Formatting a WD Elements 3TB external drive...temporary file normal?

Hi All,
I am, I hope, at the end of a 36+ hour formatting process with this WD Elements 3TB external drive. I decided to zero out the drive and when I went to bed last night at around 12am, there were about 6 hours left in the process. This morning at aroud 9am I went to check on the drive, expecting it to be ready to go, but I found it writing a temporary file. The progress bar is about 90% done. Is this part of the normal zeroing out process? If so, how long should this take? If this ISN'T part of the normal process, what should I do?
Thanks to all who read this, many thank to those who respond.

Yes, DU is creating a huge file of Zeros and will confirm, the driver software will map off any failing sectors before you lay data on it.
That is a good proceedure your doing, because if you run out of spare sectors the drive is bad and you can get a refund/exchange right away.

3TB? well 500GB should take about a hour and a half, so 9 hours and it should have been completed.
36+ hours, there is either something wrong with the drive, or DU is not prepared to handle drives in that large amount. which I suspect is more the case, but I might be wrong.
Likely 1TB is it's limit, so use partitions and zero each of those, then reformat.

  • New Toshiba 3tb external drive not recognized at startup WIn 7

My new toshiba 3tb external drive (with wall wart power) is not recognized at start up (Win7). The message I get is that it is a USB storage device but can not be used until it is formatted (I already moved files to it). If I plug it in after start up it's fine and shows up as a toshiba storage device. I've used the 2.0 and 3.0 ports and it is the same problem (it has wall wart power). I have never encountered this problem with any other usb storage device  (an iomega 1tb and a WD 500gb) always plugged in and recognized at start up.
    Thoughts?

Please provide your complete model number of your system.
By doing so, we will be in a better position to provide you assistance.
    Thank you,

  • Using a 3TB external drive?

It appears that 10.5.8 will not support a 3TB external drive as a single unit? Hitachi has a patch for windows but they indicate that Mac Os X should support the 3TB drive. Do I have to upgrade to 10.6 ? The Drive is recognized as 768GB drive and the limitation seems to be 2.2Gb . Is there a workaround?

Some additional observations:  I installed one of the HItachi 3TB (Green, variable speed) drives (yes, using GUID partition at initialization) in an older G5 Mac running 10.5, and it recognized the drive and would format it in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  However, the size was only 2.7TB, and when I tried using the G5 as an external drive in target disk mode with the 27" iMac (running 10.6), it would recognize the 150GB system HDD, but insisted on initializing the Hitachi 3TB drive as an 801.57GB drive in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
I also tried the tarket disk mode using a 13" MacBook Pro running Lion (10.7) and it did the exact same thing.
Note, it shows the S.M.A.R.T. status as "Unknown" when erroneously depicting the drive as 801.57GB, whereas it is "verified" when connecting with eSata cables where it shows the proper 3TB size and will format properly all day long?  Again, eSata works great, but no easy way to have an eSata connection in the iMacs or smaller MacBook Pros.
Note I also installed one of these Hitachi 3TB drives in a 27" iMac (late 2009) and it ran so HOT (fans going wild, WAY too noisy) that I took it out an reinstalled the original factory 2TB drive.  YES, I installeld the thermal sensor correctly, and YES I used the same manufacturer for the HDD, and YES I tried the various fan speed software, but the fans were running and it was noisy just because the drive runs HOT from what I can tell, even in an external enclosure.
This is going to be a real problem as the need for larger 3TB (and more) storage exists, so I hope someone figures out why

Select the desired location in preferences, then consolidate the media files to it.

If this is an external USB drive, you must understand that USB is really, really slow. There may be nothing wrong except for that.
In my opinion, USB external drives are only acceptable for backups, and to get "near Hard Drive" performance, you need FireWire.

  • Disk Utility won't format my WD Elements 1TB Hard Drive.

