Format Mixing Question

Trying to avoid any blunders, all of this is a multicam docu-concert
I'm a little lost. I have 4 formats-- Not sure what to make my timeline?
A Camera: EX1 (XDCam 720p24)
B Camera: JVC100 (HDV 720p24)
C Camera: HVX (DVCPROHD 720pA24)
D Camera: Z1U (HDV 1080i60) -- (only for cutaways)
I was planning to go 720/24 ProRes on a timeline? Get it all at 4:2:2
Or should I transcode all the sources first (90 min per Camera)?

Too late...already made a big one. You shot with four VERY different cameras with four different formats. Two are HDV, but different formats of HDV. Not only will getting the colors to match from the cameras be a challenge, but now you have to figure out how to edit all of these formats.This is a pretty big mess from the get go, IMHO. I wouldn't want to find myself in your shoes. I do not envy you.
Basically you need to capture all the cameras as one format, one frame rate. ProRes would be the suggestion, but be aware that you will need a LOT of storage. Talking 8TB or more...depending on how much footage you shot. And the HVX-200 footage cannot be transcoded when you input, you will need to transcode after you capture. For the rest, you will need an HD capture card and decks for each camera (JVC and SONY are different HDV formats, and not compatible).
Frame rate issues are huge. JVC and Z1U shoot 29.97...regardless of "24p" setting, they shoot 29.97. EX1, not sure what frame rate that shoots 24p at...I have no experience with that camera. But with the HVX-200...shooting 720p24 at 24PN (there is no PA at 720...only at 1080)...that is 24fps...not 24fps within 30 frames or 60 frames (DVCPRO HD 720p format is a 60 frame format)...but 24 actual fps. So getting the frame rates to match will be a challenge.
This will take a lot of work. Seriously, a lot. The only way you could have made this more complex is to have shot DV footage as well.

You could try Handbrake, it works quite well.

Mixed Questions BW / HANA / BO integration

I got some some mixed question.
I'm placing this questions here because I believe the BW on HANA Experts have more sensibility how to perform/decide the logic rather than in Presentation Layer (in another way: BO guys keep asking to BW guys to do "this and that" for performance etc...)
1. Let's say, I have Sales order line items 1M record
a) in BW (on HANA), in DSO Level or you can say Infocube Level or ADSO
b) in HANA Analytics View/Calculated view
c) in BW (on HANA) with transient provider using the HAna sales view.
d) in BW ODQ from SLT to ADSO or OpenDSO
I want to present the data in Business Objects (Webi/Analysis)
Q1. Where going to be more faster?
Because once the BEx Query / Query Panel get executed, there is data selected in DB and data to be transferred to app Layer then to BO Layer.
I believe that b) can be more faster (with BEx limitation) but, I would like to understand how to optimize the solution with BW.
Q2. Where the data is refreshed? BO will send a signal to HANA and HANA revert it back to BO and present, or its going to be directly like same platform read and present? Hint.. I'm talking about "cache". Take attention we're talking Line level!
Q3.Lets assume we install the BO App in HANA instance? how it will benefit the performance. Maybe I missed but, the HANA CMC only store Metadata information. Any special license permission?
Q4. When we install BW on HANA. The Application Server is installed in HANA box or we can Install in Windows/Linux? What are the Pro and CO?
Q5. Lets imagine we buy BW on HANA box. "We" start paying to SAP the "real license" once the project is live (production) or since development? (i think this can be general)
Q6. Is there Bw on HAna in cloud for can use it? I seen only hana, for BW only free trial where im not interested.
Q7. We currently have a BW system, which we're thinking to migrate to BW on HANA. But the historic data like 1990 till 2013 we're thinking to put directly in Sybase IQ. How flexible it is? and Each Year we going to push the data N-2 to IQ.

