Formatting Bookmarks

I'd like to be able to mix formatting in Acrobat bookmarks; that is, have part of the bookmark in plain text and part in italics. For example, a bookmark ought to be able to look like this:
i Me, Myself
and
i I
. The referenced words themselves are italicized, but the word 'and' is not. Presently, of course, we can set the bookmark's properties only to the same format (plain, bold, italic, or bold italic) for the entire bookmark. It's been suggested that I use quotation marks to separate the referecned words from the word 'and' ("Me," "Myself" and "I") but that is not how the words appear in the PDF document itself.

It would be better to try to undelete a text file like a JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder instead of a large binary file like places.sqlite. Because all the MFT entries and index data is gone, your only option is probably a low level data search for specific content of such a .json backup.<br />
You can open a JSON backup to see what the first bytes of such a file look like:
<pre><nowiki>{"title":"","id":1,"dateAdded"</nowiki></pre>

  • Copy favorites from Windows 8.1 folder to Bookmarks

I just restored my backups from Carbonite to a new computer with Windows 8.1 (old computer was Windows 7) using Firefox. I kept a folder of my bookmarks in my documents. How can I get them into the new bookmarks? I found a folder called "bookmarkbackups" in my Profiles, but I don't know if I use that, or how to copy it to the current bookmarks. Or - is there a different way to do this? Thanks.

Regarding importing IE Favorites, you probably would have the best luck copying the contents of your old Windows Favorites folder into the new Windows Favorites folder. Then you can export an HTML-format file from IE and import that into Firefox.
Importing an HTML-format bookmarks file adds onto your existing Firefox bookmarks. But you need to do it after you do the restore mentioned in the earlier post, because a restore wipes out everything present in your Firefox bookmarks.
    * Export favorites from IE to an HTML file: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/add-view-organize-favorites (Export Favorites is one of the topics listed at the bottom of the page)

    Success?

  • My G5 died, but I have connected it's hard-drive to my Mac Mini to use an external drive. How do I retrieve all my Fierfox bookmarks from it?

When I stat up Firefox on either my Mack Mini or the attached G5 hard-drive it is acting like its a new account. And I don't have a back up of my bookmarks.

Firefox would store its data in the profile folder. You need to search for the old profile folder, inside it there will be a folder called bookmarkbakups containing a few files with names in the format bookmarks-yyyy-mm-dd.json.
For details of how to find the old profile folder see the [[profiles]] article. It should be inside this folder - /Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/, there will likely be a folder with a name similar to xxxxxxxx.default, that will be the profile folder.
You can import the bookmarks from the most recent of those files into your current version of Firefox by following the restore procedure in the [[Backing up and restoring bookmarks]], using the "Choose File" option.

  • How do I transfer my firefox bookmarks from an external harddrive to my new windows 7 computer?

I backed up my old pc on an external hard drive. Now, I have a new computer with Windows 7 and need to transfer/import my bookmarks from the external hard drive to my new computer. I found my bookmarks file on the external hard drive, I think, but don't know where to put the file on the new pc.

The user data is stored in the profile folder. You can copy more than just the bookmarks by copying the relevant files from your backup into your current [[profiles|profile folder]], for details see [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_backup Profile backup - MozillaZine Knowledge Base] or [[Recovering important data from an old profile]].
The bookmarks file is called places.sqlite, that file also contains browsing history. You can copy that file from the backup and place it in your current [[profiles|profile folder]] to restore the bookmarks and history.
An alternative approach if you just want the bookmarks, inside the backup of your profile folder there will be a folder called bookmarkbackups. Inside that folder are files with names in the format bookmarks-yyyy-mm-dd.json, those are backups of your bookmarks. You can import one of those files into your current version of Firefox by following the restore procedure in the [[backing up and restoring bookmarks]] article, using the "Choose file" option.

  • Restore bookmarks

I have an Acer with a file back-up program. I backed up my bookmarks to a file on my external drive and restored the computer to its original settings. The back-up did not pull the .json file rather it grabbed them and turned them into a folder called "Bookmarks Menu" with all of my bookmark files and links in them, just as it would look on Firefox. I moved the file to my desktop and draged the folder into the bookmarks menu. When I did that it created the following link: file:///C:/Users/Chris/Desktop/Bookmarks%20Menu/ in the bookmarks menu. I'm totally lost on what to do here to get the links back in and displaying normally.

To continue that thought, if they do look like IE Favorites, try dragging that Bookmarks Menu folder into your Windows Favorites folder and check in IE to see whether they transferred over.
If that looks good, you could use the export/import method to transfer them to Firefox. This will require some reorganization, unfortunately, but hopefully will get everything.
    * Export favorites in HTML format from IE: [http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/add-view-organize-favorites Add to, view, and organize favorites - Microsoft Windows Help] (expand the "Export and import favorites" section)

    Any luck?

