Formated computer

Hi! I'm new to the forum and I'm in a dilemma. I had to format my laptop and reload all my data. I can't sync my music to the new i-tunes that I downloaded from the Apple site. A message that the iPod can only sync with one i-tunes that already exists, appears. But, I lost the i-tunes when the laptop was formatted. How can I get the data on my iPod to sync with the new i-tunes?
Hope you can help!! Thanks
Jaco

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod.
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
3). Once you are connected and your iPod is safely in manual mode there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. iTunes will only let you copy your iTunes Store purchases directly from an iPod to the computer, you'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
For everything else (music from CDs, other downloads and including iTunes purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
4). Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
5). I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive

  • Cannot get iTunes to acknowledge my iPhone on formatted computer -Help!!!!

    Hi.
I formatted my computer to give it a bit of a clean out and improve performance and what not. I built the system back up and reinstalled iTunes but it won't now acknowledge my iPhone. I spent 3 hours yesterday trying to fix this with the troubleshooting guide to no avail.
This is from the troubleshoot guide:
iPhone requires two important pieces of software to operate properly on Windows. First, the driver must be installed; for iPhone the driver is USBAAPL.SYS. Second, Apple Mobile Device Support must be installed as a Windows Service. If these are not installed, see the Reinstall iTunes section below.
I have reinstalled iTunes 5 times. I have confirmed that my computer does indeed have both of the requirements mentioned in the Troubleshoot above. The only thing that seems a bit amiss is although USBAAPL.SYS is in the \System 32\Drivers folder when I go to the Universal Serial Bus Controllers in the list of devices found in devmgmt.msc the iPhone is not showing up. I figure this is likely to be the problem but I've tried for hours to work our a solution.
All the USB ports on my computer and functioning correctly and the iPhone camera is acknowledged by Windows and the iPhone will charge while connected. I have connected the iPhone when fully charged but it's invisible to iTunes. My iPhone has not been updated with the 2.2 update so is currently running the 2.1 firmware.
Can anyone please please please help me with this??!! Any help would be gratefully received.
    Many thanks.
    Mark

This is how I corrected this problem with the iPhone 5.

  • Re-formatted computer, can't re-install songs

I recently re-formatted my computer. I had backed up all of my itunes songs to disc and thought that simply by copying them back into my new itunes folder that I could once again access the songs. However, Itunes is making me find the songs manually, one at a time in order to play them. We're talking hundreds of songs here. How do I once again access all of the songs in that folder without doing it one-by-one?
    Don

If you don't mind losing your meta data and play lists, the simplest thing to do is:
Close iTunes then drag iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml from the iTunes folder to your desk top.
Restart iTunes and you will have an empty library. Now use File>>Add folder to library... to add your iTunes Music folder.
If you really care about you play lists and ratings etc, it MAY be possible to do something but it is much more complicated. We would need to look in detail at exactly what you folders have backed up and how you attemted to restore the files. Was the backup to an external HD?

  • Transfering my library from my iPhone to my formatted computer

    Hey all,
I just had a serious computer problem and needed to format (I upgraded to windows 7 at the same time) all my music and applications were saved to my iPhone. I have my computer back and I'm wondering how to get the music back off my iPhone and onto my computer. if I try to sync from itunes it wants to erase everything. even though it should be the same library.

    Welcome to AD!
It's not the same itunes library database file, is what that message means.
iTunes Library.itl, which got erased during the format.
You can use the Transfer Purchases feature Neil mentioned.

Or get a 3rd-party ipod manager that supports iPhone to get everything back., not just purchases.

  • Formatting Computer - Any Advice

    Guys,
I'm thinking of reformatting my hard drive and re-installing Win7.
Is there anything I need to do first, such as backup any particular file and put it back once I've reinstalled everything?
I've purchased a dozen books or so and they appear on my Cooler Ebook reader, but would assume there must be some file on the computer that I've got to keep?
    Thanks

Ensure that you have authorized with an AdobeID ( in ADE select Authorize Computer from the Library menu).
As long as you have done that then backing up your "My Digital Editions" folder will be sufficient, except for library books, which you will want to return as they will no longer be usable, after a format and reinstall.

