Formating HD in Time Capsule

I got a new Mac, and after studying the discussions, I have concluded that the best path is for me to erase the TC HD and start over. But Disk Utility doesn't see the drive. How can I erase it?
Thanks for your help!

Open Airport Utility, select Airport Utility Help from the Help menu, search for "erase." A TC can only be erased from Airport Utility.

In need to change from appleshare to mac os journaled disk format on my time capsule. How to proceed?

No Time Capsule disk can be formatted other than the automatic system in the TC itself.. You simply select erase and it will reformat the drive.
If you are referring to a USB drive.. plugged into a Time Capsule.. you must plug it into your Mac and use Disk Utility.
However you do need to understand.. appleshare is not a disk format.. it is a partition scheme.. so when you pick the disk you need to change its partition to GUID.. this is nothing to do with Mac OS journaled format.. the two are distinctly different. Also Appleshare works fine for most people.. there really is no need to change.
Anyway here is how to do it.
I have sd card I can use as example. Click on the Partition Layout.. so you can choose something else.. notice it is presently set to Master Boot Record.. but is formatted Mac OS Extended Journaled.
When you change the partition layout Options at the bottom will become active and you can change the setting. Click Options.
Choose whichever. GUID is the current system for boot drives.
None of this is relevant to the internal disk of the Time Capsule.

  • How can i format and verify Time Capsule? And: Corrupted backups?

Since i did not see TC in the Disk Utility I am asking myself: How can I format the TC?
And: Does anyone know if there is some kind of issue with the early delivered Time Capsules? My TC is becoming quite hot, the ventilator is running all the time and within the first 6 weeks i had two corrupted backups.
    Best Regards

Thanks for the info regarding formatting...
So you don't know any frequently occuring issues with the first TCs that could match with these things?
In other words: A TC that is always ventilating and that is becoming quite hot even if there is no computer online is "normal condition"?
BTW: My TC is already updated to the latest firmware.

  • Trying to lear of way to verify 1s and 0s written to newly formatted drive in iMac and 3rd gen Time Capsule

after choosing format, initially, for Time Capsule, further chose to write 1s and 0s and I don't see either progress bar or any other indication process completed. Will lights blink differently? Is there other way to verify process completed?  Apple offers us the option to write zeros but without way of confirming they were written. I find this puzzling, at least.

after clicking on object representing TimeCapsule, a dialog box appears with menu tabs across top, last one being "Disks" and clicking that one shows device HD capacity, below which are buttons to Erase Disk... or Archive Disk...  Choosing Erase Disk... brings up verification dialog with drop down "Security Method" whose initial option is "Quick Erase (non-secure) then there is "zero out data" "7 pass erase" or "35 pass erase"
huge problem here is there is no apparent progress bar so it appears to be impossible to verify what if anything has been done, which makes each of the menu options other than "non-secure" as essentially meaningless

  • Formatting Time Capsule via USB???

I am trying to format my 500GB Time Capsule as I intend to use it on my wireless network as storage for movies/music etc (using my PS3 as a media server). I understand it needs to be formatted to FAT32 in order to work with the PS3 and that I format the TC using the Disk Utility on my MacBook.
I have had the TC connected via either USB, ethernet and wireless, but the TC does not appear in the Disk Utility window, therefore I am unable to format. I have no problems connecting to the TC via wireless or ethernet in order to backup data. The TC doesnt appear when connecting via USB to my MacBook. Am I doing something wrongly?? Please help. Thanks

I am trying to format my 500GB Time Capsule as I intend to use it on my wireless network as storage for movies/music etc (using my PS3 as a media server).
The Time Capsule's format doesn't matter because all input/output to it is handled by the Time Capsule itself. Check the PS3's documentation to see if it can access network drives.
I format the TC using the Disk Utility on my MacBook.
That's not true. Use the AirPort Utility to format it; you're limited to the options it offers. The Disk Utility doesn't work on network drives.

    See above.
The TC doesnt appear when connecting via USB to my MacBook.
Its USB port isn't for a computer connection. It's for external hard drives and printers; any external drive connected to it is treated the same as its internal drive with regards to network availability.

