Form created with Livecycle Designer with a SQL database - do you need LiveCycle Forms installed?

Hello,
I'm REALLY hoping someone here can help me, I have spent over four hours on the phone to Adobe in the last 3 days and I'm getting no where what-so-ever. I can't even find out where /how to complain about it! (but thats another story)
Here's my situtation:
I work for a company with approx 140 staff. On one computer, we have Adobe Livecycle Designer ES installed, and we have used that program to create a form which has a link to a SQL database.
The link in this form doesn't work on the other computers which has the basic (free) Adobe Reader. From doing research within these forums
 , I have found that the form will not work on other computers unless they have Adobe Livecycle forms installed on their machines.
What I need to know (and what they cannot seem to tell me when I call), is two things:
Is it correct that in order to use a form created in Livecycle Designer which has a link to a SQL database, that the machine must have LiveCycle forms installed?
How much does Adobe LiveCycle Forms costs?
PLEASE, if you can answer this question, I would REALLY appriciate it....
Thank you!

I presume you are asking if you need Livecycle Forms ES? Forms ES is a component of the livecycle software suite intended as a document service which will be installed on a server within the organisation. A couple of things this document service can do is to render XDP into multiple formats (PDF, html, etc.), execute script server side (for example the database connection) on behalf of the client (reader, etc.), integrate with backend components, etc. So no you do not install this on each client.
For database connections to work, you either have a server with Forms ES installed which can connect on each clients behalf (ie. Client->Forms ES Server->Database), or you have a reader-extended PDF to allow connections to be use in the free basic Reader (i.e. direct calls to the database or using web service calls to your own database components). However, reader-extended pdf would probably require Reader Extensions ES component installed on a server (you once off extend your developed pdf through this and then hand it out to each of the end users). Not sure if the Acrobat Reader extensions will cover this functionality since I have not tried that. I dont think it does. Otherwise you would need full acrobat on each client.
How much database integration is your form actually doing at the moment? read only? Full access? And how many clients do you expect to hit your database? Depending on what you need the form to do, there is always the option to try and build the integration yourself. Do simple http submits from the browser (hosting reader as a plugin) to some component somewhere which in turn hits your database. Wouldnt require additional licensing but alot more development work.
As for cost for the various components, thats a question only Adobe can answer for you since they all sit squarely in the enterprise space and licensing for that is not as simple as off the shelf products.
Maybe someone else has a view on it or has an alternative.

  • Are the fillable pdf forms created in InDesign compatible with iPads?

    I have been producing complex fillable forms using LiveCycle which work fine in most circumstances but we're running into more and more complaints from iPad users who can't open, complete, save the forms. From my research I see that there is an incompatibility with the XFA form created by LiveCycle and the iPad software.
    I design my forms in InDesign anyway and just discovered that I can author the fillable fields using InDesign as well. It would be a giant time saver if I can use one program to create my forms but the question remains, will fillables authored in InDesign be compatible with the iPad? And secondly, Does anyone know if InDesign has equal flexibility in creating all the special objects and their behavior that LiveCycle has?

    I believe that if you name the form field the same name on multiple pages they should fill with the same values.
    However, I'm not a form expert. You would do well to ask these questions in the Acrobat Forms forum here:
    Forms
    While InDesign is being used to create the form, it doesn't really control the process. This is done in Acrobat so that's where you should ask your technical questions.

  • Why not include LiveCycle Designer with Creative Cloud subscription?

    Creative Cloud offers quite a few premier Adobe products - which is great !! So how about Adobe offering LiveCycle Designer with Creative Cloud? It would be awesome ...

    I wish I had enough time to tell you the hell I went through to get a my copy of LC3.
    Long story short: Company purchased CC with CS6 and Acrobat 9 that comes with LC2. Saw a new version of Acrobat X released and LC3. Upgraded to Acrobat X and figured LC3 would come along since we had ALL Adobe applications because of our CC. Installed, noticed my LC2 had been uninstalled due to Acrobat X upgrade... TOOK MANY MANY MANY Custome support call to to find out NO ONE knew anything about LC2 and LC3 being on CC..., ended up with upgrade to LC3 after filing form to receive physical copy. Still angry at the whole thing.
    Not only this, but LC4 is now out and it is not a free upgrade. But this is fine because nothing much changed from LC3.
    So note. LC2 Came with first Creative Cloud due to Acrobat 9, then removed when Acrobat X released. LC2 deleted, no LC3 upgrade.

    You need to buy and install enough RAM to give your computer at least 2GB to run Lion. Lion doesn't run on Core Duo Macs.

