passcode | The iPhone and iPad
If you have forgotten your Restrictions code, then follow the instructions
below but DO NOT restore any previous backup. If you do then you will
simply be restoring the old Restrictions code you have forgotten. This
same warning applies if you need to restore a clean system.
A Complete Guide to Restore or Recover Your iDevice (if You Forget Your Passcode)
If you need to restore your device or ff you cannot remember the passcode, then you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and re-sync the data from the device (or restore from a backup). If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present. Refer to Updating and restoring iPhone, iPad and iPod touch software.
Try restoring the iOS device if backing up and erasing all content and settings doesn't resolve the issue. Using iTunes to restore iOS devices is part of standard isolation troubleshooting. Restoring your device will delete all data and content, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar information, and will restore all settings to their factory condition.
Before restoring your iOS device, Apple recommends that you either sync with iTunes to transfer any purchases you have made, or back up new data (data acquired after your last sync). If you have movie rentals on the device, see iTunes Store movie rental usage rights in the United States before restoring.
Follow these steps to restore your device:
         1. Verify that you are using the latest version of iTunes before attempting to update.
         2. Connect your device to your computer.
         3. Select your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
         4. Select the Summary tab.
         5. Select the Restore option.
         6. When prompted to back up your settings before restoring, select the
Back Up option. If you have just backed up the device, it is not necessary
              to create another.
         7. Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (as long as you've backed up,
you should not have to worry about restoring your iOS device).
         8. When the restore process has completed, the device restarts and displays the Apple
             logo while starting up:
After a restore, the iOS device displays the "Connect to iTunes" screen. For updating
to iOS 5 or later, follow the steps in the iOS Setup Assistant. For earlier versions of
iOS, keep your device connected until the "Connect to iTunes" screen goes away or
              you see "iPhone is activated."
         9. The final step is to restore your device from a previous backup. If you do not have a
backup to restore or have forgotten your restrictions passcode, then restore as New.
If you are restoring to fix a forgotten Restrictions Code or as a New device, then skip Step 9 and restore as New.
