Formatting a CF Card?

I have a 16 GB CF card that has developed some "bad spots" internally. That is, I can't transfer files to or from it reliably. Finder reports data integrity errors either in the files themselves or in the catalog file whenever I use the card.
I'd like to format the card with a low-level formatter (NOT just initialize it) but I can't seem to find any vendor selling such a product.
I have a variety of hardware devices and computers so I don't want to limit your response by listing a particular configuration. My only strict requirement is Mac OS 9.2.2.
Please make a recommendation.

How does the card reader connect - USB, or firewire?
I have both types.
One of the problems is that OS 9's Drive Setup can not format a volume that >connects via firewire or USB. You can do a simple erase of such a volume via the >Erase function in Finder's Special mune, but this does nothing as far as being >able to do things like a low-level wipe and format.
Too TRUE!!!
Third-party formatting utilities that run in OS 9 are difficult to find these >days. One that had lots of capabilities was FWB's Hammer (later replaced, I >believe, by HardDisk ToolKit and Partition ToolKit) - but I haven't been able to >find those for a long time.
I have the last OS 9 version of HD SpeedTools. Are you referring to something else here?
It is possible that the OS 9 version of LaCie's SilverLining can do it - I've >never used that utility, nor know if it is still available.
I have a copy of SilverLining. I'll give it a try.
If the card reader connects via firewire, it is possible that a firewire drive >formatting utility can do it. One such is an old one from VST Technologies, >which I still use with firewire drives. You can download it from here -
VST Format 2.3.1
I didn't know about that one. Thanks for the reference.

  • How do i format a memory card on my mac?

I don't get a choice to format the sd card (actually via an adapter I plug into the USB port that holds various memory cards) - not sure if formating the sd card would actually eliminate the virus, but thought I'd try...  The card is infected with a "conficker" virus, which Sophos can't remove.  I have eliminated all the files, and there still is like 55 unviewable files.

Disk Utility. The same way you format any type drive on a Mac.

  • N81: "Memory full" even formatted the memory card

    Hi.
Using N81, I get the "Memory full. Delete some data" message every time (when turning on the mobile, when trying to install any app, when trying to uninstall any app, ...).
I've formatted the memory card, and I've got:
    - Capacity: 1947 MB
    - Used: 1 MB
    - Free: 1946 MB
but continue getting the same error.
Any similar experience? I reset the mobile (*#7370# and *#7780#) but I don't experience any change (I've deleted the time and settings, but not the memory issues).
Thank you very much in advance.

    Hi bilbaow,
    Thank you for your post.
What I recommend you try is to re-installing your firmware and see if this make a difference. You can do this via Nokia suite through tools and update.
If after this is still isn't working when you did a hard reset (*#7370#) did you back and restore? If you did do the hard reset but don't restore, do still experience the same issue?

You should have because that's how to do it on FP2 phones such as the N78 and N96.
Menu > Tools > File manager
Go into the "Memory card" section, then:
Options > Memory card options > Format

  • How to Format an SD Card that won't mount?

This is the closest forum I could find for this, I have an SD Card which I used when taking photos on my Canon T1i on a family outing. I have pictures of my new born on there from the day. When I got home that day I immediately went to copy everything to my computer; however, the SD Card could not be read.
    * It does not mount on any Mac (mini HDMI & eMac, internal slot & card reader that both worked previously - 16 GB card)
    * The Canon says "Card Cannot Be Accessed" - when attempting to format I get "Cannot format. Change Card"
My hope was that I could initialize (ie: non-low level format) the SD Card then use one of the many apps out there to restore any recoverable data.
Question is... how do you format a card in a situation like this?
I was going to use my work laptop (PC) which had a card reader, insert a diff card, find the driver letter, then format h: /q (assuming h was the drive letter)... with a last second swap with the bunk card... but my laptops card reader isn't working at all (just found out when attempting this).
Are there any other ideas? I do know that the name of the card is "No Name" and I was hoping to format it via some terminal command or via some magical utility that I have yet to find.
My worst fear isn't to lose all the photos (that would suck bad), but that I would have to buy another card (I'm not up for the task of soldering a new controller chip to the memory). Also, the console does not come up with any error messages.
    Any help much appreciated.

Thanks Niel; however, Disk Utility does not see it on either computer (mini or emac)
Then the problem's one that reformatting won't resolve.
I saw somewhere a command to format a HD that was not mounted; however, it was for a diff OS and the command didn't map (was a *nix variant).
Even if a volume's not mountable, the computer's aware of its presence and the Disk Utility list will show it as a grayed entry. The Disk Utility won't show network volumes, whether mounted or not.
Put a working card in the drive and check the Disk Utility again. If it shows up, consult a professional data recovery service. If it doesn't show up, the Disk Utility isn't designed to work on items of this kind; this may also be the case if only software provided by the manufacturer is capable of accessing it.

  • Formatting 2GB SD card with FAT32 using Disk Utility

    Hello
I'm trying to format a 2GB SD card in a card reader/writer to FAT32 using Disk Utility. Unfortunately the only option available under the Erase button is "MS-DOS File System (FAT16)". I need to do this to upgrade the firmware in my Sony TV which requires a FAT32 formatted USB device.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Tim
P.S. Unfortunately I'm stuck in OSX Tiger on an old B&W G3 while my G5 undergoes repairs.

