Formating in NTFS or ext3?

I just bought a media player and it won't recognize my Apple formatted hard drive. When I contacted support, they told me that most media players won't recognize Apple format (Wow!!!). They told me I should format in NTFS or ext3. How can this be done? Does anybody know or am I stranded?

Get yourself a different media player such as an iPod.
I would love to get an iPod, but can it be linked to my 2TB Hard Drive to stream 1080i HD movies across to my telly? Ipods are also much more expensice then a WD media player for example, but I might consider it if it can be done.

  • When I load Windows 7 in Bootcamp it freezes saying partition is not formatted for NTFS(?)

I have to set up a partition on my new iMac to get a piece of business software to load. I tried Crossover and Parallels. Set up a 250 GB partition in Bootcamp and things seemed to be going fine with the windows 7 Ultimate loading but then i get a message like Hard drive not formatted for NTFS. Suggestions

I Just figured it out!  I Have a Mac Mini 2012 with 2  Kingston 128 GB SSDs.  I thought it was having 2 internal drives that was making problems... Had exact same issue as all of you.   First I would get a no NTFS partition error after I used Boot Camp Assistant to make a USB install stick for Windows 7 Ultimate x64.
My solution was simple, removing EVERYTHING connected to my mac mini, including my Wireless mouse and Keyboard. All I had connected was my Apple wired keyboard, the install USB drive, and my monitor. Having a Second internal SSD drive was not the issue.
I formatted the BootCamp partition, and POW! it actually worked.  The error that  setup couldnt install on this drive, and see error log didnt show up!  Try that! it might work!

  • Boot Camp Windows install format to NTFS not working.

As a preface I am new to Apple and more complex computer issues in general. With that said I have spent several hours trying to get Windows 8.1 installed from the DVD media to a partition created using Boot Camp Assistant. I have tried several suggestions and looked through many threads, blogs and articles and none seem to have the correct answer. Below are the steps that I have followed and the issue that I run into every time.
    Open Boot Camp Assistant
Select Download the latest Windows support software from Apple
Select Install Windows 7 or later version
Download support software to USB Drive (leave connected)
         Create a Partition (200GB)
Hold Option on Reboot and Select Windows
    Begin the Windows install process
Select Custom: Install Windows only (advanced)
Installation asks: Where do you want to install Windows?
Select Drive 0 partition 4: BOOTCAMP
         Error Message Details:
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style.
Windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space. Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS.
Solution I found from many threads is that I need to "Format" the partition. To do so I:
Select Drive 0 Partition 4: BOOTCAMP
         Select Format
Select Drive 0 Partition 4 (No longer titled as BOOTCAMP after the reformat)
              Error Message Details:
Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk is of the GPT partition style.
I cant seem to find a solution to this. Any help would be appreciated. I have tried removing all other connected drives and devices, and recreating the partition several times with no luck.
    Machine Info:
    OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
    Mac (27-inch, Late 2013)
Processor: 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
I also have VMware Fusion installed on the machine and already used the Windows installation media to create a virtual machine. Is it possible to transfer my virtual machine to a Boot Camp partition? I did a little research and it looks as though thats not possible (at least not easily) but I figured I'd ask anyway.

Sorry for the delayed response. I'm still working to get a solution so any help is much appreciated. Thanks.
The installation media I purchased is for windows 8.1. Is that the issue? Do I need to install 8 not 8.1?

  • I need to return a external drive to windows NTFS uncompressed but disc utility keep formatting in NTFS compressed

I need to return an external drive (Seagate GoFlex Satellite) to windows NTFS uncompressed format but disc utility keeps formatting in NTFS compressed.

OS X can only read NTFS partitions.  I doubt it can create them.  I only see MSDOS FAT and ExFAT as choices in Disk Utility and neither are NTFS.  If you have MacFUSE installed and the NTFS-3G plugin you might be able to do it in Disk Utility.  However, it will be very very slow.
It might be easier to connect the drive to a PC and format it that way.  Use the quick format option unless you suspect the disk to have bad sectors.  Or setup Boot Camp, install Windows and format the drive when you dual boot into Windows.  Or you could setup a virtual machine using Oracle VirtualBox, Parallels, or VMWare Fusion to access Windows so you can format the disk.

  • LR Win to Mac - external HDDs formatted for NTFS not Mac, best solution?

Just moved from windows to Mac and moved the catalogue over. I save all my photos on two backup external HDDs to keep my computer empty but they are formatted for NTFS for Windows which a Mac does not support writing to. So while I can read the files from the catalogue on LR I can't move any new files to them.
Has anyone else found a workaround or do I need to reformat my HDDs for Mac format?
    Thanks in advance.

The HD must be partitioned with GUID partition map and Mac OS extended (journalled) file system. Do not partition the drive into two. When you have a working OS X system, use Boot Camp to create the Windows partition and install Windows.
If you're trying to install Snow Leopard on a Mac that was delivered with Lion installed =
    1. It may not be possible at all depending on the Mac.
    2. If it is possible, it cannot be done with the retail SL disc which is 10.6.3
    3. The only way it can be done is to obtain the original grey discs which would have come with the Mac if it hadn't had Lion installed in the supply chain. They will be at least 10.6.6 and more likely 10.6.7 or .8. You can try to obtain those from Apple Customer Services.

