Format & Formula Bars

Question is there any way to enlarge the Formula Bar and Format Bar in Numbers? The tools are so small and difficult to read.

Missing Tool, Format and Formula Bars

I am new to Numbers and cannot figure out how to bring up the Tool Bar, the Format bar and the Formula bar also the Sheets pane on a spreadsheet. Is it because I cannot find the "View" button?

Hi Norm,
Well, if you don't have the Toolbar showing, then you won't find the View button.
Fortunately, that's not the only place to find "Show Toolbar."
You can also toggle the display of the Toolbar using the keyboard shortcut shown in the menu—option-command-T.

This problem occurs in Logic Express version 7.
(I am using MacOS version 10.4.2 on an eMac)
I am currently compiling and editing a large score for a big band composition consisting of 22 parts:
Flute 1

Clarinet 1
Clarinet 2

Trombone 2
Trombone 3
Trombone 4
Trumpet 1

Keyboard
Electric Bass
Percussion 1 (Kit)
Percussion 2 (Aux)
I am creating the score in a separate file, and I am combining parts into 1 stave each by instrument like this:
Flute 1 & 2
Clarinet 1 & 2
Alto Sax 1 & 2
Tenor Sax 1 & 2
Baritone Sax
Trombone 1 - 4
Trumpet 1 - 4
Guitar
Keyboard (2 staves)
Bass
Percussion
Each instrument, with the exception of keyboard which has 2 staves, consists of one stave, making up systems of twelve staves each. By sizing down each score style to 2,
I have managed to fit 2 systems onto each page, therefore significantly reducing the amount of paper needed.
The problem comes when organising the layout of my score,
in particular, the line breaks. Using layout:global format, I have limited the maximum number of bars per line to 8, both in the page edit and normal score mode.
I am trying to divide up my score so that there are 8 bars per system. Using the white arrow tool, I am dragging bars up and down in order to achieve this.
However, when I get 30 odd bars in, I discover a system with 12 bars crammed into it - and even printing it off, it is clear that the system could benefit with less bars; the notation is squashed up together and not very easy to read.
THIS IS THE ACTUAL PROBLEM:
So I tried using the white arrow to move the last 4 bars down onto the next system, and a bug occurs where I end up with about 20 bars on the system, oddly distorted, the first few bars of which are squashed up together at the beginning of the line, and the last bar of which is stretched far off the right hand side of the page out of view. Then the next 20 or so bars are no where to be seen (probably far off the right hand side of the page) before the system below.
If you dont know what I am talking about, I could provide a screenshot if you request.
I have tried everything to get 8 bars on that particular system; dragging the stretched bar downwards, dragging squashed bars downward, moving bars down 1 by 1, moving bars onto the system above, moving bars away from the system below (to make room for the 4 bars that I want to move from above), adding more bars and dragging them down, but none of these methods have worked. I am either stuck with 12 bars crammed onto one system and 4 bars on the next or an oddly distorted version of the system which cannot possibly be read. Even when I settle with the unsatistactory former, I encounter further problems on subsequent systems below, some systems of which are already distorted.
All I want is to have 8 bars per system, it should not be too much to ask! The layout:global format:maximum-bars-per-line calculation seems to be redundant, even when I reset the default line breaks - it just does not automatically set 8 bars per line, which it should do. Is there not an option to determine bars individually by number onto their respective lines, without having to use the white arrow graphic layout tool?
The problem is extremely frustrating, and it is preventing me from completing, presenting and handing in a score for my university music composition.
I have no other score producing software, and starting it
from scratch on paper is going to take me weeks, because it consists of 830 12/8 bars in 22 parts, and I need to get it ready by next term!
Any help would be extremely helpful and much appreciated, especially a patch or a useful way round. It could be related to memory, or hard drive space, as I have experienced similar problems in the past, where my score has been stretched off the page during a time when I have had little disk space...and this is a very large piece of music which might stretch the score capabilities of Logic.
If so, has anyone got any suggestions?

nope just cutting should work.
here are some things to try:
1. try assigning a different score style. for the regions. duplicate and then adjust the default ones if necessary.
2. try creating a new instrument set. in fact delete them and make a new one (use the key command: create instrument set from selected)
3. it may be a formatting problem so check:
in global layout constant spacing (try 8 or 9) and proportional spacing (try 45 or so). then try factory defaults.
4. try copying and pasting the midi into a brand new region and looking at the score for that.
5. try fiddling with the layout tool drqagging bars up or down.
normally simply cutting the region of just one object is enough to force a redraw. maybe try it on all of the regions. what happens when you double click on a region?