    Tim Goodwin wrote:
Ok, well anyone know of a free OSX 3rd party utility that will enable me to format the SD card to FAT32?
Unfortunately I don't have a larger SD card.
I tried my 1GB SD card on a XP PC and I'm not given the option of FAT32. So it may be a limitation of the SD specification, which means you may just need to bite the bullet and buy a larger SD card.
Perhaps you can ask Sony if there's some setting on your device to use something other than a FAT32 SD card. (I mean, this is Sony after all, you'd think they'd prefer Memorystick. )

  • Formating N82 Memory Card

    Hi guys,
I installed an app (MovingBall_Example.sisx) on my N82 onto the memory card. The app installed two file. the MovingBall app as well as a RDAccelerometer.dll file. This app designed for the N95's but i thought it will work fine on the N82.
On the first run of the app, it opened and ran for awhile then crashed. i restarted the phone and it hung on the nokia's white screen for ages. I then restarted it a again after removing the battery, but no luck. It will only work if the memory card is removed.
I've had a look on the card, and it seems that some folders and files are corrupted. I have made a copy of the memory card and want to reformat it. What format should i reformat it to and what folders can i safely put back?
I've got the following folders :
    -cities -- (Navigation folder)
    -Images,videos,sounds,other (Default storage)
    -Resource
    -Sys
The corrupt files are in sys\uninstall...is it safe to delete items from this folder?
Also, should I touch the sisregistery folder at all?
If I remove all traces the MovingBall_0xE14A45B8.exe & RDAccelerometer.dll from the \bin & \resource will it be okay?
    Thanks
    H

    Hi Hempiz,
If i were you its best to format the entire card and not just deleting certain files.
If its corrupt and you leave files on there the problems will probably still remain or return.
Its worth biting the bullet and formatting the whole card.

  • How can I format an SD card on my mac?  I have tried the erase thing but when I put the card into my 35mm camera it says that the card has to be formatted.

I just purchased two new SanDisk 8gb SD cards for my trail cameras.  When I put the cards into the trail cameras, the cameras will take pictures but it won't store them on the cards.  When I put the cards into my 35mm camera the camera tells me that the cards need to be formatted.  I have went through the steps in the disk utilities and erased the cards, which I assume is the same as formatting them??  I have tried this for hours and have had no luck getting these things to work at all.  It was awful disgusting when I checked my two trail cameras the first time and found out that they had taken close to 75 pictures but the cards were empty.  When I bought my 35mm camera several years ago, I bought a couple of Kodak SD cards and used them right out of the package and never had to do any of this formatting thing.  I don't understand what is going on and could sure use some help with this.  Thanks for any information anyone can give me with this problem.  I would love to have seen what animals set my cameras off 75 times in the last few days.  Thanks again.
    Respectully
    Jim

AFAIK cameras offer their own built-in format utility for inserted SD cards.  You should use that.  Otherwise, refer to the manual that came with your camera to determine precisely how your SD cards need to be formatted to work properly.  Personally, I'd suggest Partition Scheme: MBR, and Filesystem: FAT32.
Try to limit the number of formats you perform on the SD cards, though, as you're reducing their lifespan.  I believe formatting causes re-writes to a portion of the SD card that has fewer read/write cycles than the rest of the card as a whole.

  • I have recently changed to an iMac from a Windows PC. How do I delete files and format the memory card in my helmet cam?

I have recently changed to an iMac from a Windows PC. How do I delete files and reformat the memory card in my helmetcam?

If you return the memory card to the helmetcam, it may choose to reformat it before use; back to some FAT-16 or FAT-32 format many of these third-party cards and cameras use. Unless you were going to use it for Mac OS X and format it with HFS+ or in a partition map for Mac data, etc.
If not, the easiest way to reformat the card may have been in the camera itself. I've formatted several kinds of camera cards, drives, USB flash drive, and others. The means varies with the intended purpose. Sometimes the default is the best; since it is platform neutral if the device is seen by both players.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • N8 how do I Format the microSD card??

The manual says I can reformat the microSD card in my N8 by  "You can do this in Menu > Applications > Office > File mgr.."
But I can't see any options in there that would do this?

In File Manager point on the card and hold down until the sub menu appear. You will find the FORMAT option there.

  • Lenovo 3000 G410m-mm requests to format good SD cards with files

    Hello!
Lenovo 3000 G410m-mm requests to format SD cards when the cards are inserted. The cards are normally readable in an external USB cardreader. The cardreader driver from Lenovo site is installed. Driver from Lenovo driver CD did not help also. Lenovo support does not reply to my e-mail about this problem.
Why have not anybody replied to this problem in the last week?

    hi tommost,
    Welcome to the Forums.
Not sure if this will help but the same "Damaged SD Card" message popped up when I was trying to check the S2109 tablet. I was able to read the contents of the SD card after doing the following::
    1. Insert the SD card and ignore the "Damaged SD Card" message
    2. Reboot the tablet and mount the SD card under Settings > Storage
    Alternatively, this procedure also worked:
    1. Turn the tablet OFF and insert the SD card
    2. Turn the tablet ON and mount the SD card under Settings > Storage

  • Cannot Format Encrypted SD Card?

    Hi guys,
I have an SD card, which I formatted as (Journaled, Encrypted), and forgot the password. Now I would like to use the card again, but I am not able to format it, because I cannot mount it on my Mac. Is there a way to do that?

I had the same problem...  Excite 7.7
Would not read my brand new 16gb Scandisk... nor the 8gb out of my ZeniTab.
It did read an old 2gb out of my old cell phone running Froyo.
So... I used the Zenith Tablet to "Erase" the 8gb - - then tried it in my Exite, and it WORKED!
So - - I took the NEW 16gb and erased it using my old tablet as well.
    Everything works now.
