Formating hd for making a disk clone

New to Macs
I have a 500 meg external HD
I would like make 2 partitions.
1. A boot partition to copy an image of my iMac
2. A partition to store other file on.
Please advise me on how to do this

Start by formatting it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Then partition it:

Then use either SuperDuper or CCCloner to create a bootable clone of your startup drive.

Unfortunately the answer to your question is ... No. you cant make the built in music App work the same way that is does on the iPhone. I have no clue why Apple decided to do it this way but they did.
I don't use any of them, but there are other Music apps available for the iPad. You may want to look into one of those. Here are a few of them. You can search for more.

  • Best Settings for making a Secure, Reliable Disk Image?

    Hi guys!
Can anybody direct me to the best settings that can be used to make a secure Disk image using the MacOS X disc utility?
I wish to make my computer family friendly, yet keep my proffessional and private files secure/private and innaccesible to children and unautorized individuals. I have heard that files saved inside encrypted images (password protected) are also not indexed in the finder wich is perfect for the privacy I seek (this is true right?).
I know how to access the tools, but the right settings for making a trustworthy image remain elusive. Already tried with some of the formats and information placed inside...started becoming glitchy and unreliable, even after removing the files and making them unencrypted again.I'm abaout to try with the HFS+ format.
I cannot lose the files I wish to protect. But I need to secure them and if anything, be capable of backing up the image by copying it into a HFS+ formated external hard drive every once in a while. Can this be done?
Is there a risk of data loss in the encryption process? One of my external drives (FAT 32) even started to make unrelated neighboring folders "disappear" after making an image inside ( I though I could make an image anywhere and save stuff securely at that point...but nearly losing the entire cashe of info made me backtrack and simply avoid the process until i'm sure of what I'm setting up---so many compatibility problems!)
    • Don't know what settings to use.
    • Some say there is a small chance of a disk image being damaged or corrupted (for no reason whatsoever)...but having trouble right off the bat, with a brand new image worries me. WHAT ARE THE RISKS? Is the system unrefined and unrealiable?
I plan to make the Image a sparse file, using the HMS+ format, 400GB....regular encryption. I plan to copy all my sensitive stuff inside and delete unprotected copies. Risky? Are images unreliable in general? or where my glitches abnormalities?---Can the images hold collections of files or do they become more unrealiable the bigger they get (what I fear). I don't wan't to have to make dozens of images to protect my files.
Can a external drive be formated to HMS+ and accept  a drag and dropped copy of a 400GB image? FAT32 will just not accept it. Would there be risk of the image being damaged in the transfer? NOTE that copying the data into an external drive would be to have a secure backup of the data. If I can't trust the backup to be carbon copy intact...it isn't a backup.
Securing files is really proving to be bothersome, despite having "refined" tools at my disposal.
    Thanks for your help!

Do you place your backups on external disks? Are your external disks formatted HFS+?
Can HFS+ Disk image be Drag dropped into a HFS+ formatted external disk in order to copy them? or is the process blocked like what happens to large Disk images in FAT 32?
I'm trying to lock on to the right format to apply to everything. My steps will be:
Make the image: So far a sparse image in HFS+ format, 400 GB, No partition map.
Drag sensitive work to Disk image. Once transfer in complete delete originals.
Format an external disk into the journaled HFS+ format. Drag drop Secure disk image to back it up.
Do you see any problems with this process? Anything i'm missing?

  • How to move Startup Disk clone from one external drive to another?

I thought this would be a question easily answered on the WWW and easily found via search engines, but so far no luck, hence this question.
Prior to upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion I followed some very good instructions from Tom Nelson on ask.com (http://macs.about.com/od/backupsarchives/ss/diskbackup.htm) related to using Disk Utility to clone my internal Macintosh HD drive to an external hard drive, making it a bootable drive.  I cloned to a very nice LaCie external FW drive that had far more room than that needed for the clone.  This drive booted just fine as a startup disk, so mission accomplished:   I have now a bootable clone of my Lion system prior to upgrading to Mountain Lion.
The upgrade to Mountain Lion went well, and now, before I put any additional apps or much additional data on the original internal  Macintosh HD drive, I want to use Disk Utility again to clone the drive so I'll have a snapshot of the system right after the upgrade to Mountain Lion.
    Questions:
Is there any way to use the same LaCie drive that now holds the Lion startup disk clone to hold the yet-to-be-done Mountain Lion startup disk clone?
If not, how can I move the Lion startup disk clone from the oversized LaCie external drive to a drive more the size of the Lion clone (approx 140G)?   The LaCie drive is far too roomy and nice to have sitting gathering dust for only 140G to be used in an emergency restore.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

    Good info Csound1, and thanks.
So my final question (I think):  How does one move/copy a startup disk clone from one external drive to another, and still have it bootable on the new external drive?   I'm still considering freeing this LaCie drive up for more dynamic storage and getting another drive for the bootable startup disk clones IF I can move this Lion startup disk clone to a new external drive.
I guess the summary question is:   how does one clone a startup disk clone?  As I think about this, and recall the Disk Utility screens, couldn't I simply select the Lion clone on the LaCie FW external drive and do the same operation I did with the original internal Lion drive?  Basically the same steps as before but this time the source is the LaCie FW external and the destination is a new external drive?
Thanks again; wonderful forum here with very smart people.