Storing a conditional formatting formula in a variable

I have a conditional formatting formula that exceeds the 393 character limit for Word fields. I've placed the formula directly into the template table, and it works correctly. But now, of course, there are several hundred characters of formatting information in that cell, along with the data field. Not pretty.
Is there a way to store that long formula into a variable, and then refer to that variable as the conditional format? I'm getting stuck on the right-arrow tags (>). I can't figure out how to include those in the string and store them in the variable.
Here's a simplified example of what I'm trying to do:
<?xdoxslt:set_variable($_XDOCTX,'myvar',"<?if:number(Sales) gt 1000000?><?attribute@incontext:color;'red'?><?end if?>")?>
The inclusion of the right-arrow tags (>) in the string causes a failure when attempting to Preview. If I replace all of the right-arrow tags with something else, like the number 8 ...

... the string is stored in the variable, and I can refer to it in the template table by using <?xdoxslt:get_variable($_XDOCTX,'myvar')?>. It's useless, of course, but it works correctly. The string is stored in the variable, and the contents of the variable appear in the template.
So how can I imbed the right-arrow tags in this text string? Use an escape character? Imbed the ASCII code? I'd do either of those in a heartbeat if I could figure out the right syntax.

Error while processing conditional formatting formula in crosstab

This conditional formatting formula must return one of the following Color Constants: ' A number, currency amount, boolean, date, time, date-time, or string is expected here. Details: errorKind
The above error is displayed on the the Business Objects Report Server when running my report.
The XI server version information is as follows:

My IDE is Crystal Reports 2008.
The error is being generated for the following conditional formatting formula which is in my crosstab:

This formula is applied via the Crosstab "Format Field>Font" tab. In the report developer (Crystal 2008) the report runs without error. When deployed to the server it fails with the above error.
Heres the details of {@concatAppTypeAppMethod}:

The crosstab is structured as:
Row = {@concatAppTypeAppMethod}
Column = {@getMonth}
Summary = Count of {@concatAppTypeAppMethod}
Details for {@getMonth}:
right(totext(year({Command.ACN_COMPLETED_DATE}),"#"),2) + totext(month({Command.ACN_COMPLETED_DATE}),"0#")
The above functions Row i.e. {@concatAppTypeAppMethod} and {@getMonth} use fields from the SQL command.
{@getMonth} parses the ACN_COMPLETED_DATE field, obtains the record month and year and concatenates these as a string which can be displayed as follows in the crosstab:
May-08, Jun-08 etc.
{@concatAppTypeAppMethod} parses the APPLICATION_METHOD field and obtains the application filing method i.e. Online or Internally and concatenates the pretext "Designs filed " to the filing method (also a string).
I have tried various combinations of whilereadingrecords, whileprintingrecords and evaluateafter() with no success. The problem occurs because the conditional formatting formula is being executed before the records being formatted are ready.
I believe this is a problem with the crystal reports software and/or XI server.
Please prove me wrong.

Thanks for your prompt answer! Can you confirm? Is it because I'm using calculated members in the report and these are not support by the XI server specified in my error report above?
If so, do you have any suggestions with regard to how I might be able to create a graph with the following attributes:
Show summary (count) of records per month per application method (i.e. online or internal. this is a database field retruned by the SQL command). In addition I need to add a series to the graph that shows the totals number of records per month irrespective of the relative application method (i.e. sum of online and internal) and finally I need to show the total number of online applications (i.e. application method = online) as a percentage of the total number of applications for the month.

Can someone tell me where in numbers 3.0 the formula bar is, or how I can make it visible?

I've updated to the new numbers (3.0) and acutally it looks not back. But there is one point that really annoys me. I cannot find the formula bar and also I could not find in the menu where I can make it visible.
Any hints from the community?

It only looks that way because the movable formula editor window starts out covering the cell. You can move it out of the way and it won't look like the cell any more.

