Format partition erase bootcamp as well?

Hello there,
Can someone tell me if I format my Yosemite install will it also erase my Bootcamp partition also? Basically I want to start a fresh OS but I don't want to do the whole Windows install again!
Is this possible? If so could someone point me in the right direction? I found this...
http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mac/64777-rebuild-mac-osx-but-keep-bootcamp-instal l.html
Which is exactly what I want to do but I'm on Yosemite and this person was on Snow Leopard...It might be the exact same process but just wanted to check?
Cheers,
Squibn

Should be the same process. If running 10.7 or later, you can boot into the Recovery Partition to do the erase (command - R on a restart).

  • I deleted Mac Os hard drive partition during bootcamp windows 8 installer. Now i can't reinstall Mac Os

I just reinstalled Mac OS (mountain lion) and installed windows 8 via Bootcamp. During the install I accidently deleted the partition where i installed MAC os on.
Now i just can't install Mac OS, i run windows fine. I been searing the web for a solution, but nothing seems to work for me.
I've tried to make a partition in disk manager in windows (once with NTFS, and also in FAT32 format), then i reboot my computer and hold the command key, go into revocery and press reinstall, but I cant choose any of the discs who appears. I tried to delete the diffrent partitions in disk utility in the recovery. But the system just gives me an error, and woun't allow me to delete any of them. I still got my partition with Mac Os Mountain Lion install on (the recovery) on, but how do i get it installed again? I also tried to press the command + r button and do it through the web, but without any luck.
I've tried this topic https://discussions.apple.com/message/17703007#17703007 , but dosent work!
Really hope someone can help me, since i haven't found a topic who solved this for me.

You can't install OSX on a Fat or NTFS formatted partition. OSX needs HFS+.
Boot to recovery, erase your disk, reinstall OSX and then redo Windows.
Read the Boot Camp directions (available on page 1 of Boot Camp Assistant)

  • Partitioning in Bootcamp using Mountain Lion

When trying to download Mountain Lion, I was given an error message that stated that there was a conflict with Bootcamp.  I went to Disk Utilities and Erased Bootcamp, hoping that would solve the problem and was correct.  However, now that Mountain Lion is downloaded, I have Bootcamp as a slot appearing like my Harddrive, but there's no information.  When I try and partition again to download Windows 7, I'm given an error message "The startup disk must be formatted as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume or already partitioned by Boot Camp Assistant for installing Windows."
    How do I do this?

I've gone to the Partition tab, but not finding an option to delete the Bootcamp partition - the other being my main harddrive.  It did allow me to partition either one, and I'll try to use Bootcamp Assistant to remove one of them, but earlier attempts wouldn't ever show the partitioning option.  That's why it gave the error message.
Nevermind - I figured out the +/- tools and deleted the Bootcamp partition, but afterwards using Bootcamp Assistant, it still won't give me the partitioning option.  Unsure why.
Because you removed the original partition incorrectly.
Clone your drive, erase your drive, repartition your drive and then restore your clone.

  • Can't create Windows partition with BootCamp

When I try to create Windows partition with BootCamp I get the same error, no matter what size the partition is set to : "This disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved" and then keeps giving instructions about formatting the disk as a single partition (after performing a full backup I assume), and then try using BootCamp again.
Does that mean I have to erase and reinstall OS X to be able to do that ? Cause I just did that and I have the same problem. I'm not reinstalling again, it took me an entire day to reinstall all my softwares and run all the updates... Plus it reminds me too much of my Windows days... I'm not supposed to do that on a Mac anyway
Back to the topic... are there any services that need to be stopped during partitioning ? Any software installed that could prevent that ?
What could cause this problem ?

Weird thing is I had no trouble making a partition using BootCamp before I restored OS X, and I had the same softwares installed... or maybe I did that before I installed some of them... Could this be related to any software I have installed ?
And judging by your suggestions I would say that the "iDefrag" option is the only way out of the two to make this work. Sounds a little extreme if you ask me... What happens on the first attempt of creating the partition that would make me choose backing up and/or defragmenting ? ... You don't have to answer that if it's too complicated...
Same thing happened on my other MBP... so as far as I'm concerned, I can only restore one more time and try to make the partition right after first startup. If that fails, then it means it could have been software related... Or maybe restore again, install one more software/utility I use and try partitioning again... and again, and again, until it fails...that way I'll know what caused it...
    Just kidding...
Thank you for the suggestions anyway !

  • Windows partition erase

Hi every one , I made a partition on my harddisk to use windows on it and now i realese its the stupidest thing i have ever done since i bought my macbook. now i am trying to erase windows and use the 10 GB but i have no idea how , i have erased bootcamp and bootcamp assistance by mistake i guess and now i am lost . i tried the disk utility but i am not really sure how to do through there
can any please help me to remove this and use the space for a better use ???