Open Format Timeline Question

Hello,
I'm planning on switching to FCP soon. I am editing on premiere right now and if I get a positive answer to my question I will probably make the switch really soon.
I have a project coming that includes SD footage, HDV and XDCAM EX. Would I be able to edit in real time in Final Cut Pro even without any cards (AJA or Blackmagic)?

Will you need to eventually render? Yes.
Will the quality be EXCELLENT on all formats? No. SD blown up to HD won't look the best.
Can you mix frame rates? 23.98 and 29.97...25? Well, it will work, but it won't look good. Mixing formats is one thing, frame rates is entirely different. Best to match frame rates before you edit, and if you do that, might as well make the codecs match too. Because mixing frame rates is a BAD thing. Avid doesn't even let you do it. FCP does, and people think that they can then get away with it and are shocked when it looks juttery and horrid.

Quiz questions will not retain format when question is changed.

OK forum folks. I'm working on my first e-learning project and have ran into a problem with question formating. The instructions/help basically tell you to click here and click there. I can easily figure that out. The questions I seem to have are quite a bit deeper.
I have a predefined template which is company approved. I have created master slides in the question pool for both a 4 item match and a 5 item match (I have found if I add a line to the 4 matching line quiz the line spacing and formatting changes). The placeholder questions are essentially non-questions.
I duplicate the master slide in the question pool to maintain the original format (spacing, location, etc.).
I change the placeholder questions on the duplicated slide to the real question (slide is still in the slide pool)
The formatting (font, spacing, locations, etc.) change on the new (edited) questions and require reformatting.I have also tried copying the master question slide to the filmstrip and editing the copied slide questions in the filmstrip. I receive the same results.
Is there are way I can create masters in the current format so I can use the approved templates, edit the questions and not have to reformat the slide after the questions have been changed?
Also, is there a way to lock the formatting of the questions? If I want to add/delete a new question or line to the slide, it would be great to be able to not have to reformat the slide for the change.

I am trying to deal with the same issue. The master slides are more about background elements and navigation buttons, but they do not seem to allow for the addition of quiz elements.
I have come up with a workaround that I hope will work. What I am doing is creating a new project that becomes my quiz question layout library (Let's call this Project 2). In this project I add the various types of questions I will be using in my project (multiple choice with three choices, multiple choice with five, true/false, etc...). I get all the quiz elements in place for each type of question (the header, question, submit/clear buttons, review area, etc...).
These slides serve as my Master slides for my actual project (Project 1). I can copy and paste the appropriate layout from Project 2 to Project 1 and then change the questions themselves.
I am sure I will find out the downside of this soon enough...
There is no doubt the creation of masters for quiz questions needs work, actually it needs just to exist!

Formatting quiz questions

I've created a quiz and found that the formatting for the
questions is inconsistent and doesn't fit my slides well. For
example, the width of the answers "blocks" are too narrow -- they
don't fill the slide width well. And some of the font sizes are too
small (automatically reduced from the defaults because of the
narrowed width).
Anyway, if I ungroup the answer in order to change the width
of just the answer (not the checkbox/radio button and answer
number), I lose the question in the quiz manager -- even if I
regroup after editing. I'm guessing there's a unique id assigned to
the group that is lost with ungroup.
Any recommendations for working around this?

Use PPT 07. You can move a grouped item without ungrouping.

TIFF Format Specification Question

This isn't a Java-specific quesiton, but I was hoping someone here would be able to help as I have tried numerous other avenues already.
I�m working with (TIFF) images that have multiple layers, and each layer can have different min/max values. I want to store these min/max values for each layer in the .tiff file, in the SMinSampleValue and SMaxSampleValue tags. So if I have 3 layers I need to write 3 mins and 3 maxes down.
The documentation for SMinSampleValue/SMaxSampleValue says:
�Note that a value should be given for each data sample. That is, if the image has 3 SamplesPerPixel, 3 values must be specified.�
However when I use libtiff (haven't tried this in Java yet but it would be similar I guess):
TIFFSetField( newTIFF, TIFFTAG_SMINSAMPLEVALUE, min1, min2, min3 );
OR
===
TIFFSetField( newTIFF, TIFFTAG_SMINSAMPLEVALUE, min1);
What gets written is min1 three times, so if min1 is 40, then 40 40 40 is written, due to a variable "count", I don�t understand where the �count� for the tags gets set, I shall look into that further.
But my main question is how do I write multiple different values for SMinSampleValue and SMaxSampleValue using tifflib? How do other TIFF readers/writers do this (format question), since I want to be compatible with them.