Yes that is true. If you're throwing sensitive info in the trash you should use secure erase:

  • Just Re-formatted computer and reinstalled Windows XP; problems

Hey everyone, I just re-formatted my computer and reinstalled Windows XP, but I can't seem to connect to FIOS. I have the modem sitting on my desk next to me, and all the other computers in the house are connected to it by wire just fine, but when I replugged my wire back into my computer, nothing happened. I tried making a new internet connection, but it wouldn't let me do that for FIOS. The only thing I see under Network Connections is a 1394 connection, and it say Connected, Firewalled. I do not recall getting a CD or anything from the FIOS guy who installed it in our house a while back, so I have no clue what to do. Can someone please help?

I went to the dell website and put in dimension 8400. They do have the driver there.
    http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=DIM_...=
It under network and is listed as "broadcom driver". Broadcom, Intel, Marvell are three companies that make network adapters. Since Broadcom driver is listed under network on the dell webpage I would assume that your machine has a broadcom network adapter. I would install that and see what happens.

  • Need to re-format computer: What to do with LR?

I recently found out that I may have to re-format my hard drive, reinstall Windows, and transfer back my documents, etc.
That's fine. But a big concern is what happens to Lightroom?
I realize I have to reinstall it. But what about my library? All the changes I've made to photos in my library? All of the photos themselves will be backed up from the folder they originated in earlier (before import to LR).
I'm not exactly sure what it is I'm trying to do, but I do want to know how I can back up all of that work and changes made to those photos so I can just restore it after all my photos and programs are back onto my computer post-reformat.
Any help, suggestions, etc.? Would this just be exporting a Catalog? I'm not exactly sure.

If your images are on a secondary internal drive or an external hard drive, and your Lightroom catalog is also there, then you should be good to go.
It sounds like this is not the case, though.
If it's just the catalog file that's not there, it's pretty easy to save a backup copy to another drive. Check out Rob Sylvan's thoughts on backup here:
    http://www.peachpit.com/guides/content.aspx?g=lightroom&seqNum=157
If you have time, I'd suggest doing a File > Export As Catalog to a secondary internal hard drive or to an external hard drive. (Make sure you DON'T have the Export Selected Photos Only checkbox checked in the Export As Catalog dialog that appears, or you'll only be saving the images that you have selected.)
This will save a copy of your images and the catalog (*.lrcat) file to the selected drive, so the time it takes to complete this is primarily dependent upon how many images you have, as well as other factors including the speed (RPMs) of the source and destination drives and the connection method used for the drive (i.e. internal drives are fastest, followed by eSATA, then Firewire, then USB).
A couple of things aren't stored in the catalog/images by default are the Presets and your preferences.
On the Presets tab of the Preferences window (Edit > Preferences on Windows, or Lightroom > Preferences on Mac OS) in LR, you can check the option to store presets with your catalog, which I'd recommend. This will not transfer presets that you've already made into the catalog (at least, it hasn't in my experience), so you'll want to click the Show Lightroom Presets button to find where the presets (if you created any) are currently stored. Then, copy this master folder (called "Lightroom" usually) to a backup drive. (I suggest, however, that you exclude the "Preferences" folder that's in the "Lightroom" folder when you make the backup.)
For the preferences that you have customized, there isn't really a great way to transfer these. I'd suggest taking screenshots of each tab (search Google if you're not familiar with taking screenshots), saving these screenshots to a backup drive, and then re-configuring Lightroom after the reformat.
Alternatively, although I don't personally recommend it, you can just make a backup copy of the file that stores these preferences, and then restore it after the reformat. You can find this file in the Preferences folder mentioned above, which you access by clicking Show Lightroom Presets on the Presets tab of the Preferences window.

Hi ther, because I have a virus on my computer I must re-format it deleting everything on it, including all my saved music. I was just wondering if, because I have all my music on my ipod, when I plug my ipod in for the first time after i have re-formatted my computer, if all my music from my ipod will show up on itunes when I re-install it?
    Chris

"when I plug my ipod in for the first time after i have re-formatted my computer, if all my music from my ipod will show up on itunes when I re-install it?
It will show up in iTunes as being on the iPod if that's what you mean. A word of caution, if your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. You will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
If you have no backup other than your iPod there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.
