Format and install

Hi,
I am using MAC OSX 10.4.8
I want to full format and install my macbook.
but the OSX installation dosent show me the upgrade/erase and install options. It directly goes to installation.
please tell me a way to full format and install my macbook.

After the Language selection, choose Disk Utility from the "Utilities" menu, select the disk drive, click the "partition" tab, click the "Options..." button to choose the GUID partition scheme (needed for Intel Macs), erase the disk, quit Disk Utility, and continue with the installation.

Dear user, can i format and install a fresh copy of Mac OS 10.6.4, with another MacBook CD, because i lost the one that came with mine, thanks.

As you need to be on 10.6 to be able access the App Store to download Lion, either get replacement discs via Applecare (you'll need the MBP's serial number to get the right ones) or get the SL retail disc. I would recommend the Original disc replacement set (assuming they were 10.6) as they carry not onlyApple Hardware Test for your model, but the iLife apps other bundled sftware that isn't on the retail disc.
Once you've installed, and used Software Update to get to 10.6.8, you can then get Lion if you're feeling masochistic.

  • HT201250 If I install a new SSD, there is no recovery partition (Command-R at startup), will TM be able to format and install the OS on my 2011 MBP?

I have a new 2011 MBP that's still pretty clean application and data wise.  I have a new Vertex 4 SSD (256GB) to install and want to know whether I need to have that formatted before I install it or will I be able to use a Time Machine backup to perform the format and restore of the Lion OS X and applications?  Will I have to get an external SSD enclosure to format the SSD before I install it?  Despite the many threads...I am still a little confused as to the exact procedure to use.  Most of the threads say use the recovery partition (well if the SSD is new, not formatted) where does this recovery partion reside?  Please use the KISS principle when responding...

The only negative to not having the original drive will be the work needed to reinstall all the apps and reconfigure to your liking. You will also have to decide whether to stay on Lion (which you should update to 10.7.4, BTW) or bite the bullet and take a leap of faith on Mountain Lion.
In either case, to simplify matters you would do well to concoct a Lion or ML bootable installer on a USB stick. In either case, you need to get the corresponding installer downloaded onto the hard drive and, instead of running it to execute the install, extract the coveted InstallESD.dmg image from which you construct the bootable installer. See here for details: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17782820#17782820  The procedure applies the same to both of the latest cat flavors.

  • [SOLVED] Formatting and installing windows on another partition

    Hello..
I'm planning to reformat my Windows XP partition with GParted and install Windows 7 on it instead.
When I remove the "boot" flag on my /boot partition before doing anything, then format the partition, install Windows 7 on and put the "boot" flag back with GParted live CD, everything should be working fine, shouldn't it?
Or will formating the Windows partition somehow affect Arch (as I'm accessing it with Arch)?
Or will Windows bootloader still overwrite Grub, even if I remove the "boot" flag on it?
    Thanks..

Thanks.. you were right, but everything worked fine. Took me some time to figure out how to restore Grub as I didn't realize I installed it to a seperate partition.

  • Help formating and installing osx tiger

    hi everyone!
can anyone help on how to uninstall osx tiger from a mbp-that is clean clear my hard drive- and installing it again.is this even possible?
    thanx!

    ola aqua!
ok thanx.look in the mean time i was having a look at the documentation on the osx installation guide that came with my mbp and there is a part that explains how to erase the hd.should i follow those steps?they seem very right to me..
    thanx in any case
    star will follow
this is the info i gathered:
    "Erasing and Formatting Your Disk
When you install Mac OS X, you can erase the destination disk. To do this, click Options in the "Select a Destination" pane of the Installer. Select "Erase and Install" and then choose a format. In most cases, choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Important: Because the "Erase and Install" option erases your destination disk, you should back up your essential files before installing Mac OS X.
You can also divide your hard disk into several partitions before you install Mac OS X. To do this, choose Utilities > Open Disk Utility and click Partition. Partitioning erases the entire hard disk, so be sure to back up your essential files first. Follow the instructions above to install Mac OS X and applications.
Note: Before you can install the applications that came with your computer on a partition, Mac OS X must be installed on the partition."
im just not sure i understood the partition thing but ill have a closer look and ill sort it out ,i guess-hope!!
    many thanx

  • New hard drive - format and install OS X

My old hard drive crashed and I replaced it with a new one on my IMac 27" (EMC no 2374). Now I am trying to install it OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard threw a flash drive because I don't have the cd but it freezes. When pressing Option at startup I get the the choice to install Max OS X but when I press enter it freezes with the Apple logo on the screen. The keyboard (wired) dies, also the mouse.
Must I have the cd to format a new hard drive or is there any other way?

