Formatting APEX Applications

Hello:
I would like to format the pages on my reports and forms for an application.
I would like to add the company logo, a heading on each page, and apply some CSS formatting.
How do I go about doing this type of things?
For CSS, when programming in HTML, you use DIV ID or DIV CLASS. How do you apply CSS into APEX?
Thank you for the help.

Hi,
What you need to look into is Templates and Themes (a Theme being a collection of templates that, together, create a unified look and feel for the application) - these are available via Shared Components.
Every part of an Apex page, including the page itself, is based on a template. Within the template definitions are the HTML tags and CSS stylings that you are used to.
How you go about designing your own is a matter of choice - you can use an existing theme, edit an existing theme or create your own (there is documentation available at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10513_01/doc/appdev.310/e10499/ui.htm#BABJEDBB to explain how to do this).

  • APEX application deployment

    Hi All,
I will soon be exporting my first APEX application from a development database to a test database. I do not want to export the data which the application is built on as the development database contains sample data instead of the "real" data. Before exporting my application, I will of course install APEX 3.2.1 in the test environment and then import the "real" data into the test database so that once the application has been exported and installed in the new environment, the APEX application will already have its data in place.
On page 14-12 in Chapter 14 of the Oracle Application Express Application Builder User's Guide, I saw the following section:
    Exporting an Application
When you export an application, Oracle Application Express generates a text file containing PL/SQL API calls.
    To export an application:
    1. Navigate to the Export page:
    a. On the Workspace home page, click the Application Builder icon.
    b. Select an application.
    c. On the Application home page, click Export/Import.
    d. On the Export/Import page, click Export and then click Next.
    2. From Application, select the application to be exported.
    3. From File Format, select how rows in the export file will be formatted:
    ■ Choose UNIX to have the resulting file contain rows delimited by line feeds.
    ■ Choose DOS to have the resulting file contain rows delimited by carriage
    returns and line feeds.
    4. From Owner Override, optionally select another owner. By default, the application is owned by the owner identified in the application attribute owner.
    5. From Build Status Override, select one of the following:
    ■ Run Application Only - Developers can only run an application
    ■ Run and Build Application - Developers can both run and edit an application
Selecting Run Application Only is an effective way to protect an application from modifications from other developers.
    6. From Debugging, select one of the following:
    ■ Yes exports the application with debugging enabled.
    ■ No exports the application with debugging disabled.
    7. From Exporting Supporting Object Definitions, specify whether to export
supporting object definitions with your application.
    8. From Export Comments, specify whether to export comments for this application.
See "Adding Developer Comments" on page 6-22.
    9. Use the As of field to export your application as it was previously defined. Specify the number of minutes in the field provided.
    10. Click Export Application
Since I do not have any images, themes, static files, workspace users, cascading style sheets, etc, to export, it makes no sense to use the “Packaged Application” method to perform the export. All I need is the application definition that contains all my interactive reports, forms, etc.
The next step would then be to Import the application into the target Oracle Application Express instance and install the application.
This method should be OK for my needs, right?
    Thanks

By simply doing an application export, all you will export is the metadata associated with your application (page definitions, items, processes, validations etc).
No "Customer Data" will be exported neither will any tables or PL/SQL packages that are owned by your parsing schema.
If you aim is simply to export the APEX application and no tables, pl/sql units, data etc, then doing a simple application export should be good enough. Thats all we ever do and then add the PL/SQL units / table data on top as additional scripts.
    Hope that helps

  • PDF generation on APEX applications Reports

    Hi all
PDF generation on APEX applications is Facilitated in Interactive Reports in the Down load Option,
When we Choose this pdf Down load Option, this is not Working.
    why this is not Working?
But this Down load Facility in Interactive Reports is Working fine with Excel Format
Do we need to Install & configure FOP/Cocoon or BI Publisher to Enable PDF Format DOWNLOAD
    OR
any Other Work around Availble for this
    please Suggest
    tahnks Alot

To generate PDF file from APEX reports, you either have to install & configure Bi Publisher or FOP/Cocoon..
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/configure_printing.html
There are alternatives (jasper reports, pl/pdf), but they are also items you need to install and configure..