  • I loaded in Lion - but my time capsule will not back up. I get an message: couldn't complete backup due to a network prolem. Also it says "make sure your computer and back up disk are on the same network, and that the backup disk is turned on.

I installed Lion on my Mac Pro laptop. Regarding Time Capsul - I get a messaage as follows: couldn't complete backup due to a network problem. Make sure your computer and back up disk are on the same network and that the  backup disk is turned on. Then try again to back up. I have time capsul turned on. bill

I have exactly same problem with my MBP and MBA, after upgrading to Lion. I've tried to fix this issue while cheking key chain issues and network setup, even formating hdd and time capsule firmware upgrade (ver. 7.6.1.). Nothing can help. It is very annoying.

  • Time Capsule not working after 10.5.3 update

The following link shows screenshots of how Time Machine is behaving after the 10.5.3 update.
    http://badtastic.com/stuff/tmprobs.jpg
Ever since the lates 10.5.3 update Time capsule / Time machine has been incapable of successfully completing a backup. Its stuck in an endless cycle of unsuccessful backups. Apple, please fix this!
    / Badtastic

I finally broke down and called Apple tech support last night, just prior to my 2nd premature disconnection with the tech agent, they told me that this is not an issue with the 10.5.3 update, but rather an issue with Time Capsule itself. They were in the process of transferring me to their wireless 2nd level support when I got disconnected (again). I haven't called back yet, but will be sure to keep you updated once I find out the issue / resolution. I am in the process of moving everything from my Time Capsule HD and onto another Firewire HD so I can try a full format of the Time Capsule to see if that helps.
By they way... I am now back to using Time Machine with my Firewire HD without flaw. It's, in my opinion, related to Time Capsule and not the 10.5.3 update. What makes it worse is I paid $500 for the Time Capsule and $0 for the update.

  • Is it possible to reserve a space on the time capsule to use to share files like; music, pictures, or documents?

There are 4 Mac's in my house and I'd like to back up all of them to a time capsule, i know it is possible to do this. however i would also like to be able to dump files like; music, pictures, and documents onto the time capsule so that the others mac will be able to access these files when they want to. This will stop the need for me leaving my mac on whilst other macs access my hard drive, or passing USB sticks around the house.

With an ordinary disk you can partition it with Disk Utility to reserve space for various things. With the Time Capsule you cannot partition it because Disk Utility doesn't work on networked drives and AirPort Utility can only format an entire Time Capsule, not paritition it.
You can simply store the files you want to share on the Time Capsule and turn on file sharing, and it will do what you want. The only downside is that because you can't reserve space, eventually the Time Machine backup(s) on it will reduce the amount of available space to zero. This would eventually happen anyway whether you store your files on there or not, and then Time Machine starts deleting the oldest backups, but if you store your files on there and space goes to zero people won't be able to add files.
I'm not sure about the "not powered" part. For many months I stored an iTunes library and music on a USB hard drive that was powered off the Time Capsule USB port. Of course, I did this so that the music would be accessible anywhere in the home. I swear that the external drive never used its own power cable. It was a portable bus-powered USB enclosure with a laptop-sized drive in it, though, so it normally does not require a power cable. If the files you need to share aren't too large, you might think about plugging in a USB stick drive which would be very compact, needs little power, inexpensive, and has no moving parts to break or heat up.

  • Time Capsule local snapshot error (MTM FS server)

    Hi
I found an error in the console log which happens every second.
It seems the Time Capsule causes this error:

    The errors are gone..
But I've no idea why I get these errors.
I formatted my whole Time Capsule and startet from scratch but the same errors...
I working with Yosemite and the 2nd or 3nd generation of Time Capsule.
    Any ideas on this?
    I appreciate any help...

Yosemite is actually not just buggy it is broken. The DNS is broken. After you restart the TC for the next few minutes yosemite can find it.. after that it is lost again.
Users have finally got so sick of the situation they have started hacking mDNSResponder back from 10.9.
    See http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/
You will get error after error because Yosemite cannot find the server..

  • Time Capsule to my TV

Has anyone come up with a solution to stream media from a time capsule to a TV? I keep my TV shows (in .mp4 format) on my time capsule and I like to leave my iMac off to conserve power, so I want a solution to view my files on my TV. I thought about an AppleTV but everything I've read seems to say that won't work. Anyone have any other ideas?
    Dave

Not sure about the ATV but there are no media servers in the TC whatsoever. So it cannot be used for anything except to store files.

