Format column in query

Hello,
Can someone teach me how to format the column in the query result so that all columns could fit in one row?
This is my query:
select b.studio_first_name || ' ' ||b.studio_last_name "Actor's Studio Name",
to_char(b.date_of_birth, 'dd Month yyyy') "Date of Birth",
b.real_first_name || ' ' || b.real_middle_name || ' ' || b.real_last_name "Real Name"
from star_actor a, star_actor b
where a.studio_first_name = 'Bill'
and a.studio_last_name = 'Paxton'
and to_char(b.date_of_birth, 'mon') = to_char(a.date_of_birth, 'mon')
and b.studio_last_name != 'Paxton'
order by b.date_of_birth;
and this is the result:
Actor's Studio Name Date of Birth
Real Name
Lisa Eilbacher 05 May 1957
Lisa Eilbacher
Eddie Murphy 03 May 1961
Eddie Regan Murphy
Cate Blanchett 14 May 1969
Catherine Elise Blanchett
Drew Barrymore 22 May 1975
Drew Blyth Barrymore
The real name could not fit in the same row as the studio name and date of birth. how can I decrease the size of actor's studio name and real name? anyone?
thank you for your help

or use a TRIM()
select Trim(b.studio_first_name || ' ' ||b.studio_last_name) "Actor's Studio Name",
       to_char(b.date_of_birth, 'dd Month yyyy') "Date of Birth",
       Trim(b.real_first_name || ' ' || b.real_middle_name || ' ' || b.real_last_name) "Real Name"
  from star_actor a, star_actor b
where a.studio_first_name = 'Bill'
   and a.studio_last_name = 'Paxton'
   and to_char(b.date_of_birth, 'mon') = to_char(a.date_of_birth, 'mon')
   and b.studio_last_name != 'Paxton'
order by b.date_of_birth;

  • The issue with using the multiple columns sub-query in WHERE clause

    Hi All,
    my database version is 10.2.
    the problem i am trying to deal with is that when I use multiple column sub-query in the WHERE clause of the SELECT statement, the actual row number returned from the sub-query is different from the whole statement.
    And what I found is that, whenever there is NULL in any of those columns returned from the SUB-QUERY, the outer query will just return NULL for that whole row.
    Here is an example:
    select empno, ename, job, mgr, hiredate, sal, deptno from EMP
    intersect
    select empno, ename, job,  mgr, hiredate, sal, deptno from t;
    7782     CLARK     MANAGER     7839     09-JUN-81     2450     10
    7839     KING     PRESIDENT  NULL  17-NOV-81     5000     10
    7934     MILLER     CLERK     7782     23-JAN-82     1300     10
    select * from EMP where (EMPNO, ENAME, job, MGR, HIREDATE, SAL, DEPTNO) in (
    select empno, ename, job, mgr, hiredate, sal, deptno from EMP
    intersect
    select empno, ename, job,  mgr, hiredate, sal, deptno from t);
    7782     CLARK     MANAGER     7839     09-JUN-81     2450          10
    7934     MILLER     CLERK     7782     23-JAN-82     1300          10     If I specifically deal with the NULL situations for the columns which might return NULL, I can get the result right.
    select * from EMP where (EMPNO, ENAME, job, NVL(MGR,-1), HIREDATE, SAL, DEPTNO) in (
    select empno, ename, job, nvl(mgr,-1), hiredate, sal, deptno from EMP
    intersect
    select empno, ename, job,  nvl(mgr,-1), hiredate, sal, deptno from t);
    7782     CLARK     MANAGER     7839     09-JUN-81     2450          10
    7839     KING     PRESIDENT  null   17-NOV-81     5000          10
    7934     MILLER     CLERK     7782     23-JAN-82     1300          10     the problem is that, I feel this is a very lame way of handling it.
    So, I wonder or am asking if there is any better or standard way to do it?
    any help would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    As you discovered, INTERSECT treats NULL as a value, but IN does not.
    What you did with NVL is one way to handle the situation. If there was a chance that any of the columns could be NULL, then you might prefer something like this:
    select      *
    from      EMP
    where      ( EMPNO      || '~' ||
           ENAME      || '~' ||
           job           || '~' ||
           MGR           || '~' ||
           TO_CHAR (HIREDATE, 'DD-MON-YYYY HH24:MI:SS')
                    || '~' ||
           SAL           || '~' ||
           DEPTNO
         ) in (
              select  EMPNO      || '~' ||
                     ENAME      || '~' ||
                   job     || '~' ||
                   MGR     || '~' ||
                   TO_CHAR (HIREDATE, 'DD-MON-YYYY HH24:MI:SS')
                        || '~' ||
                   SAL      || '~' ||
                   DEPTNO
              from     emp
             intersect
              select  EMPNO      || '~' ||
                     ENAME      || '~' ||
                   job     || '~' ||
                   MGR     || '~' ||
                   TO_CHAR (HIREDATE, 'DD-MON-YYYY HH24:MI:SS')
                        || '~' ||
                   SAL      || '~' ||
                   DEPTNO
              from      t
             );This assumes that you can identify some string (I used '~') that never occurs in the strings in these tables.
    This is implicitly converting the NUMBERs. That's usually not a good thing to do. but explicitly converting them would make this even more tedious.
    You should explicitly convert any DATEs to strings, however. Depending on your default format, and your data, you might get away with implicit conversions even for DATEs, but don't bet on it.
    If you had to do this often, you might consider writing a user-defined function:
    delimited_string (empno, ename, job, mgr, hiredate, sal, deptno) would return a string like
    '7839~KING~PRESIDENT~~17-NOV-1981~5000~10'
    This will make the coding easier, but beware: it will make the execution slower.

