Formatting a pen drive

Hi,
Ive recently seen the light & gone completely Mac
I have a question though..........
I have noticed that my pen drives/memory cards & hard drives are filling up even when
I delete everything on them they still show as full & cant take anymore files.
If I right click there isnt an option to format as in windows (sorry for swearing)
I,m sure somebody knows what I,m doing wrong BUT..... if I do format it on
my mac will I still be able to use it on a pc?
Many thanks,
Jeff

The reason they show full while appearing empty may be because you are not emptying your Trash. If you just drag stuff to the Trash from the drive, the file will no longer appear on the drive in Finder, but the file is still there (taking up the space) until you empty the Trash. This is true, even if you disconnect the drive and later connect it. Once you empty the Trash, the space used by those files will be freed up.
On a Mac, you reformat drives using Disk Utility. It is in the folder Applications/Utilities/. This is a very useful application, so you might want to add it to your Dock.
Anyways, connect the drive. Run Disk Utility. The drive should appear in the sidebar; select it. Go to the Erase tab. If you want to be able to use it on a PC or Mac, the only choice for Volume Format is +MS-DOS (FAT)+ (aka "FAT32"). The native Volume Format for Macs is +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+ (aka "HFS+"), but Windows cannot use that format. Mac OS X can read and write to FAT32.

  • Pen drive partition not detected

    good evening,
since i formatted my pen drive on windows with fat16/32 the sticks' partition doesn't show up anymore in /dev. there's just a new /dev/sdx and even cfdisk doesn't like the mbr anymore. so i formatted it on linux with mkfs.vfat to fat16/32 (wiped the mbr with dd first) and now windows doesn't like the stick anymore (says the drive isn't formatted) - fortunately might someone say but i'd like to use it on both os'.
this is the fat16 formatted mbr from linux:

    so here are my questions:
why does windows give a fuck on standards? (not recognizing standard mbr and ignoring partitiontable offset at 0x1be - no wonder cfdisk goes crazy) and how the heck do i get the stick working again on both os'? any special trick with mkfs.vfat?
    thanks in advance.

    Thanks for your further replies!
So i tried to format the device with the -I switch and the stick didn't work.. no matter how long i wait, there's no partition initialized at any time. I also got a brandnew stick from a store today and it didn't work from scratch with the delivered mbr - weird..
And according to the 'windows only likes the first partition'-thingie.. ridiculous - i'm currently at a point where nothing surprises me anymore about windows and it's incredible capability of incompatibility.

  • Pen drive write protected - Unable to format

I have a usb pen drive mounted. I cannot create any folder or delete any file. It says read only mode.
I also tried to formate it using the gparted tool, it says partition read only
I tried dd command it also says partition is read only file system
    sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb1
    Even dmesg gives some errors

I just want my pend drive to work. I am willing to erase all the data. I have searched on google, but there is no answer from linux side. From windows side they have a tool called "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool SP27608" which does. I dont want to shift to windows for this reason.except that i got a link for a windows software

  • Unable to Format HP 16GB v239 Pen Drive

    Sir,
We have HP 16GB v239 Pen Drive which storage limit is  15.02GB but while formatting the device storage shows on only 302MB limit for NTFS.....
Now I surprised for storage an error so we could not have format it to back to its original capacity storage(15.02GB)....
    Please guide me

It's a flaw in how DU reports the free space when the device is freshly formatted. If you select the Desktop icon and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window you will see that the full 15.7 GBs is reported as free.

  • Pen drive formatting issue..

    hello
    sir,
window is unable to complete format..
Pen drive is detecting but when i want to see it's property  it shwo us 0 byte.......... I have tried low level format, diskpart, HP pen drive format tool  but not success ,   HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool replys" Media is write protected.  "
& i have  a 4 gb HP pen drive which is not detecting in my laptop??

