Can anyone provide the 3rd party site, or details to format my windows based Ipod to make it work with my new mac?

How to restore iPod
Ensure that you have an active Internet connection as new versions of iTunes and iPod Software may need to be downloaded to your computer.
Download and install iTunes 7.0 or later if you do not already have it installed.
Open iTunes, and then connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.

If you are using a Mac, a message will appear prompting you to enter an administrator’s name and password.
A progress bar will appear on the computer screen indicating that the first stage of the restore process has started. When this stage is completed, iTunes will present one of two messages on screen with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
Restore Instruction 1: Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
Restore Instruction 2: Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
During the stage 2 of the restore process, the iPod will show an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remains connected to the computer or iPod Power adapter during this stage. Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see since the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
After stage 2 of the restore process is complete and the iPod is connected to the computer, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear asking you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences similar to when you connected your iPod for the first time.

If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

Okay, unless you restore your iPod while you're on the Mac, I believe it will still be formatted for a PC.
(You will not need to restore the iPod for transferring music to it on a Mac unless you want to upgrade the iPod's firmware on a Mac computer, then it will have to be Mac-formatted).
You see, when you recieve an iPod, it is shipped to you as a Windows-formatted iPod, probably since the majority of the population has PCs, and also, PC-formatted iPods are compatible for music transfer for a Mac also.
Does that make sense?

Does anyone know how to change the format from Windows to Mac? When I first bought my iPod I had windows but now would like to change this. Also is anyone aware why some tracks pause for 2 seconds and then carries on.

Restore the iPod in iTunes for Mac. Restoring will erase and reformat the iPod's hard drive, reload the software with the Mac version and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. I have a problem! i recently got a mac and i already had a nano, not the ones with the video; the long thin one, with photos (i think its a 3rd generation).
So i do alot of transfering files between a windows computer and mac, my main computer is a mac but everywhere else i use pc's. i have got the problem that i want to be able to sync my iPod on my mac but use it to take my files into uni, so it needs to work with pc's
at the moment its formatted to mac so it doesent show up when its connected to a pc
if i format it on a pc then when i reconnect it ill just have to format it again to sync with my library? arghhhh!

Macs can read Windows formatting so you should have no problem connecting your iPod to your Mac once it's been restored and reformatted on a PC. One proviso is that up until now Apple has only fully supported using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac (unless the range has been expanded to include the iPhone and the iPod Touch which I've no experience of). What this means effectively is that if you need to apply a firmware update for your iPod and you wanted to maintain the Windows format you would have to do it on a PC. If you were to try and update a Windows based iPod on a Mac it would be restored and reformatted to the Mac file system and have the Mac firmware installed.
One other thing, if you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one library you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply:

I have a bit of an interesting problem. All my life I've used Macs, occasionally a PC, but I definitely prefer Macs. Anyhow, I currently have a PC, temporarially, I will be getting an iBook late Spring this year, and I have two iPods, a 4G formatted for Mac, with all my music on it, and a 5G formatted for Windows that I just got for Christmas.
Now, my question, when I get my iBook, I want to format the new iPod for Mac and put all my music from the 4G onto it. Getting the music off of my old iPod onto my iBook won't be a problem, however I've got quite a bit of stuff on the new iPod that I don't want to get rid of. Is there anyway to connect my new iPod to my PC and hook the PC up to my iBook and transfer the files that way? Burning everything onto a CD isn't an option, my PC is super old and doesn't have a CD burner, it also has less than 1GB of free space, and I have about 4GB of stuff on the new iPod that I want to transfer over.
Any ideas? I know that I can't connect both iPods together on the same computer to transfer files, particularly considering that one would be formatted for a different system....

Because everyone knows that FireWire is a **** of a lot faster than importing from CD... When I run BrokenHelix with the iPod attached, the iPod doesn't register with the computer, so I can't import that way. then, one that's done you can use the iPod updater (in/Applications/Utilities on your mac) to format the iPod for your mac. but the windows formatting should still work on the mac.

Moving from a Windows formatted iPod to a Mac formatted ipod

First of all, forgive me if this is a repost, as I know I have seen the resolution before, but am unable to find it.
I currently have an iPod 80GB classic, with about 40GB of music on it. I have recently purchased an iMac and want to move to a MAC formatted ipod. That is, connect and manage the ipod in a MAC environment instead of Windows.
I also want to back up all my music on the ipod to my MAC itunes library to ensure my music is all in one place.
Once all is said and done, I want a MAC formatted ipod, and not have lost my music on the ipod by reformatting it.

I'm trying to transfer my music from my IPOD (which is Windows formatted) to my new Mac. My PC crashed and I, unfortunately, never backed up my Music Library. Windows-Formatted Ipod Files to Mac

I just got a new Macbook (very nice!).
I thought transferring files from and reformatting my windows-formatted ipod would be a huge process, but this what i did.
I connected my external disk mode ipod (not on auto-sync) to my new macbook.
1) To my SuRPRISE, itunes read it!!! I was listening to music on my windows-formatted ipod on my macbook.
Macbooks read windows-formatted ipods! I also read on this forum that a windows-formatted ipod work on both Windows XP oS and OS X Tiger.
Q: WHY would anyone, then, format their ipod to Macintosh?

I opened the hardrive of my disk mode ipod.
I clicked on "Ipod Control" (which I though was supposed to be a "hidden file") opened the file "Music"
36 different folders with all my music dispersed randomly in each.
I copied all folders on to my hardrive.
Go to Itunes.
Go to "File" "Add to Library" all the files of randomly dispersed music. Then itunes automatically organized all those random files in my itunes library and macbook hardrive.
In a few easy steps, all the files on my ipod, all 23 Gigabytes of music was copied onto my Macbook.
That's crazy!!!

Two major reasons.
1. A Mac cannot perform a firmware update to a Windows-formatted iPod. You can sync music to it without any problem, but if you ever need to upgrade the iPods firmware when an update is released, you won't be able to.
2. A Mac-formatted iPod will perform a whole lot better on a Mac than a WIndows-formatted iPod does. It will mount faster, and data transfers will be faster as well.

No risk at all. This is a very common way to rebuild your iTunes library if it ever gets corrupted or deleted. There's also a handful of third-party applications available which basically provide a nice front-end and automate this process.

Macs can read Windows formatting but Windows can't read Mac formatting so unless you are getting an error message asking you to restore, you should be able to use your iPod as it is. Officially Apple currently only supports using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac. However, what this means effectively is that if you need to apply a firmware update for your iPod and you wanted to maintain the Windows format you would have to do it on a PC. If you were to try and update a Windows based iPod on a Mac it would be restored and reformatted to the Mac file system and have the Mac firmware installed. The only other thing you'll need to do is to set your iPod to manual update. You can't "sync" that is automatically update an iPod from multiple libraries or computers. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply.