  • Create Column in Query

    Using FK: 0balance
    I need to create a Column in Query to return the following
    Full Year Forecast
    Forecast to the end of the financial year, variable dependent on plan selected (Q1,2,3  or 4). If select Q2,3, or 4 then use Actual figures for months until the start of the plan. Eg if select Q2 then full year forecast will be Actual for April, May and June plus Forecast for July to March.
    Anyone have any ideas please?
    thanks

    Hi Smith,
    You can follow following approach.
    1. Create 2 KF's (KF1 & KF2) one for actual & other for Forcast (using restriction - Plan/Actual & for Quarter / Month).
    2. Use variables , say VAr1 & VAR2 (with Customer Exits) to populate values for Month/Quarter (for characteristic used in restriction in step 1) .
    3. Value for variables in step 1 will be populated based on value entered for variable VAR3 (this is for user entry Q1,2,3,4).
    4. Create KF3 as KF1+KF2.

  • Mysterious formatting columns table

    Hi all,
    i don't post a problem, but a curiosity. I'm managing a Oracle BI environment developed by others, so many aspects are unknown for me. I've observed that if i make an Answers request dragging and dropping any columns from my subject area, any of them are still formatted. In detail, if i drag and drop a column that contains double values it is formatted, otherwise if (from same table) i drag and drop a column that contains integer values it isn't formatted. All columns have same class "TableHdg".
    I ask me, where is specified this behaviour? In css style? But how a css style can distinguish between a double and integer values to decide how formatting columns?
    Thanks

    Hi,
    thanks for your reply. I've formatted hundreds of tables but i've never noted these options. Incredible!!!!!!!!!. Can you tell me, when i click on "Save as the system-wide for this data type" (for example), where Oracle BI saves formatting options? In a css file? What?
    Thanks

  • Formatted search with Query auto update

    hi all,
    I have created 2 UDF's at title level in marketing document, and assigned Formatted search with query to it with auto refresh when posting date field changes. One UDF gets updated automatically and the other one doesnt.
    any one can guide me on this.
    regards

    Edited by: Rui Pereira on Aug 8, 2008 11:47 AM

    Hello Salman,
    I took the effort to understand you question but I am not quite sure if I have all the pieces of the puzzle yet.  I can see Jeyakanthan has already grilled you with questions and you have answered all of them.
    UDF1 - is this se to Auto Refresh - Refresh regularly - on Posting Date?
    UDF2 - On which field is this set to Auto refresh?
    UDF3 - On which field is this set to Auto refresh?
    One thing to note when you have two fields with FMS and the second one dependent on the value of the first, the second one does not auto refresh because it cannot detect the Field change on the First UDF.
    This is probably what you are experiencing.
    If you don't mind I would like to understand the business reason for the 3 UDF's and what each one is for. There might be other options to look at to achieve the same result.
    Let me know

    Hi Experts,

    Due to selecting XMLTYPE column in query.
    select *
    from RANGE where WSNO = 3
    order by PREFERENCE desc;
    The total number of records in the table is 1060.
    Even it's a very small table why it's taking 45 seconds.
    Can anybody please help me on how to get the output in 2 to 3 seconds.
    I want all the columns from the table.
    The problem only with REST column XMLTYPE.
    If I am not selecting this column I am getting output in 1 to 2 seconds.
    I am posting the execution plan and DDL for table and index.

  • Does Coloring Of Rows and Column in Query effect the Performance of Query

    Hi to all,
    Does Coloring of Rows and Column in Query via WAD or Report designer , will effect the performance of query.
    If yes, then how.
    What are the key factor should we consider while design of query in regards of Query performance.
    I shall ne thankful to you for this.
    Regards
    Pavneet Rana

    There will not be any significance perofrmance issue for Colouring the rows or columns...
    But there are various performance parameters which should be looked into while designing a query...
    Hope this PPT helps you.