    Hello Mudsain,
If the pendrive is giving you a write protect warning, it might be fixed using USB Flash Driver Format Tool (Ufix-II).
    http://www.pny.com.tw/index.php?cls=2&mode=download
You may need to have 7-Zip installed to extract the .rar file. It is a free download. http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
Your going to extract "RecoverTool_V2.00.42_M1223 8CE.exe" from the downloaded file and run.
You should now be able to reformat the pendrive. IF this does not help, then the pendrive is most likey damaged and nothing more can be done.
If it is new, I would take it back to the store for a replacement or contact HP Support for more options.
Contact HP Worldwide | HP® Official Site
    Hope it helps.

  • Pen drive will not appear or format on iMac

    Hi
I have a 16gb hp pen drive and i used it with my imac one day then the next it will not appear unless viewed in the disk utility, even then it is greyed out. I need to format it as it has information i need to delete off it, but when i choose erase it comes up with the following error message. "POSIX reports: The operation couldn’t be completed. Cannot allocate memory"
Any ideas? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

I know this may be presumptuous of me, but have you tried plugging it in to other ports and or rebooting? Also, try using the First Aid of Disk Utility to repair and or verifying it.
I think there is some issue with Snow Leopard and USB drives. I have a 32 GB USB drive that will not be recognized on my powered USB hub, but will be recognized when plugged directly into my iMac. Yet, that same USB drive will be recognized while plugged into the powered USB hub by Windows 7 while running in virtualization mode.

  • I have Sony 4GB pen drive USM4GM, I formatted it on Win XP and after that it says write protected

I have Sony 4GB pen drive USM4GM, I formatted it on Win XP. whenever I try to access it, it asks to format again. when I click on the format buttom it says write protected. What is the solution for it

    Hi devinderdalal.
Try performing all the steps mentioned below to troubleshoot the issue:
Open Start Menu > Run, type regedit and press Enter. This will open the registry editor.
    Navigate to the following path:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
Double click the key "WriteProtect" in the right pane and set the value to 0.
In the Data Value Box, press OK.
Exit Registry, restart your computer and then re-connect your USB pen drive to your computer.
If my post answers your question, please mark it as an "Accepted Solution."

  • Using pen drive from pc

I have a pen drive that I used in my windows pc, and now I am wondering how to convert the information so that my mac can read it?

Have you plugged the pen drive into the Mac yet?
Mac's can read Windows formats, just can't write to NTFS formatted drives.
    Drives, partitions, formatting w/Mac's + PC's
Since the Mac can read it, the files can be transfered to the Mac.
Now it's just a matter of the format of the files themselves, and what programs can read/write to these formats.
Some developers make programs for both OS X and Windows operating systems, so it's just a matter of getting the OS X verison.
If there isn't a OS X version, perhaps it can be converted or another program used to use the file or partially in some manner so it can be recontructed.
Some file formats are universal, can be opened in nearly all programs capable. (mp3, .jpg, .text. etc)
So I guess at this point you will need to know the file formats of the files, and what OS X programs can open/use them.
This can be done by looking at the extension on the end of the file name, like myimage.jpg, or myresume.txt, or rockingold.mp3 and finding a program that will pen/use the file format.

  • Pen Drive Failure

I have a 16 GB pen drive that I used to use to copy 5GB+ files to my windows partition. No matter the OS, It fails at 4.1 Gb copying from the drive, and the only way to make it work again it to reformat. One time I reformatted it and a week later I put it in and had copy error #0. It is a kingston drive. I think the flash is just bad or has a bad spot and will be irreparable but it would be good to get a second opinion.

    Hi Hivetyrant36;
You have just discovered one of the limitations of FAT formating. That is it can only work with files up to 4 GB.

  • Pen drive usb transcend crazy over arch linux

The model in question is a pen drive 4Gb Transcend JetFlash V33 that when I enter the port usb notebook with arch Linux not mount automatically (which have done all pen drive I used up to now, friends, colleagues, etc. ...). With gparted (from arch linux) tells me that the pen drive has a space-512mb (unless, that is negative) and space is not allocated (not formatted). Impossible mount from terminal, I type a message from the beginning that the size of the device can not be found after its end (and we believe with a capacity of -512). I gave the pen drive to a friend with windows Xp, where it is regularly recognized (4 gb, FAT 32). Even with the live CD systemrescueCD is regularly recognized and I move into pen a text file above (to test) after mounted it using the terminal. The text file was also seen in windows Xp. I didn't experiment with other Linux distributions. Someone knows that cabbage can be. Sorry for my bad english. Thank you.