  • Lost bookmarks on namoroka uninstall

Hi, I have Win7 64 bit running and had installed Namoroka 64 bit Firefox as well as the 32 bit firefox. I haven't run Namo much at all, and had all by bookmarks etc set in Firefox 3.xx. I recently uninstalled Namo as I wasn't using it, but on firing up Firefox 3.6.10 I got a 'firstrun' page and all by bookmarks were back to default. Any ideas on how to retrieve my bookmarks ?
    Cheers, Nick

When you uninstalled Namoroka did you choose the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data", if you did that would have deleted all of your Firefox user data.
If that is the case you may not be able to recover the bookmarks. You can try a file undelete utility, look for a files with in the format ''bookmarks-yyyy-mm-dd.json'' and try to recover the one with the most recent date. If successful you can import that file using the method in the [[Backing up and restoring bookmarks]] article.
The [[lost bookmarks]] article may be of help, but only if the original profile folder was not deleted.

  • How do I import bookmarks from a different PC installation?

I recently changed from a desktop to a laptop for my primary system when the desktop power supply failed. I was able to recover all desktop files by moving the HDD to an external USB enclosure.
Now I need to import the old extensive bookmark collection in Firefox 3.x to the laptop Firefox 3.x and combine it with the current bookmarks on the laptop.
How do I do this without destroying the bookmarks already on the laptop?

Before you do this, backup your laptops bookmarks as shown in the first part of the [[backing up and restoring bookmarks]] article. This step should not be necessary but I am just playing it safe so you can restore them if required.
The process below will save a copy of your bookmarks from the laptop, next it will replace the bookmarks on the laptop with those that were on the desktop. Finally it will import the laptops bookmarks, adding them to those from the desktop.
Export the bookmarks on the laptop again, this time to an HTML file, for details see [[exporting bookmarks to an HTML file]].
The next step is to restore the bookmarks from the HDD for the desktop. Follow the instructions in the [[backing up and restoring bookmarks]] article for restoring bookmarks, using the "Choose File" option. Now browse to the old profile folder on the HDD. For details of finding this folder see [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox]. Inside the profile folder there will be a folder called bookmarkbackups containing files with names in the format bookmarks-yyyy-mm-dd.json, select the one with the latest date. This will import those bookmarks, and in the process replace those that are on the laptop.
The final stage is re-importing the bookmarks from the HTML file that you exported above, for details see [[importing Bookmarks from an HTML File]]. This will add the bookmarks to those that were originally on the desktop.
If you are likely to have duplicate bookmarks, you can use the [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10897/ CheckPlaces] add-on to remove them if you wish.

  • Installed Anonymizer Nevercookie now I have lose my bookmarks.

I installed Anonymizer Nevercookie and I lost all my bookmarks and can not delete the add on. I cannot seem to locate the add on in program files or in Mozilla. Where do I look and what do I need to do to delete this add on? I am using XP and Mozilla 5.0.

That option permanently deletes all of your profile data, unless you make your own backups it is unlikely you will be able to recover the user data.
You can try a file recovery utility such as the free Recuva - http://www.piriform.com/recuva
With that see if you can recover a file with the name in the format bookmarks-yyyy-mm-dd.json, if you can recover one of those files you can try to restore your bookmarks as shown here - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Backing+up+and+restoring+bookmarks

  • (it's an answer to..) "My mac keeps returning to login window"

As above my imac mini kept going into a deep sleep when left unnatended for an hour. I had just upgraded to Mountain Lion AND was using new 'Canopus' hardware to convert my old video tapes AND had read "incompatible software" messages so i suspected this was where the root of the problem lay.
Various threads were siezed upon to remedy this, the latest was a 'safe reboot' and remove problem startup apps. There were no problem flags (circle with a line struck through) but I deleted all the startup apps anyway.
Still thee problem was there then I read a simple fix on a seperate thread...
I had obviously checked the energy saving shut-down sttings and still had the problem however this thread pointed to a timeout setting within SYS PREFERENCES/SECURITY & PRIVICY/GENERAL/ADVANCED which was greyed out until I entered the password.
There it was, completely buried and anything but obvious. "Logout after sixty minutes inactivity" BINGO!
This might be obvious to a million and one experts but I've been trying to sort this for over a week and now have to start transferring my videos all over agai so I hope it helps another simpleton like me

  • Formatted HD, but have backup of all the folders and files of Firefox. How can I restore everything, including plugins, bookmarks and saved settings?