    Sounds like you may have a hardware problem since it won't read from DVD, and it is only a year and a half old.  Hopefully all it is, is bad RAM*:

  • Can I combine a form created in Livecycle Designer with a standard pdf to create a new document?

    I have a fillable form that I created with Livecycle Designer along with two standard pdf files.  When I try to combine in Acrobat Pro 10 it identifies the form with XML data and will not allow me to complete the process.  Thanks in advance for any help with this.

    No you cannot... this is one of the things my organization struggles with.  I love livecycle becuase of its dynamic form capabilities, but we have so many other pre-built pdfs in adobe pro that can not be merged with these forms.  It is truly frustrating!!!  wish i had a better answer for you.  Also from the book 'Creating Dynamic Forms with Adobe LiveCycle Designer' page 6... "The PDF files that Designer creates are structurally different than other PDF files...... LiveCycle Designer can edit a PDF form created in Acrobat, but Acrobat can not edit a PDF form created in Designer."  Likewise... XML pdfs do not merge with other pdfs. JoBeth

  • Can I edit a form created in Adobe Designer/livecycle in Acrobat Pro. 8

    Hello
    I have a client that sends me PDF's created in LiveCycle.  IN the past I've used the following information to open these files.
    You can however create a workaround if you absolutely must edit an LCD form in Acrobat. If the form is not a Dynamic form, open the form in Acrobat and choose Document | Extract Pages. (You'll know if the form is not a dynamic form if the Extract Pages command is not grayed out). The extracted pages will not permit accessing the form objects in Acrobat. All scripts in the document are lost and naming conventions for field objects are bizarre. However, the form is editable.
    If you want to convert an LCD dynamic form to an editable Acrobat form, you need to use Acrobat 7 Pro. This won't work in Acrobat 8. In Acrobat 7 Pro choose File | Create PDF | From Web Page. Open the form in the Create PDF From Web Page dialog box. Again, all scripts are lost and field object names are bizarre, but you can edit the form in Acrobat 7 or 8 Pro.
    But these files must be saved as Dynamic pdf's. I have tried saving them as static forms but the Document | Extract Pages is still greyed out when I open in Professional?  What gives how can I get around this most annoying situation?  I need to get the extract pages from being greyed out?
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Acrobat 8 Professional includes LiveCycle Designer 8, so if the form was created with LiveCycle Designer 8 or older, the yes should have the option to edit the form. Acrobat 8 Professional under the menu option 'Forms' will have an option to open the form in LiveCycle Designer. If the form was created with a newer version, there could be some issues with newer features not available in version 8.

  • Inclusion of LiveCycle Designer with Acrobat Pro 8.0

    Are there any restrictions to LiveCycle Designer that's furnished with Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.0 ?
    I've checked the validity of my copy of Acrobat Pro 8.0, including the installation S/N, with Adobe Customer Service.
    After Installation and activation...
    When I launch LiveCycle Designer, I get a time-out message saying that my copy of LiveCycle designer will expire in a few days.
    All the advertising and Adobe-published data sheets give no indication that the copy of LiveCycle Designer is a 30-day eval copy. Customer Service's only comment was I needed to upgrade to Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.0!
    When I asked if the version of LiveCycle Designer that was included in 9.0 was a full and not eval version - all they would say was, "you need to upgrade to 9.0"
    Does anyone have any additional information on this?
    (Thanks)

    J.R.
    I believe I used the vista un-install. Eventually, I wound up un-installing ALL the Adobe products on the machine, then deleted everything under C:\Program Files\Adobe. Finally, I ran Registry Mechanic to try and catch anything the un-install might have missed.
    Since the original posting I've noticed other postings regarding timeout issues with the eval copy of Acrobat. This might be related.
    I'll try support & see what they say.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Javascript problem for form created in Adobe Designer 8.2

    I have redesigned the form using Adobe LiveCycle Designer 8.2 and tried to do merging of xml values into the form. But not successful. Below is sample of the javascript
    trustedImportXFAData = app.trustedFunction (
    function (xmlfilenamename)
    app.beginPriv();
    var re =".pdf";
    var filename = this.path;
    this.importXFAData(xmlfilenamename);
    this.saveAs(filename);
    this.closeDoc();
    app.endPriv();
    This code works find with form created in previous version but not in the new version. I believe it has something to do with the privilege but I do know where I should change.
    For you information, I don't get any error from javascript.
    Thank you