  • Not Able to Print in PDF Format Apex

we are not able to print in pdf format with using a template, if we use default layout we are getting a pdf output,
Can any one please help me on this issue....
    Thanks
    Malleswar

    Hello Malleswar,
we are not able to print in pdf format with using a template, if we use default layout we are getting a pdf output,If your scenario with APEX Listener is generally capable of producing a PDF when using a working template, than the error is very likely to be in your template, not in APEX Listener.
If that's the case, you'll probably find more people with experiences on how to build custom xsl-templates into your APEX application in the APEX forum: {forum:id=137}.
If you decide to post there (or even if you think it's better to continue here), please provide information on your APEX and APEX Listener version and whether you see some error information in APEX Listeners log when trying your own template or not. If you don't see anything there right now, enabling debug mode will make the log more verbose and probably provide a hint on which part of your template can't be processed properly by the FOP built into APEX Listener.

  • Publish XDB web service on apex application

Could any one please help me out to use native oracle XML DB web service on apex application.
In apex application, basically i need to have a report that displays all PO requests with links to each request # to drill down to the form page where the vendor are allowed to submit some corresponding data to th PO request.
All i need is to know how do i use the native oracle XML DB web service to show the report to the vendors with drill down links and capture the data, the vendor submits through the form.
    Thanks in advance!!
    Regards,
    Rame

I think you might be on the wrong track. Web services don't "show" anything really. They take in either XML in the case of SOAP-style web services or an HTTP request in the case of restful web services. They typically return XML, but can return JSON or other machine readable formats. Web services don't have forms and reports. More information here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_service . To have a human interact with a web service, you typically have a UI layer. For instance, in APEX you can build a form or a report on a web service (the same is true for most popular web technologies).
In APEX 4.0+ you can expose a report as a restful web service, but I really don't think that is what you want to do. There's no way that I can think of to use the XDB web services to expose any component of APEX.
In short, people interact with web applications, such as APEX apps. Machines, such as databases or application servers, interact with web services.
So, do you need to expose some component of your application as an API (web service) that vendors can call programmatically from some other technology such as Java or PHP? Or do you want to build a web application that people can interact with?

  • Problem with logging in to apex application builder listener

I have problem with my settings and am posting this in hope that someone else out there had similar problem and solved it!
I am trying to use reverseproxy to access to our db through apex listener.
It's been all set-up and I can login to the application it self either through proxy or no proxy using the listener.
But when I try to login to apex application builder I cannot do it through proxy(with no proxy, it works).
It just refreshes the login page when I click login....
I tried to upgrade the listener to the latest v1.1(using 1.0.2) but it causes my tomcat to crash...
So solution i am looking for is how to make logging in work through proxy..
In the firebug it is showing that below and few other request status as 302 moved temporariry
    http://myserver:8080/testsin/apex/wwv_flow.accept
Where as with no proxy it is saying Found.....
    Any thoughts??
    Thanks
    Sin K

    Hello Sin K,
so proxy and Tomcat are located on different machines as well? Is the proxy able to commuicate with the Tomcat on the configured internal ports and is the proxy able to lookup the hostname you configured for the Tomcat?
For the connector, the proxyName and proxyPort should be the parameters the client uses to call APEX. So if your clients should call via http://proxyserver:8080/testsin/apex the settings would be
    proxyName=proxyserver
proxyPort=8080Reason for this is that applications (e.g. the APEX Listener) generate there URL references with these parameters.
But does your proxy actually serve on port 8080? And is that port accessible by clients? Do clients accept cookies from that server?
In my case, there is only one 302 which redirects to http://host:port/apex/f?p=4500:1000:sessionid which is correct.
If you look into your first post request in firebug, what's in the request header?

  • How to log in automatically to an Apex application

I'm looking for a way to launch an Apex app that uses database authentication from e.g. Forms without having to enter your username and password again and I found this clue in a document about extending Oracle Applications 11i with Apex:
"The next problem to overcome is the automatic logon to the Apex application. Here two approaches that could be used are:
    1. Create an Apex public logon page where you can supply the username and password as parameters to the page;
    2. Pass the username and password from Applications 11i to Apex in a cookie."
I'm more interested in the first option but I can't find any examples of it. The Apex sample application seems to have a login page but I can't figure out how it would accept the username and password as parameters?

    Pauli,
This might be useful: Re: Direct Login to Application Remember to use https (SSL) if you are passing clear text passwords around, otherwise you need a more secure technique.