  • Format Column Header in Crosstab Query in Crystal Reports for Enterprise

    Hi
    I am using Crystal reports for Enterprise and I would like to format the Column header of a crosstab query one block of colour say light blue.  However I cannot select the header in isolation to the rest of the cross tab.  All I can select is either column text boxes, which doesnu2019t look good formatted as a different colour to the background of the crosstab.  Or I can only select either entire column or the entire row, which kind of defeats the object of formatting just the column header itself.  Is there a way to isolate the column headers so I can format just the header, as the report is looking extremely bland all in white?
    Many Thanks in advance
    Regards
    Neil

    Alright, here's what you need to do:
    1) RIght-click one of the Column Headers and select 'Format Result Object Element' > Appearance > click on the formula button (fx) beside 'Fill' and use this code:
    if currentrowindex < 0 then crBlue
    You wanted light blue right? So, the rgb value for light blue or sky blue would be 135-206-250. So, you can change the color by modifying the formula like this:
    if currentrowindex < 0 then color(135,206,250)
    If this is not the exact blue you're after, just google!
    Hope this helps!

    what is the best way to do this ?
    Thanks in advance

    Preethi,
    I will guess from your reference to using "Advanced Table" that you are talking about OA Framework, in which case, you should be asking on the OA Framework forum.

  • How can I access user defined column(in query) inside the trigger?

    Hi
    I have 3 unions and each query displays different records on some criteria. I also have a column hard-coded
    Ex:
    select a.col1, a.col2,
    add as update
    from table1 a
    where ...
    union
    select a.col1, a.col2,
    change as update
    from table1 a
    where ...
    union
    select a.col1, a.col2,
    del as update
    from table1 a
    where ...
    And I need to display a column in the report only if update is Add. I was thinking of writing a format trigger for that field. But I do not know how can I access this user defined column named update in the trigger?
    Any help?

    Try ":update" minus the double-quotes. Ex:
        IF :update = 'add' THEN
          RETURN(TRUE);
        ELSE
          RETURN FALSE;
        END IF;
    You'll want to place your hard-coded values in single-quotes. Ex:
        select a.col1, a.col2,
        'add' as update

  • Oracle forms- Number formatting in post query

    I have a column called num_value in a table.
    When the user retrieves the data in post query I need the following formatting
    For WBC if the value entered is 3 I want to show in the forms as 3.0 etc....
    So I have a decode statement
    Cursor C5 is select task_desc,decode(substr(task_desc,1,3),'WBC',to_char(num_value,'fm99.0'),
    'RBC',to_char(num_value,'fm99.90'),
    'HGB',to_char(num_value,'fm99.0'),
    'HCT',to_char(num_value,'fm999.0'),
    'PLT',num_value,num_value) as value,alpha_value
    from qc_task_poch_results A,QC_TASKS B
    where a.task_id = b.task_id
    and a.procedure_id = 1127
    and drive_id = 'DRV5528593'
    Begin
    Open C5;
    Fetch C5 into :qc_task_results_poch.num_value
         ,:qc_task_results_poch.alpha_value;
    Close C5;
    End;
    But I amm not getting the formatting.
    The column in the form is non database .
    When I run in toad, I get the right formatting.
    TASK_DESC|VALUE|ALPHA_VALUE
    WBC count|3.0|
    RBC count|2.33|
    HGB count|6.0|
    HCT Count|17.0|
    PLT count|56|
    Any help is appreciated

    You are formatting your data in your select statement not in Forms. Consequently, any format mask you may have on the Item where the data will be display will reformat your data to match the Item's format mask.
    Do you have the format mask property defined on the Item? What is the data type of the item?

  • Date Format in PeopleSoft Query Expressions

    Hello,
    I have devloped a query where one of the field has date field. The format that's showing is 'MM/DD/YYYY'. We want the format in 'MM-DD-YYYY'. I tried to create a expression using to_char(A.fieldname,'MM-DD-YYYY'). But its not working. Is there any other way we can get the format in 'MM/DD/YYYY' from query manager.
    Thanks,
    -Sam

    Hi Sam,
    PS Query will automatically wrap date fields in the select list with TO_CHAR(...,'YYYY-MM-DD'), even in an expression. However, it only does this when the fieldname includes the alias, so in your expression you could use
    to_char(fieldname,'MM-DD-YYYY') (no A.) as long as it doesn't cause an ambiguous reference (i.e. there are no other tables in your query with "fieldname" as a column). Otherwise, you could write your expression to convert the TO_CHAR result back to a date and then use TO_CHAR again. i.e.
    TO_CHAR(TO_DATE(A.fieldname,'YYYY-MM-DD'),'MM-DD-YYYY')If you look at the resulting SQL, this will become
    TO_CHAR(TO_DATE(TO_CHAR(A.fieldname,'YYYY-MM-DD'),'YYYY-MM-DD'),'MM-DD-YYYY')which should give the desired result.
