How do I format an external HDD from either FAT32/NTFS into HFS or HFS+, I care not which but interested in the differences between HFS/HFS+

Use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to erase it in the Mac OS Extended(HFS+) format; the standard HFS format is only there for backwards compatibility and shouldn't be used unless you have a specific reason to use it. All Mac OS versions released in the past 10 years can use Mac OS Extended disks.

Lyssa already said how you need to the updater. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough on that part. It may help if you add some details about your computer and OS. Maybe your Mac/OS does not meet the requirements ?
BTW you can have your set up shown in a signature below each message you post, click "Preferences" in the right hand pane on the Apple Discussions pages and select "My Computer". It makes troubleshooting for other users more easy if they are able to see what your computer and OS are.

I have a 5th generation iPod video that was originally formatted with my old Dell PC laptop - I have just recently purchased a new MacBook Pro and want to format/update my iPod for it to work properly with my new Mac.
How can I go about doing this without having to restore my factory settings and losing all of my songs?

The windows formatted iPod should still work on the MacBook Pro, now make sure you hold down Command + Option when you connect the iPod and continue holding them until they are completely mounted. What this does is does not allow the computer to update the iPod, and if a pop-up comes up, do not allow it to update the iPod. Now, we can back-up the songs. Yamipod is great for this.

Now, if you still have your old computer, i suggest using your iPod in disk mode to put all your songs on it, and import them into iTunes on your Macbook Pro, and to re-format the iPod so that it will be Mac formatted.

Restore the iPod in iTunes for Mac. Restoring will erase and reformat the iPod's hard drive, reload the software with the Mac version and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. I tried to re-format an external (LaCie) hard drive from Windows to Mac using the Erase option in the Disk Utility, but it would not go through. The error message is not informative; it just states the formatter encountered an error and was unable to finish the operation. Any pointers on how to solve this issue? Thanks!

you should use the 'Partition-Tab' from Disk Utility and then click on the 'Option'-Button to set the partition Table to GPT (GUID partition Table).
Sounds to me like the external HD is till using the MBR (Master Boot Record) common to Windows PC on which you can't make a partition using the 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' file system.

You can use your iPod formatted as it is as Macs can read Windows formatting. I've seen a few posts on the forum where there have been problems but these would be the exception. Have you thought about how you are going to get your music from your PC to your new Mac? Office for Mac, http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products, can open/edit/create Office documents.If your external drive is formatted NTFS then you can copy the Office documents to your computer and work on them. You won't be able to save the files back to your NTFS formatted drive. But you will be able to save the documents to your internal drive. You can move all the external files to your internal drive then format the external drive for Apple. Then you can copy the files back to your external drive for ongoing use.

If you just want to connect and use the iPod on the Mac then set it to manual update on your PC first. The content of iTunes and the iPod are not syncronised in this mode so the two can be different. You can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:

Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod
Macs can read Windows drives, the iPod shuffle for instance comes Windows formatted and is fully supported (you can update the firmware or restore it on the Mac and it retains it's Windows formatting). Other iPods (such as a 5th Generation or Classic for example) can be used in Windows format on a Mac but have to have the firmware updated or be restored on a PC to maintain the formatting. If however you don't intend using the iPod on a PC again you'll need to transfer your library from your PC so you can restore and reformat the iPod and keep it's firmware updated.
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your new iTunes directly from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. I've been using my iPod (30GB) with Windows and am just now switching everything to a new MacBook Pro. Do I need to do anything to switch my iPod from Windows to Mac, or does it just sync with the new Mac without my having to do anything?

Macs can read Windows formatting so your iPod should work Fine on your MacBook. However if you don't intend using the iPod on Windows again you should consider restoring it and formatting it on the Mac. If you keep it in Windows format you'll have to connect it back to a PC to make any firmware updates otherwise the formatting will be changed. One other thing, if you haven't transferred your music from the PC to the Mac you won't be able to sync the iPod if you do you'll lose what's on it. To be sure you don't accidentally erase the content you should set the iPod to manual update until your music is on the Mac.
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting to your new computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Connect the iPod. Decline any offers from iTunes to sync it, if this is the first time the iPod has been connected to the Mac. When the iPod appears in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES, select it there. Over to the right, on the Summary tab, there is a Restore button. Click it. Follow the prompts.
Restore will erase the iPod and install the latest software, using default settings. If it is connected to a Mac when you do the Restore, it will use Mac formatting during the erase. That's basically the only difference. The software is the same, so it is not really "reprogrammed."