I've searched the forums for this and have seen several questions addressing this but none of the solutions are working for me. Here's my problem:
My IMac died on me the other day and would not reboot. Spoke with Apple support and they decided my OS had become corrupted and that the only solution was a complete reinstall. To save my data the rep walked me through installing the OS on an external HD. This has worked great and I'm currently working off that drive and have managed to pull a lot of my data off the IMac's HD to that external drive. But I've run out of space; it was only 120GB and I've got about 144 GB of data left to retrieve. So I purchased a WD Elements 1 TB external HD and want to do the same thing that I did with other drive...install the operating system on it and pull all the data off the original computer HD to it. But I cannot for the life of me get anything to work. Unfortunately I purchased a drive that is formatted for windows (NTFS). I've gone through the steps found in this forum, and they're the same steps the rep walked me through with the first drive: launch Disc Utility, select the drive, click Partition, give the volume a name, click options to choose GUID Partition Table, and then under Volume Scheme: choose Partition 1, click apply.
But what happens with this drive is the minute I change the Volume Scheme from "current" to "partition 1", all the options and buttons go grey. So I'm unable to click apply to make the changes. I've tried several different times and nothing is working. I've even tried to just format it using the "current" volume scheme but that gives me an error...something about partition failed...permission denied.
At this point I'd be happy with just formatting the drive so I can just drag the files I want off onto it...but I can't seem to find any solutions. I took the drive to a Windows XP machine I have and tried to format it from NTFS to Fat32, thinking maybe the Mac would work with it then but my XP machine won't format into Fat32...only EXFat. Tried that but the Mac wouldn't even show the drive then. Have reformatted it back to NTFS now.
I'm probably going to end up calling Mac support again but they're closed now I'm just curious to see what you folks might be able to come up with.
Good thing I shave my head as I'd have probably ripped it all out by now.

den.thed....that's interesting. The drive I have been having problems doesn't say anywhere on it that it has that Smartware software on it. Didn't see any files on the drive at all. After tech support at both Western Digital and Apple said they'd never heard of this before, I'm returning the drive and buying one that's preformatted for Apple. The drive I ordered does have that software on it, but since I have no fancy plans for this drive other than just backing up files with Time Machine I'll probably just install their software and be happy if it works. If it causes a problem I'll look into that link you suggested.
The Mac support guy I spoke to thought that if I could get the drive formatted into Fat32 it should be able to be reformatted by my Mac. But after having to download software so that I could get it formatted into Fat32 (My XP machine only gave me the option of ExFat), it still wouldn't work. As soon as I tried to assign the partition under the volume scheme all my options greyed out and I could proceed no further. Very frustrating.
So we'll find out tomorrow if the new drive does the tricks.
So even though my problem was not solved, I appreciate the feedback and advice.

  • Format and partition HD without external drive - how to...

Just got a new previous gen imac and before I start saving stuff, I want to partition the drive. I'm thinking this can be done with the install disc. I'm wanting to make a partition for a Superduper Sandbox, and a scratch disc for photoshop. Is there specific directions for doing this without an external drive anywhere?
I'm not sure how important it is to have a scratch disc as I'll have 3gb ram, and I'll leave a lot of free space....any thoughts on this?

You can do it from the install disk by booting from it then instead of doing an install select a language and then, go to the utility menu and select "Disk Utility". You can then create the partitions you want, name then, and decide the size of them. After that you will have to install a new OS. Remember that doing all of this will erase the drive, so if you have any data on it you want to keep you need to get it of first.
Mac Help can guide you through this process. You could also open up the Disk Utility application which is in your utilites folder and use those application specific help files. I am making this sound complicated but really, it is not.

  • Seagate 3TB External Drive not mounting

    The light is on but no-one is home.  Recently upgraded iPhone4 to OS7.1.2 (which required reboot) and since then the Seagate External Drive is not mounting on the desktop. Computer details below;
    MacBook Pro Model 5.5
2.26  GHZ Intel Core 2 duo
    Boot rom Version: MBP55.00AC.B03
    SMC Version (system) 1.4f2.
The problem started with OSX 10.6.8 (when upgraded iPhone OS), I tried Disk Utility didn't work.  Have upgraded to 10.9.4 still won't show.  Have check preferences, used Disk Utility & SMC reboot to no avail.
I did connect to another MacBook Pro 5.5 running OSX 10.6.8 and external drive would not mount.
Any suggestions..?? or is the external drive fried..

    How old is the drive?
If you put your hand on the drive do you feel any vibrations?
Restart with drive attached. If this fails to mount the drive in Disk Utility, it sounds like the drive has died.
If you can see the drive in Disk Utility you might try Repair Drive. You might have to erase the drive to repair.

  • External drive - full file or relocate original?