  • Flash contents not being displayed on the published Apex application URL

I've had to publish one of my apex application through an bluecoat proxy to reach my Oracle HTTP server. It works fantastic for everything - except my flash charts. Flash contents are not getting loaded.Issue is only in the published application URL,the same application is working fine internally without proxy.
Does anyone have any idea why this is failing and how I might fix this?.The bluecoat support enginner is having the following findings
I am seeing some strange behavior when the browser goes through the
proxy vs when it does not.
When the browser uses the proxy the last thing it requests is the

    That is the browser requests

    200 ok from the proxy/server.
When the browser does not use the proxy I see the following
    behavior(packet 2783):
    The browser requests
    http://anupserver:7777/i/themes/theme_20/btn-bg.gif 2 times, each time
the server responds with a 304 not modified status, this means the
browser has the most recent copy of the .gif file. The browser finally
does a post to http://anupserver:7777/pls/apex/wwv_flow.accept. Given
that the browser gets a 200 ok response from the proxy when requesting
    http://ithelpdesk.anupcomp.ae/i/themes/theme_20/btn-bg.gif and then
stops requesting data, we need to understand why the browser is behaving
differently without the proxy(i.e. why does it request the content 2
times and why is it doing the post). The interaction between the
browser and the proxy appears normal, a 200 ok response with content is
normal, why does the browser stop requesting content?

  • Import of Apex Application to another instance takes a long time

    Hi,
I have developed an apex application which is of size -24 MB .While importing the appl to another instance it takes a long time (few hours). The imported appl is working fine so far.
What should be the ideal time for the import of this size appl ?
Is it the usual due to the size of the app or some thing is wrong with the app ?
Any one can please throw some light on this, as I am unable to figure out if it the appl issue or the DB issue.
    Thanks in advance!

The application is getting imported and running, so you do not really have a problem in hand.
24M is big, but not all that big to run for hours.
The time taken depends on the resources available on the server where you are trying to import. If the load on that server is high then the resources will be shared between all the processes run on it, and the import process will run longer.
Monitor disk and CPU usage, it will provide you some clues. Try importing at offpeak time and it should run faster if there is a server resource issue.

  • APEX Application behaviour in a RAC setup

    Hi
Caveat first: I'm pretty new to Oracle RAC and just looking into it as an option. We have an APEX application currently running in Oracle 11gR2 single node currently and are considering HA for this.
My question is: What would be the expected behaviour seen by a User of an APEX application, in the event of a node failure, when running with an OHS / RAC configuration? Will they get "transparent fail-over" and see nothing or will they see an error?
I appreciate I could post in the APEX forum, but feel that is probably more of a development forum and possibly someone here has had to look at things at this level.
I have read what I think may be the definitive reference for this:
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/apex/learnmore/apex-rac-wp-133532.pdf
but while it covers most of what I want I don't believe I have found an answer to my question
    This states:
"The Transparent Application Failover (TAF) feature of Oracle Net Services is a runtime failover for high-availability environments. It enables client applications to automatically reconnect to the database if the connection fails and, optionally, resume a SELECT statement that was in progress. The reconnection happens automatically from within the Oracle Call Interface (OCI) library. For applications that do insert, update or delete transactions, the application must trap the error when the failure occurs, rollback the transaction, and then resubmit. If the application is not written to be TAF aware, the session will get disconnected."
However (as I understand it) APEX runs in the database and would fail with the database, it isn't a typical "client application" connecting to Oracle via a TAF aware connection pool - it is essentially a large pl/sql package and TAF only covers SELECT statements not packages.
May be I'm over-reading this and it's simpler than that: APEX/Mod_plsql might just handle it?
    - APEX User/HTTP session state is stored in database APEX: Understanding session state which is available on other nodes
    - Mod_plsql in OHS can detect the error returning and reissues the request to good server and APEX on that instance can retrieve Users/HTTP state and process the request (APEX/RAC doc states mod_plsql can see an error from database and cleanup connection up and form a new connection, but not that it will retry the request for the client into other APEX/DB node).
I'm really just after a (transparent/non-transparent) statement based on experience, but an outline of how the components behave would be useful.
    Thanks in advance
    Dave

    Hi
Any chance of getting that link outside of Metalink? - I'm trying to get our customer support id, but no luck at present.
I'm aware that APEX can run with RAC (as per the link I posted) - I'm really after next level info around behaviour in that environment.
    Thanks
    Dave

  • APEX application starts very slow

    Hi all,
I have developed a small apex application for my website. I am running this application on OracleXE. Every time I when I log in the response is extremily slow. It will take approx. 1 min before the login page appears, then it takes another 20 sec. before the homepage appears. After that you can notice that the application is getting faster and faster. If I stop working with the application and I start working again after 1 hour the same thing happens.
I log in localy, not thru my website, but I can imagine that people that approach the application thru the website will experience the same.
What is causing this ? Is the database going into some sort of 'sleeping mode' ?
How can I prevent this ? The database is (ofcourse) running 24/7. Any help will be appreciated, because people will stay away when everytime the responsetime is as long as 1 min before they can login.