Only Microsoft's Office for Mac 2011 14.4.8 will work on your Windows Office files in their native document format. Anything else, and particularly Apple's Pages, Numbers, and Keynote will perform translation on open, and export. This can, and will, introduce differences to your original documents, especially when sharing with others in the Windows Office 2010/2013 applications.

The current iterations of Apple's Pages, Numbers, and Keynote are not what I would term business/professional grade applications. Apple updates them infrequently, ignores user friendly features, omits others, and has introduced default backwards incompatibility between Yosemite and prior OS X releases of these applications. Read the reviews in the OS X App Store. Even for free with a recent Mac purchase, these products will transform your mood.
The free LibreOffice is aggressively developed and designed as an MS Office replacement suite. There are occasions where it can open documents that Office for Mac, and Apple's products ignore. Extensive PDF manuals for the individual applications. Unlike Word, you can have two-up page viewing with a button click, or edit multi-page PDF. There is a forms designer. It can open nearly any document including MS Publisher and Visio documents from the Windows space. I use it.
MS Office 2015 Preview for Yosemite is available, but as its title would suggest, it is not done yet, and some features are missing. I created a single-page Word document with a DRAFT watermark. Only LibreOffice v4.4.1 was able to open this document and preserve the watermark.

I am currently using Photoshop Elements 8 on Windows 7. After several years of use, I am self taught and adequately proficient for an amateur. What I didn't realize (until I started researching my upcoming migration on the Internet) is that I actually use PE8 for two functions: digital asset management and digital editing.
Regarding Digital Asset Management: My research leads me to understand that PE on MAC does not provide the same level of organizational capability that I am used to having on Windows, instead providing Adobe's Bridge which does not look very robust. Furthermore, iPhoto, which come on MAC will not support the hierarchical keyword tagging that I require to organize my library of photos. The two SW applications which I am thinking of switching to are either Aperture or Adobe's Lightroom. Frankly, I'm thinking that it would be smoother to stay within the Apple product line.
So the remaining question is whether Aperture will support my digital editing needs. The tweaks that I do to my photos are not very complex (no, I do not want to put people's heads on other animal bodies). But could someone who uses Aperture tell me whether It will allow me to do the following kinds of edits?:
- If I have a photo where someone's face is too shadowed, can I lighten just that person's face, and leave the rest of the photo as-is?
- if I have a photo where the background is cluttered (eg, 2 people in front of the Parthenon which is undergoing renovation), can I remove just the construction cranes?
- Can it splice together several separate photos to give a panoramic?
If, once I get Aperture, I find that it cannot enable the kinds of editing that I do, I would probably get PE11 in the future. However, if people in this forum tell me that Aperture will definitely not support the kinds of editing which I've described in the previous paragraph, I would prefer to get PE11 with my initial configuration (since someone will be helping me with my migration).

I am concerned, however, about using a non-Apple Digital Asset Manager in OSX. I would really like to avoid integration problems. Is using PE11 to import and catalog my digital photos likely to cause conflicts?

Not so much conflicts as maybe a little less seamless integration with Apple software and perhaps some third-party software providers in the Mac App Store where some programs build in direct access to iPhoto and Aperture libraries for getting images into those programs easily. Typically, there is a manual command to go to Finder (think Windows Explorer) to browse folders.
One caution to mention however, is that the organization you set-up in PE Organizer is unlikely to transfer over to either iPhoto or Aperture if you decide to change at some point.
The only real stumbling block that I see in your opening comment is that you want hierarchical keywording (Kirby or Léonie can go into the details on keywording limitations as I stay at one level). If you can work with the keywording schemes of either iPhoto or Aperture, then using PE for your external editor (either program supports setting an external editor) would probably be ideal since you know PE well. This is the idea with the Mac App Store version of PE (editor with no organizer).
Note - I use Photoshop CS6 (full version) with Aperture and it works really well. The only downside is that Aperture has to make either a TIFF or PSD file to send to an external editor so that the original file is protected by not sending it to the pixel editor. While TIFF or PSD files protect the integrity of the image information without degrading it, they are typically much larger file sizes on disk than either RAW or JPEG files. Therefore, your library size (iPhoto or Aperture) will balloon quite a bit if you send a lot of files to external editors.
One other possibility for an external editor would be a program called Pixelmator. It is pretty similar to early versions of Photoshop, but built for Mac. Other than the panoramics you want, it will do most pixel editing that PE can do. It is not an organizer, so it is built to go with either iPhoto or Aperture. It does have differences in how you complete certain procedures, so there is bit of a learning curve when you are used to doing it the Adobe way.