    Hello,
I have run into an issue where my Aperture file is now taking up too much space on my iMac(about 130gb).  I have my external drive always hooked up to my iMac and have more then 1tb left, so I would like to transfer my file over to the external.  Ive seen differant options on her,  just wondering which one would be best for me, and what the advantages would be for one over the other.
    My options are
    1. Move the full aperture file over the the external and not have it on my iMac at all
    or
    2. Relocate the original files over to a directory on the external and still have the main file on my iMac
Will having the main file on the iMac with my current year only on the iMac (previous years relocated to the external) work better, or should I just move the full file to the external and open it from there?
Remember, I have my external hooked up all the time as this is a stationary computer.
Thanks for any advice you can give
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
It's impossible to say without more information (and likely testing).  RAM and CPU and more likely to be performance bottlenecks than drive throughput, IME.
I suggest moving your Aperture Library to your external drive and running it from there.  (I assume it is FW800, USB-3, or Thunderbolt.)  Double-click the Library file in Finder in order to launch Aperture the first time after you move the Library -- the program will remember the new location of your Library.
I manage several Libraries, some of them quite large, and all but one are run from dedicated external drives.
If you find this set-up does not meet your needs, then you should consider putting the Library back on your system drive and relocated some (or all) of your Image's Originals to your external drive (as you mention).
Remember that you may have to manually add any files on your external drive to your back-up sets.

  • How can i backup external drive iphoto files with Time Machine?

I just can't figure out how to be sure my external drive is being backed up to Time Machine external Seagate HD, the most important files being some 24,000 family photos. Help!  The forums I have tried seem to keep missing the point with the question.

  • Moved iTunes to an external drive, library files can't be located - help?!?

So ok, I knew it couldn't be that easy...
I copied my iTunes to an external drive to free up space on my laptop - followed the instructions for moving files on a PC - and got to the part about moving the old iTunes folder to the recycle bin. Well, the recycle bin wasn't large enough for the folder, so it deleted everything straight out of MyComputer. Apparently the "library files" went with it.
Now I can see all my songs/movies/videos in folders on the external, but can't get my iTunes to associate with it when I open it.
Is there any way to fix this? I'm tearing my hair out, here. I have a full backup on DVDs - will that help?
    Thanks!

got to the part about moving the old iTunes folder to the recycle bin.
There is no part about moving the _iTunes folder_ to the recycle bin.
There is a part about moving th _iTunes music folder_ to the recycle bin.
Did you move them to the external by using iTunes menu File -> Library -> Consolidate?
Or did you move them to the external yourself?
Which folders exactly did you move?

  • Recover external drive with file salvage

Hi guys, By mistake I hit erase on disk utility on the wrong drive. I didnt use the drive at all after that so file salvage did recovered a lot of stuff. My problem is the media is grouped in the folders dv and quictime but Im not able to see the video, on the dv folder the quictimes have all square colors around the screen and the quictime folder is all white. and on both cases theres no audio. Im doing the process again and see if it works but does anyone has any experience recovering an external drive with it? is there another way to recover the media?
Please let me know, im desperate to recover this drive!
    thanks a lot

My recommendation is use one Caldigit in RAID 0 for editing (we'll call it C 1) and use the other Caldigit (C 2) as a backup.
When you get new material, copy it to C 1, then to C 2. Take C 2 off line. You can not accidentally erase a drive if it is not connected and/or turned on.
    Edit your projects.
At the end of the day, back up C 1 to C 2.
As C 1 and C 2 fill, you will need to move older and/or finished material off of them. Get a MacBurly or other 2 drive enclosure with swapable drive bays. You could also just get a simple bare drive housing like the Voyager Q. Purchase a pair of bare drives (always purchase your drives in pairs). We'll call this first pair: Archive01 and Archive01.back. Backup whatever you need to remove from the Caldigits to your Archive01 and Archive01.back drives. Test that the material transferred ok to the new drives then take them offline. If you are using the Voyager, put them on a shelf. Delete what you just copied from the Caldigits.
    Rinse and repeat as necessary.
Keep in mind, a drive placed on a shelf and not used is probably more prone to failure than one used constantly. So, every few weeks, spin all the drives up and run disk utility on them to verify they are ok. This gives the heads a workout and keeps the drive from seizing up.
    Aren't you glad you asked?
    Good luck,
    x

  • 3TB external drive appears to be 801,23GB

I just bought a Western Digital 3.0TB caviar green disk drive and plugged into a Freecom Hard Drive Dock Quattro with the provided FW800 cable and the disk appears to be 801,23GB on OS X Lion. I have tried to reformat with Disk Utility but nothing changes. Is this hard drive supported?

OSX can handle 3TB harddisks and format them correctly to full size.
However, there seem to be problems with the WD Green 3TB and external harddisk enclosures according to this thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/15362222#15362222
