I have an iphone and use itunes to update it. I do not have an ipad if that is an issue.  Is this problem related to apple, or to Windows vista?  I am system administrator on Windows 7 so the problem must be related to apple. I would appreciate a clue as to what I need to do. Or are there sufficient problems with 10.2.2 that I should be happy it will not update? This problem is getting beyond annoying since i have work to do other than cater to apple itunes.

I would say it is Windows.
Which are you using btw, Vista or 7?
And did you download the 64-bit version if that is what you run?
There were a lot of tips to troubleshoot (never needed to in 4 yrs though knock on wood).
    Uninstall itunes
    run chckdsk and sfc /scannow
    CCleaner 3.05

due to the virus attack i had to format my windows laptop...now when i installed new itunes software i had to sync my ipod touch again but it says that if i do it then the data present on my ipod touch will be erased as it is syncd to some older library... how should i protect my ipod touch data?

With all you media (apps, music) in the iTunes library connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup. Do that by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up. Then restore the iPod from that backup.
Note the the iPod backup that iTunes makes does not included synced media like apps and music.

If you have a Mid 2010 model: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery. If later then see below:
Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
If you have an earlier model:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

You formatted your computer's hard drive? If so, it's like starting with a new computer unless you restored all of your content from a backup but it does;t sound like that's the case.

  • Extra disk format for Windows backup

I have 4 hard drives in my MacPro 1) Mac os as main use 2) windows 7, apps and docs 3) Split a) Windows XP b) backup for Mac on disk 1... and Disk 4!
Now how do I partition, format, etc this disk 4 if I want to use it strictly for backing up Disk 2 (windows 7) BUT I DO NOT WANT TO INSTALL WINDOWS 7 ON THIS DISK?
*Bootcamp / Disk Utility has me confused*... should it be formatted NTFS? if so how do I do that without loading win7? I'm only given the option to format as FAT32. In other words I want to use Disk 4 strictly for backup.

If I am understanding you correctly you want to use disk 4 for backup of DATA ONLY from Windows 7 bootcamp partition?
    I see the following options:
    1. Format disk 4 to be FAT 32 using Disk Utility from Mac OSX. Windows 7 will be able to read and write data to it.
    2. Purchase Paragon NTFS for Mac, and install it on the Mac OS. This will enable the Mac's Disk Utility to format disk 4 with NTFS, which Windows will be able to read and write to. You will also be able to write directly (i.e. move data to) the two NTFS volumes, Windows & and Disk 4, from Mac OS. Probably quite useful if you are using Windows and Mac actively for data. If you go this way be aware that the way you chose to boot from Mac to Windows is slightly different. You do it via the Paragon pref pane which is installed, not via the startup disk pref pane.
    3. Purchase MacDrive 8 and install it in Windows 7. Then format disk 4 to be a regular mac HFS volume. MacDrive 8 will enable Windows 7 to read and write to all your Mac formatted disks.
    4. Added in edit. Format Disk 4 to be FAT32 using Disk Utility in Mac. Then reformat it from Windows 7 Disk Management to be NTFS. This might be the best free route but not as versatile as the two paid options.
Good luck, and let us know which way you go and how it goes.

  • Ipod Formatted to Windows but I want to use Mac!

I know you should be able to use an ipod formatted to windows on a Mac, but I can't. I have itunes 7 and it won't let me put music on my ipod says software is too old.
I've been trying to update the software but everything says you can't unless you have a mac formatted ipod! I'm so confused. I never had this prob with my old ipod. Help.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