I have formatted my computer's HD because of a problem with Windows 7, the thing is that Windows 7 didn't start, so I couldn't backup my Firefox settings, bookmarks, plugins, themes, personas and etc. the right way.
I also don't have a Firefox Sync account.
What I do have are all the folders and files of Firefox, because I just created a new partition and installed Windows 7 again, what I'm having trouble is finding a way (if there's any) to restore everything from my previous installation to the new one.
I have searched for days on both Google and on te Firefox forum with no success, the only questions I found are about restoring a profile, but what I'm trying to do is the same thing that the Firefox add-on " FEBE " does, which is restoring everything to the previous configuration.
    Here's alink to the add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/pt-br/firefox/addon/febe/
I have tried copying, pasting and overwritting from the " .default " folder to my new installation of Firefox (yes, Firefox was closed), but when I opened it again, nothing was restored.
I every single folder and file Firefox ever created on my computer, this includes the installation folder (at Program Files), the profile (.default at AppData) folder, the Mozilla folder (ProgramData) and the Mozilla Firefox folder (also at AppData).
I also had the FEBE add-on installed, but like stated before, unfortunately I couldn't start Windows 7, forcing me to create a new partition to install a new copy of the OS.
    Thanks in advance.
PS. Sorry if I made the text too long and/or if I mentioned the same things twice, just trying to be thorough.

    Hi Sdarts,
I apologize for the delay in replying to your question, and I am sorry to hear that you are having issues restoring your Firefox user data.
Please see the following article, which explains how to restore your Firefox user data using a previously backed up Profiles folder, which seems to apply to your situation:

  • PLEASE HELP ME! Mozilla Sync just lost all of my bookmarks after a format

Please help me oh god =(
After so long of using Weave then switching to Sync.. I think I finally lost my bookmarks (and everything else Sync saves) and I have --absolutely no clue how--
I had to format after a very mean trojan, and a few minutes ago i just installed firefox and sync -- I selected "Merge my bookmarks" and nothing happened, so frantically I tried all kinds of things -- after clicking on the "replace" option (and not actually doing it) it states I had 64 bookmarks although 0 passwords and 0 of something else, I was extremely happy to see that although I searched EVERYWHERE in my computer and they were no where to be found.. I restarted Firefox thinking they would suddenly pop up and they did not..
Now after restarting I did the "replace" button again and it was down to 14 bookmarks (which I believe is the amount you start with)
Is there ANYTHING I can do? Can the people at Mozilla Sync find my bookmarks? There was so much there =( All I did was merge and just... nothing happened.. So I panicked, was I supposed to restart he browser immediately after merging my bookmarks and things? Oh god =( Instead of saving all of my info on a disc when formating, I trusted Sync to save all of my information in bookmarks and things.. Now it is all lost, there are even some email addresses that I had passwords saved and now I have no way to recover them.
Is there ANYTHING I can do?????? Anything at all =/ This was NOT supposed to happen, all I did was Merge! Was I not supposed to Merge? I've used Merge a hundred times in the past! Please keep in mind that I formatted so there is no hope of using a backup.
    == This happened ==
    Just once or twice
    == after a format

Ok, this has happened to me twice now. I've been using weave since pre-1.0.
The first time I needed to wipe a cluttered firefox profile, then re-merged my sync and while it restored all of my bookmarks, it only caught half my passwords.
The second time, today, I needed to reinstall windows. I connected to firefox sync and selected merge, but the only bookmarks merged in were those I added recently, likely since the 1.4 update.
This is very troubling to me as there was never any warning that all of my data would not be secure. It was my fault for depending on it but now several years worth of bookmarks are just gone.
Am I using it wrong? When a new version comes out do I need to somehow re-sync everything? One would think that is taken care of automatically.
Please let us know if there is a way to recover our lost data.
And for the sake of other users please track this down and consider warning people they could lose their data.
    Thank you.

  • Has anyone experienced 'Parent' & 'Child' TOC (bookmark version) issues, when using an InDesign Book to create a fixed format ePub3?

    Hello,
I'm using the latest versions of AdobeCC and Indesign on the mac to generate fixed format ePub3 files.
I have an Indesign Book which is comprised of 9 documents (chapters). When I create a bookmark based Table Of Contents, I'm finding that I'm having trouble getting the 'parent' and 'child' hierarchy perfect. This is because some 'child' bookmarks need to be under the 'parent' of one document within my book, and yet I need to add the bookmark from a different document (or chapter).
In essence, I'm asking is there a way of having a 'child' bookmark in one document, nestled under a 'parent' on a different document within my InDesign book? All I seem to get are repeats of the 'parent' rather than it looking at all of the documents and synching them.
In the screenshot below (the larger circle), I have added sharks as a parent folder in one 'document/chapter', and then later on in the book (in a different document/chapter, another shark needs to be added to the list under the sharks parent, and yet it doesn't give me the option to add it as a Child to sharks. I created another sharks parent in this later document thinking I might be able to synch across all documents, but all it seems to do is create a duplicate.
    Any help appreciated!
    Thanks, Joe

Just thought that a much better way of phrasing what I initially asked would be: Is there is a way to synchronize bookmarks across all documents in a book?
    Thanks
    Joe