I had the same issue for several days (and several reboots). During that time I found I could print the spread sheet as a pdf, though I couldn't see it except cell by cell.
Suddenly the problem disappeared. I never did know why the problem appeared nor why it disappeared.
In the interim I ran the disk utility several times and repaired permissions twice. That may have helped, but I don't know.

Format Fonts Bar

Hi all:
A funny thing happened yesterday. I was in the middle of creating a Keynote presentation and I lost access to my format font bar.
When I use the toggle command ( + T) the program seems to think the toggle is working as it switches back and forth between “Show Fonts” and “Hide Fonts”. When I use the “Format” pull down menu I have the same result. BUT the edit bar never shows up?!? At first I thought it was be a slave and master screen issue but I think I have proven to myself that this is not the problem.
When I have the Stickie Notes app open I can hit  + T and get the font bar so I know it is there somewhere.
Anyone have any ideas?

I had something similar happen to me a while back, although I think it was the Colors palette. Turns out I'd somehow moved the palette very near the edge of the screen; it was, as you suggest, alternating between "showing" and "hiding", but it took me a while to realize why I couldn't see it. If the previous suggestion to restart Keynote doesn't solve the problem, or you encounter it again, you might try playing with your monitor resolution to see if you can find the palette near the edge of the screen.

Displaying "N/A" in report fields where Number data is not valid using a formatting formula

I have many reports which are populated by "Number" data. However, there are certain charts and tables where the number data is not appropriate and the summation of such data does not add value to the report. In these instances I would like to display "N/A", however the formula I am using keeps giving me an error that I need to use a "Number" data type. Please note this is a formatting formula.

DO{TREND.EPTP1} = 'N/A' AND{TREND.EPTP2} = 'N/A' AND{@Trend %} = 'N/A' WHILE {TREND.POS2} = 'TOTAL';
Can anyone assist me with displaying "N/A"?

I accidentally closed the Pages text formatting menu bar.

I accidentally closed the text formatting menu bar that comes up when select text to change font size, style, etc. I cannot find out how to restore it so that it automatically opens when I select text.

It isn't gone, just minimized. The top of the screen should have a thick dark brown bar with "Documents", "Undo", etc. Under that should be a thinner lighter brown bar. Touch that thinner bar and the formatting bar should reappear.

EXCEL - when I click in a cell or in the formula bar, the page jumps down.

It doesn't happen in all documents... just some. I copied the info to a new doc and it didn't do it right away, then started happening.
Macros are off.

Chart (Graph) Font Name - Formatting Formula

Hi,
I am displaying chart in report, and I have requirement to select (format) font name with some condition (e.g.. As per database language, if database is english - Font Name: "Times New Roman", if database version is Spanish - Font Name: "Arial" etc.)
Currently I am trying to add "Font Name" formula for x-axis in Graph by "Formula Fields -> Formatting Formulas -> Report Footer -> Report Footer A -> Graph2" and Right click "New Font Formula -> Font Name -> Use Editor", but nothing happens. I tired and noticed It works for "Background Color" .
Please let me know, how can I add Font Name formula for Graph.

You are right, I also want to format x-axis field values but how can I reach (access) to "x-axis" field formatting formula for Graph. In Formula Workshop I can find hierarchy upto Graph level only, I cannot find any node such as X-axis, Y-axis under it.

Adding '1' in formula bar

Hi all,
actually im having a member IFRS, under it there are 120 members all are level 0 members, and cube is ASO.
now my problem is, IFRS is not agg. properly it is not not showing correct agg. digit of 120 members,
so my SME has suggested to add *"1"* in Formula bar IFRS members, after adding it sittuation went more worst then before
IFRS mem. is showing 120 as a value, i dont understand what went wrong,
can any one suggest proper solution for this.

Hi Girish, this problem can be solved by modifying the page template in your application. Once you know which page template is being used on the page(s) you can navigate to the template via
1) Shared Components -> Themes -> View Templates
2) Then click on the page template name
3) Goto the Navigation Bar Entry item and change it from
<a href="#LINK#" class="t2navbar">#TEXT#</a>
to
<a href="#LINK#" class="t2navbar"><img src="#IMAGE#" title="#ALT#" alt="#ALT#" class="t2navbar" />#TEXT#</a>
That will provide the necessary image tag.

I know this one has been doing the rounds but does anyone know how to make the Excel Formula Bar visible! the arrow is ticked on the toolbar but it won't appear