I am seeing the similar post in SDN and some replies state the following. Have a look into this
Often this error occurs because the TIFF file you have has been saved with some form of compression. You need to open in a picture edit program and save as TIFF making sure options are set so there is no compression.

Format of question/comment changes to almost unrea...

I note that in my first entry, all formatting such as paragraphing and blank lines were removed. Could Skype leave the formatting as intended by the author for greatly enhanced readability please??? Thanks Chris

We only allow a limited subset of HTML formatting options. So depending on how elaborate your formatting was you might lose some e.g. if you copy it from a word document.
We don't remove paragraphs or blank lines though.

Format HD question

Could someone please answer this question for me...
I just purchased a new 250 GB Lacie (Porsche design) external, firewire HD. I formatted it using Extened (Journaled), I also zeroed out all data before hand. After formatted, I now only have 232.68 GB available. Where did the 17.32 gigs go? Thanks.

Video mix question

I know I should know this but I am an idiot...I need to do a mix of 2 video channels (like old school where you pull the fader bar of the switcher between program and preview)...please, what is this filter, effect, or whatever.

If you're doing a cross-dissolve between two clips butt-edited on the same
video track, click on the edit to select it, and use command-t to apply
the default transition, which you can then drag as long as the clips
have sufficient handles.
If you want to cross-dissolve between two clips that are on top of each other
on two different video tracks, type option-w to toggle on the clip overlays,
then p to select the pen tool, and then you can draw the transparency curves
right onto the clips.

A SD and HD video mix question.

So I’ve searched online and have found different suggestions, and I’m not sure which one would be better. Here’s what I’m trying to do, I have SD footage that’s 4:3, 25FPS PAL and I have footage that’s 1080p, 24FPS NTSC. I need to mix them both, so obviously upscaling my SD footage to 1080 would look horrible. So I figured 720 would be better and I resize the 1080 footage instead. Now I have used Instant HD to scale my SD footage up so it will have pillar boxing which I’m fine with since there’s no possible way (unless I’m wrong here) that I can see to make it 16:9 and have it look good. By the way I have Premiere Pro CS6 and After Effects CS6, so if there’s anything I can do better in After Effects instead of Premiere Pro regarding my situation here let me know.
Now my question is, what’s the best way of making my SD footage looking as good as possible that I can get it to be upscaled? Is Instant HD the best route? I’ve tried it but I want to know if it’s possible to get it to look even a tiny bit better if possible. Are there specific settings I should be entering? I know I’m not expecting true HD look to it but I’m just trying to get it to look as good as possible when upscaled. Also if I use Instant HD to upscale it, should I set the field option to always deinterlace? To be honest the footage doesn’t looked like it’s interlaced, I’m not seeing the interlace lines during any motion.
Now my other question is, mixing PAL and NTSC content. What’s the best route for doing that? Any pros and cons?

Apparently it’s an SD footage blown up to 4k resolution while still looking good. Apparently the creator used PFTrack and Nuke for this, as well as Lustre but that’s for color grading it I guess. I’ve never used Nuke or have ever heard of PFTrack. How would you go about doing something like this? Is it even possible to do it in Premiere or After Effects? Should I be looking into Nuke and PFTrack to get a better result with upscaling my SD footage? To be honest I can’t find much info about Nuke and upscaling so I’m really clueless about how this is done… That’s if this is even legit.