You'll need to contact Apple and order a set of Original System Discs for your model iMac for a small fee.
Not sure where you got the USB of Snow Leopard but USB sticks of Snow Leopard only came with the Air model Mac computers and that won't work on a iMac. It is Model Specific as are the discs that come with all Mac computer when Mac computers came with DVD discs or thumb drives.
You'll need them anyway to reinstall the included iLife Apps. Those aren't included with OS X.

  • I had certain bookmarks on Mozilla and thy got deleted because I had to format and install another OS.Where can I find them?I probably didn't have any account

I had some bookmarks on my Mozilla browser.I don't remember the account on whose name it was signed up.But since we had to upgrade the operating system. the bookmarks and browsing history got deleted. How to restore them back?

The data from the old system may have been saved, depending on
how you did the upgrade. Open your file browser to C:\
In the search box, type in Firefox. This may take some time.
Once the search is done, look for Firefox directories, and check
    what folder it is in.

  • Win XP Unable to format hard disk and install

Recently my system has got error about system hive error
    "C:\windows\system32\config\sysem file missing"
So when I tried to reinstall the system the winxp setup says
unable to format my hard drive after I choose C Drive to Quick Format(NTFS) and install option, this note appears
"setup was unable to format drive c:the hard disk may be damaged
make sure the disk is on and properly connected to the computer .If the disk is a SCSI disk, make sure your SCSI devices are properly terminated.See your computer or SCSI adapter documentation for more info"
Thinking that the hard disk(Seagate Barracuda 160GB SATA) might have corrupted I used Seagate seatools to check for error and the test failed. So I replaced the hard disk with brand new WD 160GB SATA hard disk and started installing the winxp. Again I'm facing the same problem. Even I checked with the new connection port.
I'm using AMD Sempron Processor. MSI K9MM-V Motherboard. dynet 512MB RAM.
As the problem is existing even with the new hard disk I think there is no problem with the hard disk or cable. the problem must be something else.
Please help me find the problem and rectify it.
(My hard disk is SATA and No-RAID, No-SCSI, BIOS detects my hard disk and I'm able to create partitions but unable to format and install WinXP)
I've used the same hard disk on another system with MSI Mother Board but it's working fine. Windows XP installs without any problem. I've replaced the hard disk in which the Win XP already exists(Win XP installed on another system with same configuration MSI K9MM-V Mobo, AMD Sempron Processor, 512MB RAM) But it hangs the system and when I restart the system it says,
"Windows Could Not start because the following file is missing or currupt:
    \Windows\System32\Config\System
You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."
I've tried this some 10-15 times every now and then this problem is popping up.
So I think this is not the problem with Hard Disk. It must be the problem with Mother Board. So please help me resolve this issue.

    Good luck!
But please remember what you wrote: "BIOS detects my hard disk and I'm able to create partitions but unable to format and install WinXP",
and what Bas wrote about listing your system components.
Have a minimised system when you install Windows.
A cloned copy of Windows can do this, for example one that a back-up program made.

  • Phantom folders after HD format and clean osx install

I was having frequent checksum and other misc errors while trying to mount DMGs or install programs so i decided to format my drive and do a clean install of snow leopard.
After the format and clean install of snow leopard, I did the following..
    Join my wi-fi network
    Run software update
    Installed Xcode
Installed macports, ruby19, python, scala, macruby
installed bbedit, textmate, yojimbo, coda, transmit, omniplan, omnigraffle, omnifocus
    Run mobileme sync
and then i discovered the following folders in my application folder.
    Access Music
    Adobe Bridge CS5.
These folders used to be in my applications folder along with 100+ other applications before I formatted and installed snow leopard.
None of the applications I installed, after snow leopard are dependent or related to these 2 phantom apps even remotely.
    How could this have happened?
I'm not on drugs, I've developed software for over 25 years and I'm currently an Architect for financial site that serves millions of users well, so I guess I'm not a complete idiot and I'm also not senile. I'm not 40 yet
Can someone offer an explanation for this? The apple tech I mentioned this to, thought I was a moron as I expected he would. He did find issues with my drive using Disk Warrior though even though disk utility and tech tool had found nothing after several runs.