  • Can't format ssd... Disk Utility Hangs

    Hi all!
Too long; didn't read: I need a way of formatting clean SSD for installing OS X, as the apple Disk Utility doesn't seem to be up to the task!?
A bit of background (UNRELEVANT for question, here to make thread useful to others when searching): A couple of days ago I upgraded my MacBook Pro mid 2010 from OS X 10.7 Lion to 10.9 Mavericks.
It's a standard 13" Macbook Pro mid 2010, cheap edition, except for the HDD to SSD upgrade (upgrade ordered while ordering computer, this it's an Apple SSD).
Suddenly yesterday my computer would not wake from sleep. I closed it by a long press on the power button, restarted it, it used a lot of time to show the Apple logo on white background along with the "working wheel" (around 10 or 15 minutes), then replaced the Apple logo with a "No Access"-logo.
While runnig a Disk Repair un Disk Utilities from a Lion Setup DVD fixed the startup issue in the first attempt, the the computer just froze when I logged in, and I choose to reinstall from scratch.
The SystemsRescueCD (small Linux with a lot of file-system support) proved very useful for making a backup of my data.
Attempts at formatting: The Apple Disk Utility (no matter if it's run from Lion DVD or Apple Internet Recovery) is extremely slow at formatting the SSD. Sometimes it will hang for 10 to 20 minutes, and it only completed the formatting once... kinda...
it took around 6 hours, but after trying to unmount the disk for 4 hours, I choose to kill the computer (and restart), as the partitioning step was complete. OS X could not be installed to the disk.
Since the Apple Disk Utility couldn't format the SSD, I tried formatting in GParted (using SystemsRescueCD) to HFS+ with Master Boot Record GPT (GUID Partitioning Table). It took around one second to complete.
When rebooting and starting the OS X installation, it did "see" the partition, but complained that the file system wasn't journaled. I used the Apple Disk Utility to enable journaling (it seemed to work!), but when I restarted the installation, it froze when it had to deal with the filesystem.
To check if the SSD was able to boot a operation system, I installed Linux Mint. Besides from the usual driver issues with Linux, it worked.
I really hope someone can help -- my Bs.C. thesis is due quite soon, and this computer crash couldn't happen at a worse time

    Longtallsally28
I was thinking that same thing but it said it only applied to MacBook Airs.
Not so,...any and all SSD can fail.
#1) Why does the computer not recognize SSD partitions? (i.e. revert to Disk0s1)
    A likely failed SSD
#2) Is there a possible component within the computer causing the continued failure? ( Is there a diagram showing all the components within the MBP?)
Yes, the SSD controller on the SSD module
#3) What do I have to do to make this computer work?

  • Time Machine gets stuck on 'Making Backup Disk Available'

This has been happening a few days now. Time machine kicks off a backup but it never gets anywhere. It just keeps spinning and saying 'Making Backup Disk Available'
    The log says only:
    Starting standard backup
Attempting to mount network destination using URL: afp://[email protected]/Jim's%20Time%20Capsule
Mounted network destination using URL: afp://[email protected]/Jim's%20Time%20Capsule
I tried to use Disk Utility to repair the sparsebundle and although it says it needs to be repaired, when I click repair it quickly says it 'Volume Repair Complete' but then gets stuck on ''Updating Boot Support Partitions for the volume as required'. I left it on all night to see if it would ever finish and it never did.
Where do I go from here?
    Thanks

Where do I go from here?
if disk utility can not repair the sparse bundle you can try repairing it with disk warrior or a similar tool. if that does not work either you need to trash the sparse bundle and start backups from scratch. there isn't anything else you can do.

  • Any recommendations on external hard drive for making bootable backup?

    Hello,
I wish to make a bootable backup of my MBP before upgrading to Mavericks.
Are there any external hard drives that are better suited for making bootable backups? I use a WD for making Time Machine backups but I have read that WD is not ideal for making a bootable back up - is this correct...?

  • Logic for making ASN as an attachment to a email?

    hi all,
can anyone help me trying to write a logic for making the Advanced Shipment Notification as an email attachment after having converted it into pdf format?
    I need logic for:
    1) Initially converting it into pdf
    2) Making the pdf as an attachment and not as a general email content.