  • Windows 10 bootcamp, had to format to ntfs

    Hi.
During install of Windows 10 I had to select partition I wanted to install it on.
I selected the BOOTCAMP partition, but bootcamp hadn´t formated it to NTFS. Therefore Windows installation let me format BOOTCAMP to NTFS.
Why didn´t bootcamp fix this automatically? Did I loose something? Why don´t it copy drivers for the wifi card? WIll the light on the keyboard still work?

You need to install Bootcamp drivers which support Apple hardware on your specific Mac, if they were not automatically/silently installed during Windows installation.

  • Problem with partion resulting in "One of the source volumes specified has an invalid format and cannot be protected using Windows Backup. Only volumes formatted with NTFS/ReFS can be protected."

We have two new Windows Servers 2012 R2 that I'm trying to set backups on using a script. When I used the -allCritical switch, I get the error specified in the subject. When I look at the partition information using diskpart, I see a 2048 MB partition with
no drive letter labeled as System that is FAT32. I was never prompted to my recollection of what file system to format the partition with. Is it safe to assign this partition a letter, convert to NTFS, and then remove the drive letter?
    Thanks

I did. I assigned the drive a letter and ran  CONVERT [drive letter]:
/FS. I was really worried during the reboot, but it came up OK, and after it was back online, I removed the drive letter.

  • Trying to install windows 7 and getting error message windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS

Trying to install windows 7 and getting error message Windows must be installed to a partition formatted as NTFS

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Boot Camp Assistant creates a Windows partition in FAT32 to make the Windows XP installation easier.
The problem is that Windows Vista, 7 and 8 require a NTFS partition, so the Windows installer gives this error. The only thing you have to do is to choose the BOOTCAMP partition in the installer and go to “Drive options (advanced)” > Format. Finally, install it

  • Windows in Leopard: solving disk error and formatting as NTFS

    Hi,
I'll post here a link to a solution I found on an australian forum
    (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=848369&p=-1#bottom).
Look to Malcolm Burtenshaw posts and follow his procedure.
It worked fine for me and solved all my problems; I higly recommend it.
    Good luck!

I have also been having serious issues, and this worked for me also. Before (In Leopard with BootCamp 2.0) I could partition ok, and everything else, but the Windows installer just wouldn't give me the option of reformatting the drive (formatted to FAT32 by BootCamp v. 2) to NTFS. To re-iterate, if you're having these DISK ERROR problems, do the following:
    Backup all files
Use Leopard/Tiger install disk to wipe the entire hard drive (all volumes mac and pc) with Disk Utility (this may not be necessary, but it could clear up the problem)
    Install Tiger (10.4)
Run Bootcamp (in Tiger), partition, install Windows, and install drivers
Install Leopard (you may choose "erase" within the Installer since this will just wipe the Mac partition)
Now you're good to go. For running Bootcamp on Tiger, you will need to download BootCamp beta 1.4, there is at least one mirror (and a 1.3 one too) that you can easily find with google. Also, if you're having trouble installing with the beta after December 2007, try setting back the clock and disconnecting from the Internet.
Although it is very strange that Bootcamp 2.0 (or Leopard) have broken the ability to install.

  • NTFS vs ext3 for a Shared Partition?

Since the journaling of ext3 is disabled when it is accessed through windows, would it be better to just use NTFS on a shared partition, or does NTFS have any disadvantages as well?

I've used NTFS for sharing data between my Linux and Windows installations for years, and I've never had any problems. You'll probably want to defrag it occasionally though. I defrag my shared partition once every four months or so, if I can be bothered.
Just don't do what some new converts try to do and make your entire home folder an NTFS partition. Just mount --bind, or symlink, the shared partitions's Documents/Videos/Music/etc. folders onto their corresponding /home/user folders.
If that's what you're planning on doing.

  • Can a Time-Capsule be formatted to NTFS for WIN7 Usage?

I am trying to get Win7 to work with a Time Capsule.
    Model - A1355
    Serial - 6F******ACD
It is my understanding that I need to format it with NTFS in order for it tow work.    Official documentation stating yes or no would really help.
    Anyone?

So in other words, I can't format it (Time Capsule) to NTFS.  I've read about MacDrive and MacFuse.   In your knowledge how should I go about in resolving the usage in between a Mac with Win7 and a 1TB Time Capsule.
    Any help is appreciated.

One more thing - AFAIR, I tried to do that once some time ago (don't really remember it now) and it worked fine, but after the whole process after booting Linux fsck came up saying it needs to repair something. Don't really remember. Anyway, it said that automatic repair isn't possible and gave me a propt like this (similar, am not sure after all that time has passed):
"Sector 0000001 is broken, you want to repair it? [Y/n]"
    after saying "Y" there was:
"Sector 0000002 is broken, you want to repair it? [Y/n]"
and so on. You get it. I held Y for something like 20mins, and without any way of knowing how many sectors were left, I wanted to put a weight on "Y" key and go to sleep. But I was afraid that at the end there would be a prompt like "This will erase all your data, are you sure you want to continue?" and was afraid to leave this.
I decided to reinstall then, and now I want to never have to do this again.
PS.: This may be because I did this with Pragon Partition Manager (the WinXP program) and not Gparted.