This seems to be a issue specific to Oracle XE

  • APEX Application accessing data from two different databases

    Hi All,
Currently as we all know that APEX Application resides in database and is connected to the schema of that database.
I want APEX Application to be running and accessing data from two different databases. Elaborating my question,
Currently, my APEX Production Application is connected with XXXX Schema of DB1 Database(Where APEX Resides). Now I want to add some pages into this APEX Application for REPORT Purpose, But I want to connect this REPORT APEX Pages to get data from Different Schema YYYY for Database DB2.
Is it possible to configure this scenario?
The reason for doing this is to avoid the REPORT related (adhoc queries) resource utilization effect on Production DB1 Database.
    Thanks
    Nil

    1. If you do the joining of two or more tables in DB1 then all data is pulled over to DB1 and then the join is executed: so more data over the databaselink and more work for DB1. Better keep the joining stuff where the data resides and just pull exactly that data over that you need.
    2. Don't know about your different block sizes. Seems a nice question for one of the other forums (DBA or SQL).
    3. I mean create synonyms on DB1 for reports VIEWS in DB2.
    Hope all is clear!

  • APEX application integration into Java application

    Hello,
I'm working on a new APEX application and I would like to integrate that application into an existing Java application.
The integration should be invisible for the end-users. Our application will have the same look and feel as the Java application.
The existing menu of the Java app will be extended with a new link. This link will then call our application.
Visually I was thinking about using an Iframe to display the content of the APEX application inside the Java generated xHTML.
This is however not the biggest issue.
We are working in a secure context and we thus need to make sure that our APEX application doesn't create a backdoor on the
security mechanism provided by the Java app.
Some options have come to mind, but the one that look best is this:
We keep the java application as the single point of entry for our end-users and make sure that the apex application is "hidden".
We could do this by means of some re-routing code in the java application so that the incomming requests there are send to the correct server (java or apex).
Then we will need to capture the response of the APEX application and place it inside the Java generated xHTML. The combined content is then send to the client.
Or we could place a reverse proxy server that does this for us.
The goal is thus that we can rely on the existing java application to cover the security and the navigation structure.
    Any ideas on this ?
    How-to's or other options ?

  • Info : Migrating Apex Application from Non-SSO to SSO environment

    Hi All,
This post is to share my experience while working on APEX. This may be useful to some apex developer.
If we migrate an apex application from a non-sso (i.e. http) to sso (i.e. https) environment, the flash chart doesn't work.
I found that in the source of a Flash Chart region, we use #HOST# variable to locate the swf file. The environment variable takes the correct path but with "http" as prefix. But to access application pages "https" is used. Because of which, the swf file couldn't be located by the application.
Work-around Solution : If I hard code the value i.e. the application path having "https" replacing #HOST# variable then the flash chart works fine. I couldn't found a way by which the #HOST# parameter value can be updated to take "https".
The same environment host other non-sso applications as well.
Any comments on this are welcomed.

    Mangal

    Hi Dirk,
    Thanks for the reply.
As I mentioned earlier, by Non-SSO I mean "http" and by SSO I mean "https". This is because, before migration the application was accessible using "http" and now we have to use "https" alongwith SSO to access the application. I only want to highlight the Flash Chart issue with this migration.
The problem doesn't solves with your solution as I am getting correct instance/environment name with #HOST# but prefixed with "http" and not "https". Hence the application won't be able to locate the required swf file.
Even the workaround I mentioned is only feasible, if an application has only few Flash Charts. However, if there are large no. of Flash charts in an application, then it would be a tedious task to update all flash chart source either by an application item (as you mentioned in your post) or hard coding the path itself. Also, every new Flash Chart source needs to be updated by a developer to fix this.
A better solution is required by which the Flash chart source is not touched and the #HOST# variable for the application is updated to take the "https" prefixed to the swf file path.
