Form Submission Problem

Hi,
I've setup a form with 2 items (username,password), both being text fields, with a submit button which will resubmit to the same page. When I try and pass these variable through using the submit button fields, it will NOT pass the values within the two fields (p12_user and p12_pass). they come up as blank in another region I have that will display them.
But....
If instead, I pass in a static string on the "with these values" field, it passes in that static string fine.
I've also setup a branch, and used the same thing, passing &p12_user. and &p12_pass. to two items on page 13, and they are passing, and I can display them in the region that I'm printing them out on.
Why can't I get it to submit to the same page (12) the values that I have in my form on page 12.

Well, I've found the answer to my own question, but it opened up a new one. What is the difference between setting a button to submit and passing the values as opposed to setting up a branch to do the same thing. I COULDNT get the submission of the item values to work when setting the button up to submit to the same page and passing the values, but when I set the target of the button to -NO Target- and then setup a branch to do the same thing it worked. What gives? What is the difference between those two actions.