I'm sorry you had that experience with the Apple tech.
Files still remain on the hard drive even after a format if not done with several passes
If you formatted in Disk Utility or used Disk Utility to format, the data that was formatted would be converted into "Free Space" and placed near the end of the drive. There are security options in Disc Utility that prevent this from happening.
Most likely the reason was those folders remained was because the "Free Space" was not wiped. Disc Warrior, a data recovery software was able to locate more files because of this. It does a great job of recovering deleted or formatted data.
I hope this answers your question.

  • Apps won't sync in touch after formating computer and installing Windows 7

Hello, I have a strange problem.
I was using my 2nd gen, iPod touch (16gb) with no problems, sync was good.
I formated my notebook and installed Windos 7 (RC).
Installed iTunes with out any issues.
When I connected my iPod, it re-sync with all the musics and podcasts, but the apps didn't. Actually looks like it does, the sync logs in my ipod, it complains about some apps that are on the ipod and not the itunes, and, after I resolved this issues, looks like it will sync. But it does not. No error messages. Just nothing happens.
    Anyone?
    Thanks

According to the download site, Windows 7 is not mentioned as supported OS:
    Windows Software
Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, or 32-bit editions of Windows Vista
64-bit editions of Windows Vista or later require the iTunes 8 64-bit installer
QuickTime 7.5.5 or later is required (included)
    200MB of available disk space
As this is Windows7RC, wait until it is officially supported.

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • Formatting a new hard drive and installing os in it. Help!

    hi mi name is john.
i recently bought an i book (its an ibook, it only says that on the front screen) on ebay came with a crack screen which i replaced when i started it a folder with a flashing question mark appeared. i researched and found out i it was a hard drive problem. i thought. i replaced it with a 120 GB hard drive. when i started it again the same happened. i also have a macbook pro woking fine i try to use the remote install it didn't worked over the airport i haven't try the fire wire to usb. i also bought original install and restore cd with 10.4.9 os for it. but it doesn't boot from it,
i looked on the support forum i tryed everything in this forum http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570 even Reset the NVRAM / PRAM, except for the erase and install because i cant use the start up disk as i told you it doesn't boot from cd. i press the c key and nothing happens it just keeps flashing. by the way the ram is 250 mb i don't know if thats a problem because the drive is 120 GB, it also doesn't strat up with the cd of my mac book pro 10.6.6
it just doesn't start up from the cd. i know i have to prepare the drive to formatted as HFS+ (Extended), but how i do that now. if i have everything put together.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Lots of issues here.
when i started it a folder with a flashing question mark appeared. i researched and found out i it was a hard drive problem.
Not so much a hard drive problem as a case of no valid operating system found. The underlying reason could be a hard drive issue but maybe somebody just wiped it and didn't put one on.
i replaced it with a 120 GB hard drive. when i started it again the same happened.
Still no operating system until you format the drive and put an OS on.
i also have a macbook pro woking fine i try to use the remote install it didn't worked over the airport i haven't try the fire wire to usb.
A system from an Intel MBP, especially 10.6, will not run a G3 PPC computer.
i also bought original install and restore cd with 10.4.9 os for it. but it doesn't boot from it,
If this is a grey disc that is only intended to work on the computer model with which it was supplied. You need retail version discs which are black in color and harder to find (and more pricey).
i looked on the support forum i tryed everything in this forum http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570 even Reset the NVRAM / PRAM, except for the erase and install because i cant use the start up disk as i told you it doesn't boot from cd. i press the c key and nothing happens it just keeps flashing.
Because it's the wrong kind of disc.
by the way the ram is 250 mb
Tiger minimum RAM requirement is 256MB, but that really is a minimum.
i know i have to prepare the drive to formatted as HFS+ (Extended), but how i do that now.
You need to find a retail version (black) set of discs. Tiger would be better, but you need more RAM. Panther would be okay but there's definitely limitations in terms of available software.
Operating systems you'll have to find on the used market. Expect to pay nearly $100 for Tiger, probably less for Panther.