You can use a utility (that is buy) such as DriveGenius
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/drive_genius.php?PHPSESSID=fbd61ecc44c592bfc8 a5f2623e789bda
to repartition your HD on-the-fly. (I'd suggest backing up important data befoer trying to repartition) It's not cheap, but it does some other functions as well, so depending on your needs, it may be a good investment.
It may be possible to google around and find a way to repartition your HD via Terminal - just be really careful.

  • Partition using Bootcamp and Windows 7

    Hi
Would it be a good approach to partition using Bootcamp then install Windows 7? Later I plan to install Parallells. Can it be down this way or should I install Parallels first, then Windows 7?
    Thank you.

You may have to see about using the Recovery HD partition to attempt to erase and restore useful function of the capacity lost to the former Windows installation.
And you may have to backup your contents outside the computer to do it. Disk Utility on the Mac OS X historically has not been able to touch a BootCamp created partition; so if BootCamp cannot remove it, then you have to see how to do the equivalent of a reformat of the entire drive (less Recovery partition?) then reinstall your OS X. Maybe from internet recovery, then get your applications, etc from the Mac App store, etc.
A complete system clone of your OS X on an external HDD would be another method to restore after reformat, of the portion you want whole again, not necessarily the space where Recovery may live.
    There may be (an)other way(s).
    Perhaps someone with recent experience
in this matter can reply & discuss options.
With my antiques, they almost know what I want before I tell them.
Hopefully yours will after you talk to it awhile.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • HT3910 How to format and erase Lion 10.7.3 completely?

I've erased and reinstalled my Lion 10.7.3 but after rebooting, all my previous programs are also installed. How do I format and erase my HD completely so I get a clean OS like I had when I bought my Macbook Pro?

    Downgrade Lion to Snow Leopard
    1.  Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner 3.4.1.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • Unable to format partition, disk may be damaged

I was experiencing a problem with my Windows XP installation on Bootcamp. The Windows side kept restarting, and I could not find the reason, so I formatted with the Windows XP disc and tried to re-install it, but it didn't work. I forget the exact error as to why. So I went back to the Mac side and re-formatted the partition sing Bootcamp, and now when I try to re-install the Windows XP on the Bootcamp partition, I get the error:
Unable to format partition, disk may be damaged
What can I do? I don't understand, because this disk has worked before and I am on the mac side right now, so the actual disk does not appear to be damaged. What can I do?

Do a full format as it will check for errors and mark bad clusters if it finds any (full format = quick + chkdsk /x ), but only create one OS partition e.g like 30GB or something , this will be plenty enough for the os ,instead of the whole drive . Will save you time .
Wait with partitioning the rest of the drive as an extra partition until the OS is installed using diskmanagement .
Also make sure sata-dma is enabled in bios .

  • Partitioning causing bootcamp problem? (x-post from bootcamp forum))

My boss's 17" MBP has 2 partitions - Mac OS (35 gb) and Vista (65 gb). The larger partition is formatted NTFS as it must be for Vista.
Attempting to revert to one partition via Bootcamp shows the "Restore the startup disk to a single volume" button grayed out and unavailable.
Verify disk and repair permissions run cleanly. The only thing of interest I can see on his system is that the internal hard disk is partitioned MBR. My iMac with XP is partitioned GUID. The boss is a little vague about the installation process he went through but is sure Bootcamp created the 65 GB partition onto which he installed Vista. Vista runs great, but he's done with the experiment and wants the disk space back.
First, why doesn't Bootcamp want to do this? Second, any suggestions short of cloning the Mac OS partition to an external device, reformatting the internal hard disk, and cloning back?
    Thanks.
    John

    Hi Kappy,
Thanks for the comments. I didn't think an MBR-partitioned drive could boot the Mac OS, but here's a system doing it. Disk Utility: Select the disk (not either volume) -- DU says Partition Scheme: MBR partition table. An identical system that I bootcamped says GUID in the same place, as expected.
Since there's reason to believe that he repartitioned the drive (if not, how did he get it partitioned MBR?), it's entirely possible that bootcamp didn't create this partition, despite what he says. We are ready to clone to external, re-partition and reformat, and clone back.
    Thanks,
    John

  • How do I format partition as NTFS?

I'm trying to install Windows Vista on my Mac Pro, second hard drive. I printed out the instructions for the Bootcamp process. I'm using a single partition drive and letting Bootcamp set up a second partition for Windows. Everything works okay, but it won't install. I get this error message: "Disk 1 Partition 3 Bootcamp. Windows cannot be installed to this disk space. Wiondows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS.
What I should I do to correct this problem. I thought this would be a pretty easy process using Bootcamp on Leopard.
    Thanks for the help.