  • Time capsule crash when i add external drive

    Hi all:
I have a time capsule that is running out of disk space. When I plug in a usb external drive, the time cap turns amber and all the wireless functions go off line.
Time capsule firm ware is up to date. Does anyone know what is wrong?

Is the drive 3 TB or less?
Is the external hard drive formatted correctly in Mac OS Exended (Journaled) or FAT32?
(Your Mac can read other formats, but the Time Capsule USB port will only read and write to the Mac format and FAT32).
If yes to both questions above, have you tried using a powered USB hub with the drive?

  • Total Time Capsule Crash - All iTunes Lost?

I've tried all the resetting methods and everything. The Time Capsule had ALL of my iTunes music and TV Shows and movies on it, and when I reset it, it only stays connected for about 4 minutes, hardly enough time to move 110 gigs of music and video back to the computer.
I can't return it to BestBuy because I know they'll just swap it out. Can Apple Support possibly exchange/repair it without deleting ALL of my files? This is 4 years worth of stuff I'm looking at losing here.

  • Wireless time capsule

All, I used my time capsule and connect it to my wifi - I know how to access it via my macbook. The problem is I put a movie mp4 format on the time capsule drive, and try to open/stream the movie using my itunes. It's very slow. Is it beause of my internet connection or because time capsule is not designed to be used a hard drive like seagate wireless products? I bought time capsule for backup and also use it as wireless hard drive.
    Thx

You should get full wireless speed from any file stored on the TC.. but remember wifi is shared media. Any body else accessing internet or TC will halve the bandwidth.. any use by the computer like TM will slow the access.. indeed TM seems to take more than its fair share. Any simultaneous access to the internet will slow the connection.
Measure your speed copying and retrieving a file to the TC? If the streaming is slower than that, then something could be wrong in setup.. but I think it is just wireless. TC is not a media server and not designed to stream.

  • I have partitioned my time capsule, but I can't get it to work as a Time Machine back up and permanent media server for both mac and PC. What format do I need to partition the drive to so that it works for both mac and windows and so that it will be visab

I have partitioned my time capsule, as I want part of it to act as a media server for both mac and windows. However I don't know what format that I need to partition it to. I also can't make it a permanently accesible drive. I want to restore the drive to the original format (which I don't know) and start again and re-partition the drive in a format that can be used for media by both mac and PC and for time machine back-ups and make the media part of it permanetly accesible so I can add and acccess my files.
    Thanks

You are mixing up a couple of things here.
The TC drive cannot be partitioned without removing it.. did you do that?
If you partition it you must use a Mac disk utility and use the HFS+ ie standard Mac format. And GUID partition table not windows type.
You can select erase disk in the airport utility.. that will take the disk back to original format. No partitions. TC is deliberately not partitioned as it is not a media server.. it is a backup device for TM. Over time .. the disk will be filled with TM backups so you have a long history of file changes to your computer.
There is no media server in the TC.. it is merely disk storage.. you can serve files from it to a media device.. but the TC itself is dumb as dumb.
Now the actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. The TC offers SMB file services to the network. You can copy files to and from the TC as if it was a local disk without caring one iota about the format. The TC handles that .. it is not a local disk .. it is a network drive.
Although you cannot partition the TC. you can still copy files to it.. this does have implications for TM.. but as long as there is plenty of free space should not be a major issue.
You can create a disk image via the disk utility in a Mac.. and as stated you can create partitions if you do it on a Mac with the disk directly connected which means breaking warranty if any exists on the TC.

  • Can I format my time capsule 2TB to ntfs to use it on a PC and mac as an online HHD?

Hi, I wave a 2TB Time Capsule and a net of 4 macs and 1 PC I need to use the Time Capsule as an online HHD but it is on fat 32 format, its any  way to re format the disc to ntfs to can save files larger than 4GB? and still use the Time Machine functions
    Thanks.

The TC will already save windows files.. AFP format should accept files larger than 4GB now. As a network drive the format on the TC is irrelevant.. it offers SMB to the network and that is all that matters.