    Dear Aryan,
This conversion to pdf can be done by using program RSTXPDFT4, and for the pdf to be sent as attachment you need to contact your technical team as they will write a script for that, scheduling of the same can also be done.

  • Imagecopy (Disk clone) between two Lenovo T440p

Hi - My T440p having lost of problems, and will be replace by a new, same model. I have installed lots of programs, some of them licensed in a way that I need to unlock and transfer licences, manually by personal phonecalls, some needing lots of updates, all together making it timeconsuming to recreate to current setting from old to new PC.
Question; Is there a recommended way to make an Imagecopy or do a disk clone, giving me a new PC set up exactly as the old one?

It should work okay. You might have to reactivate Windows though.

  • Laptop users: Any recommendations for a scratch disk for Illustrator CC?

    Hello everyone.
I have been reading into scratch disks and their use with Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. It seems most of the discussions have been about desktop systems though. I am currently using just a 13" late 2013 Macbook Pro w/retina. 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM.
I actually have a new 1 TB external USB 3.0 WD drive, but I believe it's a 5400rpm and might not be fast enough to be used as a scratch disk? If not, I was thinking of either getting a 7200rpm USB 3.0 external drive, or a USB 3.0 external SSD. Perhaps something like these?
Amazon.com: U32 Shadow™ 240GB External USB 3.0 Portable Solid State Hard Drive SSD: Computers & Accessories

Illustrator CC is currently just set to use my startup disk as the scratch disk. I don't believe I have run into any problems yet, that might have involved Illustrator needing more than my 8GB ram, and needing to use the scratch disk, but I am not totally sure, and I just want to get one setup anyways, for future use. I am also looking into using this with some light Photoshop use in the future also.
Those of you who use a laptop for Illustrator and other Adobe programs, what do you use for your scratch disk?
Also, where does Illustrator store these scratch disk temp files on a Mac? I have not been able to find any useful information through Google searching so far. Mostly just stuff related to Photoshop scratch disks. I would like to check the location these files are supposed to be stored to see if there's anything taking up HD space that I could take back, and also as a guide to see how much scratch disk space I should look into getting.
    Thanks!!!

Yes, you could do it. Remember to follow licensing restrictions. Here's an article on how to import after installing the operating system:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773
Keep around locked in your office an external Firewire hard drive with partitions formatted for both Intel and PowerPC Macs containing all the applications and the operating systems and default user documents you want to keep. These can serve as the basis for the migration assistent import.

oh i already did that. Im working on my imac and looking into this on my macbook. Was able to reproduce the issue again by trying to open TM. Locked out the finder again and had to restart. I checked the serial number and it was an early 2009 purchase with no coverage.
If you bought a Mac and got AppleCare with it, within 2 years of buying the TC, the TC is covered, too.
I have to admit that this $500 unit was the first to apparently junk out. The western digital that had my main data on that is my daily external that I store about 2TB of data on is still perfect and the new technology TM appears to already be cashed. Love the computers, not to big of a fan on the externals of the apple TV's. No life expectancy. Neither here nor there.
suggestions before I either get this looked at or scrap the HD on it and move forward.?
Reset the TC. See [Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ|http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3728].
Try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
If all else fails, take it to your local Apple Store or Authorized Repair location, they may be able to determine whether the disk is dead.
If it is, they might replace the TC for you. If not, they won't repair it, but if the electronics are ok, you can replace the HD yourself, if you want to. See http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2542983

  • Hello, is there a way for making a photo transparent with iPhoto are another software?

Hello, is there a way for making a photo transparent with iPhoto are another software?

Not with iPhoto, but different apps have different capabilities.
There are a couple of considerations: How is this transparent image to be used? In a Deskop Publishing environment something like Pages' Instant Alpha might be useful. Or if you're trying to overlay one image on another on a photograph then some editor that supports layers would be required.
Further, Jpegs as a format doesn't support transparency so you'll need to work ina  file format that does.
But if you can explain what you're hoping to do we might be able to point you in a more useful direction.
In order of price here are some suggestions for editors:
    Seashore (free)
    The Gimp (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Pixelmator ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

Does Adobe CC have at solution for making HTML5 interactive online magazines? (not a FLASH solution from indesign)

I don't know what the quark plugin does, I'm guessing that it is reading from an external file that contains the price information. An ordinary method of dealing with updatable information in Flash is to use an external file, usually in .xml format. You can update the xml file or have your database do it for you, and then every time a user hits your site, the data is read from the .xml file. Each user will get the latest prices.

i just bought a Raid Mini (1T) and can't find how to format it for my iMac OS X 10.8.5. Can someone help!?

It shouldn't need formatting. That should have been done to make the RAID. If you need to erase the RAID:
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select the RAID volume you wish to format from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