I have the exact same problem, I got a new 8 core Mac Pro with 2 HD. I was planning to install Windows on the second drive but kept getting the "Windows cannot find system volume..." message. I tried every combination and workaround I could find (including those in this thread) and the ones on the various Windows support sites but nothing worked.
I finally gave up and tried to install on the HD in Bay 1 (drive 0), so I used bootcamp assistant to split the disk 0 (bay 1) that has my mac partition with a Windows Partition, followed the instructions for bootcamp and it worked as expected! No more errors.
So I wonder if there is something about those secondary drives that Windows does not like (I read somewhere it could be a problem with the SATA driver)
Since I still want to have my windows and mac on the 2 separate drives, I wonder if swaping them - putting disk in bay 2 in bay 1 and the one in bay 1 in bay 2 and putting Leopard on what was the drive 1 instead of drive 0 and windows on the old drive 0 - could help. I have not tried it yet since I'll have to re-install Leopard from the disks and need to backup the system first. If I try I'll post back the results to this thread.
For now it looks like your only option is to split your primary HD with a windows partition and not use the separate internal drive.

  • Error with Formatting Partition (Late 2012 Mac Mini)

    Hello,
For some reason, i am getting an error when i have followed the 'Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide' which i downloaded and printed, and its from Apple. The error is that when i get to the bit on the Windows 8 Pro installation, where you have to select the Partition called BOOTCAMP. I click the partition titled BOOTCAMP, and i click 'Drive options (Advanced)' and then i click 'Format' and then i click 'Ok'. After i did this, the Next button is still not allowing me to click it. The error is that 'The selected disk has an MBR partition table...' it still even says this even though i have tried like 5 times.
    Please help me!
    Kind Regards,

Those temps are common on IntelMacs...
    http://www.intelmactemp.com/list?v_model=mac-mini&sort=dateadded
    Slowness isn't right though...
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • How Do I Add Partitions After Bootcamp Installation?

I want to have Windows 7 on my late 2013 Macbook Pro 13 to run applications not available on OSX.  I need a small separate partition to store files for one of the applications that runs under Windows.  On my older PC Windows machine I have C:\ that contains 98% of the data and a separate partition that acts as a separate drive (M:\) to store library files.  This is a local copy of a server that I carry on my MBP, and doing this as I've done keeps the configuration files (that point to the server M:\) on my MBP consistent with desktop machines that actually point to a network shared drive (M:\).  I just sync my small partition with the server every so often to keep my MBP functioning when I'm disconnected from the server.  Now the problem.  I can install Windows via bootcamp and that creates a C:\ (Windows partition) and gets Windows up and running.  I have already learned the hard way about adjusting the partitions after bootcamp installation (I've rebuilt my Mac about 3 times ).  I have been able to create the correct number of partitions by running the bootcamp assistant, creating the bootcamp partition, rebooting and <option> booting back to OSX, before installing Windows to add this 10GB partition (as FAT32) for my "M drive".  Now after creating the "M drive" partition, I booted back into the Windows install disk (which has issues with USB drivers not functioning which I got past) and now I find out Windows will not install because it can't format the bootcamp partition since it will be a 5th primary partition and Windows 7 only supports 4 primary partitions on a drive.  Is there a better way (without virtual OSs)?

Not possible. Boot Camp only works for two partitions - the OS X one and the Windows one. That's it. If you attempt to put a third partition on the drive, then Boot Camp is no longer able to manage the drive and you will lose the required boot loader for Windows. Getting things back to normal will then require repartitioning the drive back to one volume and reinstalling OS X from scratch.

  • Is it possible to create a Windows 7 Partition via Bootcamp while having an internal RAID 0 Setup ?

Is it possible to create a Windows 7 Partition via Bootcamp while having an internal RAID 0 Setup ?

Yes, just not on the RAID. Boot Camp Assistant will only partition a single drive containing OS X. You cannot partition a RAID array.

  • Error in Restoring the HDD partition using BootCamp assist

This is regarding error in restoring the HDD partition using BootCamp assist. Yesterday I was trying to instal Windows 8.1 Pro on my Mac Mini.
Started had installing windows software using Boot Camp assist using the USB flash drive
Took the back of Windows Support software from Apple store
Did the HDD partitioning for Windows,
Then went ahead to install the windows and automatically machine restarted.
After few minutes started installing Windows... and stuck for more than 3hrs at by displaying the blue screen of Windows installation... and inactive
I had restarted the using start button, and finally I could not able to install Windows.
Then I got black screen with message ' No boot disk, please insert boot the disk and press any key to restart'
I have restarted using start button by holding 'Alt' key
Finally I could able to started machine with OS X
Now I wanted to remove the partition created above, using Boot Camp assist, but it is not able to do it. There is error message ' Error while restoring the hard disk'
Any help, how to remove this partitioning?  Also in every restart I need to hold 'Alt' key to boot the machine with OS X.
    -Narsimloo Begari

if you've tried and cannot remove the partition with boot camp assistant, you'll have to open disk utility and reformat the partition there - choose mac journaled and then try to combine this partition back into your existing Mac partition