    Hi Paul Guerette,
    I just remembered. I better inform you this as well so you can see the real picture.
    Desktop - OS / Vista Home
    I created the PDF form using Acrobat Livecycle ES 8.2, Then I opened the form in Acrobat Professional 9.0 to enable the save features. Then I open in Reader 9 to make I will be able to save data. Successful
    Laptop - OS / XP Professional
    I have vb.net that calls the js passing xml as parameter.
    jsCode = "trustedImportXFAData(""" + SOURCE_XML + """);"
    Fields = formApp.Fields
    Fields.ExecuteThisJavaScript(jsCode)
    In this machine I have Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Professional. The javascript is inside the \Acrobat 7.0\Acrobat\Javascript\.
    I wonder could this also be, because of the compatibility between 2 different versions.
    Thank you

  • Help needed with secondary DPM backup of SQL databases

    I am having difficulties with some SQL databases not backing up to my secondary DPM server. a number of them are in "Replica is inconsistent" state and a few are in "Recovery Point creation failed" state though they are all OK on the
    primary DPM server.
    The primary server is getting lots of Event ID 4222 errors for MSDPM (DPM has run out of free recovery point space and will fail snapshots) even though the disk allocated looks healthy.
    On the primary, VSSADMIN LIST Writers says the DPM Writer is State: [7] Failed and in non-retryable error state but I can't work out why or how to fix it so far.
    There are no errors on the secondary other than the failure to backup some databases on the primary.
    I am using DPM 2012 R2 on Windows Server 2012 R2 for both primary and secondary.
    Any suggestions would be most welcome.
    Thanks

  • User message entered in Validation settings does not show up in custom list form created in sharepoint designer 2010

    I have a custom list form created in SPD based on EditItem form.  I then set field validation in Validation setting and entered a user message to display when the validation did not pass.
    The validation works in the custom form but the user message never show up.
    I see a similar question posted in 2012:

    Is this still a known bug?   What is the easiest workaround?

    Hi ,
    From the
    above link you mentioned, have you tried using the code line in your custom form?
    Please try the code suggested by sp-achiever and hamish, and see if it could help solve the issue.

    Have you installed hotfix KB245789 or CU contained this kb?
    Please check if KB245789 has fixed this issue as KP2011 suggested in the same post, and please try it in a test environment firstly.

  • Connecting to an Azure SQL Database from a Windows C# Form

    Hi,
    Is it possible to connect to an SQL database in Azure from Visual Studio C# 2010 or 2012? If so how is this done. Is it the same as if you were connecting to SQL Express database with the use of a connection string? Any directions or tutorials would be of
    great help!
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    >>Thanks for the reply Paul, That is disappointing. I am trying to get my students to create a C# application that will connect with a database in Azure. Is there another approach besides SQL that I could use?
    Using SQL Azure will work fine (see below), if the students are familiar with SQL Server and SQL Databases it will be great for them to see how it works in the cloud. As an alternative you could explore Azure Storage, using Table Storage, Blob Storage or
    the new Document Database features.
    >>Azure enforces a firewall that prevents direct external access to the database server. You can add a firewall rule allowing external access, but the rules only support connecting from a fixed IP address because you have to specify the numeric IP
    from which connection will be allowed.
    You can specify ranges here, so you could cover a range of IP addresses. You can even specify 0.0.0.0 to 255.255.255.255 and allow all IP addresses, this could be an option if you don't know where the students will be connecting from, and you are using a
    database for the exercise where you don't care too much about the security.
    When I have run classes I typically use an IP address range, for example XXX.YYY.ZZZ.0 to XXX.YYY.ZZZ.255 if the students are accessing from the same classroom, and the external IP address may vary. You may find that they all have the same external IP address
    if they are on the same internal network.
    Also, with many students accessing the same database, you may get throttling if they place a lot of load on it. This is cool, as you can also teach them about transient fault handling and resource throttling :-).

  • How to use java to create an XML document from an SQL database?

    Hi,
    I'm a complete novice at XML and have only recently started programming in Java.
    I'm currently trying to develop a package in Java 1.1.8 which requires a set of very specifically formatted XML documents. These documents would need to be updated regularly by people with no knowledge of Java and I would like to make it as simple as possible.
    Since the data will already be in an SQL database, I thought it might be possible to generate the XML documents from the data using a small Java application, but I'm not too sure how to go about this or if this is even possible! Any help or pointers in the right direction would be very much appreciated.

    Do you have the option of upgrading to a newer version of the JDK?
    JAXB does what you are wanting very easily. Also there are tools if you don't want to write your own. JAXB is available as early release on Sun's site as is the newest JDK. Otherwise, you have to design a factory and interface that will do this for you (which is what JAXB basically is in a very simplified view).