It is definitely able to recognize the USB and DVDs as separate drives; it gives the option of booting from USB, and it gives the memory capacity of the USB drive I used as a live USB, and the memory used for the live CD.  But when it comes time to actually boot, something is going wrong.
I would suspect it is a problem with the BIOS, if not for the fact that I had a similar issue on my previous system, which used a completely different motherboard.  If it is the same issue, it would either have to be a problem with the DVD drive (although I don't know why it would be against loading some live CDs but not others) or perhaps the way I created the live CDs.  Although, again, I don't understand why the Linux Mint 32-bit DVD would work fine, while both 64-bit DVDs would not.
I will try using a different DVD drive to boot the DVDs, and if that does not work, I'll try creating a new Arch live CD to see if I can resolve the issue.  But if anyone has any ideas, it would still be greatly appreciated.

  • Pen drive not recognised by Mac

    Hi,
Recently I have bought a 8GB Transcend Jet V30 Pen drive which was pre-formatted in FAT32 file system. The pen drive is working fine with PC(winXP) but not at all recognsied by MAC though the pen drive is getting power from USB port. We have 5 Mac Pro at office, I tried with each of them but no luck though there is no problem in working with PC.
I've re-formatted the drive several times in FAT32 format with the help of different formatting tool but no joy.I've checked 'Disk Utility' in MAC but no mention of the pen drive there. There is no icon getting generated on the desktop.
I have a couple of 2GB pen drives of same make which work fine with mac and PC both. Please help me, pen drive appearing to be pain drive for me.
    Thanking all,
    emrck

I've re-formatted the drive several times in FAT32 format with the help of different formatting tool
Since the Mac is not seeing the drive, I assume you did the formatting on a PC - correct? You might try this. Erase the drive on the PC & then plug into the Mac. Will Disk Utility see it? If so, format FAT32 with Disk Utility.
Here's a couple of formatting instructions.

  • Problems with mp3 pen-drives to listen in the car

    Hi everyone,
i'm from Italy and a new happy iMac 27" owner by 1 month..
i 'm really glad to have and use this wonderful machine , I come from years and years of Pc-Win.
The only thing, for now, that causes some problems is about  saving and listening, in my car, mp3 files on USB pen drives.
Before, using a a normal Pc-Win, i could save mp3 files and listen them in my car, but now using my iMac i can still save them but i can't listen them in my car. Something doesn't work.
if i create a pen-drive with my mp3 files i can listen only few of them, but many files don't play.
    - I created the pen-drive (FAT formatted/initialized) using iTunes, drag and drop the files on the pen drive icon
    - I tried to create the pen drive using only Finder App
    - i tried to change the pen drive
    - I tried to check the differences between the files that work and the others, but it seems there is no much differences
    - I tried to erase the pen drive trash
    .. nothing
the problem is still here, i can only listen a few tracks.
Somebody knows something about this problem ?
Thanks a lot in advance... sorry for my english

I bought an inexpensive set ($7) of portable speakers that run on 3 AAA batteries. My iPod plugs into it thru the headphone jack and has a little rest for the iPod. The sound results are pretty good and they are small so I can put it on the floor, seat or even in the cupholder and still hear my music. It kind of looks like the bookshelf sound system they sell only much smaller as the speakers are on each side of the ipod. I got mine at Big Lots. But I am sure lots of other places sell them.

  • How to delete locked files on pen drive

I have a pen drive which has 2 partitions and there is no problem with one partition.  Other partition shows itself as "CDROM" and none of the files in that partition could be deleted.  There is no option to format the entire pen drive also.  Even if I format it, the "CDROM' partition still remains.

    Hi Scott,
    2 ways to go...
      1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion do a new install.
    Or...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
In the same pref pane highlight your old account, click the little minus icon, then use Disk Utility to Secure Erase Free Space.