This is looking like a common problem that has a (fairly) simple solution as long as you have access to another Mac. If not, you may have to do a "clean" install of the OS.
The problem is a corrupted file (at least on Macs with the Power PC processor, id est, not an Intel one) by the name of iPodDriver.kext which resides in the Extensions folder of the Library folder of System folder (not the System Folder, this is an important distinction) which you will see by double clicking on the icon of your hard disk on the desktop.
Drag this file to the trash and delete it (empty the trash).
The idea is that you find a Mac that is happy to mount your iPod and display the update and restore buttons correctly (as well as the full range of tabs and other visual clues, such as a non-generic icon of your iPod).
Then copy the aforementioned iPodDriver.kext to a USB stick, iPod, CD, DVD, whatever from the "good" Mac.
Reverse process to put it on your Mac.
    Shut down "your" Mac.
Restart "your" Mac and open iTunes, connect your iPod and, at least in my experience, it will work and provide you with correctly rendered iPod.
Apple used to recognise this problem, but seem to feel that the problem now no longer exists since the introduction of iTunes 7.1.1, however this appears to be arrant nonsense as it keeps cropping up as a problem on these forums (including in iPods and Macs running the most up to date software).
I feel it is also associated with the USB connection itself (for a longer explanation of why I believe this to be so http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=915410&tstart=0 ).
I hope that some of the above helps.

Try the other USB port. If it still doesn't show up in Disk Utility then there may be something wrong with your Mac. Try something else in each USB port and see if it is seen. If the other thing, like a USB thumb drive, does show up in disk utiltiy then the USB ports are fine.
Power down the system and restart with the drive connected, go to DU and see it it is seen.

I want to be format my hard disk, but want to take a backup copy of information from the Firefox and passwords and book marks so retrieved after format
    Thank you

For backing up bookmarks, see [[Backing up and restoring bookmarks]]
If you want to back up passwords, you need to use an extension such as Password Exporter. This is located at https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2848/ .

  • My iPod Classic was stolen and returned to me by police but now it "cannot be synced because it cannot be written to or read from". I noticed the thief had changed the format to "windows" but I have restored it and still get the same message.

If the media is in the library then yes it is that simple. Connect the device, load it up with your media. The problem is when you try to connect a full device to a new empty library on a new computer when iTunes will offer to replace the content on the device with that in the local library, i.e. nothing! (For anyone in that position see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device).
You should be able to add your devices at https://supportprofile.apple.com/ though I'm not sure what happens if the second hand iPod was previously registered.

  • IPod formatted on windows cross platform, but not Mac ????

I experimented with my 5th Gen 30gig Video iPod this weekend. It was originally formatted for windows, which was great because it would work on a mac or pc. i wanted the latest update for the iPod so I reformatted the iPod using the disk on my mac and rebuilt everything-imported all songs again, etc. Why is that a mac formatted iPod will only work on macs, but a windows formatted iPod will work on a Mac or PC? Nuts to me. I use PodUtil, but are there any freewares out there that will help me to export all my songs, including their playlists so that when I reformat this iPod back to a windows disk, i can just import all the music again, including the playlists with the songs present ?

"Why is that a mac formatted iPod will only work on macs, but a windows formatted iPod will work on a Mac or PC? Nuts to me."
Blame Microsoft. It's their doing that Windows will not recognize the HFS+ file format system.
If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.

  • IPod Nano Sync with Mac, but iPod formatted for Windows

I finally changed to the Mac platform and all my iPods and iPhones were synced with a Windows based computer. While my iPhones were not a problem, my iPod Nano (4GB 2nd generation) seemed not be recognized by my iMac.
I can't seem to get my iMac to show the iPod under Devices to reformat it. Anyone have any advice to give?
I have plugged it in to a my Windows based work laptop and it seems to work fine. However I don't sync with that machine and I have already sold my old Windows based computer it was synced to.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I have three iPods: 40GB iPod photo, 2GB black iPod nano and 1GB iPod shuffle. Each one has it's own playlist to auto sync songs from (technically, the 40GB iPod is synchronized manually, but the other two have playlists to sync automatically from). They each have different names so iTunes knows they're each different. So, you shouldn't have any trouble keeping just two iPods separate with your Mac mini or iMac.