It looks like PFTrack was used for the frame rate conversion, and Nuke is the software that performed the actual scaling. That software costs $1,600/$3,000 respectively. I'm assuming that'd be impractical for this project, so InstantHD is probably the best it'll get.

HD Format mixing

I am running FCP 5.02 and will be editing material shot with panasonic varicam DVCPRO-HD and the sony Z1U. Can you mix 720p and 1080i on the same timeline in FCP?

Short answer. Yes.
Good idea? No.
You will have to render one or the other. The time line is not the best place to do conversion.
I agree with Zeb. Were I in your shoes I would up-convert the HDV images. I'll be curious to hear about the results. They may not be as good as you might hope. Of course, your delivery format should figure into this decision.
As Zeb suggests, search around a bit. Creative Cow tutorials and forums. LAFCPUG. 2-Pop. This forum. The online help in FCP. A bunch of other places.

Liquid mix questions

I want to buy one of these but have a couple of questions first.
Could you be so kind to answer them.
1-Do i understand it correct that if you load up one plug-in (one of the 32 plugs in mono at 48kHz) that one plug-in stands for one compressor and one EQ.
2-Can you use the knobs on the unit also as a midi-controller for other plugs
3-Can you record the automation data of the liquid mix
4-Does it work well with Logic pro, on a Quad PPC mac (no pops or audio drops and working every time you put it on)
5-Are happy with it (very happy, very very happy...)

1-yes you get both eq and comp together 32 times
2-Don't think so,no data shows up on logics input monitor and its not a midi interface so i recon no is the answer
3-yes automation is the same as any othe plug in.The hardware controls will ajust the automation in real time and recordable
4-I'm on a dual 2.5 g5 and it works well.each update(LM) has increased its stability and functionality(V2 coming soon)I also run a TC powercore compact.
I did have problems to start with running the LM from the firewire on the powercore(it was best to use the ext power supply when tagging it on the end of a firewire bus)I now have a firewire pci card and run the 2 on seperate busses.all seams well
5-yes very happy,It sounds good,there is rather a lot to take in at the start,and i found getting an objective view of what sounded better difficult because of the sheer amount of models and proccesses available,there are now some presets available which help.this is not a complaint i am very happy with the choice.

Format Quiz Questions

I'm using Contribute CS3 version 4.1 and creating quiz questions. One of my questions needs to be formatted in a specific way for readability and understandability. Nothing I've tried seems to work, it keeps appearing as a run on sentence - very ugly for my needs. Any suggestions??

Formatting Cell questions

Hi,
Like many others I am switching from Excel on a pc to Numbers on a Mac and I can't seem to figure this stuff(for now..)out.
1. How can I make the format cell bar appear and STAY or at least make it accessible ?
2. If I click the T I can get the format "bar" but it puts the word "text" in a random cell and
     I can't seem to get rid of it without deleting(using the delete key) the cell border too.
     Can someone please tell be how to format a border for a cell without the text ?
3. Speaking of borders....I can move the border(still with the word "text" in it though..)but the line size
     does not seem to match the cell size. So....how can I either squeeze up the border size to match the
     cell size or I am willing to change the cell size too so it will match the border. But I don't know how to
     do that either...So...more help please....
I have Numbers 3.2 and am using a newer iMac.

I am trying to add a border to a cell with numerical data in it, after it has been summed from the cells above.
I do not know if I will add the border or not until the sum appears, if that provides any more context to this.
Here's one way to do this. I've already entered my SUM function and decide I want a top border. So, with the cell selected, I go here (Format > Cell pane at right):
It's a little different from Excel, but convenient when you get used to it.
One thing you should take advantage of in Numbers: Header and Footer Row, and Header Column. Here, you could convert row 5 to Footer Row.
Then the formula here simplifies to =SUM(A) and you can easily add body rows in the table without having to worry about adjusting the formula.
